THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU
A warm welcome back to the Rowley Mile for day one of our Season Finale at Newmarket.
I would like to start by thanking all those that have joined us throughout our 2022 flat season, from racegoers to participants and of course our generous sponsors.
Looking back, it has been a great season at both the Rowley Mile and the July Course. The QIPCO Guineas Festival saw James Doyle complete a historic double, becoming only the fifth jockey to win both the QIPCO 2000 Guineas and QIPCO 1000 Guineas in the same year. His win on Coroebus started a trend that continued throughout the season with domination from Charlie Appleby and Godolphin running across both the Rowley Mile and the July Course.
The July Course saw the return of our brilliant Newmarket Nights series, where we welcomed thousands of racegoers across seven Fridays, culminating in the sold out Pete Tong’s Ibiza Classics in August
The Möet & Chandon July Festival saw some fantastic racing action including jockey Rob Hornby’s first Group One double in the Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes and the Darley July Cup.
Since we reverted back to the Rowley Mile for Gold Season, we have seen more excellent victories, none more so than Chaldean in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes. He has laid himself out as a leading contender when we return to the Rowley Mile for the 2023 QIPCO Guineas Festival
While you enjoy the end of this year’s season you might want to explore our 2023 annual badge packages which are now on sale, offering access to all fixtures and events at both the Rowley Mile and the July Course as well as exclusive perks
Find out more online at www.thejockeyclub.co.uk/newmarket or at our information point in the Grandstand
I wish all our guests a very enjoyable afternoon and the very best of luck to all the horses and their connections.
Best wishes,
DON’T FORGET OUR NEXT MEETING SATURDAY 29TH OCTOBER THE FINAL RACEDAY OF THE SEASON

The proceeds of the Glenn Roeder Raceday were formally presented to The Brain Tumour Charity at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile Racecourse on Wednesday 19 October.
Sally Williams, the charity’s Philanthropy Manager, received a cheque for more than £160,000 from the Roeder family following the fundraising event staged at the July Course this summer in honour of the former footballer and manager, Glenn Roeder, who lost his battle with the disease in February 2021 at the age of 65. Fundraising activities at the Glenn Roeder Raceday held on Saturday, 23 July extended beyond the VIP marquee where 360 guests took part in a live auction, prize draws and competitions to an international online auction supported by leading sports personalities and organisations, bucket collections at venues around the UK and a JustGiving page in the name of Glenn Roeder.
Responding on behalf of The Brain Tumour Charity Sally Williams said, “Everyone at The Brain Tumour Charity has been completely blown away by the incredible support from The Glenn Roeder Race Day and the quite remarkable amount raised from such a fantastic event. I was fortunate to attend the race day in July and could feel the genuine love and respect for Glenn, Holly and the whole family which was also clearly demonstrated

by the huge amount raised!
“Brain tumours remain the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40 and reduce average life expectancy by 27 years the highest of any cancer. The work that The Brain Tumour Charity does to double survival rates and halve the harm that brain tumours have on quality of life simply would not happen without the fantastic support from people like Holly and everyone who supported through The Glenn Roeder Race Day. A very, very big thank you to Holly and all those involved in putting the day together and of course to everyone who donated.”
The Brain Tumour Charity is the world’s largest dedicated funder of pioneering research into brain tumours. The Charity also raises awareness of the signs and symptoms of the disease to reduce diagnosis times and provides vital support and information to those with a brain tumour diagnosis now.
Event organiser Holly Roeder said, “It’s such a thrill to be able to support the work of The Brain Tumour Charity with this donation and we are all incredibly grateful to everyone who helped with the fundraising and gave Dad’s family and friends a wonderful day to remember.”

HEATH: A HISTORY
Newmarket and horses have been connected since Queen Boadicea founded a Royal stud at Exning. More than 1,000 years later, Sir Richard d’Argentine developed a “New Market” in this location.
17th Century
Newmarket became a favourite destination of King James I, who moved the Royal court there for a time and raced horses on the Heath. His grandson, Charles II, built the first recorded stand.
19th Century
Lord George Bentinck, owner of a large expanse of heathland and a Jockey Club member turned acres of scrubland over to grass, purchased adjacent land and established the gallops which still exist today.
World Wars I and II
The Rowley Mile stands and heath were occupied by the military The heath was converted into an airfield for training officers and no flying was permitted on the racedays
1980s
The airfield was decommissioned
Newmarket Heath surveyed by I.Champan in 1787 shows the state of the racecourses close to the time of the Jockey Club’s founding.Exning and Newmarket were notably quite established.
1886 Map shows Hamilton Road and the area north of the heath including Southfield Farm and Seven Springs are relatively similar today.
Today Today the heath forms the primary training grounds to the largest cluster of racehorses on the planet between two and three thousand in number at any one time It’s combination of training facilities and their interaction with the town, coupled with its unique heritage, are a vital contributor to Newmarket’s position as the preeminent racing and breeding centre for thoroughbreds and spiritual home of horseracing globally
World War II brought formal airfield facilities which occupied the heath for just under 40 years.
T: 0844 579 3010 W: newmarketracecourses.co.uk NEWMARKET
ROWLEY MILE & JULY COURSE
17th Century
The most significant early development within racing in Newmarket came in 1665, when King Charles II, added a third “Round Course” to the two already existing courses in Newmarket, the Beacon Course (today the Rowley Mile) and the Cambridgeshire Course All three courses were to be used for a new race which was first run in 1666, the Newmarket Town Plate It was stated that the race should be run “forever”, and it continues to be run today. Due to the nature of racing at the time agile viewing was required, with spectators largely looking on from horseback or carriages.
19th Century
18th Century
The Jockey Club’s presence in Newmarket in the 1750s had a significant impact on Newmarket heath’s physical environment, increasing racing provisions and changing it from the playground of the nobility it had been up to that point. By 1756 the Round Course built its first stand, simple in nature with stables below and viewing above At The Rowley Mile smaller racing facilities, a weighing house and stables were added and in 1774 the land used for racing was extended and formalised to become the Ancaster Mile
Over the late 18th and 19th Century, races were changing shorter distances and more fixed finishing posts meant the nature of spectating was equally shifting. The 1850s brought significant reorganisation on the heath associated with the growing focus on the Rowley Mile including its first stand. This was replaced by the Astley Stand in 1875 when a stand exclusively for trainers and jockeys was also built, located on the site of the current Head-on Stand.
20th Century
1911 saw further development with a new weighing room at Rowley Mile (now known as the Hong Kong Suite) designed by Walter Brierley. New and more modest stands for the public and Jockey Club members were also built. As crowds grew at the July Course’s summer meetings, concern over extending facilities and ruining the ‘picnic atmosphere’ were debated. In the 1930s, five main buildings were constructed The Weighing Room, Head-on Stand, and 3 similar structures for Members, Tattersalls, and Silver Ring patrons. These still form the primary trackside viewing facilities today.
Post-War Decades
Immediately following the second world war, the July Course saw crowds grow for its summer Derby Day to levels of attendance not seen today. However it was not to last and in 1954 declining attendance figures brought proposals for a round course in front of the Rowley Mile stands, with the suggestion it would make it easier for spectators to view.
In 1958 a round course was laid out and it was used until 1973

Our involvement in community and charitable activities in Newmarket has the single aim of making a positive impact to Newmarket as a whole Whether it’s a collaborative role in some of the large number of ongoing community projects or using our own resources and expertise, we enjoy playing our part.
Our community work has taken many different forms over the years, and continues to evolve to match the ever changing needs of Newmarket and its residents. Examples include support of the ongoing education programmes in conjunction with Godolphin at local primary schools and the Newmarket Academy, as well as being involved in improvements to the Memorial Gardens. More recently, during the pandemic organisations from right across Newmarket came together to support the town and its residents. This included setting up helplines, delivering food parcels and organising a Christmas parade
The relationships and positive momentum created during the last few years has continued, with recent projects including:
Improving the Yellow Brick Road
Clearing the Community Orchard
Partnering with Newmarket Open Door
Delivering ongoing talks on road safety in local schools
Supporting the grassroots teams of Newmarket FC
We have plenty more projects in the pipeline and for as long as The Jockey Club is in Newmarket, we will remain committed to contributing positively to the community
Our community work also extends to longer term initiatives to help the town, such as being involved in an exciting new initiative called The Newmarket Charitable Foundation.

It is only in relatively recent history that racing has been staged on an organised basis.
The first formal match race famously took place on Newmarket Heath in 1622, and over the following century the practice grew rapidly in popularity
In 1740 the government of Sir Robert Walpole became concerned at the popularity of racing and the gambling that took place on it.
New laws were introduced to try to regulate the activity and make it less popular, but they proved ineffective. Fearing further government intervention, racing enthusiasts came together in the coffee houses of London and in 1750 they created racing’s own regulatory body: The Jockey Club Despite its name, The Jockey Club has never been a club for jockeys. In the 18th century it was traditional for professionals and tradespeople to be described by their occupations, with a first name of “Mr Jockie” for those in racing.
Although early meetings were based in London, Newmarket was already the home of horseracing and it was just two years before The Jockey Club laid down permanent roots there.
Despite its name, The Jockey Club has never been a club for jockeys
In 1752 The Jockey Club leased a plot of land in Newmarket and built a coffee house, and in the 19th century the land was acquired permanently The original building still exists today and has been restored and maintained as part of The Jockey Club Rooms, which were re-built and expanded in the 20th century
An integral part of Newmarket High Street, the Rooms embody the link between the town of Newmarket and The Jockey Club, which remains as strong as ever to this day. It is home to one of the finest collections of equestrian art to be found anywhere in the world, with tours available to the public through Discover Newmarket.

INSPIRATIONAL ROLE IN NEWMARKET’S BEACON PROJECT
Today’s 3.15 race, ‘The Newmarket Beacon Thanks Mark Kirby Handicap Stakes’ celebrates an inspirational local secondary school teacher
Newmarket Academy’s former Assistant Principal Mark Kirby was integral to the growth and sustainability of the Newmarket Academy Godolphin Beacon Project that is now in its seventh year Mark left the school in the summer to start the next chapter of his career but his commitment and encouragement of the students of Newmarket Academy to immerse themselves in a range of activities was key to the success of the Beacon, which is delivered by Racing to School and kindly sponsored and actively supported by Godolphin.
“Mark was always so passionate about the Project and keen to strengthen its close links with so many parts of the Newmarket racing industry,” said Ollie McPhail from Racing to School.
“He was a great colleague with an infectious, positive attitude towards racing and the sport’s potential to inspire the students.”
Mark’s legacy lives on through the thriving Beacon and its support of so many young people in Newmarket who may become the next generation of the horseracing industry’s workforce and racegoers.
Mark is here today with his family to celebrate his contribution to the learning and development of Newmarket’s young people Thank you to Newmarket Racecourses for their recognition of Mark’s role today, and for their support of the Project throughout the year
The Newmarket Academy Godolphin Beacon Project is a programme of around 30 distinct activities designed to support and challenge all year groups of the Academy across the academic year.
Racing to School is a registered charity (1040590) that relies solely on voluntary giving to fund its work. This year, with the support of the horseracing industry, the charity will support 16,000 young people across Great Britain through interactive outdoor educational activities.

Emergency Procedures
Newmarket Racecourses has put in place a number of security and safety measures to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency. As part of our safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse.
In the event of a situation which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions calmly and quickly. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards
The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area Should it be necessary to evacuate the course, the most likely scenario is that you will be ushered onto the track itself via the emergency gates. From there you will be held in an area of safety and receive further instructions as appropriate It may give you some peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, please remember in the event of an emergency: TAKE YOUR BELONGINGS WITH YOU. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE STEWARDS, PROCEED QUICKLY AND CALMLY TO THE SAFE AREA Racegoers are reminded to keep all their belongings with them at all times, and not to leave any packages unattended Any such packages may be confiscated by the Racecourse Management.
IMPORTANT NOTICES
Health And Safety Notice
The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst you are at Newmarket Racecourses. The emergency exits from the bars onto the grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would request that you do not stop whilst in this area. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse We would also like to remind racegoers that the first aid room is located adjacent to the main Premier Enclosure Entrance (Rowley Mile) or Premier Entrance 2 (July Course).
Racehorse & Jockey Welfare
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine BHA Officials are here to ensure that the racecourse delivers those standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs two veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse
In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey
If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
Photography
Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the racecourse enclosures. Photography is not permitted in any other area without the permission of the Head of Racing. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication. Racegoers are reminded that flash photography is not permitted as the flash can alarm horses and may endanger horses, jockeys and public.
