A parade of retired racehorses takes place in the paddock from 1pm. The parade, kindly sponsored by Juddmonte, showcases six of the different disciplines that thoroughbreds are retrained for and which Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) supports through the staging of competitions and classes.
For over 20 years Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) has promoted the versatility of the thoroughbred and through its work, RoR has developed up an unprecedented demand for former racehorses in the wider equestrian market.
RoR annually stages over 40 separate competition series across 15 different disciplines exclusively for former racehorses, catering for all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite. The disciplines include dressage, endurance, eventing, polo, show jumping and showing. There are over 10,000 horses currently registered with RoR enjoying active and fulfilling careers after racing.
As well as developing an increased demand for former racehorses, RoR continues to provide a welfare safety net that ensures any racehorse in need of charitable support is quickly identified and suitably cared for.
For more information visit: www.ror.org.uk
Don’t miss the Parade of former racehorses at 13:00pm - 13:15pm this afternoon in the parade ring! Kindly supported by Juddmonte

Dressage is the most popular discipline for former racehorses and there is an extensive RoR programme that caters for every level, from grass roots to elite. More thoroughbreds now do dressage each year than run in steeple chases under rules. Representing dressage in the parade is Saint Gregoire. Originally trained and raced in France, where we won six times, he came to Louise Robson via the Godolphin Rehoming Programme Louise says he has a natural talent for ‘dressage flare’ and ‘dance’ and enjoys doing dressage to music classes the most
He recently finished third at The Jockey Club RoR National Championships at Aintree in the Novice class and Louise says: “Saint Gregoire shows real potential for the higher levels of dressage, and I am really excited to see how far up the levels he will go He is qualified for the British Dressage associate championships and Winter Regionals 2023 at Elementary level and will soon step up-to Medium level dressage.”
Formerly trained by Paul Nicholls
Breeder: Michel Parreau-Delhote
Endurance riding is competitive long-distance riding, often across stunning countryside, and several former racehorses find their niche doing it. Distances vary from the entry level of 16km right through to elite level where horses will do a 160km in a day
Art Mauresque enjoyed a successful NH career, winning nine races under rules, before being retired in December 2020, after which Hayley Gilmore took him on. Initially, Hayley and Art Mauresque did a bit of everything, including show jumping and cross-country, but it soon became apparent that endurance is what he loved, so they started on their endurance adventure.
He qualified for the National Novice Championships in Lincolnshire and for the team RoR endurance championships in Wales. Hayley says: “Art Mauresque has really taken to endurance, and he enjoys going to new places Next year our plan is to increase our distance and move up to open and maybe advanced, I am very much looking forward to that with this special horse.”

Comprising three different disciplines, dressage, show jumping and cross-country, eventing is a demanding discipline, but one at which many former racehorses thrive, including at Olympic level.
Mount Conero was family owned and trained for a somewhat undistinguished point-to-point career Retired aged nine, owner Penny Stearn decided to give her daughter Hetty the opportunity to see what Mount Conero could achieve in an alternative career
Mount Conero quickly showed an aptitude for eventing and took to cross-country like a duck to water. He has competed at BE90 and 100 and has been placed nearly every time, with a highlight being third in the RoR Eventing Championships at Tweseldown. To date he has competed at 19 BE events and numerous unaffiliated events and has never had a fault cross-country. Hetty says, “Mount Conero really is a horse of a lifetime and he holds a special place in all our hearts.”
Formerly trained by Jim Goldie Breeder: Miss Mary Davison
Polo has long been a second career option for former racehorses but the popularity of thoroughbreds in polo has increased in recent years. The best polo prospects tend to be smaller ex-flat horses and they are often mares
In six starts, Final Spring only once managed to finish in front of another horse, but that has not stopped her being a success in her second career She began her journey into polo in 2018 and moved to current rider Chris Milton the following year
Now one of Chris’s professional playing string, Final Spring is a powerful horse, not afraid to take contact in ride-offs, while always staying light and nibble on her feet through stops and turns Chris says: “Final Spring has a wonderful nature, always keeping a level head on the field, and is a firm favourite on the yard. Next season Final Spring will continue her polo career with a view to playing better and better polo as her experience continues to grow.”
Requiring a stride pattern the opposite of that which a horse uses when racing, show jumping is not the easiest discipline for former racehorses to adapt to However, many have turned their ‘hoof’ to it successfully
Gaul Wood retired from racing in 2013 having won three races on the flat. He arrived at Debbie Heise’s in spring 2014 and the pair have since formed a fantastic partnership They finished second in their first affiliated British Show-jumping class in July 2014 and have had consistent results ever since, with the highlight coming this summer when they won the 1m Open at the Royal International at Hickstead. They went on to win the RoR Bronze League at the BS National Championships in August. Debbie says: “Gaul Wood is everyone’s favourite, full of personality and is a gentle kind soul. His previous owners are still in contact and love to watch his progress. He is our horse of a lifetime and we are privileged to have him.”
After dressage, showing is the most popular second career activity for retired racehorses with over 5,000 registered on the RoR database as competitors in showing events. With the support of Tattersalls, RoR stages 170 showing classes exclusively for thoroughbreds annually nationwide from Aberdeenshire to Cornwall.
A former top-class sprinter and the winner of an amazing 14 of his 33 races, including the 2016 July Cup, Limato has been in the care of renowned showing producer Katie Jerram-Hunnable since he retired from racing in autumn 2020 Having settled into his new career, Limato is enjoying life in the show ring.
This year Katie and Limato qualified for the Tattersalls RoR Show Series Final at Hickstead, finished runner-up at the Royal Windsor Horse Show and won a class at The Jockey Club RoR National Championships at Aintree in August. His supportive owner Paul Jacobs continues to monitor and enjoy his progress.

Newmarket and horses have been connected since Queen Boadicea founded a Royal stud at Exning. More than 1,000 years later, Sir Richard d’Argentine developed a “New Market” in this location.
Newmarket became a favourite destination of King James I, who moved the Royal court there for a time and raced horses on the Heath. His grandson, Charles II, built the first recorded stand.
Lord George Bentinck, owner of a large expanse of heathland and a Jockey Club member turned acres of scrubland over to grass, purchased adjacent land and established the gallops which still exist today.
The Rowley Mile stands and heath were occupied by the military The heath was converted into an airfield for training officers and no flying was permitted on the racedays
The airfield was decommissioned
Newmarket Heath surveyed by I.Champan in 1787 shows the state of the racecourses close to the time of the Jockey Club’s founding.Exning and Newmarket were notably quite established.
1886 Map shows Hamilton Road and the area north of the heath including Southfield Farm and Seven Springs are relatively similar today.
Today Today the heath forms the primary training grounds to the largest cluster of racehorses on the planet between two and three thousand in number at any one time
It’s combination of training facilities and their interaction with the town, coupled with its unique heritage, are a vital contributor to Newmarket’s position as the preeminent racing and breeding centre for thoroughbreds and spiritual home of horseracing globally
World War II brought formal airfield facilities which occupied the heath for just under 40 years.
A number of courses have been in use in Newmarket over the centuries. The evolution of Rowley Mile and the July Course reflects how the sport has changed to be enjoyed by all, and not just the privileged few.
The most significant early development within racing in Newmarket came in 1665, when King Charles II, added a third “Round Course” to the two already existing courses in Newmarket, the Beacon Course (today the Rowley Mile) and the Cambridgeshire Course All three courses were to be used for a new race which was first run in 1666, the Newmarket Town Plate It was stated that the race should be run “forever”, and it continues to be run today. Due to the nature of racing at the time agile viewing was required, with spectators largely looking on from horseback or carriages.
The Jockey Club’s presence in Newmarket in the 1750s had a significant impact on Newmarket heath’s physical environment, increasing racing provisions and changing it from the playground of the nobility it had been up to that point. By 1756 the Round Course built its first stand, simple in nature with stables below and viewing above At The Rowley Mile smaller racing facilities, a weighing house and stables were added and in 1774 the land used for racing was extended and formalised to become the Ancaster Mile
Over the late 18th and 19th Century, races were changing shorter distances and more fixed finishing posts meant the nature of spectating was equally shifting. The 1850s brought significant reorganisation on the heath associated with the growing focus on the Rowley Mile including its first stand. This was replaced by the Astley Stand in 1875 when a stand exclusively for trainers and jockeys was also built, located on the site of the current Head-on Stand.
1911 saw further development with a new weighing room at Rowley Mile (now known as the Hong Kong Suite) designed by Walter Brierley. New and more modest stands for the public and Jockey Club members were also built. As crowds grew at the July Course’s summer meetings, concern over extending facilities and ruining the ‘picnic atmosphere’ were debated. In the 1930s, five main buildings were constructed The Weighing Room, Head-on Stand, and 3 similar structures for Members, Tattersalls, and Silver Ring patrons. These still form the primary trackside viewing facilities today.
Immediately following the second world war, the July Course saw crowds grow for its summer Derby Day to levels of attendance not seen today. However it was not to last and in 1954 declining attendance figures brought proposals for a round course in front of the Rowley Mile stands, with the suggestion it would make it easier for spectators to view.
In 1958 a round course was laid out and it was used until 1973
The Round Course at Rowley Mile (1958-1973)
The most recent stage in the Rowley Mile’s evolution is the Millennium Stand, which was unveiled by the Queen on 6 May 2000 The Rowley Mile and July Course can welcome up to 20,000 people
Today is Juddmonte Day, the third and concluding day of the Cambridgeshire Meeting and widely regarded as one of the most exciting days in the Flat racing calendar
A jewel in the crown of The Newmarket Gold Season, there are two Group One races on offer for juveniles as well as the first leg of the traditional ‘Autumn Double’.
Juddmonte Day has developed a well-deserved reputation for highlighting stars of the future and with the first two British top level juvenile races of the year on this card it is easy to see why. The first of them, the Group One Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes, is run over six furlongs for two year old fillies.
Named after one of the most successful thoroughbred Stud Farms in Europe and generously sponsored by the late Prince Khalid Abdullah’s Juddmonte Farms for the sixth successive year, the race has produced numerous top class horses as well as candidates for the following year’s QIPCO 1000 Guineas. Last year’s winner Tenebrism followed up with further Group 1 success in Deauville earlier this year, with the last horse to go on to land the 1000 Guineas double was Special Duty for French trainer Criquette Head-Maarek in 2009/2010.
Its equivalent race for male horses, the Group One Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes for two year old colts over six furlongs, quickly follows Like the Cheveley Park, the race is worth noting in terms of the market for the QIPCO 2000 Guineas the following May, as well as producing a long line of high class performers. Last year’s winner Perfect Power went on to win the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot in June Juddmonte is extending its generous backing to this contest for the eighth time in 2022.
Complementing those two races is the Group Two Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes for two year olds over a mile, which boasts an impressive recent roll of honour which includes future Group One winners Elm Park in 2014, Roaring Lion in 2017 and the incomparable Frankel in 2010.
Away from the Group action is the bet365 Cambridgeshire, a Heritage Handicap which serves as the first leg of the traditional ‘Autumn Double’ which is completed by the Together For Racing International Cesarewitch Heritage on Dubai Future Champions Day (Saturday 8th October in 2022).
There few spectacles in sport quite like the sight of 30 runners thundering down the Rowley Mile and this nine furlong contest is a favourite of jockeys, trainers and racegoers alike. Recent winners include future Group performers Wissahickon in 2018 and Lord North in 2019.
This is truly a world-class day of racing action staged on the historic Rowley Mile and a fitting finale to three fantastic days of horseracing.
Our involvement in community and charitable activities in Newmarket has the single aim of making a positive impact to Newmarket as a whole Whether it’s a collaborative role in some of the large number of ongoing community projects or using our own resources and expertise, we enjoy playing our part.
Our community work has taken many different forms over the years, and continues to evolve to match the ever changing needs of Newmarket and its residents. Examples include support of the ongoing education programmes in conjunction with Godolphin at local primary schools and the Newmarket Academy, as well as being involved in improvements to the Memorial Gardens. More recently, during the pandemic organisations from right across Newmarket came together to support the town and its residents. This included setting up helplines, delivering food parcels and organising a Christmas parade
The relationships and positive momentum created during the last few years has continued, with recent projects including:
Improving the Yellow Brick Road
Clearing the Community Orchard
Partnering with Newmarket Open Door
Delivering ongoing talks on road safety in local schools
Supporting the grassroots teams of Newmarket FC
We have plenty more projects in the pipeline and for as long as The Jockey Club is in Newmarket, we will remain committed to contributing positively to the community
Our community work also extends to longer term initiatives to help the town, such as being involved in an exciting new initiative called The Newmarket Charitable Foundation.

It is only in relatively recent history that racing has been staged on an organised basis.
The first formal match race famously took place on Newmarket Heath in 1622, and over the following century the practice grew rapidly in popularity
In 1740 the government of Sir Robert Walpole became concerned at the popularity of racing and the gambling that took place on it.
New laws were introduced to try to regulate the activity and make it less popular, but they proved ineffective. Fearing further government intervention, racing enthusiasts came together in the coffee houses of London and in 1750 they created racing’s own regulatory body: The Jockey Club Despite its name, The Jockey Club has never been a club for jockeys. In the 18th century it was traditional for professionals and tradespeople to be described by their occupations, with a first name of “Mr Jockie” for those in racing.
Although early meetings were based in London, Newmarket was already the home of horseracing and it was just two years before The Jockey Club laid down permanent roots there.
In 1752 The Jockey Club leased a plot of land in Newmarket and built a coffee house, and in the 19th century the land was acquired permanently The original building still exists today and has been restored and maintained as part of The Jockey Club Rooms, which were re-built and expanded in the 20th century
An integral part of Newmarket High Street, the Rooms embody the link between the town of Newmarket and The Jockey Club, which remains as strong as ever to this day. It is home to one of the finest collections of equestrian art to be found anywhere in the world, with tours available to the public through Discover Newmarket.
Royal Patronage gave Mark Johnston his first win in this race since 2012 when Steeler clinched victory
The two-year-old colt took a keen hold and was pushed along when two furlongs out.
Jockey Jason Hart then made the switch left inside the final two furlongs and Royal Patronage found the answer in the latter stages, staying on well to fend off the danger from market joint-favourite Coroebus to win by a neck.
That made it back-to-back wins for Royal Patronage, having won at York a month earlier.

Alan came to Newmarket in 1975 starting his career as a French teacher at Newmarket Upper School (now Academy) where he taught several jockeys, including Dale Gibson and Luke Morris.
During his 30 years teaching, he also became heavily involved with the Newmarket Twinning Association where racing would play a part as he championed the racecourses of Maisons-Laffitte and Newmarket.
A keen cricketer and groundsman, he was still playing this season with Chippenham CC and enjoyed the racing connection due to the annual Racing XI match being played at the ground.
In recent years he was at his happiest as an Annual Badge holder, socialising with family and friends on either the July Course or Rowley Mile.
As much as he loved having a bet at the course, Alan spent as much time ensuring his granddaughters had seen the horses and more importantly, got an ice cream or two! came to Ne et 19 starting his career as a April 1948 2nd August 2022
There was a surprise in this race in 2021 with Tenebrism taking the honours under a smart ride from Ryan Moore.
The market suggested Sacred Bridge would prove too much for the rest of the field but it certainly didn’t play out that way
Aidan O’Brien has enjoyed plenty of success in this race, with Tenebrism being his fourth win in the last six years.
The two-year-old filly didn’t get off to a particularly smooth start but soon recovered.
Despite having plenty left to do at the two furlong marker, she stayed on well and quickened to take the lead inside the closing stages.

Laurie Williamson was the lad who looked after Brigadier Gerard during his racing career and brought him to Newmarket Races to win the Middle Park Stakes, the Two Thousand Guineas and two Champion Stakes in the period between 1970 and 1972. is the 50th anniversary, of Brigadier’s final race, in the Champion Stakes, then run at Newmarket, in 1972
Laurie has written a book entitled Brigadier Gerard and Me to celebrate his 50th anniversary and will be in the museum shop today.
Sir Michael Stoute admitted he was a “relieved” man after watching the talented Nostrum (7-4) enhance his prospects for next year’s QIPCO 2000 Guineas when maintaining his unbeaten record with a stylish success in the Tattersalls Stakes at Newmarket on Thursday 22nd September.
After making a triumphant debut at Sandown Park 63 days ago, the powerfully-built Kingman colt defied his relative experience to make it two from two and give his Classic winning trainer a fourth success in the Group Three prize.
Although only four runners took to post it looked a quality renewal of the seven-furlong event with Holloway Boy, winner of this year’s Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot and Victory Dance, winner of the Denford Stakes at Newbury in opposition.
Racing as two pairs for much of the race Nostrum moved on into a clear advantage past outsider of the quartet Abravaggio inside the final two furlongs, where he was swiftly joined by the strong travelling Holloway Boy. However, Nostrum was not for passing under Ryan Moore with the pair drawing away on the climb to the line to score by a length and a quarter.
Following the race Nostrum was trimmed from 20-1 into 4-1 for next month’s Darley Dewhurst Stakes over course and distance by Paddy Power and Betfair while both firms clipped him from 14-1 into 8-1 for the 2023 QIPCO 2000 Guineas Stoute said: “It was very pleasing I thought it was a very warm race but he did it very nicely first time and was entitled to come and run in a race like that I was relieved and was pleased with the performance.
“We expected a very big run but for a horse racing for the first time like he was it is always difficult to fathom It is so far so good and you could only be pleased “I don’t know if we will see him again this season We will take him home and chill him out and relax him and put him back in fast work
“It is a difficult time of year especially for two year olds when the weather turns so we don’t know but I would like to give him one more run.”
As for the runner up his trainer Karl Burke hinted that an outing at Group One company in the Vertem Futurity Trophy at Doncaster on October 22nd could be on the cards.
Burke said: "We're delighted with that as he missed 8-10 days with a dirty scope when he missed that Champagne Stakes
“Danny Tudhope said he would be suited by a mile so we could look at the Vertem Futurity Trophy or beyond that the Breeders' Cup."
By Graham ClarkAn outsider in the field stole the show in this race last year, with Bedouin’s Story defeating joint-favourite Anmaat by three-quarters of a length.
The Saeed bin Suroor-trained six-year-old was slowly away and held up towards the rear by Jamie Spencer
The gelding was in touch with the leaders and ridden over a furlong out before staying on strongly to gain the lead and dismiss any potential danger from the remainder of the field.
Anmaat travelled well and was in front over a furlong out but just couldn’t find any extra to stop the Godolphin runner.

William Haggas has yet to land this prestigious handicap but MUJTABA is taken to put that right.
Though admittedly short in the betting for one who has yet to prove himself in the hustle and bustle of a big-field scenario such as this, he is unexposed and was impressive when returning from a break at Doncaster recently Stablemate Protagonist merits respect, but recent trends suggest a low draw is not ideal and bigger threats may be posed by Electrical Storm, Savvy Victory and Jimi Hendrix.

Newmarket Racecourses has put in place a number of security and safety measures to ensure your safety, comfort and enjoyment. However an incident may occur which is beyond our control and it is important that you are aware of how we intend to look after you in the event of an emergency. As part of our safety management, we have employed professionally trained and experienced stewards and you will see them at various points throughout the racecourse.
In the event of a situation which requires partial or full evacuation of the stands or racecourse, announcements will be broadcast and stewards will undertake the responsibility of ushering you to a place of safety; it is essential that you follow their instructions calmly and quickly. Please take your belongings with you and proceed out of the area quickly and calmly with the guidance of the stewards
The evacuation procedures have been carefully planned to lead you to a safe area Should it be necessary to evacuate the course, the most likely scenario is that you will be ushered onto the track itself via the emergency gates. From there you will be held in an area of safety and receive further instructions as appropriate It may give you some peace of mind if you pre plan and agree a meeting place, just in case you become separated from your party The above is precautionary only and we trust that the procedures will never be required. However, please remember in the event of an emergency: TAKE YOUR BELONGINGS WITH YOU. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE STEWARDS, PROCEED QUICKLY AND CALMLY TO THE SAFE AREA Racegoers are reminded to keep all their belongings with them at all times, and not to leave any packages unattended Any such packages may be confiscated by the Racecourse Management. NOTICES
The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst you are at Newmarket Racecourses. The emergency exits from the bars onto the grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would request that you do not stop whilst in this area. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse We would also like to remind racegoers that the first aid room is located adjacent to the main Premier Enclosure Entrance (Rowley Mile) or Premier Entrance 2 (July Course).
The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing. All racehorses competing in Britain are stabled at the premises of trainers who are licensed by The British Horseracing Authority The standards demanded by The BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation. The British Horseracing Authority similarly licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine BHA Officials are here to ensure that the racecourse delivers those standards. In addition Newmarket Racecourses employs two veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse
In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team. Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey
If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment. If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the nearest equine hospital or Accident & Emergency hospital.
Racegoers may take photographs for private purposes in the racecourse enclosures. Photography is not permitted in any other area without the permission of the Head of Racing. Under no circumstances may photographs taken on the racecourse be used for publication. Racegoers are reminded that flash photography is not permitted as the flash can alarm horses and may endanger horses, jockeys and public.
The official photographer is John Hoy. To see any of his images please visit www.hoycubedphotography.com.
