We are thrilled to be celebrating our first year of Coral sponsoring this prestigious race meeting, with the Coral Gold Cup the centre-piece, and would like to welcome you all to Newbury Racecourse.
Coral is the longest-standing and most committed sponsor in British racing, sponsoring races across both Flat and Jump racing that date back to the 1970s, and we are delighted to be bringing the Coral Gold Cup meeting on board.
Coral is passionate about horse racing, and we have recently launched a new and exciting racing club, The Coral Racing Club, that we will be promoting throughout the two days. The Club is free to join and will give members the chance to experience what it’s like to own racehorses, as well as a range of other benefits.
Please also visit our Coral Virtual Race Experience by the side of the parade ring, and experience what it’s like to ride in a race using a VR Headset. Jockeys that have watched it, say it’s the closest you will ever get to actually riding in a race.
Finally, thank you for coming, and have a great time and enjoy yourself.
Simon ClareA very warm welcome to all our racegoers to the Coral Gold Cup Meeting, the first running of our most important jumps fixture under the Coral banner.
This meeting is always seen as the start of the festive season here at Newbury, none more so than this year with the launch of the Great Christmas Carnival to accompany two days of top-class racing. We would encourage all our racegoers to go and explore this unique event in the centre of the course which is open for all racegoers to visit during this race meeting. You can cross the course through the Grandstand enclosure to access the site all day. The Great Christmas Carnival runs until Monday 2 January 2023 and during this period we host four racedays where all racegoers can access to the Carnival site free of charge as part of their raceday ticket. This is a new event for all of us and given its scale and location we have invested in additional track side big screens and new camera positions to make sure none of the racing action will be missed. In these challenging times, racecourses such as ours have to be as commercial as possible and this event can make a positive contribution to our business to help us sustain the very best racing product and we also offer all our raceday visitors great additional entertainment. The racing looks as competitive as ever across both days with the much-loved £250,000 Coral Gold Cup taking centre stage and our thanks go to Coral for their generous sponsorship of the two-day card, along with the Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust. We are also delighted to host the traditional Retraining of Racehorses parade between the second and third race in the parade ring and the Injured Jockeys Fund will be in their usual position outside the Weighing Room offering all the essential Christmas gifts.
Wishing you a very profitable and enjoyable time with us and thank you for your ongoing support of Newbury Racecourse.

There are plenty of ways to bet at Newbury you can either bet with the bookmakers in the ‘ring’ in front of the Grandstand and the Crafty Filly, at one of the many Totepool kiosks or in one of our Betfred Betting Shops, located on the ground floor of the Dubai Duty Free Grandstand and the Berkshire Stand. Here’s a step-by-step guide of what to do:
1. Select your horse and note its name and racecard number.
2. Choose your bet ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are the two most common types:
• ‘To win’ is for your horse to come first.
• ‘Each-way’ is when you place two bets in one: one for your horse to come first, the other for it to be placed. Therefore £2 each-way = £4 total bet.
• What qualifies as a ‘place’ depends on the number of runners: between two and four runners first place only; between five and seven runners first and second place; eight runners and over first three places; 16 runners and over (handicaps only) first four places.
• The place part of the bet will be paid out at a fraction of the odds, usually a quarter or a fifth this varies depending on the bookmaker, so check if you are unsure!
3. Decide the amount, also known as the stake that you are comfortable to bet.
4. Choose your outlet and place your bet e.g. “£2 win on number three” or “£2 each-way on number six”.
5. If your horse has won, wait to hear “weighed in” over the public address system and then go and collect any winnings!
6. Got so swept up you forgot to collect your cash? There are details of how to collect winning slips after the raceday on our terms and conditions page near the back of the racecard. Pleasegambleresponsibly.

We all know that Your Horse is the only horse that matters. And now, you have four of them - soon to be five.
With seven wins from 16 starts, 8yo Annie Mc missed most of last season due to injury but is ready to get back on track this season with the Cheltenham Festival the target.
An impressive 5yo, she was bought by Rebecca Menzies on behalf of Coral Racing Club in May 2022. Showed her class by winning her maiden point-topoint at Fairyhouse by four lengths.
conservative Bought by Scott Dixon in 2022, our 3yo has a win at Southwell and five further places from his eight previous runs.
Joe Tizzard’s 4-year-old gelding is yet to run. He was sired by Westerner, and his dam is Eternally Grateful.
Joe won multiple Grade 1 races as a jockey before turning to training. He’s taken the reins at Venn Farm from his dad as he ventures into his first full season with runners in his own name.
With well over 200 winners across flat and national hunt racing, Rebecca is a force to be reckoned with among a new generation of trainers.

The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bred fillies and mares.
THE TWELVE CLUB was formed in 1924 by some racing enthusiasts with its primary objective being “to protect members from the clutches of the Bookmaker”. A competition has been run ever since for each Flat season in which its approximately 200 members all racing enthusiasts and many employed in racing choose twelve horses [hence the“Twelve”] prior to the season and notionally invest £1 at SP each time those horses run. The winner each year is the member whose Twelve shows the largest profit, with losers counting. A similar competition has most recently been introduced for the National Hunt season.
For many years the Twelve Club has made donations to racing charities and the connection with the British Racing School began in 1988. In 1993 Ian de Wesselow suggested that the Club make an annual award to the School’s two best trainees from the previous year Each year since, the Club has awarded the Twelve Club whip and a cash prize to the two leading trainees; the first award made by Sir Gordon Brunton was to Royston Ffrench in 1995.
The 2021 Twelve Club winners are Ruth Hextall [employer Toby Lawes] and Georgina Stuart-Menteth [Harry Eustace].
The presentation will take place in the winner’s enclosure today.

Thomas Darby (2021) Big Buck’s (2012) Inglis Drever (2007)Thistlecrack was successful at Newbury during the 2015-16 campaign when he went on to dominate the division, winning at both Cheltenham and Aintree, while Unowhatimeanharry took this race the season after winning the Albert Bartlett and more staying Grade 1s followed that year including the Long Walk and the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Punchestown Festival.
However, the most successful horse in the race’s history was the record breaking stayer Big Buck’s whose 18 race winning streak included four Long Distance Hurdle triumphs from 2009 to 2012.
He emerged at the end of a golden decade of staying hurdlers when Inglis Drever reeled off a Long Distance Hurdle hat-trick between 2005 and 2007.
He was preceded by the French great Baracouda, whose regular appearances in Britain for Francois Doumen included victories at Newbury in 2003 and 2004.
2019 Stayers’ Hurdle winner, Paisley Park finished runner up in this race in 2020 and third in 2021 and is back to try and go one place better but faces stiff opposition including last year’s winner Thomas Darby as well as Proschema and Champ. Dashel Drasher and Tea Clipper complete the six-runner field.
The Grade Two Coral Long Distance Hurdle has become a prime early season target for both established and would-be challengers for the Stayers’ Hurdle crown.Betting Forecast: 15-8 Champ (IRE), 7-2 Proschema (IRE), 9-2 Paisley Park (IRE), 13-2 Dashel Drasher (GB), 15-2 Thomas Darby (IRE), 33-1 Tea Clipper (IRE)
Race Summary: The classy CHAMP wasn’t on his game on his final outing last season but he usually goes well fresh, so he’s worth chancing to make another successful return. Proschema looked better than ever when scoring at Wetherby on return and hasn’t had much racing over 3m, so he’s a big danger, while a customary strong late run is expected from Paisley Park. 1-2-3: 1.CHAMP (IRE)
