FRIDAY 4TH AUGUST
A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME.
Today's feature race comes at 3:35, The Join Racing Tv Now Handicap, where we see five runners go to post Top course trainer Keith Dalgleish runs Gioia Cieca with the five-year-old looking to notch his first e win of the season at the sixth time of asking He is one of three American runners in this feature race with on time th e Ameri the others coming in the form of On A Session for trainers David and Nicola Barron and Manigordo for the Tim Easterby. Jockey Andrew Mullen has enjoyed a productive couple of weeks, having had six winners up at a strike rate of 16% in that time. He rides Castleberg Rock today The fifth and final runner in this is the h David Nolan booked to ride David O'Meara-trained Autumn Festival with t
is season, with five victories to his name He SAM JAMES tops the list for winners here at Musselburgh this n A Session as previously mentioned in the feature is booked to ride Grecian Princess, My Macho Man, On p of the day. WILLIAM PYLE will be aiming to boost his 20% race, Resilience and Stroxx in the final race ys He'll have the chance to increase that with rides on Chumbaa, Samurai strike rate for the past 14 days. Snedzz, St Andrew's Castle and Henery Hawk. s
KEITH DALGLEISH sends his usual strong contingent to the track, with his team spearheaded by Gioia Cieca and Mi Capricho. Only Dalgleish has a better record here this season than KARL BURKE, who sends just the one runner here today in the form of Indication Spirit. DAVID and NICOLA BARRON send On A Session and Ventorous here in a bid to add to their four winners at this course this season TRISTAN DAVIDSON has had four winners from his last seven runners and he send sjust the one runner here today That is the four-year-old Spirit Of Ash
This race is a five furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.
This is a one mile and four furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.
This is a seven furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 85 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80
This is a one mile and one furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.
This is a five furlongs handicap race for three-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.
This race is a five furlongs classified stakes for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 0 to 50 Unlike in a handicap when a horses rating reflects the weight that they will carry, the weights in this type of race are decided solely on the basis of age or sex This means that the higher rated horses should, theoretically, hold an advantage, as they are not forced to concede weight to lower rated rival.

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race
Good chance of being placed.
By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
Unlikely to win but not totally without hope
Can be given little or no chance
1.
Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.
1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.
2. With totepool at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse
3. At the totesport betting shop in the Links Pavilion, which is identical to a high street betting shop
4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.
Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet.
- Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off
- Keep your bet receipt safe You will need this to collect your winnings
- Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’.
- Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’. GOOD LUCK!
THE WINNING TRAINER, JOCKEY, OWNER AND BEST TURNED OUT YARD WILL EACH RECEIVE PRIZES SPONSORED BY EDINBURGH GIN.

Chumbaa has had a number of chances already but rates a big player on the back of last week’s Carlisle second. Willolarupi wouldn’t need to be any great shakes to play a hand on his debut, either

PLAY SMARTER
COPPER KNIGHT has failed to build on his encouraging reappearance in 4 subsequent starts but it would be no surprise were he to bounce back having dipped to a career-low mark. The 9-y-o has most to fear from Glory Fighter, who did the job well in first-time cheekpieces at Catterick last month and an 8lb rise may not be enough to prevent another bold bid. Khabib will also be a threat if ready to roll following a 3-month break.

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet s privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to mak a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erect around a fallen horse.
