THE TRACK

A RIGHT-HANDED OVAL CIRCUIT ALMOST A MILE AND A QUARTER IN EXTENT, WHICH JOINS THE STRAIGHT FIVE FURLONGS COURSE HALF-A-MILE FROM HOME. THE BENDS ARE SHARP, PUTTING BIG, LONG-STRIDING TYPES AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.

T TODAY’S TURE RACE FEA

The feature race of today’s meeting is the titular Edinburgh Cup Handicap Stakes. Raced over 1m, eleven take to e St the track for this exciting contest. Ian Williams’ Dancing In Paris looks one to watch after a hard fought victory at ck contest t Haydock back in April followed by a strong second at Sandown last time out. Old Smoke was a hugely comfortable winner of a Thirsk novice in April before unfortunately being hampered in the BetVictor London Gold Cup at hamper Newbury last month. Richard Fahey’s gelding is clearly on the up. The Charlie Johnston pair Lion Of War and Gareeb ewbury Char are also of interest Don’t discount Iato’s Angel either, Keith Dalgleish’s filly looked sharp at Redcar in April, and fi at Nottingham early last month, she has the ability to do well here while she has struggled since a below par effort m

JOCKEYS H TO WATCH

BILLY GARRITTY has already notched a pair of winners at Musselburgh g Stakes (2.30) who has a good chance as well as riding this term. He has two rides today with Sankari in the Selling wh milarly, JOE FANNING has been in great form this season, scoring outsider Venetian in the feature race (3.40) Similarly, bee h. He has five rides today including Manigordo in the second, who should do well. fourteen times in the last month. He also rides Gareeb in the Edinburgh Cup, who cannot be discounted DANIEL SHEEHY has been in sneaky good form of late and he takes the ride on Iato’s Angel, who could be a bit of a dark horse in the Edinburgh Cup. o’s o

TRAINERS TO WATCH

urgh this season and has found plenty of success

Leading course trainer KEITH DALGLEISH has had a great start to the season, with four winners already at this course, continuing his run on top in the Edinburgh Gin Championship. He saddles two here with Gioia Cieca (1.50) as well as Iato’s Angel (3.40) who could well be one to watch. KARL BURKE is right behind him in the Championship race however and saddles three of his own today Liamarty Dreams (1.50), Churros (2.30) and Fast Response (3.05) Both the former and the latter have a good shot at victory and could be enough to take him to the top of the leaderboard. RICHARD HANNON has only saddled one at Musselburgh so far this season, Love Billy Boy who scored here in April, giving him a 100% record at this course this season Heredia (3.05) looks likely to continue that record

TODAY’S RACING

RACE DESCRIPTIONS

1:15 THE EDINBURGH GIN CANNONBALL HANDICAP STAKES

Our opener is a seven furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 60 Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 60 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 55

1:50 THE EDINBURGH GIN CLASSIC HANDICAP STAKES

This is a seven furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 90 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 85

2:30 THE EDINBURGH GIN RASPBERRY SELLING STAKES

Selling Stakes exist as an outlet for connections to sell their horses. Any horse that wins a seller, such as this five furlongs contest for two-year-olds, is automatically put up for public auction in the Winners’ Enclosure at the end of the race and goes to the highest bidder, so make sure to head that way after the race as the auction is usually well worth seeing.

3:05 THE EDINBURGH GIN QUEEN OF SCOTS FILLIES' STAKES (LISTED RACE)

This seven furlongs contest for fillies and mares aged three-years-old and upwards is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race Initially, the weights are set at 8st 7Ib for three-year-olds and 9st 3lb for four-year-olds and upwards before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory, 5lb for a Group 3 success and 7Ib if scoring in a Group 2 race

3:40 THE EDINBURGH CUP HANDICAP STAKES

This is a one mile and one furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 0 to 90 Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.

4:15 THE EDINBURGH GIN SEASIDE HANDICAP STAKES

This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 65 Like most handicaps on the flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage

4:50 THE EDINBURGH GIN RHUBARB AND GINGER APPRENTICE HANDICAP STAKES

Our finale is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 46 to 55 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

STAR RATINGS EXPLAINED

Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: Selected to win the race

Good chance of being placed.

By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims

Unlikely to win but not totally without hope

Can be given little or no chance

PLACING A BET

HAVING A FLUTTER IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE FUN OF COMING RACING.

1.

PICK YOUR WINNER!

Many people select a horse based on it’s name or jockey colours or go to the Parade Ring to view the horses Alternatively you may wish to follow a particular jockey or trainer, or a tipster in a newspaper Others like to look at the horse’s previous races or ‘form’.

2. WHERE TO PLACE YOUR BET

1. In the Betting Ring, in front of the Grandstand, with a racecourse ‘bookie’. This is great fun as you can shop around for the bookmaker offering the biggest odds on your selection.

2. With totepool at one of their designated betting points all around the racecourse

3. At the totesport betting shop in the Links Pavilion, which is identical to a high street betting shop

4. At the totesport club office, if you are a member of the totesport club.

3. PLACE YOUR BET

Decide how much you want to stake, and what type of bet you would like to place Then Cheer your selection home! There are a few simple rules that you need to follow after placing your bet.

- Please check your receipt. Mistakes cannot be rectified after a race is off

- Keep your bet receipt safe You will need this to collect your winnings

- Don’t throw away your ticket until the racecourse announcer says ‘Weighed In’.

- Even if your horse has not won, the result may be changed if there is a ‘Stewards Enquiry’. GOOD LUCK!

A wide-open renewal with plenty of progressive and unexposed colts but MILITARY ORDER’s win at Lingfield was the most convincing of all the trials, so this brother to 2021 Derby winner Adayar has plenty going for him with his stamina guaranteed. Passenger arguably would have won the Dante at York (on only his second career start) had he not been forced to wait for a gap so he is high on the shortlist along with Chester Vase winner Arrest, who should continue to improve.

The return to this trip promises to suit ABDUCTION, who was denied a clear run at a crucial stage when a close-up third at Ayr recently. Jim Goldie’s charge was beaten twice by Manigordo over C&D last season but he is clearly in great form and is taken to emerge on top this time That said, Manigordo is greatly respected given his record here and is also arriving on the back of a near-miss at Ayr No Nay Nicki should be sharper following her reappearance spin at York and she also has claims

Last month’s London Gold Cup at Newbury is usually one of the hottest 3-y-o handicaps of the season so OLD SMOKE, who wasn’t beaten far into sixth in that, might be able to show he’s on a workable mark in these slightly calmer waters Dancing In Paris has made a strong start to his handicap career and is second choice ahead of Gareeb, who looks the pick of the Charlie Johnston trio Top-weight Coco Jack is another to consider

HORSE CARE AT MUSSELBURGH

cours edical

erected

At every race meeting at Musselburgh there are three specially qualified equine vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses in action During a race two vets follow the action from the centre of the course and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the Medical Teams responsible for the welfare of the Jockeys. The third vet is based at the Stable Yard where a close check is kept on all horses, especially those returning after a race. It is now standard practice for screens to be erected around any horse receiving veterinary attention on the ground This does not reflect on the severity of an injury, but allows the vet s privacy and the horse the opportunity, in a calm environment, to mak a recovery Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erect around a fallen horse.
