Welcome to our only evening meeting at Ludlow and our first “Countryside Day”.
Please do go and have a look at some of the stands in the Windsor Marquee and please give the South Shropshire Hunt a warm welcome as they parade their hounds prior to racing.
SAS Utilities and White Hall Flagstones are new to Ludlow as sponsors, so we hope they have an enjoyable evening. Thanks again to JM Construction, GC Rickards Ltd, and Behind Bars for their continued support.
We have the Lorna Brooke Memorial Race tonight with Lorna’s parents presenting the prizes Lorna was a gifted rider who regularly rode at Ludlow, always with a smile on her face.
We would like to welcome beneficiaries from Racing Welfare today & hope they have an enjoyable day with us.
We have one meeting left, this Sunday so please come and bring the young. We have music after the last so let’s hope for a warm, sunny evening
Best Wishes, Simon Sherwood
(Managing Director/Clerk of the Course).

HOW TO BET WITH AN ON-COURSE BOOKMAKER
1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to offer the correct stake money for your wager.
2. Ask the Bookmaker for your bet, name the horse, (the bookmaker won’t necessarily know it’s number). Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his clerk, correct bookmaker if he makes a mistake and receive your Betting Ticket as a receipt for your bet.
3. Should your horse happen to win, present your betting ticket to the bookmaker, check your winnings
4. Check with the bookmaker when placing a bet, the Place Terms. Place Betting, not all on course bookmakers accept each way bets, i.e. for a win or a place
5. In the unlikely event of a dispute after adhering to this procedure, the bookmaker will tell the punter to approach the Ring Official, who will advise the racegoer as to his rights.
6. Some course bookmakers have minimum stakes. e.g.£1, £5 or £10 but small backers are catered for in the racecourse Betting Shops.
HOW TO READ THE RACECARD
EACH WAY BETTING
The RCA and the bookmaking association have agreed the following terms for all bookmakers offering each way betting on course.
NON-HANDICAPS
5 - 7 runners; One quarter the odds 1,2
8+ runners; One fifth the odds 1,2,3
HANDICAPS
5 - 7 runners; One quarter the odds 1,2 8 - 11 runners; One fifth the odds 1,2,3 12 - 15 runners; One quarter the odds 1,2,3 16+ runners; One quarter the odds 1,2,3,4
All bookmakers must display on their boards whether they are betting each way or to win only.

PLAY SMARTER
A competitive opener with the narrow vote in favour of IKE SPORT. Off the mark in handicaps at Taunton in March prior to a good second at Huntingdon later that month, he may have found much quicker conditions against him on his latest outing and he could well be up to defying this sort of mark. Gwennie May Boy needs to shrug off a lesser effort latest but there’s an air of unfinished business about him in handicaps, whilst Pyramid Place is also worth a second look.

Probably flattered by proximity to the winner when runner-up at Taunton (21.7f, good to soft) last time but drop back in trip/quicker ground here are potentially positive factors. OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicap races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.
