TONIGHT’S RACING

Welcome to Chelmsford City Racecourse
On this warm summer’s evening, we have six races for you, starting with a 5f sprint for apprentice jockeys, which will be fast and furious and a good break from the stalls almost certainly essential. A 6f race for two-year-olds comes next with some interesting contenders. American Flight was an expensive yearling purchase and Dartrey is a well-bred unraced colt, owned by Juddmonte, who could be anything. The third and fourth races are competitive and open-looking handicaps with all eleven runners having a chance.
By the time we get to the fifth race, you should come down to the paddock to see some well-bred fillies who will be trying to get that all-important win under their belt. The Gosden stable are represented by two runners, one owned by Godolphin and the other by Juddmonte and Roger Varian has a Shadwell filly, who was second first time out this year to Blue Bolt, who won a Listed race at Sandown recently.
To end the evening, we have a fascinating 10f handicap in which I like the look of Backer Bilk, who has been knocking on the door and Sansanetti, who won here back in June.
Good luck and have a great evening.
Neil Graham Racing Director

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

Timeform Rating
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

A €750,000 purchase at the sales and bred in the purple as a half-brother to Group 1 winner Saffron Beach, DARTREY could be a talented newcomer for the Ralph Beckett team and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see him make a winning debut. American Flight finished last of three on her first start at Pontefract and is likely to step forward from that experience. Riffa Spirit, who hails from a yard in top form at present, is another open to improvement.

Those with experience don’t set the bar too high so this could rest between newcomers DARTREY and Deluded, with preference for Ralph Beckett’s well-related son of Lope de Vega over Charlie Fellowes’ Shaman colt. American Flight could emerge as the pick of those with form in the book in the battle for minor honours.

SIGNCASTLE CITY hasn’t always convinced with his finishing effort, but he nevertheless won three times in 2024 and returning to the all-weather could prove to be a good thing, given how smoothly he travelled through the race when a solid second over 7f here at the beginning of June. Crack Shot is a big threat on debut for the shrewd James Owen yard, while Bright Times Ahead needs to get back on track, but her opening mark looks fair and she’s not one to give up on just yet.

Glistening failed to fire when sent off favourite at Newbury on her reappearance and is looking to bounce back. MAJAZ also returned a beaten favourite at Yarmouth last month, but gave the strong impression this extra test of stamina would suit in the process. Lady Ridgewood returns to maiden company with a shout, while Bronte Beach is a newcomer to keep an eye on.

Though MAJAZ rather disappointingly failed to land the odds in a Yarmouth maiden last month, this step up in trip should be in her favour and she’s given another chance to confirm the promise she showed when chasing home subsequent Listed winner Blue Bolt at Newbury in June. Lady Ridgewood shades preference ahead of Glistening for forecast purposes, while the latter’s stablemate Bronte Beach needs a second look in the betting.
Great British Bonus Scheme
The Great British Bonus (GBB) incentivises and rewards with breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by paying out bonuses of up to £100,000 per filly And now with GBBPlus to further incentivise staying fillies and chasing mares, there are more reasons than ever to breed, buy and race British. Majority funded by the HBLB.
Prize Money
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £170,364 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from 23rd June to 14th September 2025

CITY SELECTIONS
NIGHT TARA looks a likely type representing Sir Mark Prescott’s yard. She has shown little in three starts over shorter trips, but the half-sister to a 1m4f winner has untapped potential over middle distances and could prove well treated on her handicap debut. Tough and consistent, another good effort from Backer Bilk looks assured, while Al Baarez posted his best effort so far when fourth at Windsor.
