AverywarmwelcometoKemptonParkCommunityRacedayforanunforgettable day of racing and celebration of 80 years since Victory in Europe. While VE Day itself falls on 8th May, this year Monday 5th May has been officially dedicated to community celebrations throughout the nation.
In honour of this special anniversary, we are delighted to be joined by the Sunbury and Shepperton Local History Society, who will be presenting a fascinating look into Kempton Park’s wartime history. During World War II, the racecourse was used as a prisoner of war reception centre and saw significant wartime activity, including aircraft incidents and anti-aircraft gun installations. Today’s display provides a meaningful opportunity to connect with that legacy.
This afternoon also marks the official launch of our new Sensory Room in partnership with Autism in Racing, offering a calm and welcoming space for individuals with sensory processing needs. This important addition reflects our continued commitment to inclusivity and will be available on all racedays going forward. And finally, staying with our local theme, we are delighted to have signed the Real Deal National Charter which, alongside our Thursday market partner Hughmark International, will continue to ensure a safe and fair environment in which to shop and to trade
We would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors Unibet for their generous contribution across today’s card and to Molson Coors for their continued support.
We would also like to extend our gratitude to our community partners Shooting Stars Hospice, Staines Rugby Club, Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare and Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals Charity who join us today to showcase the fantastic work they do locally.
Off the track we invite families to enjoy our Great British Picnic Zone, vintagethemed entertainment and funfair rides, ensuring a fantastic day out for everyone
We hope you enjoy a day of thrilling racing, community celebration and reflection as we honour the past and look ahead together.

HORSE RACING IN WW2
The outbreak ofWorld War II on September 1st, 1939, obviously had a significant effect on all aspects of life in the United Kingdom, with horseracing looking very different for the conflict’s six-year duration.
One of the first effects of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain’s declaration of war with Germany was the cancellation of that year’s St Leger at Doncaster, which had been due to take place later in September. This sadly meant the great horse BLUE PETER, who had won the 1939 2000 Guineas and Derby, was denied the chance of a Triple Crown bid.
BLUE PETER would prove to be the last Derby winner to win at Epsom Downs until 1946 with the racecourse, along with many others, being commandeered for military use for the duration of the war.
As had been the case in World War I, the five Classic races (1000 Guineas, 2000 Guineas, Oaks. Derby & St Leger) were all staged at Newmarket during World War II along with certain other significant races such as the Gold Cup, which was transferred from Royal Ascot. There were still some great horses running however, including DANTE who landed the 1945 Derby and remains the latest Northern-trained winner of the premier Classic. Another significant Derby winner was OWEN TUDOR (1941), who went on to win the replacement Gold Cup the following year and is the last horse to win both races. OWEN TUDOR went on to a highly successful stud career, with his offspring including superstar miler TUDOR MINSTREL and outstanding sprinter ABERNANT
SUN CHARIOT was the outstanding filly to race during World War II. Racing in the Royal silks of King George VI, she completed the Fillies’ Triple Crown with victories in the 1942 1000 Guineas, Oaks and St Leger, where she defeated Derby winner WATLING STREET.
Jump racing was also similarly impacted during World War II. The Grand National did go ahead at Aintree in 1940 with a large military presence and was won by BOGSKAR. Tragically BOGSKAR’S jockey, Flight Sergeant Mervyn Jones, was lost in a Spitfire reconnaissance flight over Norway two years later.
The Grand National did not take place again until 1946 after the war had ended. The same year also saw the Derby return to Epsom Downs.
Although the 1946 Derby winner was returned at 50-1, the result was not universally cheered by bookmakers as the name of the horse was popular with returning service personnel. The grey colt’s name was AIRBORNE.
Racing did not resume at Kempton Park until a major renovation project was completed in 1947.
KEMPTON PARK AND THE SECOND WORLD WAR –NICK POLLARD
80 years ago on 8th May 1945, the Second World War came to an end in Europe with the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany, although the war against Japan in the Far East was to carry on until August. Winston Churchill, the inspirational wartime Prime Minister, broadcast to the nation, and declared that the day would be known as ‘Victory in Europe’ or VE Day. Crowds of people gathered in joyful celebration at the end of nearly six years of war, in which many had lost loved ones or seen them injured. People were determined to celebrate, and spontaneous parties were held in many streets. Particular efforts were made to give children a treat, as wartime rationing meant that such things as sweets, bananas and oranges were almost unobtainable.
At Kempton Park, the end of the war meant that the racecourse could look forward to hosting horse racing again. When war broke out, it had been taken over for the housing of internees from enemy countries: Germans, and later Italian, civilians who were living in this country. They were subsequently taken to more permanent internment camps elsewhere. Later it became No 9 Prisoner of War reception camp, where captured German and Italian servicemen were brought down from London by train. After an initial screening to determine their role in the war and whether they were ordinary soldiers or the more extreme Nazis and Fascists, they were sent on to other camps in more remote parts of the country
Members of 79 Light Anti-Aircraft Battery at Kempton Park during the war.
Victory in Europe Parade in Sunbury
The racecourse saw its share of action too – the nearby Sunbury Station was partially destroyed by a bombing raid in 1940, and in September 1944 a V2 rocket hit the waterworks to the north, just the other side of Hanworth Road (the present A316) A battery of Light AntiAircraft guns was deployed at Kempton, presumably to protect the waterworks which supplied a large share of London’s water, but they were not effective against rockets. On the 18th October 1940 a terrible tragedy occurred at Kempton Park when two RAF Hurricane fighters crashed on the racecourse, having been forced to land because of bad fog while trying to find their way back to their base at Northolt. Both of the young pilots, one British and one Polish, were killed.
Elsewhere in Sunbury, the war had diverted industry from peacetime production to support for the war. The Anglo Iranian Oil Company (later to become BP) had their research station at Sunbury The scientists working there came up with an improved way of making high octane fuel, essential for fighter aircraft. They also developed a method of burning fuel to clear airfields of fog, and the flexible pipeline which carried fuel under the English Channel to the allied armies fighting to retake western Europe after D-Day.
The Sunbury and Shepperton Local History Society and Spelthorne Museum have joined forces to present the story of the local area in the Second World War, so do come and visit our display in the grandstand.

A good race for the grade and DANCINGWITHMYSELF might be able to resume winning ways on the back of a fine return at Ripon recently Charmaine, Billiegee and Umbria are all in the mix too, with the thriving Elterwater perhaps vulnerable over this sort of trip

PLAY SMARTER
It’s not hard to see TELEPATHIC having more to offer this year after his October Wolverhampton romp and he can make a successful return. Pietro caught the eye on his comeback here and can get involved. Winston’s Warrior is another likely improver this season.

WILLINGLY: Following its run on 12/2/2025 it was reported that the horse stopped quickly
The pick of several in-form candidates is BOLD SUITOR, who was ridden too aggressively when fading into fourth at Wolverhampton a fortnight ago and, provided he is ridden with a bit more restraint this time, the 8-y-o will surely go close. Triggered went close at Chelmsford recently and he is just about second choice ahead of The Spotlight Kid and El Hibri.
