WELCOME
Good afternoon and welcome to Hamilton Park’s opening day of the season, the Les Hoey MBE DreamMaker Foundation Family Raceday. There’s always a real sense of excitement amongst the team as we prepare to open our gates for the first fixture of the year.
We are delighted that prize money is set to exceed £1.64M this season which will be a new record for Hamilton Park, with investment continuing across all levels of the race programme. This summer will see two fixtures worth £200k or more including the welcome return of the Sky Bet Sunday Series on Sunday 14 May Our historic Lanark Silver Bell fixture will also enjoy significant upgrades with £212,000 up for grabs on Friday 25 August, making it the richest fixture in our history
Major investment has been made to further improve the experience we offer to our visiting Owners & Trainers with new furniture and a spectacular new deck overlooking the Parade Ring. We have also upgraded the Owners & Trainers dining offer which we hope will be well received. Following feedback from our visitors we have taken the decision to move the Owners dining area back to the marquee next to the Owners &Trainers bar, formally the Paddock Café. This in turn means that The Hill Bar and Restaurant is now open to all racegoers, providing an indoor food, drink and coffee service The new menu looks delicious with a range of Barrel & Stone pizzas, light snacks and main meals available for seated dining.
The whole team have been working incredibly hard over the winter to get us ‘raceday ready’. Along with the improvements to our Owners facilities, Bravehearts Bar and the William Hill betting shop have had a complete makeover, bringing these areas up to the standards set across the rest of the racecourse My thanks go to the entire Hamilton Park team for their efforts in preparing for this season.
Another change will see Carol Bartley take over the critical role of Clerk of the Course, having completed her training under the watchful eye of Harriet Graham. Today will be Carol’s first full fixture as our Clerk and I am sure you will all join me in wishing her well. And so we turn our attention to today’s racing which looks set to be incredibly competitive across the card. Today’s second race, the £30,000 Patersons of Greenoakhill Buttonhook Handicap, will be shown live on ITV & STV Racing and shows off a key feature of our track. The 1m 5f start is just behind the Winning Line and makes for a great spectacle as the horses break from the stalls – It’s definitely worth heading down to the rail to watch! Lanark Silver Bell winner Wickywickywheels is top of the weights for Jim Goldie and our reigning Champion Owner Jimmy Long, who will no doubt be looking to get the defence of his title off to a fast start today Local trainer Keith Dalgleish has once again targeted this race with three runners – Good Show, El Picador and Haizoom, whilst Roger Varian runs Postileo who will be looking to challenge.
At 3.40pm our attention will turn briefly to Newmarket for the Qipco 1000 Guineas, to see who will claim one of Britain’s five Classic races. We’ll be showing the race on the screens around the course and our on-course betting partners will be able to help if you’re looking to have a flutter.
Our thanks go to all of today’s sponsors - Les Hoey MBE DreamMaker Foundation, Patersons of Greenoakhill, Darley, European Breeders Fund, Lisa & Ian Todd, Elegance by Robyn, Nicole & Ryan Degan and Fraser Tool Hire. Your support is very much appreciated and I do hope you enjoy your afternoon with us at Hamilton Park.
Have a great day today and I hope you start the season with a winner or two!
Kind regards,
ASHLEY MOON, RACECOURSE MANAGING DIRECTOR

RACING JARGON BUSTER

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 49 to 68. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

THE PATERSONS OF GREENOAKHILL BUTTONHOOK HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 3)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile and five furlongs handicap race for fouryear-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 85 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80.

Third Race
2.35p.m. THE DARLEY EBF NOVICE STAKES (CLASS 2) (GBB RACE)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This contest is a Novice Stakes, run over a distance of one five furlongs. There are a variety of reasons why the threeyear-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career
RACE STATISTICS
Leading course trainer (17-22): J Goldie (33 wins from 265 runners, 12%) runs WAMBAMWIGWAM
Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): T Easterby (4 wins from 69 runners, 6%) runs NORTHCLIFF
Longest Traveller: TAJALLA trained by R Varian, Newmarket, 360 miles.
about FIVE FURLONGS (5f abt 7yds) (1000m)

RACE SUMMARY: An interesting race TAJALLA hasn’t been seen since his debut win a year ago but his entry in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup suggests connections are hopeful he can make up for lost time so he’s preferred to fellow debut scorer Silent Words. Northcliff is much more exposed than the aforementioned pair but also has the form to be bang there.

THE LISA TODD 40TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 5)
RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile and three furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 51 to 70. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb

PLAY SMARTER
TAHIYRA looked very good when comfortably accounting for Meditate in the Moyglare and is selected to prove too strong for her old rival again, although Aidan O’Brien’s filly was well suited by the step up to 1m in the Breeders’ Cup and may get a bit closer this time. The fact Remarquee still looked far from the finished article in the Fred Darling raises a few doubts about how she’ll handle the Dip but she must be highly talented and is third choice ahead of Dream of Love.

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 46 to 65. Like most handicaps on the Flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage

RACE DESCRIPTION
This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 56 to 75. Like all handicaps on today’s card this means that should a horse rated 75 take part they would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 70.
RACE STATISTICS
Leading course trainer (17-22): J Goldie (33 wins from 265 runners, 12%) runs SHINE ON BRENDAN

RACE SUMMARY: WESTERNESSE made his effort slightly earlier than ideal starting out for new connections when runner-up at Wetherby last week and David O’Meara’s 4-y-o can open his account having just a second outing in handicap company. The main danger could emerge from Hiromichi, who regained the winning thread at Bath on Monday and should be bang there again under a penalty.
