“The best is yet to come...”

I would like to warmly welcome all racegoers to the Curragh today for our second Classic of the 2025 flat racing season – the Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas as well as the prestigious Tattersalls Gold Cup.

Many thanks to all owners with runners here today – we greatly appreciate your support and wish you success on the track. Please enjoy the hospitality in our Tattersalls Owners Club on Level 2 of the racecourse.

I would also like to thank our race sponsors Tally Ho Stud, Irish Stallion Farms, Gain, Lanwades Stud, QuinnBet, the Glenroyal Hotel and Shoda Cafe and of course our feature race sponsors Tattersalls who are great supporters of Irish racing.

Earlier this week we were delighted to announce a three-year extension of our partnership with Tattersalls which covers the three Group 1 races over Guineas weekend and the Owners and Trainers Lounge here at the Curragh. We are grateful to Edmond Mahony and his team for their consistent support of the Curragh.

Last year we had 70 different winning trainers here at the Curragh and a strong British challenge was a feature of the year. Our 11 Group 1 races were shared amongst 8 winning trainers, and we enjoyed some outstanding racing. Once again, we are seeing a good spread of winners at the Curragh this year and are delighted at the number of English trained runners throughout the weekend – you are very welcome, and we hope you enjoy your visit to the Curragh.

Our two Group1 feature races are part of the Tote World Pool and we are grateful to our friends in the Hong Kong Jockey Club for this partnership. The larger pools should increase the odds of many horses, so good luck with your choices.

In addition to the excellent racing, there’s a fantastic array of off-track entertainment to enjoy including Carnival at the Curragh. We hope our junior racegoers enjoy the exciting selection of rides, games, and fun activities we’ve lined up just for them. Throughout the day, you can also soak up the festival atmosphere with live entertainment in both the Paddock Bar and Lilywhites Lounge the perfect places to relax, mingle, and enjoy the festival spirit!

Our team are here to assist with any enquiries and observations you may have, so please don’t hesitate to contact one of us.

Enjoy the racing and we look forward to seeing you back at the Curragh many more times during the year.

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CURRAGH COMMENT

CAPE SOUNION showed smart ability on debut and can put that experience to good use Although the well-bred winner of that Naas race was subsequently well beaten at Group 3 level, the selection arguably shaped with more promise as she missed the break, had to be switched to challenge and finished well. She should improve from that run. Beautify is out of Words, who was a Group 3 winner, and is a half-sister to a Listed winner. Dancing Saxon boasts a smart pedigree, while Paris Carver was a 600,000-dollar breeze-up purchase

CURRAGH COMMENT

ALBERT EINSTEIN produced a smart effort on his debut recently From a good family and out of a juvenile Group-placed dam, he was accompanied by his trainer to the start for that Naas introduction and produced a fine performance to wear down the once-raced runner-up He should continue to progress. Andab is a brother to Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Victoria Road and he too showed high-class potential over C&D earlier this month. He should give the selection a good race Power Blue wasn’t beaten far in Listed company here and also commands attention.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Irish Derby winner LOS ANGELES is the pick amongst some middle-distance heavyweights. His Classic success came between English Derby and Prix de l’Arc third-placings and while he would prefer 1m4f, today’s race is a helpful 110 yards further than when beating White Birch earlier this month. Admittedly well-held by Anmaat in October’s British Champion Stakes, the selection was hampered then while the race also came 13 days after his fine Arc effort. Anmaat has progressed with racing and relishes soft ground, but needs to produce his best form to win on seasonal reappearance Last year’s winner White Birch should compete, while Kalpana won October’s British Champion Fillies & Mares Stakes but now meets males racing over a slightly inadequate distance WIN: LOS ANGELES DANGER: Anmaat

RACESPONSOR

Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas The Jockeys

Gavin Ryan (1. Atsila)

Gavin Ryan had ridden over 20 winners before he sat his Leaving Cert in 2019 The following year, he was crowned champion apprentice when he rode 51 winners, which saw him finish sixth in the overall jockeys’ championship

He has quickly established himself in the top echelons of Irish jockeys. His relationship with trainer Donnacha O’Brien has been key in that regard, and he landed his first Group 1 race when he rode Proud And Regal to victory for the trainer in the Criterium International at Saint-Cloud in October 2022. He rode Atsila to win her maiden on her racecourse debut at Bellewstown last month, and he rode her again to win the Group 3 Athasi Stakes at The Curragh three weeks ago, over the Irish 1000 Guineas course and distance, and he goes into today’s race with a real chance of adding an Irish 1000 Guineas to his CV

David Egan (2. California Dreamer)

It’s not a bit surprising that David Egan can ride horses. He’s bred for it. Son of Sandra Hughes, who trained Thunder And Roses to win the Irish Grand National, and multiple Group 1-winning jockey John Egan, David’s grandfather is the late Dessie Hughes, top class jockey, top class trainer, top class person, and his uncle is Richard Hughes, three-time champion jockey in Britain. Champion apprentice in Britain in 2017, David won his first Group 1 race when he steered Mishriff to victory in the Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan in 2021, and he won his second when he won the Juddmonte International at York four months later on the same Mishriff He won his first Classic just over a year later when he claimed the St Leger at Doncaster on Eldar Eldarov, and he landed his first Irish Classic 364 days later when he won the Irish St Leger on the same horse back home at The Curragh.

Gary Carroll (3. Cercene)

Son of jockey Raymond Carroll, who rode Gonzales to victory in the Irish St Leger in 1980 for trainer Vincent O’Brien and owner Robert Sangster, Gary Carroll claimed the first big-race win of his career when, as a 5lb claimer, he won the Ebor at York in 2009 on the Willie Mullins-trained Sesenta.

Champion apprentice in Ireland the same year with 44 winners, he shared the apprentices’ title too in 2010 with Joseph O’Brien and Ben Curtis, at the end of a three-way tussle that went all the way to the final day of the season. In the top 10 in the Irish jockeys’ championship every year for the last five years, Gary rode Quick Suzy to win the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2021 for Gavin Cromwell, and he rode Snellen to win the Chesham Stakes back at Royal Ascot, also for Gavin Cromwell, two years later A strong relationship has evolved between the rider and the Gold Cup-winning trainer, as it was between the rider and trainer Joe Murphy, for whom he rode Gustavus Weston to win the Greenlands Stakes on this weekend in 2021, and for whom he rides Cercene in the Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas today

Billy Lee (4. City Of Memphis)

If it wasn’t for Colin Keane, Billy Lee would have been champion jockey in Ireland for each of the last three years. In 2022, he went mighty close, he was one ahead with five racing days left in the season. He was second again in 2023, and again last year, when he broke through the 100-winner barrier for the calendar year

Billy Lee landed his first Group 1 prize when he won the Matron Stakes in 2014 in Fiesolana for trainer Willie McCreery, also a first Group 1 win for the trainer He won the Prix Jacques le Marois in 2019 on Romanised and he won the Flying Five on Moss Tucker, both for Ken Condon, and he won Group 1 races in 2022 on La Petit Coco and Pearls Galore, both for Paddy Twomey, with whom he has struck up a fantastic relationship, and for whom he rides City Of Memphis in the Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas today

Hollie Doyle (5. Duty First)

Hollie Doyle is a trend-setter, a glass-ceiling-breaker When she won the Prix de Diane, the French Oaks, on Nashwa in 2022 for John and Thady Gosden, she became the first female rider to win a European Group 1 Classic. When she won the Carey Group Handicap at Ascot two weeks ago on Brindavan for Sean Woods, she notched up her 1,023rd winner in Britain, more than any other female rider ever

Voted the Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year in 2020, and third in the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year Award the same year, Hollie Doyle won her first Group 1 race when she drove the Archie Watson-trained Glen Shiel to victory in the British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot in October 2020, getting the Pivotal gelding home by a nose from Brando More victories at the highest level followed, Trueshan for Alan King in the Goodwood Cup and in the Prix

du Cadran, and The Platinum Queen for Richard Fahey in the Prix de l’Abbaye, while she and Nashwa followed up their Prix de Diane victory by winning the Nassau Stakes later in 2022 and by winning the Falmouth Stakes in 2023.

Joint-second in the British jockeys’ championship in 2022, a higher placing than any other female rider ever, she rode her first Group 1 winner in Ireland when she landed the Flying Five on Bradsell last September for Archie Watson. She rides Duty First today, also for Archie Watson, in her bid to achieve another milestone and win her first Irish Classic.

Oisín Murphy (6. Officer)

A native of Killarney in County Kerry, Oisín Murphy spent much of his formative time as a fledgling rider with his uncle Jim Culloty, who famously rode Best Mate to 12 of his 14 wins, including his three victories in the Cheltenham Gold Cup

It was always flat racing for Oisín Murphy though and, after bursting onto the scene in 2013 when with Andrew Balding in Britain, he embarked on a fast-track to the top of the sport. Champion apprentice in Britain in 2014, he claimed the champion jockey’s title in Britain for the first time in 2019, a title he retained in 2020 and in 2021, and one which he regained last year

He has added many of the top races around the world to his CV: the Prix de la Foret in France, the Japan Cup, the Breeders’ Cup Distaff in America, the Hong Kong Vase, the Dubai Turf, as well as the 1000 Guineas and the 2000 Guineas in Britain, and the Nassau Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and the Commonwealth Cup and the Eclipse He landed his biggest win to date in Ireland in September 2018, when he drove Roaring Lion to victory in the Irish Champion Stakes, and he will obviously be hoping to add to his Irish Group 1 haul today on Flight.

Colin Keane (7. Jaliyah)

Colin Keane is Ireland’s champion jockey He has been Ireland’s champion jockey every year for the last five years. It’s a continuum.

In 2021, he rode 141 winners in Ireland, more winners than any jockey had ever ridden in one Irish Flat racing season, beating the previous best by 15. It is likely that tally will stand for a long time, unless Keane himself beats it sometime soon.

He travels too Recognition of his talents goes well beyond Ireland’s borders these days. He has won Group 1 races in Ireland, France, Italy and America and, when David Menuisier was looking for a rider for Tamfana in the Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket last October, it wasn’t wholly surprising that Colin Keane was his go-to jockey The perennial champion delivered too, unsurprisingly, with a ride of extreme simplicity and maximum efficiency, that saw him land his first Group 1 prize in Britain.

Wayne Lordan (8. January)

From Upton in County Cork, Wayne Lordan rode his first Group 1 winner in August 2010, when he sprang a 100/1 shock on the then unheralded Sole Power in the Nunthorpe Stakes at York.

It is somewhat incongruous that he beat the Aidan O’Brien-trained favourite Starspangledbanner into second place that day because, these days, trainer and rider are usually on the same team, enjoying many successes together at the highest level. They have teamed up to win the 1000 Guineas with Winter and Hermosa, the Matron Stakes with Hydrangea, the Tattersalls Gold Cup with Magical and the Moyglare Stud Stakes with Lake Victoria. Wayne Lordan rode January to win her maiden at Gowran Park in June last year, and he is back on board the Kingman filly again today for her seasonal return in the Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas.

Ryan Moore (9. Lake Victoria)

Ryan Moore won 19 Group or Grade 1 races last year. He won 19 Group or Grade 1 races too in 2023, at least one Group 1 win every month from March to November inclusive, and dotted, as they were, around the globe: Ireland, Britain, France, Dubai, Australia, America. On four different continents. He is the go-to international rider, the jockey to whom the planet looks, and he is Aidan O’Brien’s number one

Name a famous horse race in the world, anywhere in the world, and Ryan Moore has probably won it. The Epsom Derby? Of course, four times. The Oaks? Four times too The Ascot Gold Cup? Also four times. The Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in France? Twice The Prix du Cadran, also in France? Also twice. The Bayerisches Zuchtrennen in Germany? Linngari, 2008. The Gran Criterium in Italy? Scintillo, 2007

Go further afield. The Breeders’ Cup Turf in America? Yes, five times. The Canadian International? Twice. The Hong Kong Vase? Three times. The Japan Cup? Twice. The Tenno Sho? The Asahi Hai Futurity? Yes and yes. The Dubia Sheema Classic? Check. The Dubai Turf? Check again. The Cox Plate in Australia? The Golden Slipper? The Mackinnon Stakes? Yes, yes and yes. The Melbourne Cup? The race that stops a nation (Australia)? Protectionist, 2014. The Irish 1000 Guineas? Three times. Marvellous, Winter and Hermosa. The market says that he is likely to make it four times today on Lake Victoria.

Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas The Jockeys Cont.

Simmering)

Dylan Browne McMonagle’s reputation reached racing before he did. 218 wins on the pony racing circuit will do that. And the Dingle Derby, and just about every race at Dingle.

He hit the ground running too when he took out his apprentice’s licence He rode his first Group race winner in April 2021, Baron Samedi in the Group 3 Vintage Crop Stakes at Navan, a 20/1 shot on the day and still an apprentice Trainer Joseph O’Brien was happy to put him up in a Group race, even though an apprentice can’t utilise his claim in a Group race

And it snowballed. Champion apprentice for the first time in 2021, champion apprentice for the second time in 2022, first Group 1 win in September 2022, Al Riffa in the National Stakes for his boss Joseph O’Brien. He rode the Ollie Sangster-trained Simmering for the first time in the Group 2 Prix du Calvados at Deauville last August, and he delivered her with a well-timed run to win easily He rode the Too Darn Hot filly again in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket three weeks ago, in which they finished third, and he will be hoping that they can go two places better today

Chris Hayes (11. Swelter)

It is ironic that Chris Hayes rode his first winner on a horse named Anonymity.

Almost all of the rider’s early big-race wins were for Kevin Prendergast. It is nine years ago this weekend that he rode Awtaad for his boss in the Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas, and the pair of them came home two and a half lengths clear of the Newmarket Guineas winner Galileo Gold.

Many more Group 1 wins have followed since, Search For A Song and Romantic Proposal and Homeless Songs. In 2022, Chris Hayes rode Tahiyra for Dermot Weld to win the Moyglare Stud Stakes, and in 2023 he rode the Siyouni filly to win the Irish 1000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes and the Matron Stakes.

He has struck up a fantastic partnership with Dermot Weld. Together, they have won two of the last three renewals of the Irish 1000 Guineas with Homeless Songs and Tahiyra and, with Swelter, they have a big chance of further enhancing that record today

Shane Foley (12. Tamam Desert)

Shane Foley rode the first Group 1 winner of his career on this weekend nine years ago, when he drove the Adrian Keatley-trained filly Jet Setting home in the Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas, getting to the winning line a head in front of warm favourite Minding. And he rode his second on this weekend seven years ago, when he teamed up with trainer Ken Condon and won the Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas on the 25/1 shot Romanised.

His latest Group 1 win was at Doncaster in October, when he teamed up with Jessica Harrington, as is his wont these days, and got Hotazhell home by a nose in the Futurity Trophy He has been teaming up with Jessica Harrington for a while now, quite successfully too, as evidenced by the exploits of Millisle and Albigna and Lucky Vega and No Speak Alexander and Discoveries and Magical Lagoon at the top level. He rode Tamam Desert for Eoghan O’Neill for the first time on her debut this season in the Naas Oaks Trial two weeks ago The Sea The Moon filly should come on for that run, and she is a lively outsider in the Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas today.

Ridden by Danny Tudhope, Fallen Angel proved her love for the Curragh after returning to the scene of last year’s Moyglare victory to make it 2-2 here. She dictated the fractions and responded generously when asked to raise the tempo from 2f down, winning with plenty to spare The daughter of Too Darn Hot looked at home in the rain-softened conditions to win in emphatic style by over two and a half lengths. A Lilac Rolla outrun her odds to finish second, while Aidan O’Brien had to settle for third this year with Opera Singer

Starting from stalls. Value to winner: €285000; Second: €100000; Third: €50000; Fourth: €25000; Fifth: €15000; Sixth: €10000. (For Race Conditions see page 54)

CURRAGH COMMENT

Almost certain to have improved from Newmarket, LAKE VICTORIA can reverse form with both Flight and Simmering. Having been slow to come to hand this spring, trainer Aidan O’Brien had expressed doubts about the filly being ready in time for the English Guineas. To her credit, the daughter of Frankel ran a huge race, staying on nicely inside the last furlong to finish sixth. Flight, who outran her odds to chase home the winner at Newmarket, should also be better for that first start of the season. The unexposed Swelter and Newmarket third Simmering are also worthy of consideration.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Runner-up in a Group 3 at Baden-Baden on her final start as a juvenile, LA GUAPISIMA can defy top-weight. Having her first start for trainer Gavin Cromwell, the French Listed winner sets a high standard in a race of this nature Her presence at the head of the weights also means that the four towards the bottom are forced to race from out of the handicap Given her apparent preference for soft ground, any rain that falls will be welcome Shiota, who landed a competitive handicap at Naas recently, has to be respected despite her subsequent rise Varshini and Empress Artemis are others to consider

CURRAGH COMMENT

A Grade 3 winner over fences at Thurles on his penultimate start, COMMON PRACTICE is undeniably well treated on his return to the Flat. Lightly raced in this sphere in recent years, the Joseph O’Brien-trained gelding can race off 1lb lower than when narrowly denied at the Galway Festival in 2022. Prior to that effort, the son of Gleneagles had won the Apprentice Derby at this track. Given his rate of improvement over jumps subsequently, it is hard to believe that a mark of 81 is beyond him. Killarney runner-up Robbies Rock has to be a serious contender in first-time cheekpieces, while both Molly Hall and Granite Bay deserve consideration.

CURRAGH COMMENT

Having caught the eye when finishing second at Naas on her debut last month, MITTENS can open her account. The Jessica Harrington-trained filly lost her position early in the straight before staying on strongly to take minor honours close home A Munster Oaks entry suggests the daughter of Night Of Thunder has been pleasing connections in the wake of that promising start. A half-sister to a Group 1-placed colt, Gifted has to be respected on her introduction. Aidan O’Brien has struck with a number of similar types in recent weeks. Matrice, who wears first-time cheekpieces, is another who holds claims.
