I would like to extend a warm welcome to you all for the second day of the 2023 season here at the Curragh.
Today we honour two great jockeys and heroes of the Curragh – the late Lester Piggott who passed away last year and Kevin Manning who quietly announced his retirement last autumn after a remarkable career spanning over forty years. Both riders graced the Curragh turf with distinction, and we are very much looking forward to paying tribute to them today.
We are grateful to today’s race sponsors - the Irish European Breeders Fund, the Irish National Stud, Tote Ireland, Holden Plant Rentals and the Piggott family for their support of today’s programme.
We are particularly pleased to showcase an exhibition of memorabilia associated with the life and career of Lester Piggott on Level 1 of the grandstand – please take the time to visit and enjoy this unique display which was lovingly put together by Nick O’Toole. We will also make a special presentation to Kevin Manning in the parade ring at 2.50 pm,
We have made some changes to our offering this year which we hope you will enjoy, and we are always interested in hearing customer feedback. Please try out Orbys Bistro, the Champagne Bar, Lilywhites Bar and the various facilities in Champions Hall. Free seating is also available for racegoers at the front of the stand throughout the final furlong. The Curragh Kids Zone is located close to the playground with free activities for younger racegoers.
In 2023, the Curragh will stage 23 race meetings in total and we have an exciting programme of quality flat racing on offer throughout the year. Our next meeting on Bank Holiday Monday 1st May is themed as the Newbridge Parishes Community Race Day which has raised in excess of €600,000 for community based projects over 40 years
Finally, I would like to thank all owners with runners here today also - we hope your experience is a good one and we thank you for your support.

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Thia is the pick of those with race experience having shown some encouraging signs when fourth at Cork. That said, preference is still for DEMOCRACY, who is a full-brother to last year’s Oh So Sharp winner and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf fourth Midnight Mile. River Tiber, a stablemate of the selection, is an obvious threat given that he cost 480,000gns last year, while Jalaybee is bred to be quick and is another to note.

The Curragh is delighted to acknowledge the outstanding riding career of Kevin Manning. A presentation will be made to him in the parade ring at approximate 2.50pm
Trading Leather broke smartly from stall five and was quickly up into a good position, just behind the leaders. He was a little keen through the first furlong, but Kevin Manning quickly had him settled and into his racing rhythm, third place and one off the rail behind a good pace. Perfectly positioned. Quintessential Kevin Manning.
By the time they got to the top of the hill, five furlongs to run in the 2013 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, the leader Ralston Road had skipped about 10 lengths clear of him, but Kevin Manning still sat easily, comfortable in the knowledge that the five-furlong pole is a long way from home at The Curragh.
Little White Cloud moved up on his outside as they raced around the home turn, so he angled out a little, just to make sure that he wouldn’t get caught in a pocket if the leaders dropped back. He gave Trading Leather a little squeeze, but it wasn’t until they had left the two-furlong marker behind that the rider asked his horse for his effort. When he did, Trading Leather dug deep. Jim Bolger’s horse led on the run to the furlong marker and he responded to his rider’s call, keeping on strongly to hit the line almost two lengths clear of his closest pursuer, going away again on the run to the winning post.
Kevin Manning had ridden many big-race winners before, and he would ride many more between then and the day that he announced his retirement from the saddle last October, but there was something special about Trading Leather. It was his home Derby for starters, the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at The Curragh, five years after he had won the Epsom Derby on New Approach.
And Trading Leather was all home-grown. Bred and trained by his wife Úna’s father Jim Bolger, owned by Úna’s mother Jackie, by Teofilo, the champion juvenile, unbeaten in five, a dual Group 1 winner who was also owned by Jackie Bolger and trained and bred by Jim Bolger, the stallion out of the Danehill mare Speirbhean, who was also home-bred and homeowned and home-trained.
And everybody was there on Irish Derby day 2013. All the Mannings, all the Bolgers. It was just one of those special days.
But Kevin Manning and The Curragh go way back. It was in 1983 that Jim Bolger gave him the leg up on Keynes in The Curragh’s old parade ring before the Morny Wing Apprentices’ Handicap. Still seeking his maiden victory, the young jockey had ridden Keynes in a handicap at Ballinrobe the previous week, missed the kick and kicked himself for one that got away. He made no mistake at The Curragh though, he got away well, got onto the rail and won easily. He didn’t know it at the time obviously but, remarkably, Keynes was the first of over 1,700 winners that he would ride in his career.
There were many more big days at The Curragh. Perfect Imposter in the 1994 Tattersalls Gold Cup, Margarula in the 2002 Irish Oaks, Alexander Goldrun in the Pretty Polly Stakes in 2005 and in 2006, Saoirse Abu in the Phoenix Stakes and in the Moyglare Stud Stakes in 2007, Pleascach in the Irish 1000 Guineas in 2015, and the National Stakes four times: Teofilo in 2006, New Approach in 2007, Dawn Approach in 2012 and Verbal Dexterity in 2017.
And when Kevin Manning won the Irish 1000 Guineas at The Curragh in 2007 on Finsceal Beo, just as when he won the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on Jim Bolger’s filly three weeks earlier, it was his childhood hero Lester Piggott who presented him with his trophy.
Fitting that the two iconic jockeys will be honoured at The Curragh today.

At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs.
It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse.
The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary.
A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

Lester Piggott will today be remembered with an exhibition to commemorate his legacy. The Gladness Stakes will be run in honour of the 16-time Irish classic winning jockey.
Lester enjoyed an excellent time at The Curragh between 1965 and 1981 winning the Irish Derby five times, the last of which came on perhaps the most famous horse of all, Shergar
Today’s feature race is named after Gladness, who Lester rode on many occasions, including to victory in the Ascot Gold Cup, Goodwood Cup and the Ebor at York.
Lester’s most famous relationship came with Vincent O’Brien, with the pair enjoying many years of success at the Curragh. In 1990 when Piggott returned to the saddle, O’Brien was quick to support him and shortly after his return, he went onto ride four winners in one day at The Curragh.
The eleven-time champion jockey rode 31 major winners in Ireland, including three Irish 2000 Guineas and two Irish 1000 Guineas. He would retire with 4,493 winners, making him one of the greatest jockeys to ever ride
Today we remember Lester with an exhibition which has been curated by Nick O’Toole, it will include a variety of memorabilia associated with the champion jockey and will take place on Level One of the grandstand. Among the memorabilia are trophies, racecards, paintings, statues, prints and a whole host of photographs.
You can also visit the Lester Piggott statue located at the entrance to the Aga Khan Grandstand. We look forward to celebrating the life of Lester Piggott today.

A few of these clashed over five furlongs here last month and it would come as no surprise to see DOWNFORCE (fifth) reverse that form with Laugh A Minute (winner) and Swift Flight (third) over this longer trip. The selection is a dual C&D winner under similar conditions and has gone well for Jessica Maye before. Big Gossey also appeals back at this distance having faced a much stiffer test the Irish Lincolnshire 22 days ago.

A new headgear combination seemed to revitalise RUN FORREST RUN over C&D on his reappearance, when his late flourish went narrowly unrewarded. He’s still well treated compared to his old form, despite a 4lb hike, and with testing conditions again in his favour, he may take some stopping. Secret Road, Ecclesiastical and Let’s Believe also have enough in their profile to warrant an interest.
