Featuring The Galileo Irish EBF Futurity Stakes (Group 2) & the Alpha Centauri Debutante Stakes (Group 2) The Curragh SATURDAY 20TH AUGUST GALILEO, immortalised in bronze at Coolmore

We have made some changes to our offering this year which we hope you will enjoy and are always interested in hearing customer feedback. Please try out our Lilywhites Bar and the various facilities in Champions Hall. To watch racing, seating is available for all patrons throughout the final furlong at the front of the stand. In 2022, the Curragh will stage 23 race meetings in total an increase of two over last year and we will have an exciting programme of high-quality flat racing on offer throughout the year. We are very grateful to today’s sponsors the Irish EBF, Coolmore Stud, the Niarchos Family, William Fry & Co, Sheehy Motors Naas, Racing TV and Anthony Kaminskas of AK Bets. Your support, together with that of Horse Racing Ireland, is critical to underpinning prize money levels here at the Curragh.
I would like to extend a warm Curragh welcome to you all here today for the third of our four August Summer Saturday meetings. After two years of Covid restrictions, we are very much enjoying being able to welcome racegoers back to the Curragh this year. I hope that you have a good day.
Two of today’s races are run in memory of the late Neville O’Byrne who served on many industry bodies, including the Board of the Curragh Racecourse, with distinction and we are pleased to welcome Maud, Rachel and many of Neville’s family and friends here today.
I would also like to thank all owners with runners here today we hope your experience at the Curragh is a good one and we thank you for your support. We race at the Curragh again next Saturday with the Pat Smullen Race Day in aid of Cancer Trials Ireland which will become an important annual fund raiser every year for an excellent charity.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 10 11 11

The son of Camelot is a full-brother to the Group 1-winning juvenile Luxembourg and he merits the utmost respect this afternoon. Fleetfoot and Sea Legend are others who bring strong form claims to the table, while Covent Garden and Hippodrome are newcomers who make the shortlist. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority.

ONE of the most unassuming men you would ever meet, Neville O’Byrne’s influence was felt in many aspects of life. He was a man who adopted a style of quiet diplomacy, though it was backed by a steely resolve. Neville was known widely for his integrity, both by members of the legal profession and by the leading figures in racing and breeding. He was passionate when it came to his many interests, including family and friends, work, racing and rugby. In his legal profession Neville was managing partner of William Fry, while he was a well-remembered and highly-respected senior steward of the Turf Club, now the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board. In addition, he was a board member of Horse Racing Ireland and a governor of the Irish European Breeders’ Fund who are remembering him today with a race named in his honour. To all these roles he brought an unassuming nature, wise counsel, good judgement, common sense, fairness, and a dry sense of humour.
27
Working closely with other like-minded people who were keen to establish a world-class weekend of racing in Ireland, Neville played a significant role in the establishment of the Irish Champions Weekend, staged at both Leopardstown and the Curragh.
History was made when Neville handed over the senior steward baton to the first female to hold the position, Meta Osborne. At the time of his death, she said: “Irish racing has lost a true stalwart; he was a real mentor”. The then Horse Racing Ireland chief executive Brian Kavanagh added that he “was a wise counsel to many”. Neville O’Byrne died on Sunday, September 2nd, 2018. He was 73. He was married to Maud for over 45 years, father to Rachel, father-in-law to Daniel and grandfather to Zoe and Harry.
Neville was appointed senior steward of the Turf Club in December 2013, six years after becoming a member, and chaired its compliance and regulations committee. He was noted for his conciliatory approach, always seeking to find common ground and agreement. Other roles included being a director of Curragh Racecourse Ltd and a member of the Leopardstown Racecourse Committee.

As a son of Sadler’s Wells and David Tsui’s Arc heroine Urban Sea, a weight of anticipation had accompanied Galileo from the time he was foaled at Coolmore. On his only start at two he sauntered to a 14-length success at Leopardstown.
By the time Derby Day 2001 dawned, Sadler’s Wells had already been champion sire ten times, but there was one glaring omission from the great stallion’s stud record: Epsom’s blue riband. Galileo rectified that situation in no uncertain fashion, gliding to a 3½-length success over the 2,000 Guineas winner Golan in the second-fastest Derby time ever. This also provided Aidan O’Brien with the first of his record number of Derby winners. A lap of honour for Galileo followed at the Curragh in the Irish Derby prior to a battling display in besting five-year-old Fantastic Light in the King George. Given that Galileo was to become the greatest sire in the modern era, it is remarkable to think that there was only one stakes-winning two-year-old the John Gosden-trained Washington Singer Stakes scorer Innocent Air - in his first crop. However that first crop would go on to include no less than 13 stakes winners. Marguerite Weld’s homebred Nightime opened the Classic floodgates by capturing the 2006 Irish 1000 Guineas while Sixties Icon led home a 1-2-3 for his sire in the St Leger, run that year at York. Back in third that day was Red Rocks, who signed off that year by taking the Breeders’ Cup Turf. It was very fitting that Galileo’s very first winner Heliostatic was bred, owned and trained by Jim Bolger given the overall influence the master Coolcullen handler had on the early stages of Galileo’s career. Bolger was also breeder/owner/trainer of the unbeaten Champion 2-year-old of 2006 Teofilo, breeder of the runaway 2007 Irish Derby winner Soldier Of Fortune, and trainer of Galileo’s first Epsom Derby winner New Approach already a Champion two-year-old.
GALILEO 1998-2021

It soon became apparent that Galileo worked with faster mares more effectively than his sire. Successfully crossing fast mares such as Meow (dam of Churchill and Clemmie), You’resothrilling (dam of Gleneagles, Marvellous, Happily and Joan Of Arc), Margot Did (dam of Magic Attitude) and Laddies Poker Two (dam of Winter) are among the cases in point. and of course for Juddmonte, the decision to send their Listed-winning sprinter Kind reaped the ultimate reward in Frankel. Frankel is one of 20 sons of Galileo to sire Group 1 winners with others including brilliant Derby winner and World Champion Three-Year-Old Australia. As well as excelling as a racehorse, sire and sire of sires, Galileo is an outstanding broodmare sire.
European Champions like St Mark’s Basilica, Sottsass & U S Navy Flag are all out of his daughters, as are Guineas winners Night Of Thunder, Saxon Warrior & Magna Grecia along with Oaks winners Qualify and Snowfall.

“Hewasunique”AidanO’Brien

Back in the 80’s and 90’s if you wanted to find the winner of the race one key trend shone through Christy Roche. He won back to back renewals in 1980 and 1981 with Benefice and Anfield before guiding St Jovite to victory for Jim Bolgger in 1991. Bolger supplied Roche with another winner in 1993 with Cois Na Tine before riding his final winner of the race in 1997 onboard Impressionist for Aidan O’Brien. Impressionist became Aidan’s first winner of the race, and he followed up with a series of impressive training performances in the years to come.
Oratorio and Horatio Nelson won back to back renewals in 2004 and 2005, with Jim Bolger getting in on the action in the following two years with the wins of classy duo Teofilo and New Approach. 2011 and 2012 saw another trainer land back to back renewals, with this time Jessica Harrington the trainer of Pathfork and Dragon Pulse. The O’Brien domination was back with a vengence though in 2013, with Joseph riding War Command and Gleneagles to victory, with the win of Herald The Dawn in 2015 separating two periods of O’Brien dominance. 2016 saw Churchill win on route to being the Champion Two-Year-Old, with Rostropovich following up a year later a first win in the race for Ryan Moore.
36
Giant’s Causeway in 1999 gave Mick Kinane his fourth winner of the race and was onboard Hawk Wing and Van Nistelrooy for their wins in 2001 and 2002 respectively.
The Futurity is one of Ireland’s premier two-year-old colt’s races. It has held Group 2 status for the last 18 years and has been run over its current trip of seven furlongs since 1997. It is Ireland’s premier prep race for the Group 1 National Stakes which takes place over the same course and distance the following month and eleven of the last 20 Futurity winners have gone on to win at least once at Group 1 level including 2020 winner Mac Swiney.
THEGALILEOIRISHEBF FUTURITYSTAKES

The smart-colt subsequently ran into Native Trail in their clash in the Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes here, followed by a below-par effort this season in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.
Subsequent Epsom Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck landed the 2018 race, with Armory making it three in a row for Moore and O’Brien in 2019. 2020 though saw the familiar Bolger colours return to the winners enclosure, with the talented Mac Swiney winning the race in a fine finish under Kevin Manning. He went on to win the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas as a three-year-old, before embarking on a three-year-old campaign at the highest level which saw him contest both Derbies and the Juddmonte International.
The son of Australia was up there with the best juveniles in training last season and put a decent field to the sword, pulling clear of the Joseph O’Brien-trained Maritime Wings for the second race in row.

The impressive Point Lonsdale impressed yet again at a short price to extend his unbeaten record to 4-4 to land this Group 2 contest last year.

HANS ANDERSEN left a lasting impression when opening his account here on Irish Oaks day last month and can go from strength to strength for his powerful connections. He could make into a Classic horse next year so ought to go very close despite this representing a big step up in class. THEALPHACENTAURI DEBUTANTESTAKES
The Debutante is the fillies equivalent of the Futurity Stakes and it has held Group 2 status since 2004. Since its distance was changed from six to seven furlongs 25 years ago it has had spells at Leopardstown and the Curragh and it has been staged at the Curragh every year since 2010. It is the key trial for September’s Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes while eleven of the last 20 winners have gone on to win at Group 1 level. Since the emergence of Ballydoyle as a racing powerhouse, the Debutante is a race they have dominated. Aidan’s first success came in 1994 with Glouthaune Garden, and Aidan has used this race as a key trial for his most promising two-year-old fillies.
The back to back successes of Family Tradition, aptly named, and Photogenic in 1996 and 1997 came under Christy Roche and Seamie Heffernan respectively, and although Aidan had to wait another six years before winning the race again, he did so in style with Necklace under Mick Kinane. He made it three years on the bounce with Silk And Scarlet and Rumplestiltskin in 2004 and 2005 but regained the race in 2009 with Lillie Langtry (dam of Minding and this year’s Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Empress Josephine) and again landed it with a special filly in 2011 with Maybe under son Joseph O’Brien. Joseph followed that success up by riding Tapestry to victory in 2013, Ballydoyle in 2015 before handing the reigns over to brother Donnacha, who did the steering aboard Magical in 2017. Outside of the O’Brien reign isn’t the only story of the Debutante, with many other famed training names saddling winners.
Dermot Weld trained Low Key Affair to victory under Mick Kinane in 1993, with Dance Design following up for the pair two years later. Pat Smullen guided home Saranac Lake to success in 2001 and again won the race in 2007 under Campfire Glow.

Kevin Prendergast trained Skitter Scatter to victory in 2018, with Alpine Star landing the 2019 renewal for the Niarchos Family under Shane Foley. A well-related and smart filly, Alpine Star was imperious in victory, beating a strong field which included the talented Love in 2019.
43
However, Joseph O’Brien has been the one to follow in recent years. Pretty Gorgeous scored in 2020 under Shane Crosse and last year saw Declan McDonogh land the spoils with a excellent front-running ride on Agartha.
Owner Scott Heider has enjoyed vast success in Ireland and Agartha has proved one of his superstars. She repeated her tactics from the Silver Flash Stakes at Leopardstown to score with a bit to spare, emerging as the clear winner in what looked an ultra-competitive contest.
We have witnessed a series of top class fillies land the Debutante recently. Rhododendron, subsequent Fillies’ Mile, Prix de l’Opera and Lockinge winner, won the race under Seamie Heffernan in 2016, with stablemate Magical, subsequent double Tattersalls Gold Cup and Irish Champion Stakes winner, following up a year later.

The Curragh lost a good friend recently with the passing on 16th July of Jim Roberts who worked on the training ground team for many years with responsibility for the gallops on the Maddenstown side of the Curragh. Since retiring from his position, Jim was a regular attendee at the Curragh Races and our sympathies and good wishes go out to Jim’s family and friends.
Luck in running may play a big part in the outcome here with such a big field, but if LOPES GOLD can bounce back to the form of her better placed efforts on her return to maiden company, she could go close for the Harrington yard. So Beautiful is an obvious danger after her Tipperary third but isn’t guaranteed to be at her best over this trip, and Toriangel maybe the one to follow the suggestion home, assuming she is allowed to bowl along on the pace dropping back from a mile.

An open event in which many look set to be suited by a step up in trip but marginal preference is for SMOOTH TOM, who drops back into maiden company. Andrew Slattery’s charge kept on well over an extended mile at the Galway Festival, filling the runner-up berth, and if running to his official rating of 85, he could prove tough to beat. Hibernia Oppositus finished a good second at Dundalk in March and is respected following a break. Touching Clouds and Zabeir are also considered, while Harley Street shouldn’t be underestimated on debut. TOM Hibernia Oppositus

CURRAGH COMMENT ALOYSIUS LILIUS was a very good second over 5f at Down Royal, beaten just a short head. Gerard O’Leary’s six-year-old didn’t have the benefit of a clear run and the handicapper has raised him 3lb, which may prove lenient. Fine Distraction prevailed in that race his first victory after 31 starts and commands respect, while Harry’s Hill is also a last-time-out winner and should be in the mix.
