THE Chester Plate is a valuable consolation race for horses targeted at the Chester Cup, but which don’t make the final field.

When the Plate was staged for the first time in 2018, the Chester Cup joined a select band of historic and popular Flat handicaps to be awarded a consolation race. The others are the Ayr Gold Cup, the Bunbury Cup and Cambridgeshire (both at Newmarket), the Stewards’ Cup (at Goodwood), the Lincoln (at Doncaster) and the Northumberland Plate (at Newcastle).
