PLACE A BET ON-COURSE WITH AND RACECOURSE BOOKMANERS
HOW TO PLACE A BET WITH A RACECOURSE BOOKMAKER WAYS TO BET
WIN ONLY The most common form of bet You win if your horse is first past the post.
Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake)
EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake.
STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS
In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.
• Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win
• 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2
• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2
• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4
• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4
Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval.
In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure.
The AGT also offers a ‘late pay’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings.
Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY.

PLACING A BET
Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow:
1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection.
2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake.
3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly
4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe.
5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed.
Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board. Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible.

This can go the way of course specialist LOOK OUT LOUIS, who won this contest off 14lb lower last year and had a nice pipe-opener in a Listed contest at Lingfield in February. Another previous winner at this meeting, Lihou has been in terrific form of late and must enter calculations, along with talented Irish raider Harry’s Bar Nymphadora may be winless since May 2021, but some of her form from last season gives her a chance.
WIN: LOOK OUT LOUIS
DANGER: LIHOU
VETIVER made quite the impression when scoring readily at Beverley last month and she is drawn to attack from the front once more from stall two. A mark of 90 on her handicap debut could underestimate her and she gets the vote ahead of Greenham third Theoryofeverything and Self Aclaim, who arrives on a hat-trick. We might not have seen the best of Urban Sprawl yet and he is another to note.
WIN: VETIVER
DANGER: THEORYOFEVERYTHING
A taking winner at Cork on his return last month, ALDER could be a Derby prospect for Donnacha O’Brien and he can go a long way to cementing his place by scoring in this valuable contest The son of Australia remains unexposed at this trip and his form is of a higher level than Newmarket debut winner Passenger and San Antonio, who hails from the stable which has won this contest in four of the last five years. The well-related Local Dynasty is another to consider.
WIN: ALDER
DANGER: SAN ANTONIO
Hamish has proven to run well fresh in the past and the gelded son of Motivator was only narrowly denied by MAX VEGA at Newbury when last seen in October. William Haggas’ charge is prominent in the betting for the Yorkshire Cup, but Ralph Beckett’s reopposing six-year-old is taken to confirm the Newbury form. He finished a decent third when giving 3lb to the first and second in the John Porter Stakes last month and that run offers plenty of encouragement. Changingoftheguard won the Chester Vase last year and is also respected.
WIN: MAX VEGA
DANGER: HAMISH
CITY STREAK rates a big player on the pick of his form and Andrew Balding’s fouryear-old must hold every chance of building on a promising third over a similar trip at Chelmsford last month. He filled the runner-up spot over C&D on his third-last outing in July and another bold showing looks assured off 4lb higher. Connections of Thunder Max reach for first-time blinkers following a decent fourth at Haydock most recently and he is noted along with Tudor.
WIN: CITY STREAK
DANGER: THUNDER MAX
HACKMAN showed plenty of ability at Newmarket last month, where he briefly led before fading into third late on. The son of Mehmas ought to improve for that initial experience, though, and could be worth siding with. George Boughey is represented by newcomer Big Time Rascal, who merits the utmost respect along with the Richard Hannon-trained The Camden Colt. Innvincible Friend shaped with promise on his debut at Ripon and is another to consider.
WIN: HACKMAN DANGER: BIG TIME RASCAL
CANTORA has found significant improvement following her switch to handicaps, and the daughter of Time Test, who was hit with an 11lb rise for last month’s Beverley success, may yet have more to offer. Demilion was far from disgraced in a warm 0-95 contest at Newmarket 22 days ago and must be seriously considered, along with Sovereign Spirit, who arrives in search of his hat-trick having notched up a brace of wins at Lingfield.
WIN: CANTORA DANGER: DEMILION

PEACE OF MINeD A Story Of Provenance.
For some years now, Boodles have worked to build a special connection with the unique place that is the Cullinan Mine: source of the largest rough diamond ever discovered: the 3,106 carat Cullinan diamond. It yielded Cullinan I and Cullinan II – the ‘Greater and Lesser Stars of Africa’ – both of which are now among the Crown Jewels.
They featured during Her Majesty The Queen’s Coronation on 2 June 1953, in the Sovereign’s Sceptre and the Imperial State Crown. And like those diamonds, the remarkable stones in this collection come straight from the Cullinan Mine and are thoroughly traceable. Coinciding with The King’s Coronation, this collection represents a true privilege.
1977 Was a Significant Year
First and foremost, The Queen’s Silver Jubilee: 25 years since Her Majesty’s Accession. And for Boodles, their first trip to the Cullinan Mine. While the people of Britain sang ‘God Save The Queen’, Boodles late Chairman, Anthony Wainwright, and his wife Jean donned spotless white boilersuits and travelled hundreds of metres below ground. They were travelling at the invitation of the World Diamond Council.
Anthony Wainwright’s youngest son – Boodles Managing Director, Michael Wainwright, his wife Annie – and their daughter Honour, now Boodles Marketing Manager – visited the Cullinan Mine, in South Africa, to literally follow in Anthony’s footsteps. Many of the rough stones they returned with became the jewellery in this collection.
When you wear a piece from this collection, you’ll be adding your story to one which started more than a
century ago – back in January 1905, when what is still the biggest rough diamond ever discovered was found at the Cullinan Mine in South Africa. At an incredible 3,106 carats, this was the diamond later cut to yield the 530.2 carat ‘Great Star of Africa’, and the 317 carat ‘Lesser Star of Africa’ – both now in the British Crown Jewels, visible in the Sovereign’s Sceptre and Imperial State Crown respectively So as one anniversary year is echoed by another, and we welcome a new monarch, we celebrate
as always
with diamonds.
As a diamond lover, you’ve probably heard of the ‘four C’s’ –cut, colour, clarity and carat. Boodles like to add a fifth: Clive. Clive is our master diamond cutter, and responsible for helping Director of Precious Gemstones, Jody Wainwright, create some of our most beautiful diamonds. It’s Clive’s expert eye – and guiding hand – that guarantees a diamond’s perfect finish.
From Mine, To You
It all begins with a ‘eureka’ moment: a sparkle is spotted amid the rock dust; a flash of fire, shimmering in the dark. The team in South Africa know what Boodles are looking for: high colour, high purity ‘roughs’. A deal is done, and the stone is on its way to Boodles.
The term ‘polishing’ does Clive’s work an injustice; few realise it can take months to polish some Boodles diamonds. It’s not unheard of for him to spend a full day polishing an important diamond’s ‘table’ (the top facet of the diamond) alone. After a quick trip to New York and back for GIA certification, the finished diamond is in London once more, to be placed in its setting. Then finally, it’s over to you. Which is of course where the next chapter – and your own story – begins.

RACE DESCRIPTON
This is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 86 to 105. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

Remembering former Chester Race Company Director
21/10/1954 - 29/04/2023
Richard was an accomplished horseman and actively involved with the racing and breeding industry from an early age. In partnership with his wife Sally, he developed the leading UK based dual purpose thoroughbred breeding stud and sales consignment operation and in doing so created an iconic brand name within the industry
We have been fortunate to have benefitted from the dedication, passion and leadership that Richard provided to Bangor-on-Dee and Chester Race Company over the years. Richard contributed greatly to Chester Race Company, serving on the Bangor-on-Dee Committee since 2007 and as its Chair from 2016 Richard oversaw the introduction of the new multi-award winning Owners & Trainers facility and championed the increase in prize money to over £1 million.
As a Non-Executive Director of Chester Race Company for 9 years Richard provided valuable knowledge and guidance that aided the significant growth and expansion of the Company.
The loss of his presence and personality in our Parade Rings will be felt by us and so many in the racing community but especially by those who had the privilege to work closely with him.

RACE DESCRIPTON
This is a seven furlongs about 127 yards handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 81 to 100. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 100 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 95

TODAY is Dee day. And that’s especially true for the owners, trainers and jockeys of any of the runners in this afternoon’s HomeServe Dee Stakes who still harbour Classic aspirations. With just over three weeks until the Derby and Oaks at Epsom, the time for pretenders to stake a claim is now.
First staged in 1813, the Dee Stakes is the third and final Classic trial to be run during the Boodles May Festival. While the Chester Vase for colts and Cheshire Oaks for fillies, both of which took place here yesterday, have emerged as more influential trials for Epsom in recent times, the Dee Stakes remains a valuable Listed race in its own right, and one steeped in tradition.
The last horse to win the Dee Stakes and the Epsom Derby in the same season is Kris Kin in 2003. Kris Kin finished only 15th on his debut before winning an ordinary Doncaster maiden in two runs in the autumn
DEE STAKES HISTORY
of 2002. Such uninspiring form saw him sent off the unconsidered 20-1 outsider of just four runners for the Dee Stakes. Big Bad Bob had won his final four races as a two-year-old and was a red-hot 4-9 favourite to make it five.
Despite being officially rated 20lb superior to Kris Kin, Big Bad Bob had no answer to the devastating burst of speed jockey Fergal Lynch conjured from Kris Kin inside the furlong.Reigning five-time champion jockey Keiren Fallon was on board Big Bad Bob that day. But as No1 rider to Kris Kin’s trainer Sir Michael Stoute, Irishman Fallon took over for Kris Kin’s victory at Epsom, where he again swooped late to overtake The Great Gatsby, and deny his trainer Aidan O’Brien a third consecutive Derby following wins for Galileo and High Chaparral.
Fallon had earlier steered Oath to the same Dee Stakes-Epsom Derby double in 1999. After winning the
#MayMemories
El Drama
Dee Stakes by five lengths, Oath then provided his trainer Sir Henry Cecil with the last of his four Derby victories at Epsom, and Fallon his first.
Other notable modern-day winners include Pentire (1995) and Sir Harry Lewis (1987). Along with Teenoso, Pentire was arguably the best horse Newmarket trainer Geoff Wragg handled during a 25-year career. Following an undistinguished two-year-old season, Pentire developed into a top-class middledistance performer at three, winning six of his seven races in 1995, including the Group 1 Irish Champion Stakes.
In the other, he lost out by only a neck to that season’s Epsom Derby and subsequent Arc winner Lammtarra in the Group 1 King George and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot –a race Pentire would himself win 12 months later.
Sir Harry Lewis is one of a record 11 Dee Stakes winners to be trained by Barry Hills. After his 1987 victory here, under French-based American rider Cash Asmussen, Sir Harry Lewis went on to land the Irish Derby – a race delayed for 50 minutes by a hoax bomb warning – and, in turn, give Ulster jockey John Reid his only triumph in his home Derby.
In recent years, Aidan O’Brien has extended his May Festival dominance to this race as well. The Irish trainer having scored in six of the last nine renewals of this contest, most recently with Star Of India who kept on well to score here last year.

Star Of India put up a fine performance to win the 2022 running of the Dee Stakes.
Trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden on the day by Ryan Moore, this classy son of Galileo proved the step-up in trip was all that he needed to bounce back from his struggles in the Craven at Newmarket a month prior.
He was a comfortable winner on debut in a maiden at Leopardstown in October 2021, his sole start of that calendar year. Teaming up with Ryan Moore for the first time on his second start, the aforementioned bet365 Craven Stakes at Newmarket, he was fairly well supported in the market, 9/1 second favourite, but this race perhaps proved too much too soon for the young colt and he found himself outpaced in the final furlong as Native Trail breezed to victory.
Aidan O’Brien’s outstanding record in this contest speaks for itself. Having won six of the last nine renewals, it was tough to look past Star Of India here, and the market clearly agreed, with the colt going
LAST YEAR’S DEE STAKES
off as the 6/4 favourite. His main rival appeared to be Mr McCann. Trained by Hugo Palmer and ridden in this contest by James Doyle, he came into this in fine fettle, off the back of his great showing at Epsom in September.
It proved an exciting contest with Mr McCann quickly taking the lead in the early proceedings, closely followed by Star Of India and the Roger Varian trained Dubai Poet. Harrow and Sonny Liston bringing up the rear.
The table looked set for an exciting contest as Tom Marquand kicked his mount Cresta into gear, pushing onto contest the lead with the front runners alongside Sonny Liston. Star Of India’s quality shone through as they entered into the final furlong, keeping on well while his rivals began to weaken, eventually winning by two and a quarter lengths. The real battle was for second, and it was Cresta who came out on top in this one, just finding enough to clutch second from Sonny Liston by a head.

RACE DESCRIPTON
This one mile, two furlongs about 70 yards contest for three-year-old colts and geldings is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set at 9st each before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory or 5lb for a Pattern race success.

ORMONDE, who won all 16 races in his career including the English Triple Crown in 1886, was widely regarded as the greatest horse of the 19th Century. To some, he’s arguably the greatest racehorse to have lived. Either way, his legacy has been celebrated here at Chester since 1936, when the Ormonde Stakes was staged for the first time. Foaled in 1883, Ormonde was a son of the prolific winning racemare Lily Agnes, after whom the opening race of the Boodles May Festival is named. Ormonde won all three races he contested as a two-year-old, including the Criterion and Dewhurst Stakes in the space of only 48 hours.
He won his first Classic, the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, on his first run of his three-year-old campaign; then added a second when he landed the Epsom Derby on his next start. Further wins followed in the St James’s Palace Stakes and the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot, en route to Doncaster, where his victory in the St Leger saw
ORMONDE STAKES HISTORY
Ormonde become only the fourth horse in history to win the Triple Crown of British Classics. Ormonde won the Champion Stakes in 1886, and the Rous Memorial and a second Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot on consecutive days during his final season in 1887. That last-named race proved the most challenging of Ormonde’s career. Although he eventually mastered old adversary Minting in an epic duel, a wind ailment he inherited from his dam Lily Agnes had become so acute it was said his “choking fight for breath could be heard all over the racecourse”.
Ormonde was retired by his owner Hugh Grosvenor, the 1st Duke of Westminster, to stand at his Eaton Hall stud, just south of Chester. Much was anticipated of Ormonde’s second career as stallion, but fertility issues meant he sired only eight foals that would race in Britain. Despite this, one of them, Orme, proved a champion in his own right, winning a string of top races including the Eclipse twice, the Sussex Stakes and the Champion Stakes.
#MayMemories
Fittingly, the Group 3 Ormonde Stakes has been won by numerous top-class horses down the decades. From the esteemed stayer Alycidon (1949) and Tulyar (1952) during its early days, through to Indiana (1965), who was also a Chester Vase winner, and Classic winners Blakeney (1970), Crow (1977) and Teenoso (1984).
Its most celebrated winners of recent times include Daliapour (2000), Harbinger (2010), St Nicholas Abbey (2011) and Brown Panther (2014), who was jointly-owned by former Liverpool, Manchester United and England footballer Michael Owen, and trained locally at Manor House Stables by Tom Dascombe.
There was also a Royal success in 2016 with Dartmouth, owned by Her Majesty The Queen and a record sixth winner in this race for trainer Sir Michael Stoute.
Lester Piggott, Pat Eddery and Ryan Moore are the leading jockeys with five victories apiece, while there have been three dual winners – Sovrango (1962, 1963), Shambo (1993, 1994) and St Expedit (2001, 2002).
Last years renewal of this race saw the William Haggas trained Hamish run out a comfortable winner under Tom Marquand. The gelding had a superb year in 2022 and will be looking to continue where he left off here on his seasonal reappearance.

Hamish showed his class in what proved to be a hot renewal of the Group 2 Ormonde Stakes, the feature race of the Boodles May Festival Ladies Day.
Like most of the feature races at the Boodles May Festival, Aidan
O’Brien has plundered this race in the past, most recently with 2021 winner Japan. The Irish trainer didn’t enter one in 2022 and his loss was Hamish’s gain.
Trained by William Haggas and ridden here by Tom Marquand, the gelding was fairly fancied in the market (albeit not as much as heavily backed 10/11 favourite Albaflora) but there were some concerns on form. After clutching
the Group 3 September Stakes at Kempton in September, he looked a tad out of his depth when fourth behind Trueshan in the British Champions Long Distance Cup and the less said about his follow-up run at Kempton the better. The quality was undoubtedly there and his 185-day break in the lead up to this contest appeared to pay dividends.
His main rival was clearly Albaflora. Trained by Ralph Beckett, she was coming off two very impressive
#MayMemories
seconds in the Darley Yorkshire Oaks and the British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes at York and Ascot respectively and was tipped by many to go one better again here.
It was an enthralling race from start to finish, with the Johnston’s gelding Thunderous taking the lead early, closely followed by Albaflora. As they entered the final furlong, Hamish just seemed to find another gear that the others just could not match. He edged left and took the lead, breezing to a victory that was a lot more comfortable than the winning distance of three quarters of a length would suggest.
LAST YEAR’S ORMONDE STAKES
Albaflora looked to be clinging on for second but really began to weaken inside the final furlong and could only manage fifth with Thunderous coming in second after rallying late on. Alounak rounded out the podium positions.
Hamish continued his run of form over to Ireland where he was runner-up in the Irish St. Leger behind Kyprios before taking the Cumberland Lodge Stakes at Ascot in October, followed by a further second in the Group 3 St Simon Stakes at Newbury a few weeks later. He lines up in this race again this year, this time as the undisputed favourite, can he do it again?

RACE DESCRIPTON
This one mile, five furlongs about 84 yards race for four-year-olds and upwards is a Group 3 contest – a race which can only bettered by a Group 1 or 2. Many of the runners will have already posted form well above average and some may use this as a stepping-stone to even greater things. Initially, the weights are allocated on the basis of age and sex before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to lining up here – 3lb to Group 3 winners, 5lb for a Group 2 or 7lb to those successful in a Group 1.

RACE DESCRIPTON
This is a one mile, two furlongs about 70 yards handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 71 to 90. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty, which is based on the age of the horse in this race.

RACE DESCRIPTON
This race is a five furlongs maiden stakes for two-year-olds, which are E.B.F. eligible. Maiden races provide a starting point for young horses that are yet to record a victory and most will be very lightly-raced or be making their racecourse debuts. Previous experience can count for a lot when searching for the winner but well-bred or precocious juveniles are more than capable of landing the prize at the first time of asking.

RACE DESCRIPTON
This is a one mile, four furlongs about 63 yards handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 66 to 85 Like most handicaps on the Flat this race is also open to horses that are rated below that particular band. However, all handicaps stipulate a minimum weight and no runner can carry less than that, irrespective of how low their rating is. This is often described as ‘running from out of the handicap’ and is considered a disadvantage.

PLAY SMARTER
The vote goes to the filly CANTORA, who had any amount in hand when scoring at Beverley and she is appealing with Ryan Moore doing the steering here, for all that an 11lb rise in the weights asks a question. The hat-trick seeking Sovereign Spirit will be a danger to all provided he is able to continue the good work back on turf, while Demilion and Nobody Told Me are others to consider, along with likely improver Burglar’s Dream.
