ST.PATRICK’S THURSDAY

Hello and a resounding welcome back to Cheltenham Racecourse for St. Patrick’s Thursday of the Cheltenham Festival. Today, the Irish cheer flows through the air as we embark on a day filled with spirited racing and camaraderie.
As we bask in the Irish spirit, we’re delighted to have you join us for another day of exhilarating action, where the emerald isle’s charm meets the thrill of the races. Today, the spotlight shines on the Ryanair Chase, where Envoi Allen aims to retain his crown, and the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle, promising an open battle with Sire Du Berlais vying for an astonishing fourth victory at the Cheltenham Festival.
Before the racing kicks off, immerse yourself in the Irish buzz at the parade ring for the Preview Show at 12.15. Our esteemed hosts, Martin Kelly, Aly Vance, and Hayley Moore, will guide you through the day’s card, sharing insights and excitement. The festivities kick off with a performance from an Irish dance group, Celtic Feet at 12.55, officially opening St Patrick’s Thursday
A special thank you to our sponsors for their contribution to the day. Today’s gratitude goes to Ryanair, Paddy Power, Turners, Pertemps Network, TrustATrader and JRL Group.
While you’re not captivated by the races, visit The Guinness Village or Best Mate Pavilion, where the atmosphere is alive with Irish tunes. We’re proud to offer the Orchard exclusive to the Club Enclosure ticket holders, Hospitality guests, Owners and Trainers, and all Cheltenham Annual Members. This year, we’re delighted to welcome new brands like Gaucho, Aston Martin, Quintessentially, and House of Clarity to The Orchard.
Throughout the week we are celebrating the Centenary of the Cheltenham Gold Cup. A key part of these celebrations has been the creation of the Gold Cup 100 Community fund Cheltenham Racecourse has worked with multiple artists to raise money for the fund. Please visit the Shopping Village over the four days of the Festival to view the artworks. All items can be viewed on the on-line auction page: jumblebee.co.uk/goldcup100communityfund
Following a successful launch last year, The ‘Love Our Turf’ campaign has returned for another year. The initiative seeks to reinforce and strengthen the relationship between the community and the racecourse. You will find wayfinding ushers, street entertainment, enhanced cleaning and an increased number of toilets along the way.
We hope for another day of excitement and anticipation, and let the Cheltenham Festival magic continue. May your day be filled with Irish cheer, thrilling races, and unforgettable moments on St Patrick’s Thursday

Choose your bet. ‘To win’ or ‘each-way’ are popular types of bet.
‘To win’ is for your horse to come first. ‘Each-way’ is for your horse to come first or to be placed. It’s two bets, so ‘£2 each-way’ = £4 total bet.
Decide the amount –or stake – you are comfortable to bet.
Place your bet. There are different places to bet on course; The Tote, racecourse bookmakers, betting shop or online. Each option offers a different experience.

RACE DESCRIPTION
The Turners Novices’ Chase, first run in 2011, is a two and a half mile Grade 1 contest for novices. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race prior to the official start of the season, usually towards the end of April. In theory, this allows the inexperienced horses to race against each other before graduating to senior ranks. Grade 1 contests are the highest level of National Hunt racing so some classy horses are lining up. In terms of weight, the whole field carries 11st 7lb, except Jamaico who carries 11st 5lb as the only five-year-old in the field.
12 of the 13 winners were aged 6 or 7
9 of the 13 winners were trained in Ireland
12 of the 13 winners had run 9 times or less over hurdles
Stage Star was given a positive ride by Harry Cobden, setting out to make the running from flag fall Those in behind were happy to watch Stage Star, who didn’t put a foot wrong the whole way round. Rolling down the hill he was given a breather by Cobden, with Notlongtillmay laying it down to him as they turned for home. Favourite Mighty Potter couldn’t pick up to tackle Stage Star, who winged the last before bounding up the hill to victory.
Run over two miles, three furlongs & 168 yards. 17 fences to be jumped

Held up in near last, the pair were happy to watch the race play out in front of them, in what can often prove a chaotic affair They began to sneak into contention before jumping the second last but still had plenty to do as they came down to the last. The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bred fillies and mares.
The Jockey Club South West Frequent Runner Scheme is aimed at rewarding trainers who run horses regularly at Jockey Club Racecourses in the South West Region - Cheltenham, Exeter, Warwick, and Wincanton.
There are two categories of a frequent runner. Trainers with 40 or more horses and Trainers with 40 or fewer horses in training.
The Championship for the 2023/2024 season will start at Warwick on 25 September and will conclude at Warwick on the 30 May 2024.
All qualifying races are allocated a star rating (* to *****) with trainers awarded full points (star rating) for their first runner and half points for additional runners in the same race. These are based on the average numbers of runners a race has attracted over the previous two or three years as follows:
1
stars – less than 8
The star ratings for each qualifying race are marked with the race conditions.
RACE DESCRIPTION The Grade 1 Ryanair Steeple Chase is a race for five-year-olds and upwards which are rated in excess of 130 and is run over the intermediate trip of two miles, four and a half furlongs. It therefore suits horses that perhaps find the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase on the sharp side and those that find the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup trip a step too far at this stage in their careers. Always a competitive race at The Festival.
The past 10 winners were French-bred
14 of the past 15 winners were aged 7-9
12 of the past 16 winners had already won a Grade 1
Chacun Pour Soi was sent out at a decent gallop by Danny Mullins with eventual winner Envoi Allen a little keen under Rachael Blackmore in fourth The well backed Shishkin wasn’t overly fluent at some of his fences and did jump to his left throughout At the third from home he made a terrible error that would ultimately cost him in the finish. Envoi Allen travelled powerfully to the front and with his rivals held in behind him, he coasted to his third Festival win.
Run over two miles, four furlongs & 127 yards. 17 fences to be jumped
Total prize fund of £388,125 £218,397 to the winner
Trainers and Jockeys with some of the strongest records in the race over the last 10 years

The Ryanair Steeple Chase, or the Festival Trophy Steeple Chase to give it its registered name, was introduced in 2005 when a fourth day was added to The Festival. Some think that it is the reincarnation of the Cathcart Challenge Cup but that isn’t strictly true as that race was restricted to first and second-season chasers. Run over a distance of two miles, four and a half furlongs, the race was initially granted Grade 2 status and was sponsored by the Daily Telegraph.
Thisthatandtother had proven his liking for Cheltenham by finishing runner-up in that season’s BetVictor Gold Cup, December Gold Cup and re-scheduled Victor Chandler Chase. Memories of his fall when sent off favourite for the previous season’s Arkle were soon forgotten as the Paul Nicholls-trained gelding won out in a gripping battle with Fondmort in the hands of Ruby Walsh.
Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh became the first trainer and jockey to win the Ryanair twice when Taranis, the youngest winner of the race, beat the unfortunate Our Vic in a gripping dive for the line. A neck was the official verdict – the shortest winning distance in the race’s history. The David Pipe-trained Our Vic had been pulled-up in the inaugural race and finished 9th behind Fondmort before his narrow defeat in 2007 but twelve months later, the year the race achieved Grade 1 status, he gained compensation with a five length victory in the hands of Timmy Murphy.
In 2009 Imperial Commander gave us all a glimpse of what was to come when staying on gamely in the hands of Paddy Brennan to beat the 2006 Arkle and 2007 Champion Chase winner Voy Por Ustedes. Twelve months later, the Nigel TwistonDavies-trained Imperial Commander returned to Cheltenham to land the Gold Cup; beating Denman by seven lengths
Jonjo O’Neill’s Albertas Run proved the biggest priced winner of the Ryanair when dispelling his starting price of 14-1 to win under A. P. McCoy in 2010. He was sent off at 6-1 for the following season’s renewal but the result was the same. Under a typical McCoy drive Albertas Run became the first horse to win the race twice In fact, he went very close to a hat-trick of victories but at the age of eleven he was unable to handle the finishing kick of his younger rival Riverside Theatre. The Nicky Henderson-trained winner was a well supported 7-2 favourite and he became the first outright winning favourite of the race, thanks in part to jockey Barry Geraghty.
The 2013 renewal saw the widest margin winner of the Ryanair when Cue Card routed his rivals by nine lengths. After running well in defeat in the 2011 Supreme and 2012 Arkle, the 2010 Champion Bumper winner got back to winning ways for father and son team Colin and Joe Tizzard.
Dynaste gave his trainer David Pipe a second victory in the race in 2014 with a two-and-a-quarterlength success, some six years after Our Vic landed the spoils for the Pond House team. Uxizandre gave jockey AP McCoy the perfect Festival send off as he produced a fine front-running display to win the race four years ago.
Willie Mullins landed back-to-back Ryanair Chases in 2016 and 2017 courtesy of Vautour and Un De Sceaux. However, the master of Closutton was denied a hat-trick twelve months later as Henry De Bromhead’s Balko des Flos beat Un de Sceaux by four and a half lengths, but it wasn’t long for Mullins to wait to regain the crown as Min put in an exhibition of jumping to win the 2020 renewal of the race.
The 2019 renewal saw a brave performance from Paul Nicholls’ Frodon, who battled back bravely up the hill under Bryony Frost to defeat Aso, third in 2018, by just over a length to begin what came to be known as ‘The Golden Hour’. The pair returned to jubilant scenes in the winners’ enclosure with a first Grade 1 triumph for a horse that is very popular with the racing public
In 2021 we saw the emergence of a new superstar, Allaho. Willie Mullins’ seven-year-old proved to be one of the more popular bets of the week after a significant market support just before the off He returned last year to defend his crown and once more we were treated to another jumping exhibition, as he romped home by 14-lengths. In his absence, Envoi Allen has taken up the mantle for Cheveley Park and this year bids to follow in Allaho’s footsteps by becoming a dual winner of the race

Although STAGE STAR bombed out in a C&D handicap last time his overall Cheltenham record, which includes a win in last year’s Golden Miller, provides hope that he can bounce back to form with a bang. RACE DESCRIPTION The ultimate stamina test for hurdlers, the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle Race is run over three miles. Recent famous winners on the illustrious Roll of Honour include Baracouda, Inglis Drever, multiple winner Big Buck’s and more recently Thistlecrack, Nichols Canyon, Penhill, Paisley Park and Flooring Porter. As is often the case in a Grade 1 hurdle, all horses carry the same weight, in this case 11st 10lb.
12 of the past 17 winners were rated 160+
20 of the past 24 winners finished 1st or 2nd last time out
7 of the past 10 winners were secondseason hurdlers
Despite being 11, there would be no stopping Sire Du Berlais and Mark Walsh in what was an action packed finish of the 2023 Stayers Hurdle. As the rain came crashing down on Thursdays feature race, it became a stamina sapping battle between Dashel Drasher, Teahupoo, Flooring Porter and Sire Du Berlais. Dashel Drasher looked as though he might hold on from the front but the veteran Sire Du Berlais would not be denied another Festival win for Gordon Elliott.
Run over two miles, seven furlongs & 213 yards. 12 hurdles to be jumped

The Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle is the most prestigious long-distance hurdle race in the calendar. It was introduced to The Festival in 1972 when it replaced the Spa Hurdle and was initially known as the Lloyds Bank Stayers’ Hurdle. Originally held on Tuesday or Wednesday until it was switched to the Thursday in 1993, the inaugural race was won by Parlour Moor, trained by Harry Thomson Jones and ridden by Macer Gifford.
Tommy Carberry steered Brown Lad to victory in 1975 for trainer Jim Dreaper before becoming the first jockey to win the race twice when partnering the Peter Easterby-trained Town Ship to victory in 1977. In 1982 Crimson Embers gave Fulke Walwyn his first of three Stayers’ Hurdle successes when partnered by Stuart Shilston and the trio combined again four years later when Crimson Embers became the first horse to regain the title and at eleven, the oldest winner of the race.
Galmoy became the first horse to win back-to-back renewals in 1987 and 1988 for trainer John Mulhern and jockey Tommy Carmody. The Barry Hills-trained Nomadic Way was equally at home racing on the level or over hurdles and in 1992 won the Stayers’ Hurdle with those famous Sangster colours carried by Jamie Osborne. Martin Pipe recorded the first of two Stayers’ Hurdle successes in 1994 when Balasani held off all challengers under Mark Perrett and two years later Cyborgo followed suit when ridden by David Bridgwater.
Multiple winners were aplenty in the 2000s. The French raider Baracouda set the trend when winning in the famous silks of J. P. McManus in 2002 and 2003 for Francois and Thierry Doumen 2005 proved a landmark year for more than one reason. The title of the race was changed to the World Hurdle when Ladbrokes took over the sponsorship and it also saw the emergence of one of the best-known names associated with the race.
The Howard Johnson-trained Inglis Drever dominated the race during the mid-part of the decade winning three times in 2005, 2007 and 2008 Graham Lee did the steering for his first success whilst Paddy Brennan took over for his second success and Denis O’Regan for the third, meaning that Inglis Drever is the only multiple winner in the race’s history to be ridden by three different jockeys.
Prior to 2009 Paul Nicholls had been out of luck in the Stayers’ Hurdle and Big Buck’s hadn’t looked anything out of the ordinary in his native France, winning twice from 13 starts, but in the hands of Nicholls he blossomed into the best hurdler of his generation and arguably the best we have ever seen.
The 2009 Festival provided the springboard to a career that saw him win back-to-back Stayers’ Hurdles from 2009 to 2012 under the tutorage of Ruby Walsh In fact, from January 2009 to December 2012 the stylish hurdler went a total of 18 races unbeaten. In four short years, Big Buck’s, Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh became the most successful horse, trainer and jockey in the race’s history
Injury prevented the superstar defending his title in 2013 when the Charles Byrnes-trained Solwhit took full advantage under Paul Carberry – 36 years after his father had won with Town Ship
With Sun Bets taking over the sponsorship in 2017 and changing the race title back to the Stayers’ Hurdle, the final World Hurdle saw Colin Tizzard’s brilliant hurdler Thistlecrack land the spoils, stretching clear up the famous Cheltenham hill to win by seven lengths at the line.
The inaugural Sun Bets Stayers’ Hurdle saw trainer Willie Mullins gain a first success in the 3m prize with Nichols Canyon and Mullins was back in the Winner’s Enclosure twelve months later with Penhill. Paisley Park’s dominance of the stayers’ hurdling arena began in 2019 and he duly landed the Grade 1 prize here at The Festival. In 2020, Paddy Power took over their sponsorship, with Lisnagar Oscar springing a surprise in their inaugural year Previous winners have a great record in the race and with last year’s winner Sire Du Berlais being joined by Paisley Park and Flooring Porter, we could well see another add their name once more to the roll of honour.

The veterans came out on top in last season’s renewal, but TEAHUPOO was a close third when only a 6-y-o and has improved again this year judging by the manner of his win in the Hatton’s Grace Hurdle at Fairyhouse on his return in December, so looks the one to beat Fellow 7-y-o Crambo appeals as the main threat given the rate of his progress, though top-class chaser Noble Yeats won the Cleeve Hurdle on only his third start in this sphere so is a fascinating contender

RACE DESCRIPTION
The Trustatrader Plate is a Premier Handicap Steeple Chase run over two miles, four and a half furlongs. Handicaps exist as an attempt to level the playing field for horses of varying quality, thereby ensuring more competitive racing for connections and punters alike All horses possess an official BHA rating that reflects their relative abilities. Put simply, the higher the rating, the bigger the weight carried - see how 152 rated James du Berlais carries 6lb more than the 146 rated Embittered.
The past 5 winners had won at Cheltenham earlier that season
The past 10 winners were rated in the 140s
4 of the past 6 winners were sent off at 5-1 or shorter
2022 winner Coole Cody only knew one way to race and went from the front once more to try and defend his crown. Seddon followed him in second, with Ben Harvey keen to keep close tabs on the leader. Those in the rear of the field struggled to land a blow on those in the front and more than likely weren’t benefited by testing conditions Fugitif emerged as the biggest threat but despite a good leap at the last, they couldn’t run down the game Seddon

PLAY SMARTER
A useful, dual winner over hurdles, THEATRE MAN has yet to taste success over fences, but he won’t be long in bucking that trend judged on his fine second in the Timeform Novices’ Handicap (very strong form) over C&D in January, and with the prospect of more to come, he can prove a 3lb rise lenient and prevail. Recent Exeter-scorer Crebilly is another of significant interest provided his jumping holds up back in handicaps, with Saint Felicien and In Excelsis Deo other improvers to note.
The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bred fillies and mares.
Novice races tend to be for younger horses that are still learning their way over hurdles or fences and allow them to race against each other before graduating up the ranks. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race, under the respective code, prior to the official start of the season. This race has also been allocated Grade 2 status which makes it a high-class contest and only bettered by a Grade 1, so expect to see some top-notch contenders lining up. Initially all runners are allocated 11st 2lb (4yo 10st 6lb) before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to taking part here - see how Jade De Grugy carries 5lb extra for her Grade Three success at Fairyhouse.
In a day of excellent front running rides, it was no surprise to see our penultimate race to go to the horse on the front end Gavin Sheehan got himself into an uncontested lead from flag fall and would go onto stay there all the way to the finish line. Luccia had been on the front end for much of the contest but looked to lack the turn of foot to challenge the leader. From the back of the field Magical Zoe and Halka Du Tabert stayed on strongly but had ultimately left themselves too much to do

BRIGHTERDAYSAHEAD has looked a class act on each visit to the racecourse, again barely asked a question when easing to success in a listed event at Navan a month ago, so she’s marginally preferred to Jade de Grugy, another bright prospect representing a top Irish yard Dysart Enos was highly impressive at Doncaster last time and looks the clear pick of the British contingent.

RACE DESCRIPTION The Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Handicap Steeple Chase (Sponsored by the JRL Group) is another handicap, this time for horses which possess an official rating from 0 to 145 and will be run over three miles and two furlongs. Unlike the rest of the handicaps on today’s card, this one is limited to amateur jockeys however the weight allocation remains the same as our previous handicaps. The higher a horse’s official BHA rating, the bigger the weight they have to carry - see how the 145 rated Inothewayurthinkin, carries 1lb more than Annual Invictus, who is rated 144.
The past 5 winners were novices
9 of the past 14 winners returned at single figures
10 of the past 12 winners were rated between 137-143
Angels Dawn made amends for an untimely unseat in the Grand National Trial at Punchestown, when looking to be going well She sat in behind the leading pack, with the early pace looking to be a frantic one. She was kept wide coming down the hill and looked to have plenty left in the tank as they turned for home The last fence saw her put in another excellent jump and despite a nail biting finish up the run in, she held on under Patrick King
Run over three miles & two furlongs 21 fences to be jumped

Angels Dawn was a smooth winner of this a year ago and a bold repeat bid is on the cards, even from 11lb higher Irish raiders look set to dominate, with Where It All Began completing the shortlist.

The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst you are at Cheltenham Racecourse. The emergency exits from the bars onto the grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would request that you do not stop whilst in this area. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse We would also like to remind racegoers that the first aid room is located above the parade ring behind the See You Then Bar.
Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are subject to alteration. The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing.
All racehorses trained in Britain are stabled at the premises licensed by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). The standards demanded by BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation.
Similarly, BHA licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials and Cheltenham Racecourse staff work in conjunction to ensure that the highest standards are met. In addition Cheltenham Racecourse employs eight veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse
In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate attention and treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey.
If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the most appropriate equine hospital or Accident & Emergency Hospital.
