Hello and welcome back to Cheltenham Racecourse for Style Wednesday. As we dive into the heart of the sports premier racing, we’re thrilled to have you join us for another day of exhilarating action.
In 2024, as we celebrate the centenary of the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Style Wednesday presents a unique fusion of elegance and modern spectacle that pays homage to The Festival’s rich fashion heritage Today the style is as timeless as the races are thrilling, and the glamour matches glory.
The highlight of today is the much-anticipated Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase, featuring the rematch between El Fabiolo and Jonbon. Another chapter is set to take place in the rivalry, set to unfold at 3.30 pm, promising a showdown that will keep you on the edge of your seat. We’re looking forward to this thrilling encounter as these two stellar horses battle for supremacy on the track.
Before the racing kicks off, be sure to catch the buzz at the parade ring for the Preview Show at 12.25. Martin Kelly, Aly Vance, and Hayley Moore will guide you through the day’s card, sharing insights and excitement. The day’s festivities commence with a show-stopping performance from Laura Wright, singing Unstoppable at 12.55, officially opening Style Wednesday.
In addition to the racing action, today marks the celebration of slow fashion with the Slow Fashion Awards. A celebration of sustainable fashion initiatives within the racing community. Join presenter Rosie Tapner and immerse yourself in the elegance and style of the day, as we appreciate those who contribute to the world of fashion with sustainability in mind. Head to the Style Pod in The Plaza to enter for a chance to win some unrivalled prizes.
A special thank you to our sponsors for their contribution to the day. Today’s thanks go to Betway, Gallagher, Brown Advisory, Coral, Glenfarclas and Weatherbys.

RACE DESCRIPTION
The Grade 1 Gallagher Novices’ Hurdle is run over two miles and five furlongs and is contested by some of the highest-class novice hurdlers this year. Horses are classed as a novice if they have yet to win a race prior to the official start of the season, usually towards the end of April. In theory, this allows the inexperienced horses to race against each other before graduating to the senior ranks. All of today’s runners will carry 11st 7lb.
23 of the past 29 winners won last time out
6 of the past 16 winners were trained by Willie Mullins
The past 14 winners had one at least one bumper
Impaire Et Passe was given a peach of a ride to win last year’s opener On paper it looked a competitive renewal but Paul Townend blew them away in the double green of Simon Munir & Isaac Souede Champ Kiely had taken them along at an honest gallop and turning for home there looked to be a good number in with a chance. Paul Townend opted to take the shortest route, kicking clear to win impressively by 6 1/2 lengths.

Willie Mullins has an exceptional bunch of novice hurdlers once again and he is the highest-rated of the lot going into the Festival on the back of a stunning victory in a Leopardstown Grade 1 won by some of the stable stars over the years He promises to do even better over this sort of trip and can land the odds Ile Atlantique can complete a 1-2 for the yard, ahead of Ben Pauling’s unbeaten Handstands

RACE DESCRIPTION
The Grade 1 Brown Advisory Novices’ Steeple Chase is run over three miles and half a furlong and features this season’s leading novice staying chasers. Many horses in the past have used this race as a stepping-stone to future Gold Cup glory - including recent winners Denman, Bobs Worth and Lord Windermere. As is usual in a Grade 1 chase, all horses carry the same weight, in this case 11st 7lb.

Sam Twiston-Davies made his intentions clear from flag fall as he set out to make all on The Real Whacker He got the Patrick Neville trained gelding into an excellent rhythm on the front end, gaining lengths from the field at most fences Coming down the hill he was given a bit of a breather by Sam before kicking on turning the bend Bronn looked to be travelling well but his effort faded coming up the hill. Gerri Colombe on the other hand stayed on resolutely but was unable to reel in the leader before the line.

The Grade 1 Brown Advisory Novices’ Steeple Chase is always a hotly contested race with Europe’s top novice staying chasers looking to make a name for themselves over the larger obstacles.
The three miles and half a furlong race was introduced to The Festival in 1946 under the title of the Broadway Novices’ Chase and that inaugural running was won by Birthlaw who was trained by Tommy Rayson and ridden by Ted Vinall. At 11-years-old he remains the oldest winner of the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase. In 1957, Fulke Walwyn became the race’s leading trainer when Mandarin, ridden by Michael Scudamore, gave him his fourth success in the race - adding to the victories of Mountain Prince (1948), On View (1951) and Glenbeigh (1954).
Some legendary names of the National Hunt scene have won the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase but perhaps the biggest of them all was Tom Dreaper’s Arkle who won the 1963 renewal before landing a hat-trick of Gold Cups in 1964, 1965 and 1966. Arkle’s rider Pat Taaffe was winning the race for the fourth time following victories on Coneyburrow (1953), Solfen (1960) and Grallagh Cnoc (1961) and when he partnered Proud Tarquin to victory in 1970 he became the leading rider in the race’s history
The Dan Moore-trained Tied Cottage proved a convincing winner under jockey Tommy Carberry in 1976 and four years later went on to land the Gold Cup before being subsequently disqualified having testing positive for a banned substance. 1977 was the Dickinson’s year when Gay Spartan won the race for trainer Tony and jockey Michael.
Several winners have subsequently achieved victory in the Cheltenham Gold Cup but Jenny Pitman’s Garrison Savannah did it in subsequent years winning the race in 1990 and the Gold Cup in 1991 when he beat two former champions in Desert Orchid and Norton’s Coin He almost went into the record books the following month when he went so close to winning the Grand National only giving best to Seagram.
In 1992, Miinnehoma was a winning favourite of the race and two years later the Martin Pipe-trained runner went on to win the 1994 Grand National, confirming that the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase really does unearth some future superstars.
1999 saw victory for the Noel Chance-trained Looks Like Trouble who later went on to win the 2000 Gold Cup Paul Nicholls’ Denman was an emphatic ten length winner of the 2007 Brown Advisory Chase before following up in breathtaking style in the following season’s Gold Cup, a feat repeated by Nicky Henderson’s 2012 winner Bobs Worth, as well as the Jim Cullotytrained Lord Windermere twelve months later. Nicholls was back in the winners’ enclosure in 2019 when Topofthegame took a thrilling renewal of the race from Henderson’s Santini. Willie Mullins won the first of four Brown Advisory Novices’ Chases when Florida Pearl galloped to success under Richard Dunwoody in 1998 before Rule Supreme and Cooldine followed suit in 2004 and 2009. Don Poli’s victory in 2015 saw Mullins join Fulke Walwyn as the race’s leading trainer.
The Peter Beaumont-trained Hussard Collonges became the joint longest priced winner of the race when landing odds of 33-1 in 2002 – the same price as the 1983 winner Canny Danny Another record was toppled in 2006 when the Paul Nicholls-trained Star De Mohaison became the first, and only, five-year-old winner.
Nigel Twiston-Davies ended a 23 year wait for a second winner of the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase when Blaklion triumphed under Ryan Hatch in 2016. The 2020 winner was from familiar sources - Champ flew home late on for Nicky Henderson and owner JP McManus in one of the finishes of The Festival. Monkfish took the race back to Ireland with a fine performance in 2021 before L’Homme Presse wrestled it back under Charlie Deutsch for Venetia Williams The race stayed in Britain, as Patrick Neville got his first winner with The Real Whacker.

Grand National Festival stival
RACE DESCRIPTION The Coral Cup Premier Handicap Hurdle is the first handicap of the afternoon and is a fiercely competitive event – both on the track and in the betting ring! Handicaps exist as an attempt to level the playing field for horses of varying quality, thereby ensuring more competitive racing. All horses possess an official BHA rating that reflects their relative abilities. The higher the rating, the more weight the horse has to carry - see how Ballyadam rated 147, carries 2lb more than the 145-rated Maxxum.
12 of the past
winners were aged 7 or younger
10 of the past
winners were French-bred
18 of the past 23 winners had run 9 times or less over hurdles
Langer Dan was due his share of luck at the Festival after bumping into Gold Cup winner Galopin Des Champs in 2021 and then being bought down in 2022 Last year he was held up in midfield for much of the contest, weaving his way through the field to mount a challenge. Coming down to the last he still had a lot to do to catch Camprond but he would not be denied a Festival success and powered up the hill to win.
Run over two miles, five furlongs 10 hurdles to be jumped

PLAY SMARTER
A typically large field for this feature handicap with several unexposed sorts lining up and it’s DODDIETHEGREAT who gets the nod having been shaping up extremely well considering the length of his pre-season absence this term. Stepping back up in trip, he can provide Nicky Henderson with a fifth Coral Cup success at the expense of Langer Dan, who won this last year and is back down to the same mark. Sa Majeste, Lucky Place and Built By Ballymore are just a handful of others to consider, too.

RACE DESCRIPTION The feature race of the day is the Grade 1 Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase, the championship event for two mile chasers Some of the leading chasers from Britain and Ireland will be tackling Cheltenham’s unique undulations at breathtaking speed and there will be no hiding places as the cream usually rises to the top. All today’s runners carry 11st 10lb in the absence of any mares.
14 of the past 23 winners had won at the Festival previously
14 of the past 22 winners won last time out
29 of the past 37 winners were aged 7-9
Editeur Du Gite exhibited his usual front running tactics to take last year’s Queen Mother Champion Chase field along at honest pace. 2022 champion Energumene kept close order with the leader, jumping upsides on a number of occasions. Edwardstone never looked settled under Tom Cannon and was unable to land any sort of blow. Captain Guinness presented the biggest danger but Paul Townend never looked in any danger and cruised home on the bridle.
Run over one mile, seven furlongs & 199 yards. 13 fences to be jumped

Whilst Friday’s Gold Cup is all about stamina, this afternoon’s Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase focuses on speed, with Europe’s top two-mile chasers hoping to add their name to an illustrious Roll of Honour.
The Dan Moore-trained Quita Que won the inaugural National Hunt Two-Mile Champion Chase in 1959 under Bunny Cox before Tom Dreaper, the leading trainer in the race, and Pat Taaffe teamed up with Fortria to become the first multiple winner of the race in 1960 and 1961. Ever since then there have been many multiple winners of this two mile chase; Drinny’s Double achieving the same feat for trainer Bob Turnell and jockey Frank Nash in 1967 and 1968.
Fred Winter trained his one and only Champion Chase winner in 1971 when Paul Kelleway partnered Crisp to victory, who two years later suffered an agonising defeat by Red Rum in the 1973 Grand National.
The Edward Courage-trained Royal Relief became the first horse in the race’s history to regain his title after winning under Bill Smith in 1972 and 1974. Skymas recorded back-to-back wins for trainer Brian Lusk and jockey Mouse Morris in 1976 and 1977 and became the oldest winner, at twelve, on the second of those occasions. The Peter McCreery-trained Hilly Way picked up the baton immediately afterwards winning under Tommy Carmody in 1978 and Ted Walsh in 1979.
The Queen Mother, whose Game Spirit finished runner-up in the race in 1976, had been an unwavering supporter of National Hunt racing and in 1980 the race was renamed the Queen Mother Champion Chase in celebration of her 80th birthday. Up until her death she was always on hand to give out the trophy each season.
The Robert Earnshaw-ridden Badsworth Boy dominated the race in the early 1980s, winning for three years in succession between 1983 and 1985 for the Dickinson family and he remains the most successful horse in the history of the race. At the end of the 1980s there were two more back-to-back winners of the race Pearlyman tasted glory for John Edwards in 1987 and 1988 and the David Elsworth-trained Barnbrook Again followed suit in 1989 and 1990.
David Nicholson broke his duck in 1994 when Viking Flagship galloped to victory under Adrian Maguire and he didn’t have to wait long for his second when the same horse followed up 12 months later in the hands of Charlie Swan.
The Jessica Harrington-trained Moscow Flyer stamped his authority on the race in 2003 before disappointing punters 12 months later when unseating Barry Geraghty. He returned in 2005 and duly made amends, becoming the joint-second oldest winner of the race
In more recent seasons Barry Geraghty has been a leading force. In 2010, he partnered the Colm Murphy-trained Big Zeb to something of a surprise success before teaming up with Nicky Henderson in 2012 and 2013 with Finian’s Rainbow and Sprinter Sacre respectively That took his tally to five making him joint-leading jockey with Pat Taaffe
And who can forget the 2016 renewal when Sprinter Sacre completed the greatest of comebacks by becoming only the third horse to regain his Champion Chase crown. The ten-year-old had endured a difficult time since winning the race for the first time in 2013 but produced a brilliant display under Nico de Boinville to send the crowd into raptures
Altior gave Nico and trainer Nicky Henderson two wins in the race between 2017 and 2020, but his absence saw Politologue take the crown back to Ditcheat in 2020, giving Paul Nicholls a sixth Champion Chase win and owner, John Hales, a third after One Man and Azertyuiop had won the race for him in 1998 and 2004 respectively. Henry de Bromhead’s Put The Kettle On made it seven from the previous 11 Arkle winners to go on and win the Champion Chase in 2021. Energumene joined an illustrious list of dual winners last year and in doing so gave Willie Mullins back-to-back victories in the race
In his absence this year, El Fabiolo looks to be the leading hope to fly the Closutton flag.

RACE DESCRIPTION One of our newer races, the Glenfarclas Steeple Chase for five-year-olds and upwards is run over Cheltenham’s unique cross country course which provides a variety of fences, banks and turns for the runners to negotiate. Run over three miles five and a half furlongs, this cross-country race is considered one for specialists and therefore previous experience of this unique circuit can be considered advantageous.

Delta Work made it an impressive three Festival wins under Keith Donoghue after well fought battle with stablemate Galvin. The 2022 winner jumped excellently the whole way round and has found a new lease of life since switching to the cross-country fences Galvin did put up a good fight but his lack of experience over the obstacles showed when it really mattered. Both line up again this year in what looks a red hot renewal.

There are two categories of a frequent runner. Trainers with 40 or more horses and Trainers with 40 or fewer horses in training.
The Championship for the 2023/2024 season will start at Warwick on 25 September and will conclude at Warwick on the 30 May 2024.
All qualifying races are allocated a star rating (* to *****) with trainers awarded full points (star rating) for their first runner and half points for additional runners in the same race. These are based on the average numbers of runners a race has attracted over the previous two or three years as follows:
1
The star ratings for each qualifying race are marked with the race conditions.
Today’s Glenfarclas Cross Country Steeplechase is part of a European race series called The Crystal Cup. As well as here at Cheltenham, the series is competed at racecourses across France, Italy, Belgium, Poland and the Czech Republic.
Following today’s event there are just two stages of the current series remaining; Fontainebleau (March 29) and the final leg at Le Lion D’Angers (May 9).

RACE DESCRIPTION The Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Challenge Cup is a Premier Handicap Steeple Chase, named in honour of the late Johnny Henderson, the father of Nicky Henderson and the man who helped safeguard the future of Cheltenham racecourse in the 1960s, is the oldest race that takes place at The Festival. This handicap chase is run over two miles on the Old Course and is often run at a frantic pace. The race has been designed for five-year-olds and upwards and is often one of the most thrilling races of the whole week.
Last year’s favourite is 3-10 during the past 17 years
12 of the past 18 winners were aged between 6-8
10 of the past 13 winners were rated between 138-147
Maskada was sent the shortest route by Darragh O’Keeffe for Henry de Bromhead, with the pair hugging the rail throughout. Global Citizen set out in front in a bold bid to defend his crown and set some stern fraction in the first half of the race Favourite Dinoblue kept close tabs on the leader throughout and was joined by Maskada with three left to jump Dinoblue made a bad mistake at the last which meant Maskada was left in front to land the prize
Run over one mile, seven furlongs & 199 yards. 13 fences to be jumped

It’s a tightly-knit affair on paper compared to most renewals, with no standout on form, but JALON D’OUDAIRIES and Jasmin de Vaux may have the most potential, both point winners who have made a big impression so far under Rules The Yellow Clay’s connections had the runner-up in 2022 and they should be in the mix again with this 5-y-o, who caught the eye on his return at Leopardstown. Teeshan, a ready winner on Rules debut at Exeter, looks the pick of those trained in Britain.

The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst you are at Cheltenham Racecourse. The emergency exits from the bars onto the grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would request that you do not stop whilst in this area. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse We would also like to remind racegoers that the first aid room is located above the parade ring behind the See You Then Bar.
Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are subject to alteration. The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing.
All racehorses trained in Britain are stabled at the premises licensed by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). The standards demanded by BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation.
Similarly, BHA licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials and Cheltenham Racecourse staff work in conjunction to ensure that the highest standards are met. In addition Cheltenham Racecourse employs eight veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse
In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate attention and treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey.
If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the most appropriate equine hospital or Accident & Emergency Hospital.
