CHAMPIONDAY

Hello and a very warm welcome to Cheltenham Racecourse as we kick off the exhilarating Cheltenham Festival. Today is Champion Day, and we are delighted to have you back at the Home of Jump Racing for four days of thrilling action.
The Festival is not only the pinnacle of the Jumps season but also one of the great Anglo-Irish challenges – for those English trainers concerned at the Irish invasion led by Willie Mullins, they can take heart from Saturday’s result at Twickenham. In racing, as in rugby, the unthinkable can happen!
Our first championship race of the week is the Unibet Champion Hurdle at 3.30 pm, a race where the unfortunate absence of defending champion Constitution Hill creates an exciting opportunity for contenders like the Irish hero State Man, trained by Willie Mullins. The stage is set for him to add a Unibet Champion Hurdle to the Horse’s esteemed Grade 1 resume.
Make sure you head over to the parade ring for the Preview Show at 12.15pm, hosted by Martin Kelly, Aly Vance and Hayley Moore. They’re on hand to guide you through the day’s card, joined by special guests and the punters panel. Today’s Preview Show begins with welcoming back past Gold Cup winners Native River and Coneygree in the ROR parade and ends with another show stopping performance from Laura Wright who will be singing Unstoppable to officially open the day at 12.55pm.
As always our thanks go to our raceday sponsors who continue to support this wonderful event. Today, they include Sky Bet, My Pension Expert, Ultima, Unibet, Close Brothers and Boodles.
In between enjoying top-class racing, racegoers are encouraged to explore The Orchard, where the resident DJ sets the fun party vibe, the fashion
is fabulous and the bars are beautiful. This year we are delighted to welcome new brands including the famous London restaurant Gaucho, Aston Martin, Quintessentially and House of Clarity. The Orchard is available to Club Enclosure ticket holders, including Hospitality guests, Owners and Trainers, and all Cheltenham Annual Members.
Throughout the week we are celebrating the Centenary of the Cheltenham Gold Cup. A key part of these celebrations has been the creation of the Gold Cup 100 Community fund Cheltenham Racecourse has worked with multiple artists to raise money for the fund. Please visit the Shopping Village over the four days of the Festival to view the artworks. All items can be viewed on the on-line auction page: jumblebee.co.uk/goldcup100communityfund
Following a successful launch last year, The ‘Love Our Turf’ campaign has returned for another year. The initiative seeks to reinforce and strengthen the relationship between the community and the racecourse. You will find wayfinding ushers, street entertainment, enhanced cleaning and an increased number of toilets along the way.
As we look ahead to the rest of the week, racegoers are reminded that whilst Gold Cup Day is sold out, tickets are still available for Wednesday and Thursday if you wish to return and enjoy another day with us
Finally, we wish you all a wonderful day with us here on Champion Day and we look forward to welcoming you back here tomorrow.

The Festival at Cheltenham Racecourse has seen a great rivalry between the home team of British-trained runners and those crossing the Irish Sea for many years.
To celebrate this rivalry, the competition between the two countries is officially titled The Prestbury Cup
The Prestbury Cup runs from the first race of the four-day meeting, through until either country has 14 winners or more.
There are a total of 28 races during The Festival.
The Prestbury Cup, named after the nearest village to Cheltenham Racecourse, will be presented to jockeys and trainers from Ireland or Britain once the winning country is confirmed. The Cup itself has been sealed with some hallowed Cheltenham turf, so the winning country will be taking a little bit of Cheltenham with them.

Our experts are well-versed in businesses like yours,
A Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) parade of former racehorses takes place in the parade ring before the first race at approximately 12.30pm.
The parade showcases the versatility of the Thoroughbred, together with the range of activities open to horses when they finish their racing careers. Today’s 11 strong parade features some familiar names who have adapted to a new career, including the former Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Coneygree, the 2015 Hennessey Gold Cup winner Smad Place, the 2016 winner Native River and Grand National winner Pineau De Re.
RoR, British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses retired from racing, actively promotes the wellbeing of former racehorses through retraining, rehoming, and welfare support. Their mission is to safeguard the lifelong wellbeing of former racehorses by highlighting Thoroughbred versatility, educating new owners, and establishing a nationwide safety net for horses requiring charitable assistance. In the equestrian realm, RoR annually stages 39 separate competition series across 14 different disciplines, catering to all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite.”
For more information visit: www.ror.org.uk
1. BALTHAZAR KING – ridden by Michael Andrews
20-year-old by King’s Theatre, formerly trained by Philip Hobbs Breeder – Sunnyhill Stud
During a long and distinguished racing career Balthazar King won 16 times, including the Cross-Country Chase at the 2014 Cheltenham Festival. After recovering from a life-threatening injury incurred at Aintree, he was retired and enjoyed several seasons hunting with Izzi Beckett, wife of trainer Ralph. He has now moved on to be a ‘schoolmaster’ for Michael Andrews, The Jockey Club’s social media manager, with a view to competing in low-level dressage and show jumping. Michael says: “He is the most charming, loveable and intelligent horse.”
2. BRISTOL DE MAI – ridden by Clare Alexander
13-year-old by Saddlers Maker, formerly trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies Breeder – Jean-Yves Touzaint
Bristol de Mai retired in February 2023 following a stellar racing career, he has been at his new home with his rider Clare Alexander since last March, settling in beautifully to his new life; he is a big character and very intelligent. He has been out on hound exercise and autumn hunting with the Kent and Surrey Bloodhounds and Surrey Union Hunt which he really enjoys. Clare and Bristol de Mai have weekly lessons with a local event rider, and the plan for Bristol’s second career includes plenty of hunting along with hunter trials and one-day-events during the summer.
3. CHAMPAGNE FEVER – ridden by Georgia Marsland
17-Year-Old gelding by Stowaway, formerly trained by Willie Mullins Breeder – John P Cahill
Champagne Fever is owned by Harriet Colderick who has retrained and competed him successfully up to BE100. After many years of support from Harriet and the Colderick family, whilst working as their groom, Georgia is now very fortunate to now take the reins. Together they are enjoying some low-level eventing and dressage together The highlight for both was competing at the RoR Southern Regional Dressage Championships at Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials last September having gained some great dressage marks throughout the year Champagne Fever is an incredibly talented horse who loves to work and finds the low levels of the sport very easy with cross country being his favourite discipline. At 17 years old, he certainly shows no sign of slowing down, he has a very quirky personality and is loved by everyone on the yard
4. CONEYGREE - ridden by Lexie New 17-year-old by Karinga Bay, formerly trained by Mark Bradstock Breeder – Lord Oaksey
One of the leading staying chasers of his generation and the winner of the 2015 Cheltenham Gold Cup, Coneygree was retired from racing in February 2019. He adapted quickly to a life outside of racing and since being re-trained by Mark Bradstock’s wife Sara, Coneygree has won several RoR showing classes and twice qualified for the final of the Tattersalls RoR Show Series at Hickstead.
More recently Coneygree took part in the Cotswold Team Chase ridden by Alfie Bradstock and came up the hill towards the finish taking off just like he was winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup all over again.
5. DUC DES GENIEVRES – ridden by Jess Westwood 11-year-old by Buck’s Boum formerly trained by Tom George Breeder – Mme Colette Serre Duc Des Genievres retired from his outstanding racing career due to a tendon injury in 2021. He spent eighteen months with Jess Westwood recovering from his injury and was slowly rehabilitated back to work. With time and patience Duke won the Southwest RoR Intro Dressage Championship & took the National Intro Championship title at Aintree last year during his first competitive season. He has been given plenty of time and has started jumping which he thoroughly enjoys. The aim this year is to target the Jockey Club RoR National Championships where he has already qualified in the Novice Showing section. He enjoys most days out in the field after exercise, with his friends Monkerty Tunkerty and Coo Star Sivola, before coming into his king size stable, the task of grooming him is always interesting.
6. KEMBOY – ridden by Rachel Sharp
12-year-old by Voix Du Nord
formerly trained by Willie Mullins Breeder– Joelle Morruzzi & Philippe Morruzzi
Kemboy, the legend, a superstar and general lovely horse who has fitted into his retirement very easily. He ran and won his last race, The Bobby-Jo, in February 2023, he was due to retire at Punchestown of 2023 but sadly, he sustained an injury on the gallop, so his retirement was brought forward. We collected Kemboy in June 2023, he was then turned out in the field all Summer and Autumn, as we felt he needed a longer break. He was brought back into work in December, mainly hacking, but he has attended two training clinics, which he enjoyed. The future is to do RoR showing and dressage on him, and some jumping, but we will see as it is still early days in his retirement. We are very privileged as a family to have Kemboy in his retirement and to take things slowly and carefully
7. MELON – ridden by Sophie Candy
13-year-old gelding by Medicean, formerly trained by Willie Mullins Breeder – Newsells Park Stud
Melon joined today’s rider Sophie during the 2022 summer after a very successful racing career when trained by Willie Mullins, including four seconds at the Cheltenham Festival. Melon has continued to prove himself to be truly, an absolute gentleman. He was foot perfect here in the 2023 parade and continues to give Sophie the most wonderful days out. He has been out hunting plenty, thoroughly enjoying himself, a little too much at times. He has proved to be a very able team chaser, having had several wins with Team Ride Away ridden by Sophie’s partner Joe. He absolutely loves life, especially splashing in the river down by the yard
8. NATIVE RIVER – ridden by Emma Vine
14-year-old gelding by Indian River, formerly trained by Colin Tizzard Breeder – Fred Mackey
Following his retirement to Webb Hill Farm, Native River Aka Garfield initially enjoyed a few months out in the field. Since then, Native River has had a rather busy social calendar, he has attended a school prom, the 30th Anniversary of the Rocking Horse Nursery at Newbury Racecourse, Boodles in Bond Street and starred in numerous racecourse parades to mention a few. Alongside this he has transitioned well from racehorse to riding horse and enjoys his hacking and schooling, he absolutely thrives in his work and is a quick learner. He has recently attended dressage clinics and an RoR training day, this season the aim for Jazmin and Native River is to take part in some RoR showing classes, RoR dressage and jumping.
9. PINEAU DE RE - ridden by Lizzie Brunt
21-year-old gelding by Maresca Sorrento, formerly trained by Dr Richard Newland Breeder – Michel Hardy
Winner of the 2014 Grand National Pineau De Re retired from racing in 2016. Since then, after a period hunting, he has been competing in eventing at BE Novice level and in dressage, qualifying for the 2023 RoR Southern Dressage Championships at Blenheim. His regular rider Lizzie Brunt says of him: “He is so intelligent, by far the brightest horse I’ve ever ridden. I think this helped him win the National, along with his huge heart.”
10. SAPHIR DU RHEU – ridden by Charlotte Alexander
15-year-old gelding by Al Namix, formerly trained by Paul Nicholls Breeder – Claude Duval
A Grade 1 winner at Aintree, Saphir Du Rheu has been with Charlotte Alexander since he retired from racing in 2018. Very versatile, he has risen quickly through the eventing ranks to compete at Intermediate level, while in dressage he is about to start competing at medium level and is already doing well at Elementary. He is also doing some show jumping, as well as team chasing. Charlotte says: “Saphy loves life and particularly performing in front of a crowd where he grows another hand and knows everyone is admiring him.”
11. SMAD PLACE – ridden by Sarah Haydon
17-year-old gelding by Smadoun, formerly trained by Alan King Breeder – Eric Aubtee and Mme Maryse Aubree
Winner of the 2015 Hennessy Gold Cup, Smad Place was entrusted to Sarah Haydon in 2019, although he is still owned by his wonderfully supportive owner, Mrs Peter Andrews. Smad Place has been a wonderful example of an RoR- he has fitted into family life and adapted more than Sarah could ever imagine. They attended clinics, RoR camps and are hoping to qualify for the Jockey Club RoR National Championships which take place at Aintree every August. He is a true gentleman who still reminds everyone that he is the boss

SLADE STEEL may have lost his unbeaten record over hurdles at Leopardstown last month, but he bumped into a potentially exceptional novice in Ballyburn (short-priced favourite for the Gallagher) and is fancied to give that form a major boost by taking the curtain raiser. Tullyhill booked his spot for this with a dominant display at Punchestown and, with the timefigure supporting the performance, he requires the utmost respect, while his stablemates Mystical Power and Mistergif add further spice.

The Great British Bonus (GBB) offers multiple bonuses of up to £20,000 per eligible race for British-bred fillies and mares.
The Jockey Club South West Frequent Runner Scheme is aimed at rewarding trainers who run horses regularly at Jockey Club Racecourses in the South West Region - Cheltenham, Exeter, Warwick, and Wincanton.
There are two categories of a frequent runner. Trainers with 40 or more horses and Trainers with 40 or fewer horses in training.
The Championship for the 2023/2024 season will start at Warwick on 25 September and will conclude at Warwick on the 30 May 2024.
All qualifying races are allocated a star rating (* to *****) with trainers awarded full points (star rating) for their first runner and half points for additional runners in the same race. These are based on the average numbers of runners a race has attracted over the previous two or three years as follows:
1
- 18 plus runners 2 stars
The star ratings for each qualifying race are marked with the race conditions.
RACE DESCRIPTION The Grade 1 My Pension Expert Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices’ Steeple Chase is run over the minimum trip of two miles and features this season’s leading novice chasers, all tackling twelve demanding fences at breathtaking speed. Many great horses in the past have used this race as a stepping-stone to Champion Chase glory the following season and the Arkle is one of the highlights of the whole Festival. As is usual in a Grade 1 chase, all horses carry the same weight – 11st 7lb.
25 of the past 32 winners were rated 6 or 7
Horses rated 160+ are 7-15 since 2012
18 of the past 23 winners had won a Grade 1 or Grade 2 over fences
Dysart Dynamo bounded into his usual early lead, with Jonbon sitting in second and El Fabiolo close up in third The free going front runner led them along at a good gallop, with the market principles content with occupying the minor places for much of the contest. Jumping the second last, there was nothing to split the trio but it was El Fabiolo who emerged from it going the best He was long at the last but kicked clear up the hill to get Closutton on the board.
Run over one mile, seven furlongs & 199 yards. 12 fences to be jumped

Novices’ Chase was introduced to The Festival in 1969 as a replacement for the Cotswold Chase. It goes without saying that the race was named in honour of the legendary Arkle, a three-time winner of the Gold Cup in the mid-1960s.
The inaugural race, which was initially run on the second day of The Festival before being switched to its current slot in 1980, was won by the Fred Rimell-trained Chatham who was ridden by the late Terry Biddlecombe. In 1972 Fred Winter and Richard Pitman teamed up to win the Arkle with Pendil, a subsequent dual-winner of Kempton’s King George VI Chase where a race is now named in his honour 1978 Arkle winner, Alverton, certainly deserves a mention as the Peter Easterby-trained gelding is the only horse in the race’s history to go on to win the prestigious Gold Cup, a feat he achieved 12 months later when ridden by Jonjo O’Neill. Easterby was to win the Arkle twice more with Clayside in 1981 and Ryeman in 1983.
The 1991 renewal was notable for a trio of reasons.
Firstly, Waterford Castle stepped into become the first sponsor of the race and secondly, the Richard Dunwoody-ridden Remittance Man provided Nicky Henderson with the first of his record seven Arkle winners. But the most noticeable fact was that Remittance Man became the first horse to go on and win the Queen Mother Champion Chase. The Arthur Moore-trained Klarion Davis achieved the same feat in 1995 and 1996
A. P. McCoy won the first of his three Arkles when partnering the Martin Pipe-trained Or Royal to victory in 1997 and he didn’t have to wait long for his second, following up on Champleve the following year, again for Martin Pipe Flagship Uberalles gave Paul Nicholls his first Arkle success in 1999 and became the third horse to follow up in the Champion Chase, while Azertyuiop gave Nicholls the double when winning both races in 2003 and 2004.
Jessica Harrington’s Moscow Flyer was a hugely popular Arkle winner for Barry Geraghty in 2002, by which time the sponsorship baton had passed to the Irish Independent newspaper A year later, Moscow Flyer was welcomed back into the Winners’ Enclosure following his success in the Champion Chase, and again in 2005 when he regained his crown
In fact, the 2000s proved a hot period for the race as, in addition to Moscow Flyer, Voy Por Ustedes for Alan King and Robert Thornton achieved the Grade 1 double in 2006 and 2007, as did Sizing Europe for Henry de Bromhead and Andrew Lynch in 2010 and 2011.
Few will forget Sprinter Sacre’s scintillating success in the 2012 Arkle, which was the Racing Post’s first year of sponsorship, and he has since gone on to establish himself as one of the all-time greats with two victories in the Champion Chase.
The same trainer and jockey teamed up with Simonsig the following year and not only did his victory mean Nicky Henderson became the joint-leading trainer in the race but Barry Geraghty became the winning most rider. Henderson has since moved out on his own as Altior gave his trainer a sixth victory in 2017 before Shishkin made it seven in 2021.
Willie Mullins’ Champagne Fever was denied by 33/1 shot Western Warhorse in 2014 but he had no such problems in the following two years as Un De Sceaux and Douvan both landed the prize for Ireland’s Champion Trainer. The brilliant Footpad gave Mullins a third success in 2018, a victory which also moved jockey Ruby Walsh alongside Barry Geraghty on four wins, while 2019’s winner, Duc Des Genievres made it four wins since 2015 for Mullins, Paul Townend in the saddle this time, recording his first Arkle triumph. 2020’s renewal was taken by a mare for the first time since Anaglogs Daughter’s 1980 triumph as Put The Kettle On emerged victorious in brave style. In 2021 Shishkin followed in the footsteps of Sprinter Sacre and Altior to win the race for top trainer Nicky Henderson. Alan King returned to the roll of honour in 2022 with Edwardstone, who gave him a third success in the race
El Fabiolo took the prize back to Ireland for Willie Mullins after an impressive performance under Paul Townend

RACE DESCRIPTION The Ultima is a Premier Handicap and is the first Handicap Steeple Chase of The Festival. The aim of a handicap is to ensure a level playing field for all - achieved by allocating different weights to each of the runners based on what they have achieved on the racecourse so far All horses possess an official BHA rating that reflects their relative abilities. The higher the rating, the bigger the weight the horse has to carry – see how top-weight Eldorado Allen, rated 153, carries 4lb more than Run Wild Fred, rated 149.

Progressive pair Meetingofthewaters and Stumptown make the shortlist, while Chianti Classico makes the most appeal from the home team.

RACE DESCRIPTION
The third Grade 1 race on today’s card, the Unibet Champion Hurdle is the historic Championship race for two-mile hurdlers and is the highestquality race of its type run anywhere in the world. The crème de la crème of Europe’s speed hurdlers will all be in the line-up chasing a first prize of £262,077. All of the runners are set to carry 11st 10lb, except Luccia who receives 7lb as a mare and carried 11st 3lb.
29 of the past 34 winners won last time out
15 of the past 25 winners had previously won at the Festival
11 of the past 13 winners were unbeaten during the current season
Constitution Hill continued to write his name into the history books after his emphatic success in last year’s Unibet Champion Hurdle. He was an absolute joy to watch as he effortlessly navigated his way round the eight hurdles under an almost motionless Nico de Boinville State Man gave his brilliant best to try and go with him but he was only even chasing in vain as one of racings modern greats pulled further and further clear.
Run over two miles, eighty-seven yards. 8 hurdles to be jumped
Total prize fund of £465,750 £262,077 to the winner

The Unibet Champion Hurdle is without doubt the most prestigious hurdle race in the calendar. Run over a distance of two miles and 87 yards, with eight flights to be jumped, the race was first run in 1927.
That inaugural race was won by Blaris, earning connections the grand sum of £365 Twelve months later, Brown Jack added his name to the Roll of Honour before switching codes to win the Queen Alexandra Stakes six times from 1929-34 Only three runners went to post in 1932 – the smallest field in the race’s history. Insurance proved victorious that day and confirmed his superiority by following up twelve months later
The post-war years saw the race’s first triple winner Hatton’s Grace, trained by the legendary Vincent O’Brien, dominated from 1949-51 He was swiftly followed by Sir Ken who recorded a hat-trick of wins for Willie Stephenson from 1952-54 and still holds the record of being the shortest-priced winnersent off a 2/5 favourite in 1953 He was ridden by Tim Molony who with four victories is the winning most rider
The late 60s saw the emergence of another superstar in the shape of Persian War who ruled the race for trainer Colin Davies, winning three times from 1968-1970. The 70s provided some well-known winners and even today few will need little introduction. Bula recorded back-to-back wins in 1971-72, Comedy Of Errors’ two wins in 1973 and 1975 were sandwiched around the victory of a certain Lanzarote, before Night Nurse 1976-77, Monksfield 1978-79 and Sea Pigeon 1980-81 all recorded doubles.
In 1984 Dawn Run, trained by Paddy Mullins, emerged on the scene and started re-writing the history books That year she became only the second mare to win the Unibet Champion Hurdle – also adding the Irish and French versions, and two years later she added the Gold Cup and remains the only horse to have completed the Champion Hurdle-Gold Cup double.
Nicky Henderson’s See You Then dominated the race from 1985-87 to become the race’s fourth three-time winner.
The most recent three-time winner came in 1998-2000 when Istabraq helped launch the career of a certain Aidan O’Brien. He was odds-on to become the first four-time winner of the race in 2001 but was cruelly denied due to the entire Festival being lost to the foot-and-mouth outbreak
In recent times, Hurricane Fly excelled in 2011 and although he missed the following year through injury, he returned in 2013 to regain his crown He could finish only fourth in 2014 and in his final attempt at the race, he finished a gallant third behind stablemate Faugheen in 2015.
Willie Mullins also saddled the winner in 2016 as Annie Power became the first mare since Flakey Dove in 1994 and just the fourth overall to win the Unibet Champion Hurdle. 2017 and 2018 saw Nicky Henderson’s Buveur d’Air cross the line first and extend his trainer’s tally of victories in the race to seven. He fell in the 2019 renewal when bidding for the hat-trick and instead, it was JP McManus’ other representative, the Gavin Cromwelltrained Espoir d’Allen, who became the first five-year-old since Katchit in 2008 to win the premier two-mile hurdle in the National Hunt calendar, and he did so in some style
Epatante made it back-to-back wins for JP McManus’ in 2020 before finishing third in 2021 and second in 2022. The winner on both those occasions was the superstar mare Honeysuckle for Henry de Bromhead who had done a brilliant job with the Queen of Ireland before her retirement last Festival. In the absence of last years victor Constitution Hill, a new name will be written onto the roll of honour.

RACE DESCRIPTION
The Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle race, now in its sixteenth year, has largely been dominated by Willie Mullins, largely thanks to the brilliant race mare Quevega who won the race six times. This Grade 1 hurdle race, run over about two and a half miles, is designed specifically for fillies and mares. With no four-year-olds in today’s line-up, all of the runners are set to carry 11st 5lb.
13 of the 16 winners were trained in Ireland
12 of the 16 winners won last time out
12 of the 15 winners were aged 5-7
Honeysuckle bowed out from racing the only way she knew how last year by winning the Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle. The now four time Cheltenham Festival winner was a popular selection before the race, with Rachel Blackmore initially opting to make the running until Love Envoi took it up after the third The pair would stay there the whole way round, with Love Envoi jumping the last marginally in front however Honeysuckle would not be beaten and powered up the hill to produce a fairytale ending
Run over two miles three furlongs & 200 yards. 10 hurdles to be jumped Total prize fund of £120,000 £67,524 to the winner

RACE DESCRIPTION
The Boodles Juvenile Handicap Hurdle is a Premier Handicap restricted to juveniles (four-year-olds), so many of the runners in this two miles and half a furlong race will still be very inexperienced over hurdles As with the handicap earlier in the card, the higher the rating, the bigger the weight a horse has to carry - see how Liari rated 134, carries 4lb more than the 130-rated Miss Manzor.
10 of the 19 winners began their careers in France
12 of the 19 winners carried 11-0 or more
11 of the 19 winners had exactly 3 runs
A frantic finish saw Jazzy Matty just prevail in a three way go between himself, Byker and Risk Belle. Michael O’Sullivan had kept Jazzy Matty on the outside of the main pack for much of the race, opting to take the scenic route to ensure he would get a clear run He was easy to pick out as they approached the last and was slightly out jumped by Risk Belle however he showed the superior turn of foot to win by a neck to a gallant Byker.
Run over two miles, eighty-seven yards. 8 hurdles to be jumped

RACE DESCRIPTION
The Maureen Mullins National Hunt Steeple Chase has a rich history and, in its heyday, was second only to the Grand National when it came to the most prestigious races of the season. Nowadays, the race is restricted to novices aged five-years-old and upwards and is run over about three miles and six furlongs – the longest race over regulation obstacles during the entire Festival. All runners this afternoon carry 11st 7lb, except Apple Away who receives 7lb as a mare and as a result carried 11st.
24 of the past 33 winners were aged 7 or 8
10 of the past 13 winners returned a single figure SP
12 of the past 14 winners had contested a Graded novice race
Gaillard Du Mesnil looked to have an excellent chance on paper coming into the race last year after he had finished third in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase 12 months prior Patrick Mullins kept him anchored at the back of the field, while Mahler Mission made sure it was a stern test up top. Mr J C Barry had a five length lead when falling two from home and it left the race at the mercy of Chemical Energy and Gaillard Du Mesnil. The latter looked to have it all to do but showed his class to reel in the winner
Run over three miles, five furlongs & 201 yards. 21 Fences to be jumped

You will occasionally see letters after a horse’s form figures in the racecard today - for example 45-2301 CD BF. But what do these actually mean and why are they shown?
C Stands for course and simply means that the horse has previously won here at this course. You may have heard the phrase ‘Horses for courses’ which implies that some horses perform better at certain racecourses. Therefore, previous winning form here may suggest that it will run well again today.
D Stands for distance and means that the horse has won over the same distance it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit.
CD Stands for course and distance so not only has the horse previously won here but when doing so it also won over the same distance that it is racing over today. So, winning form over today’s course and distance may indicate that another strong performance is on the cards.
C D If there is gap between the C and the D it means that the horse has previously won here and also won over the same distance that it is racing over today but at another racecourse. So today’s distance should suit and the horse will also be suited by the course.
BF Stands for Beaten Favourite. Advises that a horse was well-fancied in the past but despite being sent off favourite it failed to win. This can be off-putting to some punters especially if it is sent off favourite again today.
So now when you run through today’s runners and riders in the racecard you can identify which horses run well at this course and those which will be well suited by the distance that they are racing over.
• Full refunds for tickets will be given if racing is abandoned before the first race.
• A 50% refund will be given if racing is abandoned before the third or feature race No cash refunds will be given on the day, but will be administered by post after the meeting. Applications for refunds should be sent within one month after the fixture except for The Festival presented by Magners when refunds will be processed automatically No refunds will be given for tickets that are purchased and then not required or used.

The Racecourse would be grateful if you would observe all Health & Safety requirements whilst you are at Cheltenham Racecourse. The emergency exits from the bars onto the grandstand steppings are painted yellow and we would request that you do not stop whilst in this area. We would also request that only those that are disabled use the disabled viewing ramp and that parents keep a close eye on all children and prevent them from climbing the running rails and getting on to the actual racecourse We would also like to remind racegoers that the first aid room is located above the parade ring behind the See You Then Bar.
Weights, Pedigrees, Trainers’ Names, Descriptions, Performances and Values of races have been added for the convenience of the Public, but are subject to alteration. All horses must parade in the Parade Ring except by permission of the Stewards, but in all cases must pass through the Ring on the way to the Post. An injunction has been issued preventing touting at the Racecourse. You could yourself be breaking the law by dealing with a tout Genuine tickets sales are available at all the entrances or in advance via the Racecourse website

The welfare of the sport’s equine and human participants is paramount to British Horseracing.
All racehorses trained in Britain are stabled at the premises licensed by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA). The standards demanded by BHA of licensed racehorse trainers far exceed those prescribed by animal welfare legislation.
Similarly, BHA licenses every racecourse, setting high standards for the racing surface and all parts of the course used by competitors, both human and equine. BHA Officials and Cheltenham Racecourse staff work in conjunction to ensure that the highest standards are met. In addition Cheltenham Racecourse employs eight veterinary surgeons, whose sole responsibility it is to provide care to the horses throughout their time at the racecourse
In the event of an incident on the racecourse, any horse affected will receive immediate attention and treatment from the racecourse’s veterinary team Qualified paramedics and doctors are also on hand in the case of any incident involving a jockey.
If any incident occurs during a race it is routine practice for screens to be erected around the horse or jockey receiving treatment. This is to allow the veterinary or medical personnel to make a safe and accurate diagnosis and so that they may perform any treatment in a private and calm environment If necessary, horses and riders will be transported from the course to receive further treatment at the most appropriate equine hospital or Accident & Emergency Hospital
