TONIGHT’S RACING

TONIGHT’S SPONSORS

Welcome to Chelmsford City Racecourse

We are, particularly, delighted to welcome you today, as this is the first time we have staged a Sunday Series fixture, during which the ITV cameras will be filming the whole afternoon. Oli Bell will be conducting interviews, mainly in the paddock area, while Luke Harvey will be wandering around amongst you, soaking up the atmosphere and interviewing members of the public. We also have Leonna Mayor and Dan Barber offering their insight and analysis into the potential winners.

In the middle of the racecourse, there are numerous inflatables and in the Summer Marquee there are arcade games, mini golf, face painting, children’s entertainers, as well as a DJ from 4.00pm onwards; so, plenty of fun for all the family.

Let’s not forget the Shetland Pony race at 2.45pm, followed by seven races, commencing at 3.45pm. We are hoping that this will be an afternoon to remember and trust that you have a fantastic time.

For more information about any of our upcoming events please visit chelmsfordcityracecourse.com or call the office on 01245 360300.

Timeform Rating

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

2020

What looked to be a sensational sixth year at Chelmsford City Racecourse, like most the racecourse found itself disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic.

The racecourse prevailed becoming one of the first to return with ‘behind closed doors’ racing, managing to successfully stage the majority of its calendar as well as preparing to open as one of the South East’s largest vaccination centres in the new year.

The Chelmer Stakes headlined the racing calendar, with course specialist Sean Levey and Happy Romance claiming victory in the thrilling six-furlong sprint. The racecourse also brought world-class music to Essex, hosting Example’s first UK performance since the pandemic in September 2021

The Cardinal Stakes, the racecourse’s premier event, featured a prestigious Conditions race with a remarkable £100,000 prize fund Additionally, to commemorate Racing Together Community Day, the racecourse proudly supported the Eden Project’s Carers Week, raising awareness of unpaid carers and the challenges they face. 2022

PLAY SMARTER

This looks wide open but MESAAFI went through the race at Ascot last time as though ahead of his mark and with one of the more accomplished apprentice riders booked, he could be the answer. Farasi Lane hasn’t raced over a sprint trip since his juvenile days and while it promises to suit, stall 14 is a potential issue, so Musical Touch is feared most.

10 Years of Community and Supporting our Important Equine Partners

We are proud to welcome Racing to School and the charity Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) here today, along with our RoR ambassador horse I am the Man also known as Manny

Racing to School

Since 2022, Chelmsford City Racecourse has actively supported Racing to School, an educational charity dedicated to inspiring young minds through free activity days at racing venues. Last week, pupils from Great Leighs Primary School enjoyed a fun and educational day at the racecourse as a post-SATs treat—learning all about the world of racing, dressing up in jockey silks, and with some even returning later with their parents to enjoy an exciting evening of racing

Former jump jockey Ollie McPhail, Programme Manager from Racing to School, spoke about his career after racing; “I have been very fortunate to retrain for a second job that I love. The work we do offers real value to young people and promotes so many positive aspects about racing-as a sport and a potential employer I enjoy challenging the school children, and their teachers, to tune into everyday racing activities like checking a jockey’s weight or working out race distances as a way of improving their maths skills. Many of them want to learn more and say they want to come back.

We are so grateful to all the team at Chelmsford City for allowing the charity to invite schools to have such a privileged day of learning. The racecourse is keen to strengthen its links with the community, and we look forward to inviting more schools to take part in the programme”

Retraining of Racehorses

Established in 2000 RoR believes every former racehorse deserves a life well lived, with a mission to safeguard their wellbeing and ensure they find new purpose and loving homes. Every year, more than 2,000 racehorses retire from racing in Great Britain. Like people changing jobs, these horses need to learn new skills, adapt to new environments and sometimes find new homes.

RoR provides training and education for owners to build lifelong partnerships with their retired racehorses, while also promoting the versatility of these horses across a range of equestrian activities. In addition, RoR supports former racehorses in times of need through its dedicated welfare initiatives.

Chelmsford City Racecourse makes regular contributions to RoR and in 2024 joined the RoR scheme by adopting a racecourse ambassador, and today we welcome Manny Twenty-year-old Manny was formerly trained by Brian McMath and since retiring in 2011 from his short racing career, has been training with Chelsea Rowe.

His retraining was done with a combination of hunting, jumping dressage and showing which he really loved, and he was taken to clinics supported by RoR, and good show producers.

Chelsea describes him as being “a cheeky chappy, one in a million, and like a labrador very chilled out and absolutely laps up attention, if he could he would stand and be groomed all day long! He’s generally a really sweet boy with kids, he absolutely adores them, especially if they come armed with carrots, his favourite treat!

He’s been an incredible show horse who really comes alive in the show ring, taking me to my first ever Royal International competition, and qualifying multiple times for the Hickstead retraining of racehorses final, which he’s again qualified for at the grand age of 20!”

Guests are invited to an exclusive meet-and-greet with Manny in his enclosure near the Queen Charlotte marquee. Don’t miss the chance to visit the Racing to School team by the kids’ activity area, to test your skills on the mechanical horse or experience the thrill of being a jockey with their interactive VR headsets!

Be sure to stop by the RoR stand to chat with their volunteers, and if you can make a donation no matter how big or small, your support is greatly appreciated.

CARLTON has a good record at Chelmsford with five starts yielding five victories, with four of those wins coming over this trip. He does need a career best off his new mark upped in class, but still appears to have every chance. Kitty Furnival has to be of interest despite top-weight after her second at Lingfield, leaving Almudena as an interesting alternative after five top-three finishes in a row to end last year

AN INTERVIEW WITH HAYLEY TURNER OBE

Hayley is a pioneer for women in racing, boasting a career full of groundbreaking achievements, culminating in her 1,000th career win while riding Tradesman to victory at Chelmsford.

Historically, racing was considered a men’s sport; however, in recent years, significant progress has been made, and women have truly taken the reins. Ladies Day at the races has historically been synonymous with grace, style, and a celebration of women in fashion and status. What once served as a welcoming day for women has now evolved into a platform where they shine both in their attire and in the saddle.

Fast forward to 2025, and the spotlight is no longer solely on the elegant attendees; it is equally shared with the fearless and talented female jockeys who compete at the highest levels of the sport. To honour this evolution, we are proud to share a multi-channel campaign that showcases the remarkable stories of inspirational women on and off the track.

For Ladies Day 2025, Chelmsford City Racecourse is proud to not only showcases the remarkable journeys of inspirational female jockeys but also celebrates a broader spectrum of showstopping and extraordinary women. From trailblazers in sport to icons in business, arts, community work, and beyond—this is a moment to honour the incredible achievements and stories of women making a difference.

Three standout partnerships will bring this vision to life: beauty powerhouse MACCosmetics(based in John Lewis Chelmsford), luxury department store FenwickColchester, and award-winning employment charity SmartWorks Together, they will transform Ladies Day 2025 into a celebration of empowerment, transformation, and purpose.

In collaboration with MAC, Every Shade of Showstopping will spotlight a handpicked group of women—from athletes and entrepreneurs to community champions—through professional beauty makeovers and digital storytelling that

In our first feature, we sat down with Essex-born Charlotte Brew, the trailblazer who made history as the first female jockey to ride in the Grand National in 1977 Now, on International Women’s Day 2025, we continue this journey with an exclusive interview with Hayley Turner OBE, a true pioneer who achieved her 1000th career win right here at Chelmsford City Racecourse.

There was only a neck to separate Ciara Pearl (first) and BOWERCHALKE (second) when they met at Nottingham recently, and the latter is taken to overturn the form having challenged from a difficult position towards the rear on that occasion. The unexposed Likealot drops in class after a disappointing effort in Listed company at Newbury, while She’s A Warrior has the potential to improve.

Roger Varian’s low-mileage Sioux Nation filly SHE’S A WARRIOR looks to have got in lightly for her first go in handicap company so earns a confident vote with this step up in trip also a likely plus. Ralph Beckett’s C&D winner Likealot has better days ahead of her too and is next on the list with Lady Chartwell and Ciara Pearl also well in the mix. Bowerchalke completes the shortlist in this intriguing handicap.

Great British Bonus Scheme

The Great British Bonus (GBB) incentivises and rewards with breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by paying out bonuses of up to £100,000 per filly And now with GBBPlus to further incentivise staying fillies and chasing mares, there are more reasons than ever to breed, buy and race British. Majority funded by the HBLB.
