Chelmsford City Racecard - Saturday 11th March

Page 4

Official Programme £3.00
Evening Racing Saturday 11th March 2023

Welcome to Chelmsford City Racecourse

We have a competitive seven-race card for you this evening with our feature race at 6.30pm, The £25,000 Betsi Handicap, looking very open. There are ten runners with four of them being course and distance winners but Tiger Crusade gets the nod from me, as he has run well here in the past and has been in terrific form so far this year.

Tonight’s card consists of six handicaps plus a novice contest at 6.00pm with nine runners. The object of both maiden and novice races is to give horses racecourse experience, whilst also allowing the BHA handicapper the opportunity to estimate their likely level of ability before he has to give them a rating, at which time they become eligible to run in handicaps. Winners of a race can run in a novice race, although they have to carry a 7lbs penalty; however, none of tonight’s runners have won a race, so it is in reality a maiden race.

It is often worth paying a visit to the paddock before a maiden or novice race to look at the horses and assess their physical appearance, as there is usually limited racecourse form on which to base an opinion.

Good luck and I hope you have an enjoyable evening.

For more information about any of our upcoming events please visit chelmsfordcityracecourse.com or call the office on 01245 360300.

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.

The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).

The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

CITY SELECTIONS

Stormingin (winner) got the better of PERSIAN WOLF (second) over C&D last month, but the latter, who is favoured by his draw in stall one, and on revised terms, is taken to reverse that form en route to victory. Miss Harmony has been running to a consistent level recently and she’s more than capable of being involved, along with recent Kempton scorer Island Of Skye, though he does have stamina to prove over this longer trip.

PLAY SMARTER

An opening-looking apprentice handicap to start proceedings and SUN FESTIVAL gets the tentative nod to double her career tally back down in trip from this career-low mark. The main threat could be Island of Skye, who showed improved form to narrowly get off the mark at Kempton earlier this month, while Persian Wolf and veteran Stormingin are another couple worthy of a mention.

CITY SELECTIONS

With an official rating of 73, SUPER MO sets the standard and, if first-time blinkers can aid some improvement, he could open his account at the fifth time of asking. Flash Bardot has some solid form in the book and she’s capable of making her presence felt. Poet’s Prize is related to some smart types and she’s one to monitor in the betting market ahead of her racecourse bow, while Seahrena heads the remainder following a creditable debut effort.

CITY SELECTIONS

TIGER CRUSADE returned to winning ways at Lingfield last month, when he recorded a narrow success, and David Simcock’s charge is fancied to follow up from a 2lb higher mark.

Mums Tipple struggled in Listed company on his latest outing but he looks set to go well down in grade, while On A Session has become too well treated to ignore and he must go on the shortlist. Others to note include Lord Of The Lodge and Amber Island.

There was enough in ON A SESSION’s sixth at Southwell last month to suggest he’s about as good as he was last year, so having dropped to a career-low mark and with a decent pace to aim at almost guaranteed, he gets the nod for David & Nicola Barron. Tiger Crusade won for the second time this year at Lingfield 3 weeks ago and he may emerge as the main danger, ahead of Lord of The Lodge and Mums Tipple, in a fascinating feature contest.

THE BANANARAMA ON LADIES DAY 22ND JUNE

HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 4) for

CITY SELECTIONS

Maysong has been threatening to win a race of this nature of late, but he often finds himself with too much to do. With this in mind, a chance is taken on BARGING THRU, who was last seen running one of his better races when fourth at Wolverhampton and he now races off the same mark as when winning at that same venue in May. Secret Strength arrives in better form than most and completes the shortlist.

BARGING THRU Maysong

Leading course trainer (17-22): M Appleby (77 wins from 630 runners, 12%) runs MOHAREB

Weightwatcher: MOHAREB won off a handicap mark of 88, his rating is now down 11lb to 77.

SECRET STRENGTH returned to his best when scoring at Lingfield last month and would have benefited from a stronger gallop when not beaten far at the same course next time, so he is taken to resume winning ways this time around. Toussarok can fare better with his reappearance behind him and is feared most, ahead of Maysong.
