We have a competitive seven-race card for you this evening with our feature race at 6.30pm, The £25,000 Betsi Handicap, looking very open. There are ten runners with four of them being course and distance winners but Tiger Crusade gets the nod from me, as he has run well here in the past and has been in terrific form so far this year.
Tonight’s card consists of six handicaps plus a novice contest at 6.00pm with nine runners. The object of both maiden and novice races is to give horses racecourse experience, whilst also allowing the BHA handicapper the opportunity to estimate their likely level of ability before he has to give them a rating, at which time they become eligible to run in handicaps. Winners of a race can run in a novice race, although they have to carry a 7lbs penalty; however, none of tonight’s runners have won a race, so it is in reality a maiden race.
It is often worth paying a visit to the paddock before a maiden or novice race to look at the horses and assess their physical appearance, as there is usually limited racecourse form on which to base an opinion.
Good luck and I hope you have an enjoyable evening.

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Stormingin (winner) got the better of PERSIAN WOLF (second) over C&D last month, but the latter, who is favoured by his draw in stall one, and on revised terms, is taken to reverse that form en route to victory. Miss Harmony has been running to a consistent level recently and she’s more than capable of being involved, along with recent Kempton scorer Island Of Skye, though he does have stamina to prove over this longer trip.

PLAY SMARTER
An opening-looking apprentice handicap to start proceedings and SUN FESTIVAL gets the tentative nod to double her career tally back down in trip from this career-low mark. The main threat could be Island of Skye, who showed improved form to narrowly get off the mark at Kempton earlier this month, while Persian Wolf and veteran Stormingin are another couple worthy of a mention.

With an official rating of 73, SUPER MO sets the standard and, if first-time blinkers can aid some improvement, he could open his account at the fifth time of asking. Flash Bardot has some solid form in the book and she’s capable of making her presence felt. Poet’s Prize is related to some smart types and she’s one to monitor in the betting market ahead of her racecourse bow, while Seahrena heads the remainder following a creditable debut effort.

Plenty in with a squeak but with SAM’S CALL’s effort at Newcastle last week easily excused, he’s fancied to get back on the up and double his career tally Dark Design has filled the runner-up spot on his last couple of starts and he may have to settle for that position once again, while May Remain and Top Exhibit can battle it out for minor honours.

CITY SELECTIONS
Thank The Lord is better than showing last time and is dangerous to underestimate with his peak form taken into consideration, while Mustaffiz catches the eye from his basement rating and isn’t ruled out with cheekpieces reapplied. However, preference is for MUNIFICENT, whose latest outing resulted in a respectable third and, given the runner-up from that race won on her next start, it would come as no surprise to see him follow suit.
Leading course trainer (17-22): C Wallis (25 wins from 275 runners, 9%) runs MUSTAFFIZ & PROCLIVITY
Trainer-in-form (last 14 days): D Shaw (2 wins from 7 runners, 29%) runs YOU’RE COOL

GIORGIO VASARI was a good third back over this trip at Lingfield last week and, off the same mark, he is taken to exploit what looks to be a highly competitive rating. Formerly in the care of Aidan O’Brien, his sights are set much lower these days but he retains more than enough ability to score at this level. Taskheer and Mcqueen complete the shortlist.

MCQUEEN had been holding his form well prior to a below-par effort at Wolverhampton last time, so with cheekpieces reapplied he appeals as the type to bounce back quickly returned to 1m. The 4-y-o can land the finale, though Giorgio Vasari isn’t taken lightly after getting back on track a week ago. Channel Packet completes the shortlist.
