A brief history of Catterick Racecourse brief
The present day Catterick Racecourse is located on a site where once a 6,000-seater Roman amphitheatre stood, moreover the remains of Roman walls can still be seen on the infield if you know where to look.
Back in Roman times the fort and amphitheatre at Cataractonium would have doubled as a military parade ground and entertainment venue, where the public would have enjoyed the games and watching gladiators duelling to the death!
In some respects, little has changed since then! Today the same land still serves as an outdoor public venue (albeit with less gladiatorial contests) and the military camp has moved a mile or so up the road, where Catterick Garrison is currently the British Army’s largest base.
Originally part of Brough Hall, which itself lies about a mile to the west of Catterick Racecourse, the racecourse site is owned by the Worthington family. The former long serving racecourse chairman Valerie Worthington is the daughter of Sir Ralph Henry Lawson, who was the 4th Baronet of Brough Hall. These days Valerie is enjoying a much deserved retirement, however, there are still strong family connections with her son Greville Worthington being both the landlord and a director of the racecourse company.
Although it is believed that racing took place in the area as far back as the Roman era, the first recorded fixture at the present location was a two-day affair over Easter Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd April 1783.
It is believed that a permanent racecourse was established 1813 and the first grandstand was added in 1906, moreover the framework of that original grandstand is still evident today.
The Catterick Racecourse Company Limited was officially incorporated on 23rd March 1923 at a time when the Jockey Club was flexing its muscles and establishing some central control over the sport of horseracing. One such Jockey Club requirement of racecourses was that they must each establish a formal trading entity and submit annual accounts for inspection by the Stewards!
At the turn of the 21st century a time capsule was buried under the Parade Ring, which is not to be disturbed for at least 50 years! Moreover, since the turn of the century much has been done to improve Catterick Racecourse, including a new stable yard and stable staff hostel, a new horsebox park, new offices, entrances and lavatories, the creation of the Winning Streak Dine & View restaurant, the redevelopment of the Weighing Room and jockeys’ facilities, a new Parade Ring and Winner’s Enclosure, the building of the Dales Stand (for Owners & Trainers) and most recently, the redevelopment of existing buildings to create Longshots Bar and the Horseshoe Café Bar.
For anyone who is familiar with Catterick pre-2000 but has not been since, the place would now be unrecognisable! Sadly, the same can also be said for the Bridge House Hotel across the road, a once thriving hostelry which has fast become a ruin over the equivalent period.
