Ayr Racecard - Thursday 1st May

Page 1

Welcome to Ayr Racecourse and whether you are a first-time racegoer or a seasoned racing enthusiast, I hope you have an enjoyable experience with us today.

We hold our first Evening Flat fixture of 2025 today featuring six races and I’d like to thank our owners and trainers for choosing to run their horses here tonight. Our very own Ayr Racecourse Racing Club horse Penelope’s sister is running tonight at 7.30pm, for the first time this year, with all of the members joining fees having been donated to our charity partner Ayrshire Cancer Support. Their new cancer centre in Ayr is due to open later in May

Congratulations to Glasses Up and all connected to him, the 10-year-old is officially the most prolific Flat winner at Ayr holding the record of 9 wins at the track having prevailed in the 1m5f race on Monday.

Our next feature raceday is Saturday 21 June the Unite Scotland Summer Raceday when we will have JLS member Marvin Humes once again providing the post-race entertainment and we will also show live racing from Royal Ascot be sure not to miss out. After racing we have Dave Galloway playing in Western House between 8 and 11. Please feel free to pop down and enjoy the entertainment.

I would also like to thank our racegoers for attending today and wish you all an enjoyable and successful day out at Ayr and a safe journey home.

Don’t forget our next meeting... WEDNESDAY 21ST MAY

Horses which have not raced will not have a form rating, as may some horses which have raced but not recently in Britain or their performances to-date have not yet merited a rating.

HOW TO BET

1. Pick your Racehorse, look around for the best odds on course, try to proffer the correct stake money for your wager

RACE RESULT DISTANCES

DAN TUCKER went down fighting to an 83-rated opponent on seasonal debut/first run since being gelded at Nottingham 22 days ago. Beaten less than a length in that race, the son of Dandy Man sets a decent standard and could be very tough to overhaul. El Pinto ran green in both starts as a juvenile but certainly showed ability. He resumes as a credible option. Mister Invincible and the newcomer Summerstorms Dream are others to monitor in the betting.

Ski Angel won this corresponding race off 2lb higher 12 months ago and, with Rhys Elliott claiming a further 5lb form the saddle, is dangerous to underestimate. However, Michael Dods plays a strong hand with both King’s Crown and NELSON GAY holding bigger chances. The latter shades a narrow vote, though, as he is potentially the better handicapped of the pair based on their peak ratings. Back Tomorrow is another for the shortlist.

TODAY’S

JOCKEY

TO WATCH - CONNOR BEASLEY

Connor drew a blank from 4 rides here on Monday’s opening day of the track’s new Flat season but he did manage a second and third to earn points in our seasonal championship and he’s back for 3 more mounts this evening. The jockey rides principally for Darlington trainer Michael Dods who provides all 3 rides on tonight’s card at 5.50, 6.25 and 7.00 but he’s regularly in demand to ride horses for other yards and spent a fruitful spell in Dubai before returning to Britain for the start of the Turf season last month. Beasley finished 32nd in last year’s annual jockey returns for the Flat with 55 of his 66 winners counting towards the jockeys’ championship which ran from May until October and the 30 year-old landed the UAE 2000 Guineas and the Saudi Derby this winter as well as a Group 1 double at Meydan on Dubai World Cup night early last month.

TODAY’S TRAINER TO WATCH - MIKE SMITH

Local trainer Smith didn’t hang around after Glasses Up gave him another winner here at Ayr on Monday as he had to dash off for a flight to Ireland where he was due to saddle Buy Some Time in the Albert Bartlett Final at Punchestown the following day Victory for Glasses Up was a notable one due to the veteran recording his NINTH Flat win here at Ayr, a record which is now one more than the Jim Goldie-trained Tommy G and Dianne Sayer’s Redarna, both of which have registered 8 wins here on the level. Glasses Up is one of 8 runners back here today for Smith and while he drops back to 10 furlongs in the search for a tenth win at Ayr, the form he showed under David Allan on Monday would suggest that he’s just as good as ever in his own grade.

THE SUNDAY LUNCH AT WESTERN HOUSE HOTEL HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 6) for four yrs old and upwards x Total prize fund £7000 Prize Money £3663 to the winning horse The second to receive £1719 the third £858 the fourth £429 and the fifth £214.

Several old rivals come together and there is little to choose between any of them on past form. However, INANNA could be worth forgiving Monday’s effort over 6f as she was too keen for her own good and failed to show her true colours as a result. Running off just 3lb above her last winning mark, Jim Goldie’s mare is well worth another chance. Clasina and Darbucks should be on the premises, while Golden Valour likes it here and can also go well. totewin: Inanna

Glasses Up proved he retains plenty of enthusiasm at the ripe age of 10 when a game winner over 1m5f here on Monday, and Mike Smith’s gelding merits respect under the penalty. That being said, he might prefer further nowadays and preference is afforded to LAUDABLE Running on the all-weather over the winter yielded mixed results for the son of Havana Gold, but he will relish the return to turf and his current mark is well within range. Penelope’s Sister is also noted. totewin: Laudable

4TH TIME

ALFIE BOY was in command when defeating Hostelry (second) at Beverley recently and, if arriving in a similar mood today, he ought to hold every chance of defying the 5lb penalty for that success. The latter is expected to keep him honest, though, but a bigger threat might come from Braes Of Doune Jim Goldie’s gelding shaped with promise on his return to action at Doncaster on Saturday and appears likely to enter calculations.

Probable S.P’s: 15-8 Marbuzet (GB), 9-4 Zephlyn (IRE), 4-1 Cascade Hall (IRE), 5-1 Inspire Hope (IRE)

Marbuzet bumped into an improver when filling the runner-up spot at Redcar last time out and Tim Easterby’s charge is of interest from an unchanged mark. Zephlyn was on target over the extended 2m at Newcastle in March and that proven stamina is to his advantage, for all that earlier turf efforts will need to be improved upon. With that in mind, a chance is taken on INSPIRE HOPE

Completely unexposed on the Flat, she doesn’t look overburdened by an opening mark of 66, though it is the step up in trip that could hold the key.
