Welcome to Royal Ascot Trials Day presented by Eventmasters, our first Flat fixture of 2025.
This Flat season, we are thrilled to offer record prize money of almost £15 million across our 17 fixtures, excluding the industry-owned QIPCO British Champions Day which itself will be a record £4.35m.
The prize fund for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes has been increased to £1.5 million this year and it will be the richest race ever run at Ascot. At Royal Ascot no race will be run for less than £110,000 and all Group 1 races will be worth a minimum of £650,000
This raceday always gives key insights into what could happen here at the Royal Meeting. Last year, Docklands and Maljoom finished second and third in the Paradise Stakes before filling the same places in the Queen Anne Stakes while Jasour, winner of the Commonwealth Cup Trial, finished third in the Commonwealth Cup itself. The Longines Sagaro Stakes is a key Gold Cup trial as well, and today Coltrane attempts to become the first horse to win the race three times after victory in 2023 and 2024.
We would like to thank our raceday sponsor Eventmasters for their support, including sponsorship of four races on the card. In addition, we thank Longines and Darley for their continued generous sponsorship today. Our opening race, the Royal Ascot Two-Year-Old Trial EBF Conditions Stakes, is sponsored by Naas Racecourse which hosts its own Royal Ascot Trials Day on Sunday 18th May and we are thrilled to welcome colleagues from the track to be with us today.
We are delighted to be hosting our annual charity lunch in the Ascot Authority box with guests from Quest RDA, City Harvest, The Clink Charity and the Riding A Dream Academy in attendance. We are also pleased to welcome guests from Parkinson’s UK to our Windsor Forest Restaurant and bucket collectors will be on course if you wish to donate to this excellent charity.
We hope you have a fantastic day and look forward to welcoming you back to Ascot soon. Our next meeting is the Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% May Racing Weekend on 9th and 10th May, featuring the Victoria Cup
Yours sincerely,
Sir Francis Brooke Bt. His Majesty’s Representative & Chairman

Your guide to all of today’s races
The Royal Ascot Two-Year-Old Trial EBF Conditions Stakes (GBB Race)
This race is a five furlong conditions stakes for two-year-olds. The runners in this type of race are subject to specific conditions that often revolve around age or sex, or confine the race to horses that have yet to win above a particular level. In this instance, the race is restricted to two-year-olds which are EBF eligible.
PAGES 22-24
2nd Race 1.40pm
The eventmasters.co.uk Paradise Stakes (A Queen Anne Stakes Trial) (Listed Race)
This one mile contest for four-year-olds and upwards is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set at 9st 5lb for colts and geldings and 9st for fillies before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory, 5lb for a Group 3 success and 7lb for a Group 2 win.
PAGES 28-29
3rd Race 2.15pm
The Longines Sagaro Stakes (Group 3) (A Gold Cup Trial)
One of the feature races of the day is this two mile Group 3 race for four-year-olds and upwards, a race which can only be bettered by a Group 1 or 2. Many of the runners will have already posted form well above average and some may use this as a stepping-stone to even greater things. Initially, the weights are allocated on the basis of age and sex before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to lining up here –3lb to Group 3 winners, 5lb for a Group 2 or 7lb to those successful in a Group 1.
PAGES 34-36
4th Race 2.50pm
The eventmasters.co.uk Commonwealth Cup Trial Stakes (Group 3)
The second of our feature races, this six furlong race for three-year-olds is a Group 3 contest and will attract some of the speediest juveniles around this season. Unlike in a handicap when a horse’s official rating reflects the weight that they must carry, in a Group 3 all runners carry the same weight regardless of any previous form. In this case colts and geldings carry 9st 3lb and fillies 9st, although any runner which has already won a Group 1 or 2 race will be issued with a 4lb penalty
PAGES 38-40
5th Race 3.23pm
The eventmasters.co.uk 40th Anniversary Handicap
This is a five furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap In simple terms a horse rated 85 would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80
PAGES 44-45
6th Race 3.55pm
The Darley British EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes
The penultimate race on the card is a Novice Stakes, run over a distance of one mile. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career.
PAGES 48-50
7th Race 4.30pm
The eventmasters.co.uk Manny Mercer Apprentice Handicap Stakes
Our finale is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130

The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h. 22. Jockey’s name and photo If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.
Ascot would like to take this opportunity to thank today’s race sponsors for their generous support.

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.
The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces.
Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade from the crown of an adjacent mature tree
as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.
Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties
Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine at all meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys
The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
In the event of racing being abandoned, refunds on entrance money and car parks will only be made in the following circumstances:
a) Abandonment before the running of the first race – full refund.
b) Abandonment before the third or feature race, whichever is later – 50% refund Where the provision of hospitality services has commenced and the raceday is subsequently abandoned there will be no refund for the hospitality.
In the event of an abandonment there is no need to contact us, we will be in touch with next steps and any required actions.
The Horserace Betting Levy Board prize fund schemes provide for the estimated inclusion of £2,107,420 in ratecard and incremental prize money at this racecourse from 29th March to 22nd June 2025.
