Dr. Peter FitzGerald CBE FREng DL Randox Managing Director
Welcome to Aintree Racecourse, where today we will be celebrating the highlight of our year as the Randox Grand National fast approaches. Get ready for a thrilling day of unforgettable moments, as we come together to witness one of the most iconic events in the world of sport.
We have already experienced two days of unforgettable racing and entertainment, and that all culminates here today with the 177th running of The Randox Grand National. The race marks a cornerstone in the British sporting calendar and this year’s renewal looks to be one of the best we’ve ever had, with last year’s champion I Am Maximus, back to defend his title He’ll be joined by a Boodles Gold Cup winner, two King George winners, as well as a whole host of stars from across the sport. It’s a race like no other – where stories become legends.
At 11.15am, we will have the privilege of inducting Neptune Collonges into the Aintree Hall of Fame The 2012 Grand National winner is a gentle soul who has brought joy to countless children over the years. We are deeply grateful to John Hales, who was always committed to ensuring that Neptune was an integral part of the Liverpool community and Aintree Racecourse – even in his retirement. There could be no more fitting tribute to this extraordinary horse Neptune will be in the Parade Ring at 11.15am before participating in the Aintree Legends Parade, where he will be joined by Grand National icons such as Tiger Roll and Corach Rambler
At midday, we will celebrate Harry Skelton with the David Power Jockey’s Cup Presentation in the Parade Ring. Harry’s incredible achievement in winning the inaugural award alongside a remarkable £500,000 prize, is a testament to his dedication to the sport.
Next, at 12.20pm, the Punter’s Panel will take place in the Winner’s Enclosure, where fans will get the chance to hear from racing experts and insiders about the day’s races. Before racing gets underway winner of season two of The Piano Brad Kella, will deliver a special performance from the centre of the course We’re also delighted to welcome back Laura Wright for the National Anthem before the big race She will be performing out in front of the stands, so make sure you’re over there in good time to make the most of it!
At 12.40pm, we will hold a special presentation for this year’s honorary 35th Runner, Joshua Duckworth. Josh, from Aintree Village and a proud member of a racing-loving family was diagnosed with a rare neurological condition in November 2023. He is currently under the care of Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, and over the past year we’ve had the privilege of getting to know Josh, his dad Christopher, mum Hayley, and sister Eloise Josh has been a brilliant ambassador for the Randox Grand National, and we’re honoured to welcome him today. A very special wish also goes out to Eloise as we celebrate her birthday with her today.
After the racing, local star Craig Charles will take to the Red Rum Garden Stage to keep the party going. Don’t miss out – head over after the last race and get ready to dance the night away with one of his electrifying sets.
Finally we’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our sponsors, who make this event possible A massive thank you to Randox, our headline sponsor, for their incredible support and for sponsoring their ninth Grand National. We are also grateful to our official betting partner William Hill as well as Turners, The Ivy Liverpool, The Rosconn Group and Weatherbys for their continued contributions.
We would also like to thank all of our hugely valued racegoers who are here today and for your ongoing support.
Today we gather to celebrate history, tradition, and the thrill of racing. So, sit back, enjoy the spectacle, and get ready for a day filled with excitement, as we create new legends and cherish old ones. Welcome to Aintree – where stories become legends!

Aintree welcomes back 5 legendary past Grand National winners to its popular Parade of Champions this year, along with 3 heroes who performed well in numerous Grand Nationals. These favourites will appear in the Parade Ring at 12.00pm.
Aintree Racecourse would like to thank all the owners and connections of these great heroes for making this annual parade possible each year.
(GRAND NATIONAL WINNER 2009)
Twenty-five years young ‘Monnie’ spends his time retired in the fields at Sarah McQueen’s point-topoint and livery yard in Herefordshire. He is still owned by Vida Bingham but Sarah looked after him throughout his racing career and has never left his side since before he won the National. She still describes him as a ‘true diva’ who believes he is only four years old - and he certainly keeps everyone on their toes. If ever there is any chaos, Monnie is normally at the heart of it, but he loves coming back to Aintree
(GRAND NATIONAL WINNER 2012)
‘Nipper’ is now 24 and lives his life out in the Shropshire fields with best friends Azertyuiop and Al Ferof - all three of them great favourites of the late John Hales. In February he was guest of honour at the Grand National Weights Lunch in Liverpool city centre and also attended the funeral of his owner In addition, he makes his ever-popular annual visit to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, where he is fantastic with the kids. He is the perfect gentleman - very kind, well-mannered and laid-back - but can also be very cheeky
(GRAND NATIONAL WINNER 2014)
Twenty-two-year-old ‘Pineau’ lives with Lizzie Brunt’s parents in Worcestershire, just down the road from Dr Richard Newland who trained him. Since retiring from racing in 2016, Pineau and Lizzie found each other and she has retrained him to hunt and compete in Eventing, Dressage Team Chasing and showing. This year he has paraded at Ludlow and Cheltenham racecourses. He lives out with his mates but is still enthusiastic about being ridden and, according to Lizzie, has a very wise look to him and is king of the yard
(GRAND NATIONAL WINNER 2018 & 2019)
A true crowd favourite, dual Grand National winner ‘Tiger’ may be diminutive but he’s a “real dude” according to those who know him well. The 15-year-old now enjoys a well-earned retirement out in the fields at his owner Michael O’Leary’s Gigginstown Stud in Ireland. In the past, Tiger has paraded at the Curragh and Punchestown Festival and finished third in the Racehorse to Riding Horse championships at the Royal Dublin Show. He particularly likes returning to the scene of his triumphs at Aintree and last year bucked and kicked throughout this Parade!
(GRAND NATIONAL WINNER 2023)
A very warm welcome to his first Aintree parade goes to Corach Rambler, only the third ever Scottish-trained National winner ‘Corach’, now eleven, retired last year but still reckons he is in training with Lucinda Russell - so she lets him think he is. He is cantered most days by his best mate Peter Scudamore and loves tearing around, overseeing the schooling of all the other horses. Though he also likes to be naughty, he is kind, steady and gentle with new riders in the yard, for whom he is the perfect schoolmaster Just as enthusiastic about things as he was in his racing days he recently attended the local Ardvreck Junior School speech day where he was adored by countless small children.
Blaklion, who is now 16, retired two years ago after running a total of nine times at Aintree during his career, including four Grand Nationals and the 2017 Becher Chase which he won. He lives back in Gloucestershire at trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies’ yard, and is now owned by Fay Shulton who looked after and rode him every day when he was in training there. His best friend is Fay’s other RoR horse Rocco with whom he runs around like a youngster every day, loves carrots and rolling in mud! ‘Lion’ has settled back well and flourished throughout the winter, and Fay intends having him as a happy hack as well as attending RoR events - but most important of all - just keeping him well, fat and happy.
Prof Caroline Tisdall’s 16-year-old great Aintree warrior holds the record for jumping the most consecutive National fences in history (242), having raced over the big green obstacles no fewer than 11 times during his career He won two Becher Chases and finished sixth in the 2017 National. Retired in 2022 and having spent some time hunting on Exmoor, he is now back being regularly ridden at David Pipe’s Pond House, reunited with Julie Bellamy who looked after him throughout his racing career Known simply as ‘VLR’, he is cheeky and playful, loves attention, apples, carrots and getting muddy but most of all parading at racecourses, Owners’ Open Days and at Aintree – which is undoubtedly his favourite place
Fifteen-year-old ‘Miller’ raced four times over Aintree’s iconic fences, winning the Becher Chase in 2017 and 2018 and finishing fourth to Tiger Roll in the 2019 Grand National. He now lives at Teal Farm Stables in Somerset and is ridden and competed by his owner Dido Harding, Senior Steward of the Jockey Club The two have been learning to Event - but both found jumping Aintree much easier than Dressage! In the past year they were placed in Hunter Trials and completed their first One Day Event in the Cotswold Cup at Pontispool. Miller is a headstrong character and particularly enjoys a good gallop on Brean beach.
Other surviving past Grand National winners NUMBERSIXVALVERDE (2006), SILVER BIRCH (2007), DON’T PUSH IT (2010), RULE THE WORLD (2016) and MINELLA TIMES (2021) are all enjoying their retirements in Ireland, as are AURORAS ENCORE (2013) in Yorkshire, HEDGEHUNTER (2005) and BALLABRIGGS (2011) in the Isle Of Man. NOBLE YEATS (2022) is currently resting before hopefully giving the Grand National another go next year
Sadly, the oldest surviving Grand National winner BINDAREE (2002) passed away last September at the age of 30

Find out the time of the first race in the racecard. Races are about 30 minutes apart and provide a natural focus for your day.
Visit the Parade Ring around 20 minutes before each race This is your chance to see the horses up-close Look for signs of their fitness and attitude A glossy coat, pricked ears and alert nature are considered good.
Watch at least one race by the railings, as close to the finishing post as you can get.
Jump horses are generally sturdier and bigger than Flat horses. Key attributes are endurance and strength.
Flat horses are lighter and more elegant for shorter, faster races. They use a different set of muscles, so muscle definition varies just like in human athletes.
On average, Jump horses race - or 'travel' - at 30mph.
Flat horses are faster at 35mph and the best exceed 40mph during a race
Today, we have two new inductees in the Aintree Legends wall located outside of McCoys at 11.45am:
At the end of 1975, Bill Davies, the then owner of Aintree Racecourse had effectively decided to run no more Grand Nationals. To all intents and purposes, the great race was over. However, at the 11th hour the Chairman of Ladbrokes, Cyril Stein, stepped in to sign a seven-year management agreement. The world’s biggest bookmaker was to run the world’s greatest race Mike Dillon was chosen to head the agreement and was the very first Ladbrokes employee to tread Aintree soil, when he literally climbed the gates to let his boss in and the Ladbrokes era began.
The Ladbrokes era encompassed some of the greatest ever Grand Nationals, including Red Rum’s record third victory in 1977 In no small part, it was the work of Mike and 2024 Aintree Legends inductee Nigel Payne that helped ensure that the Grand National was saved. Mike continues with his love affair with Aintree to this day whilst at the same time acting as Racing Advisor to ITV Racing.
A well-loved Grand National winner, in 2012, he claimed victory in the iconic race by a mere nose, cementing his place in history
After retiring from racing, Neptune Collonges has spent his time bringing joy to thousands across Liverpool and beyond.
Now 24 years old, Neptune joins the ranks of greats like Red Rum, Tiger Roll, Sir AP McCoy, and Ruby Walsh in the Hall of Fame For the past 13 years, Neptune has been a steady presence in the Merseyside community and a beloved figure at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and a fixture at events throughout the city. This is all thanks to his kind-hearted nature and the dedication of his late owner, John Hales, who was passionate about sharing Neptune’s greatness with the people of Liverpool.
More than just a Grand National winner, Neptune Collonges is a national icon with his contributions to this city and racecourse recognised today.
The Jockey Club would like to thank our Group Partners for their support in 2025

Handicap, the race was switched to the last day of the meeting in 2016 Run over a trip just longer than three miles, novices and lightly-raced hurdlers have a good record in this race Despite the long trip, proven stamina isn't always a necessity when finding the winner of this race and, in fact, those stepping up in trip for the first time often go well This is one for slick jumpers who travel well and may have a bit in hand at the weights.
Dan Skelton once again proved his love for this race as Gwennie May Boy gave him his third success in the last five renewals Harry Skelton had chose the favourite West Balboa so it was Charlie Todd who landed the spoils on the second-string. Thrown in off a mark of 128, he was shuffled back through the pack early but there was no denying his class at the finish. Picking up the lead three out, he soon kicked clear with ease to hose up by seven and a half lengths. There was a scrap for second but it was Lord Snottie who stayed on the strongest to deny Dan Skelton a 1-2 as West Balboa could only manage third.
The past 7 winners had raced 9 times or less over hurdles

We are delighted that Joshua Duckworth, a brave and inspiring nine-year-old from Aintree, will be joining us as our honorary 35th runner in the 2025 Randox Grand National on Saturday 5th April. Joshua and his family have a deep love for racing, and we feel privileged to have him as part of our event.
Despite facing immense challenges, including a diagnosis of 4H Leukodystrophy, Joshua remains an avid fan of racing and has even had the opportunity to meet some of his heroes, such as Sir AP McCoy, Ruby Walsh, and Rachael Blackmore. Our relationship with Joshua and his family began at The Grand Community Lunch in 2024, where we first saw his infectious smile and resilient spirit. Since then, we have had the pleasure of welcoming him to the Grand National Festival and watching our bond grow stronger
As always, the honorary runner position serves as a reminder of the incredible work being done by Alder Hey Children's Hospital and charity, with whom we have been proud partners for 23 years.
We hope that Joshua's participation in the race will inspire others to support this vital cause and to recognise the bravery of all children facing illness or adversity.
Some top novice hurdlers have won this race in years gone by, with the likes of Best Mate, Yorkhill, Tidal Bay and Simonsig all successful in this race before going onto win some of racing's biggest prizes Given Grade 1 status in 2014, the Baring Bingham hurdle at Cheltenham has been a good guide to identifying the winner in recent years. Winners of this race need to show a lot of speed at the business end of the race and strong Graded novice hurdle form should be highly respected.

2025 marks the centenary of Double Chance’s victory in the Grand National. Bred for the Flat in 1916 at the de Rothschilds’ Southcote Stud near Leighton Buzzard, the chestnut’s ancestry was questionable, being out of Kelibia, though his sire was given as "either Roi Herode or Day Comet".
Like so many previous winners, his was an unlikely story on paper Having shown little promise on the racecourse he was consequently gifted by his owner Captain Anthony de Rothschild to an ex-trooper, Frederick Archer, with whom he had served during World War I, and who was just starting out on a training career at Malton. Archer was the nephew of legendary Flat jockey Fred and grandson of William who had won the 1858 Grand National on Little Charley. He hunted Double Chance and, recognising he had a flair for jumping, won two minor races with him before the horse broke down twice with leg problems. Archer then moved from Yorkshire to Newmarket together with Double Chance who, after a successful firing operation, won five more ‘chases.
Shortly before the 1925 Grand National, Archer sold a half-share in Double Chance to Liverpool cotton broker David Goold in whose colours he made his first and only appearance at Aintree, winning by four lengths at 100/9, beating no fewer than four past or future National winners and also that year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup victor This was the first time
the single-strand starting tape was used in the big race
The man entrusted to partnering Double Chance that day was the amazing Major John ("Jack")
Philip Wilson DSC The 35-year-old Yorkshireman had played First Class cricket for his home county as well as having served with bravery and dedication in the Royal Naval Air Service throughout the First World War He flew in airships, bombed German submarines and in June 1915 was responsible for destroying a Zeppelin at night on its base in Belgium when he negotiated fog and, by judicious use of his pocket lamp, fooled the anti-aircraft batteries into thinking he was friendly
He received the Distinguished Service Cross by order of the King and retired with the rank of Major in 1919, after which - despite a life expectancy given as only six months - became a well-known amateur jockey, riding over 100 winners and competing three times in the Grand National.
Fred Archer had particular affection for Double Chance and left clear instructions in his Will for the horse to be cared for by fellow trainer Jack Colling, who duly kept him for the rest of his days and reported him to have a mind of his own and to particularly dislike being clipped. He made a public appearance at Olympia’s 1925 London Food Exhibition and, until a few years ago, the Malton Brewery produced ‘Double Chance’ - their premium best-selling ale - named after the Grand National winner who was once humbly stabled behind the village’s Crown Hotel, locally known as Suddaby’s.
To celebrate the centenary, Jack Wilson’s grandsons and some of his grandchildren are attending the Aintree Festival this year
THE WILLIAM HILL HANDICAP CHASE (REGISTERED AS THE FREEBOOTER HANDICAP CHASE)
Another stamina-packed race that was given Premier status in 2018, novices tend to come to the fore The nature of the race usually favours those who have already seen success over at least 3 miles, as despite the track favouring those who may not entirely stay the trip, the pace means there's no hiding place for any in this race.
Below-par showings of a few of the market leaders left the door open for Cruz Control, who was proving a progressive chaser Backing up his win around Newcastle, Stan Sheppard rode them silly front the front to make all. The 6lb hike in the weights, in deeper waters, seemed to make little difference as he was able to dictate the pace to come home a ready winner at 9/1. The veteran Sam Brown ran well in defeat to eachway backers delight, while the strong 7/2 market leader The King Of Ryhope had to settle for eighth.
13 of the past 21 winners ran at the Cheltenham Festival
6 of the past 11 winners were novices
8 of the past 11 winners were rated between 131 and 140
Trainers and jockeys with some of the strongest records in the race over the last 10 years.

It may be worth taking a chance on IMPERIAL SAINT, who is a previous course winner boasting deep scope for progression over this trip The Ultima fourth Happygolucky commands respect, while Docpickedme is another key player. This Ladies Day at the Randox Grand National festival, Tony Collier will be proudly representing Prostate Cancer UK and helping deliver a lifesaving message to fans visiting Aintree this year.
“Hearing about my prostate cancer diagnosis almost eight years ago was a shattering experience Prostate cancer was scarcely on my radar. It changed my life You immediately ask so many questions, like will I be able to walk my daughter down the aisle on her wedding day, or see my grandson grow up? The following days and months were horrendous, with so many dark moments. I was terrified of what the future held.”
“Working with Prostate Cancer UK, and with the support of friends, loved ones and the local community, including my football club Altrincham FC, has been so important as I started to adapt to my life-changing news. To hear the Ladies Day title race, the Topham Chase, has been dedicated to the charity to raise awareness of prostate cancer is fantastic. And it’s an honour to represent Prostate Cancer UK together with my wife Tracey, who has been an immense support to me since my diagnosis. I’ve enjoyed so many amazing moments in the past eight years, and I carry with me a renewed purpose to make a difference for men, like me, and their families. Hopefully, Ladies Day at the Randox Grand National is another of those special days.”
Prostate Cancer UK’s presence at one of the biggest sporting occasions of the year will raise vital awareness about the most common cancer in England. 1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer, and the risk doubles for Black men. The good news is the earlier you find prostate cancer, the easier it is to treat. With thousands of racegoers attending Aintree Racecourse and millions watching worldwide, this collaboration provides a powerful platform to support Prostate Cancer UK’s mission to give every man the power to navigate prostate cancer, and give them the information to make the next step.
No jumps. No hurdles. Three questions and 30 seconds is all it takes to find out your risk of prostate cancer.
We’re committed to creating safe, respectful, and enjoyable experiences for all.
From the moment you arrive to the final cheer, we’re here to make your time with us unforgettable for all the right reasons. SCAN ME to find out more
Moved to the Grand National meeting in 2004, the Liverpool Stayers Hurdle was formerly held at Ascot It has now since been upgraded to a Grade 1 from a Grade 2 and was won in four consecutive seasons by the legendary Big Buck's Another over the three mile trip, stamina is the name of the game, with horses who have run at Cheltenham in the Stayers Hurdle holding a solid record in this race.
Absent since finishing a close third in the Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham, Strong Leader confirmed his love for Aintree to record a second success here in three starts. Keith Donoghue displayed his usual front-running tactics on the favourite Flooring Porter who had been placed in two previous additions. He could only manage fifth after losing the lead three out to the smooth-travelling Strong Leader and Buddy One Sean Bowen still had plenty of horse under him though and extended away by four and a half lengths at the winning post. Hddenvalley Lake was another to run a screamer in third.
Stayers' Hurdle winners are 6-8 since the race became a Grade 1
15 of the 20 had previously won a grade 1

Kitzbuhel is undoubtedly the most intriguing runner upped markedly in trip

Clear skies, endless roads, and the purest connection between driver and machine.
First staged in 1954, the Maghull - which like the Melling Chase and the Sefton Novices' Hurdle is named after the surrounding area - was handed Grade 1 status in 1995 A test for the speedsters, Sprinter Sacre and Special Tiara both won this race as novices before going onto victory at Cheltenham in the Champion Chase the following year Between 2008 and 2021, four Arkle winners took their chance and all four were successful and that contest is often the best guide towards this contest. With seven wins to his name, Paul Nicholls' runners are respected most here
RUN OVER ONE MILE, SEVEN FURLONGS AND 176 YARDS 12 FENCES TO BE JUMPED
Found A Fifty came into this off a brilliant second in the Arkle and that form was boosted when the third, Il Etait Temps, won on the Opening Day last year Despite messing around at the start, Found A Fifty put in a smart performance on his mount and made amends for the messy start, in the hands of Jack Kennedy. Master Chewy looked to have been headed by the winner 2 out but he made this one of the battles of the Festival when finding another gear on the run-in The pair were split by just a head but the winner was gutsy and got his reward. A bumper to round up the festival The best up-andcoming National Hunt horses come here to try and take Aintree glory and it promises to be another competitive race. A great target for bumper horses to round off their season, the trip requires a horse with speed, so will naturally favour those bred to have a turn of foot as opposed to those who will want a bit further in the long run.
