Birmingham Made Me 2012 saw the inaugural Birmingham Made Me Design EXPO, working with over 100 exhibitors at The Mailbox, Birmingham, showcasing what’s being made in the Midlands. This event provided new opportunities for our students to work with some of the leading companies in their field. Business Secretary, Vince Cable, praised the University and its business partners for their work promoting design-led manufacturing and economic growth. BIAD also impressed more than 200 guests at The Mailbox after staging its annual Graduate Fashion Show. The catwalk show featured the work of 20 14

emerging fashion design students.

Our budding entrepreneur final year students and graduates were also given the opportunity to jump-start their business by exhibiting their designs in a dedicated shop in The Mailbox.

‘Vibrating suit’ helps athletes advance A pioneering ‘vibrating suit’ created by experts at the University, could help athletes and other sports stars to enhance their performance, by providing live information on their physical technique, allowing them to make real-time adjustments. The project is being led by a crossdisciplinary team including Professor Gregory Sporton, School of Art;

School Interior, Margaret Street

Stephen Wanless, Faculty of Health; and PhD student Jonathan Green. 36

www.bcu.ac.uk/biad/art

Professor Sporton said: “The suit is designed to give wearers feedback about where their body is in space. It does this by focusing on key points in the body, taking relative measurements between them to check the user’s position. This data, much more simple to acquire and treat in real time than more complex motion capture systems, is then used to give the wearer feedback in real time about their movement.” The device has recently been tested by rising star Mimi Cesar, the UK’s third ranking rhythmic gymnast, and her coaching staff immediately recognised the suit’s potential in giving UK athletes a competitive advantage.

The School of Art has been a major player in developing the University’s profile and engagement with the city and region’s artists and communities, developing and supporting initiatives such as the artist-led galleries Eastside Projects, International Project Space and most recently Article (Margaret Street). It has well established links with the Ikon and strongly supports fine art graduate-led initiatives such as Trove, Grand Union, The Lombard Method and Crowd 6.
