We provide an unparalleled arts and academic education in a creative, challenging, and nurturing environment to a diverse group of students who are passionate about the arts, preparing them to reach their highest potential.

Established in 1987, the nationally recognized Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA) offers a dynamic school culture that enables students to flourish as artists and scholars. The school currently serves a diverse student body of approximately 2,450 students in grades 7-12 from more than 100 cities throughout Southern California.

In addition to offering a challenging college-preparatory academic program that produces high-achieving, motivated scholars, OCSA provides aspiring young artists with the opportunity to refine their skills and flourish in one of 17 arts conservatories. Each year, more than 200 concerts, recitals, staged performances, and exhibitions are presented at a variety of venues in Orange County and throughout the world, providing students with the unique experience of entertaining and inspiring thousands of audience members.

OCSA is a donation-dependent public charter school; no student is offered or denied admission based on financial capacity. The school’s rigorous academic education coupled with advanced arts training has impacted many students, molding generations of creative thinkers, leaders, artists, innovators, and entrepreneurs.

A Note from the Director “Oh I’ve never heard of it, what is that?”

This has been the most common response to our announcement of this production. From students and parents to donors and admin, everybody’s wants to know, what is Steel Pier?

Well, you’re about to find out. This show, at the outset, has a great premise. Dance marathon. Who is going to win?

Who will lose and how? Classic stuff. What we have come to realize over the past three months of rehearsal is that just underneath all that, something else is happening. It’s happening to the characters, to the show itself, and it might even start happening to you. This show is, contagious. It’s after you in way that we have been curious about and investigating together as a company. We’re glad you’re here to catch the fever dream of this story with us.

Many to thank and inadequate space to do so, but it must be said here and now that this show lives because of Maddie Young our choreographer and it gets where it’s going because of our music director Christopher Smith.

Without both of them, this is just a dream. Ms. Amelia Barron, as always, thank you for keeping us from sinking.

To the steadfast production team and the incredible production and design students who bravely run this show, we are lucky to have you on our side! Thanks to our families who support these students. And my heartfelt thanks to this cast, who have worked so diligently and brought enough belief into the process to build a show to be proud of.

BIOGRAPHIES Ryan Miller (Director) Directing credits include Familiar Variations, Something Rotten, Learned Ladies, Shaina Taub’s musical adaptation of As You Like It (2018 JRAY Award for Direction and Best Ensemble), Antigone, Pride and Prejudice, Charley’s Aunt, Peter and the Starcatcher, and Spoon River Anthology. Some of his Performing credits include Jimmy in Thoroughly Modern Millie, Jesus in Godspell (ACTC) and Oberon in A Midsummer Night’s Dream directed by the SITI company’s own Ellen Lauren. Locally he has worked with the Torrance Theatre Company, Coeurage Theatre, Shakespeare Orange County, American Coast Theater Company, and Pacific Symphony. Mr. Miller’s film and television credits include All Summer Long, Winesburg: Death, A Lady, When Pressed, and Sanity. Mr. Miller is the recipient of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Acting Fellowship, as well as the Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme Award for Artistic Merit. An arts educator for more than 14 years, he was awarded the Outstanding Orange County Educator Award for his work at OCSA in 2018. Mr. Miller holds an M.F.A. in Theatre from UCLA. Maddie BeAnne Young (Choreographer) is a passionate choreographer with a BFA in Musical Theater from the Hartt School. For the past 12 years, she has dedicated herself to teaching, with the goal of inspiring countless students with vibrant choreography and infectious enthusiasm. Maddie currently teaches at Orange County School of the Performing Arts, in both Integrated Arts and the Musical Theater Conservatory, as well as the Dance Electives Program.

Additionally, she serves as the Dance Coordinator at Yorba Linda Spotlight Theater Company, where she influences the next generation of performers.

Maddie aspires to continue her devotion to entertaining through dance and help all performers experience joy.

Christopher W. Smith (Music Director) currently serves as the resident music director of the Musical Theater Conservatory where he has music directed many productions, some of which include: The Prom, SideShow, Something Rotten, Broadway and the Bard, Les Miserable, Now. Hear. This., Gypsy, Evita, 9 to 5, As You like It, Footloose, 25th Annual Putnum County Spelling Bee, Jasper in Deadland and Xanadu. Christopher has worked as a music director, pianist and vocal coach throughout Southern California and has had the privilege of working with many talented artists, some of which include: Susan Egan, Megan Hilty, Cheyenne Jackson, Jessica Vosk, Terron Brooks, Jessica Lea Patty, Scott Barnhardt and Krysta Rodriguez. A few other highlights: Sweeney Todd (A Noise Within), Disenchanted (Laguna Playhouse), Westside Story (McCoy/Rigby), Les Miserables, 9 to 5 (Musical Theatre West) and Chicago (No Square Theatre & Yorba Linda Spotlight). Christopher currently resides in Mission Viejo with his wonderful wife Joy, and two beautiful children, Grayson and Amelia.

OVERVIEW The Hal Struck Musical Theatre Conservatory offers a rigorous, supportive, and comprehensive course of study for students who are passionate about the art of storytelling through song, dance, and text performance.

In each year of study, students concentrate on musical theatre repertoire, vocal technique, and acting skills through a curriculum that balances performance, content creation, and methodology. The conservatory places particular emphasis on developing healthy artistic habits, experimenting with styles of theatre, learning the history of the form, and the practical application of skills to prepare for college and beyond.
