THOMAS IDZINSKI

Southern California native Thomas C. Idzinski is a freelance tubist, conductor, and educator, currently serving as Principal Tubist of the Santa Monica Symphony and Catalyst Winds, and as Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at California Baptist University.

Thomas earned both his Bachelor’s (2017) and Master’s (2021) degrees in Tuba Performance from the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University, Long Beach, where he studied with Roger Bobo, John Van Houten, Gabriel Sears, and Dr. Anthony Mazzaferro. He has participated in masterclasses and lessons with The Dallas Brass, The Boston Brass, Sam Pilafian, Patrick Sheridan, Jim Self, Avital Handler, Beth Mitchell, Alan Baer, Tim Buzbee, and Øystein Baadsvik.

An active performer, Thomas has appeared with ensembles across California, including the Santa Barbara Opera, Redlands Bowl Symphony, San Bernardino Symphony, Meritage Orchestra, and Whitesuitmas Brass. As an educator, Thomas has held teaching positions throughout Southern California and beyond. He serves as Co-Director of the Wind Ensemble and Director of the Symphonic Band at the Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA), where he has been on faculty since 2016. He also previously taught brass studies at California State University, Stanislaus, and has directed programs such as the Wind Studies Camp at CSArts Academy and the Samueli Academy Instrumental Music Program, founded in partnership with the House of Blues.

Thomas is dedicated to fostering the next generation of musicians, with his students earning placements at institutions including USC, UCLA, the University of Michigan, and CSU Long Beach.

PROFESSOR JOHN CARNAHAN

John Alan Carnahan is Professor Emeritus at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University, Long Beach, where he served as Director of Bands and Professor of Conducting for 34 years, and as Director of the Conservatory for 12 years. Prior to his appointment at CSULB, he held positions at the University of Texas, Arlington, and Clovis High School in California.

A respected leader in instrumental music education, Professor Carnahan has conducted ensembles at major regional, national, and international festivals, including the Music Educators National Conference, CBDNA, the American Bandmasters Association, and events in Seoul and London. The Los Angeles Times described his University Wind Symphony as “…thoroughly disciplined and euphonious!”

He is internationally active as a guest conductor, clinician, adjudicator, and composer. His collaborations include performances with The Boston Brass, Jens Lindemann, Patrick Sheridan, and Eric Marienthal. He also served as a visiting professor at Hanyang University in Seoul, conducting acclaimed performances at the Seoul Arts Center Theater.

Professor Carnahan is a sought-after rehearsal clinician. He has presented numerous performance demonstrations for notable national and international music education conferences including the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Il, and the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles International Conference in Utrecht, Netherlands. His innovative and thought-provoking sessions on ensemble rehearsal techniques and the art of conducting are consistently well received.

As a composer, his works are performed across the U.S., Europe, and Asia. His award-winning piece …and the antelope play is published by Manhattan Beach Publications and featured in Guide to Band Masterworks. His music is also published by C. Alan Publications and World Projects.

His recent book, The Wind Band Sound: A Definitive Guide to Ensemble Intonation, is the first in a three-volume series for wind band educators, and it is now available through World Projects Publications.

Professor Carnahan holds membership in the College Band Directors National Association, where he serves as a Past President of the Western Division, The World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, Life-Member of the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association and was honored with membership in the American Bandmasters Association in 2013.

OVERVIEW

The Frederick Fennell Wind Studies Program offers a comprehensive, college-preparatory wind studies curriculum, taught by industry professionals and collegiate educators. Students in the Wind Studies Program learn music theory, history, and performance practice. The curriculum includes instrument-speci c master classes, as well as the opportunity to work with an inspiring array of high-caliber guest artists. In addition to performances on campus, students participate in numerous local and national music festivals.

Dr. John Reynolds is a highly sought

educator, clinician, and trumpeter. He holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in jazz studies from the USC Thornton School of Music, as well as degrees from San Diego State University and Point Loma Nazarene University. Dr. Reynolds is an active performer and studio artist, having shared the stage with jazz luminaries such as Jeff Hamilton, John Clayton, Bob Mintzer, George Cables, and many others. Additionally, he appears as a performer with the San Diego Symphony and other noted classical ensembles throughout California. Dr. Reynolds is a Lotus Trumpets artist. He is well versed in instrumental conducting, having conducted numerous wind ensembles, orchestras, and pit orchestras for various musical productions over the last 25 years. Dr. Reynolds is a consultant for the Jazz at Lincoln Center organization, adjudicating and performing as a guest artist at regional festivals across the country. He has won numerous awards, including Outstanding Jazz Alumnus of the Year (SDSU) and Jazz Educator of the Year (So Cal Jazz Society).

UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES

Students in the Frederick Fennell Wind Studies Program audition to perform in one of the school’s many prestigious ensembles: Frederick Fennell Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, and/or a Jazz Studies Program ensemble. These groups perform at local and regional festivals and participate in special performance opportunities, including international tours.
