BUSINESS AT MINES Today’s Colorado School of Mines students want to be innovators, entrepreneurs, changeagents and corporate leaders. Our world-class technical education is a start, but to achieve their professional dreams, Mines graduates need to acquire business skills.

THE ACADEMIC VISION FOR MINES@150

In fact, this may have been your career path. We’ve heard from many alumni that not understanding the language of finance and not having business knowledge can be a barrier to success and career progression. We’ve also heard about this business acumen need from recruiters. Today, industry and government expect that even entry-level engineers and applied scientists speak the languages of business and technology with equal fluency. We are answering this demand through an expanded menu of economics and business degrees and courses. Unlike those at traditional universities, our highly quantitative business offerings complement the rigorous, hands-on technical programs that bring students to Mines.

PAST, PRESENT & POSSIBILITIES Business at Mines: Established in 1969 Economics and business education isn’t new at Mines: Our world-renowned Mineral and Energy Economics master’s and PhD degree program started in 1969. Over the following decades we: • added the Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and an economics minor. • added a basic economics course into the undergraduate core curriculum. • established the MBA-alternative Engineering and Technology Management master’s degree.

2021: A new home for engineering-minded students with business goals We launched the Bachelor of Science in Business Engineering and Management Science in fall 2021 to give students the opportunity to learn and apply quantitative engineering tools in a business context. For working engineers whose lives can’t accommodate traditional graduate programs, we began expanding our online graduate certificates.

The future of Business at Mines We are positioning Mines to be the leader in preparing the next generation of engineers and scientists—the ones the world needs for prosperity—with the business acumen and critical thinking skills they need to flourish in today’s challenging business environments. Whether a student aspires to be a global company executive or an entrepreneur—or wants to bring business savvy to other career paths—Mines will deliver the possibilities.

Undergraduate Programs Bachelor of Science in Business Engineering and Management Science (BEMS) The BEMS degree equips students with tools for making data-driven business decisions, becoming effective leaders and adopting an entrepreneurial mindset. Students also choose two technical elective tracks: business analytics, financial engineering, artificial intelligence and machine learning, advanced manufacturing and technology management. Bachelor of Science in Economics Mines’ economics degree is grounded in math, engineering and the sciences to build leaders with practical tools to apply economics principles alongside science and technology. Minor in Economics and Minor in Business and Entrepreneurship Minors allow students from all Mines programs to broaden technical degrees with modern principles of economics, or business and entrepreneurship.

Mineral and Energy Economics (MEE) master’s and PhD program MEE degrees focus on economics topics in applied energy, mineral and environmental science that are unavailable in traditional economics programs, making graduates highly marketable and valuable contributors to industry, government and academia. Engineering and Technology Management (ETM) master’s degree This accelerated one-year program enhances STEM undergraduate training with contemporary business management tools, skills and insights. Combining core business knowledge and the latest analytics tools positions ETM graduates as next-generation leaders who can effectively create, build and manage innovative organizations. Online graduate certificates in Product Management and Business Analytics These online graduate certificates offer flexibility for working professionals and new graduates who find Mines’ traditional graduate programs less accessible. Graduate certificate in Resource Commodity Analytics By combining the most quantitative aspects of the MEE and ETM degrees, this accelerated program trains students in data and financial analysis for energy and mineral markets.

The ETM program opened my eyes to possibilities I never expected. What I learned helped me strategically position myself to participate in a leadership program at Lockheed Martin right after graduation, which led to my current position in business strategy management. Mines is world renowned for producing incredible engineers and looks to put those engineers into the highest levels of leadership throughout our nation. Having that engineering knowledge will take you a long way, but you must have business acumen to succeed in today’s world. The ETM program gave me that leg up and put me on my path.
