With the support of the Local Foods Purchase Assistance Program, we've collected of locally-sourced resources from fields, farms, and markets. Beyond our local food purchases, HACAP has also provided of fresh produce in our offerings. These items are more than just vegetables and fruits; they represent our commitment to providing the freshest and healthiest options to every family in our community.

In 1983, the HACAP Food Reservoir was established with a visionary mission. At its inception, it distributed a substantial 100,000 pounds of food to partner agencies. As we fast forward to 2023, we've achieved a truly remarkable milestone, having distributed an impressive 9.5 million pounds of food—a testament to our unwavering commitment to eradicating hunger.

Our approach to growth has been nothing short of dynamic. We've diversified our programs to address a broad spectrum of needs. This expansion encompasses partner agency distribution, the growth of mobile and school food pantries, and the establishment of invaluable collaborations with healthcare partners.

Throughout our journey, we've celebrated significant milestones. In 2001, we secured a permanent home, providing crucial stability to our operations. In 2006, we launched Operation BackPack, a pivotal initiative. By 2008, we proudly became a member of Feeding America, further enhancing our capacity to make a positive impact.

While we pause to commemorate our history, our unwavering focus remains squarely on the future.

We hold a profound vision of a world free from hunger and are steadfastly committed to realizing that vision.

Health + Nutrition Our commitment extends far beyond nutrition, as we are dedicated to promoting holistic well-being within our community. Through our Family and Community Health Alliance, we go the extra mile to assist families by providing them with vital information and resources to thrive. An example of this is our assistance in helping families apply for Hawki and Medicaid insurance, a mission that has gained particular significance during the challenging times of Medicaid Unwinding, when access to healthcare is more critical than ever.

In addition to this, we are currently piloting a new Maternal Health home visiting program with the aim of reaching vulnerable pregnant women and helping them overcome the barriers to good prenatal health. Furthermore, we operate programs like WIC and I-Smile to ensure that young children and families have unimpeded access to essential nutrition and dental care.

Beyond the work of our Health Alliance, our senior dining sites are not merely places to share meals; they serve as community hubs and sources of unwavering support for the elderly, ensuring their physical and emotional well-being.

But this is just the beginning of our efforts. We are dedicated to continuous innovation, research, and collaboration to enhance the lives of those we serve.

Our commitment to community awareness and health-related events extends our influence, enriching lives and strengthening bonds. These collective efforts provide only a glimpse of our multifaceted approach. Health and Nutrition are not isolated departments; they are intricately woven into every facet of our mission, enhancing the very essence of our organization as we strive to create a healthier, more vibrant community for all.

VETS + HOUSING “Homelessness is not a choice, but rather a journey that many find themselves in.”

Transforming Lives Working with our homeless population, particularly our homeless veterans, is an incredibly rewarding endeavor. It's the type of work that ignites a passion within us and drives us to overcome challenges to create a lasting impact. The sheer number of individuals who seek our assistance is overwhelming, and although our desire is to support all homeless individuals, especially our deserving veterans, it's regrettably beyond our capacity.

This year alone, we achieved a remarkable feat. We were able to provide safe and stable housing to 147 homeless veterans who were living in a shelter, on the streets, in a car, or other places not meant for habitation. This accomplishment is a source of tremendous pride for us, and it reflects our dedication to improving the lives of those who have faced adversity.

Amina and Yempabe

In 2014, Amina and Yempabe made the life-changing decision to leave Africa in pursuit of a better life in the United States. Shortly after their arrival, they discovered the transformative power of HACAP's Head Start program.

Through a referral, they enrolled their family in Head Start as they needed an affordable and enriching educational environment for their growing family.

Amina eagerly shared how the program's dedicated teachers made a profound impact on their family, with a particular focus on their youngest child, Dorian.

Amina also commended Head Start for its unwavering commitment to embracing cultural diversity, allowing their bilingual family to preserve its heritage and language skills. The program's regular check-ins provided vital resources, truly making a significant difference in their lives.

The journey of Amina and Yempabe with Head Start serves as a testament to the life-changing influence of quality early childhood education and comprehensive family support. Their story epitomizes determination and resilience, highlighting the profound and lasting impact of Head Start on families. HACAP remains steadfast in its dedication to empowering families and providing the essential care and educational foundation needed for children to succeed. Families are continually confronted with the challenging choice of whether to allocate their limited resources to pay essential utility bills or to buy food for their loved ones. This is where HACAP steps in. In Fiscal Year 2023, we made a meaningful impact by providing assistance to individuals through programs like LIHEAP, LIHWAP, and Weatherization. Our collective efforts resulted in a staggering worth of support delivered by our dedicated energy team.

Washington County

Nestled in the heart of Washington County, HACAP serves as a beacon of hope and support for the local community. Twice each year, during the months of April and October, HACAP orchestrates the Saturday Kitchen events, offering solace and sustenance by providing approximately 120 meals to those in need. It's here, in Washington County, that the true spirit of giving comes alive.

Amidst the festive cheer of the holiday season, the Christmas Adoption program unites local families with businesses, organizations, schools, and neighboring families, ensuring that the warmth of Christmas touches the hearts of 100-150 families annually. HACAP's involvement in Toys for Tots, extending its loving embrace to 40 local families, signifies the dedication to spreading joy in the community during this special time of year.

We recognize the paramount importance of education by organizing the Back to School distribution of school supplies, bolstering the prospects of local children in Washington County as they prepare for success.

Moreover, in the relentless battle against food insecurity, the HACAP Food Pantry emerges as a beacon of hope, with its astounding statistics: $114,544.63 worth of donated food, 74,285 pounds distributed, serving 324 households, 780 individuals, and providing 1,806 food boxes to those in need. The pantry's provision of meat, milk, fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, bread, and various essentials further underscores its indispensable role in Washington County.

Lastly, HACAP's distribution of Goodwill vouchers extends a lifeline to families facing economic challenges, ensuring that no one in Washington County goes without necessary clothing. In every endeavor, the Hawkeye Area Community Action Program's commitment radiates throughout Washington County, uplifting its residents and fostering a stronger, more compassionate community.

Head Start offers an experiential outdoor play area, providing children with a lively and interactive space to embark on an adventure of exploration through the wonders of nature.
