Classic Golden Ale

A beer that has been making history since 1871. Beer is all about authenticity, about history, about heritage. Today’s Duvel (Flemish for ‘devil’), is born out of respect for almost 150 years of rich brewing tradition. Way back in 1871, Jan-Leonard Moortgat was already brewing his beer with passionate craftsmanship, a large dose of patience and above all, a great deal of love.

“Duvel is one beer that Michael Jackson always included on his list of World’s Five Best Beers. He was also known to refer to Duvel as “Sex in a bottle”. BeerAdvocate: A+ / World Class – Rate Beer: 97%

Duvel, Belgian Golden Ale Duvel is indeed a devilish beer full of contrasts and surprising discoveries. Its golden-coloured appearance, delicate sparkle and refined, silky taste with complex aromas hides an 8.5% alcohol content. Lush aromas include citrus, apple, hops and yeast. Flavours of pale malt appear throughout, with strong yeast, hops and alcohol notes. The 8.5 ABV kicks in mid-palate, warming to the end. Thanks to the balance between its fine aroma and subtle bitterness, Duvel occupies a unique position in the rich Belgian Beer tradition.

Duvel Strong Golden Ale More than worth the wait.

Duvel is made using the finest selection of renowned hops. It is the subtle combination of Saaz Saaz and Styrian Golding hops that gives Duvel its full-bodied aroma. Duvel thanks its sophisticated taste to the unique bottle conditioning process: after 2 weeks in the “warm cellars” where a second fermentation occurs, the beer stays in the “cold cellars” for another 6 weeks. Only then is it ready to be shipped and appreciated around the world.

Food pairing Duvel’s rich palate of tastes also fits perfectly with the new gastronomy. Its rich, refreshing taste interacts wonderfully with Thai and other spicy Oriental foods. And yet it can boast sufficient delicacy and complexity to complement more traditional dishes such as cod fish filet or broiled lobster. Duvel’s balance between a fine aroma and subtle bitterness makes it the perfect companion for appetizers and digestives. It fits well with a wide range of cheeses: from hard Edam and cheddar to semi-hard Tilsit, from Italian Asagio to soft-ripened Brie or Camembert. Moreover, it can be served as an elegant, champagne-replacing aperitif in its own right.

The art of serving Duvel A unique beer deserves a unique glass. The tulip shaped glass allows a more complete experience of the beer: the bulbous shape releases Duvel’s heavenly flavours and aromas and allows a better division between beer and froth. The D-shaped engraving inside the bottom of the Duvel glass causes the beer to sparkle subtly upwards to its distinctive head. As the glass narrows towards the top, it helps preserve carbon dioxide and therefore the white, pillowy head.

The six commandments for a divine tasting • Duvel is best served chilled, right out of the fridge. • Use a clean and dry Duvel glass at room temperature. • Hold the glass at an angle. • Pour from a gradually increasing distance. Avoid any contact between the glass and the bottle. • Bring the glass slowly upright for a rich, full layer of froth. Ideally, beer and head divide at the height of the Duvel logo. Do not let the head come over the edge of the glass. • Leave approximately 1 cm of beer (=the yeast) in the bottle. Always store your beer upright in a cool, dark place, so the bitter lees can not spread in the bottle.

Thanks to the bottle conditioning, it is possible to keep Duvel for 3 years in optimum circumstances (a cool, dark space): the added yeast and sugars keep the beer alive and protect it from ageing. And moreover, the robust, brown Duvel bottle protects the beer from the bad influence of photo-oxidation.
