he first time we see a form of the word ‫( נסיון‬challenge) in the Torah is when Avraham is commanded to sacrifice his dear son Yitzchak: :‫ַוְיִהי אַחר ַהְּדָבִרים ָהֵאֶּלה ְוָהאֹלִהים ִנָּסה ֶאת־אְבָרָהם ָ ַוֹּיאֶמר ֵאָליו ַאְבַָרָהם ַוֹּיאֶמר הֵּנִני‬ “Some time afterward, Hashem put Avraham to the test. He said to him, “Avraham,” and he answered, “Here I am.”

The Malbim (19th century commentary on the Torah) explains that there is a unique quality to this specific test that was different than the others. A ‫ בחינה‬is a mere test to find out what is i.e. examining the nature of an item, whether or not someone is sick, etc. A ‫נסיון‬, on the other hand, is meant to challenge us to rise above our nature and to bring our potential out in an extraordinary way previously unseen in our previous reality.

It will take many years for us to fully comprehend the challenges our teachers and staff faced when COVID-19 forced us to pivot, in a matter of hours, to a distance-learning program. Yet, they not only withstood the test, they rose to a level we could only define as extraordinary. The ‫נסיון‬ brought out a commitment that our team had to being All In for our students - no matter what.

I’ll never forget approaching a teacher during the pandemic and asking how she and her kids were doing. Clearly exhausted, the teacher responded by saying, “I am doing OK. My kids are great. I feel for them, but they are staying so positive and taking each day in stride. They are inspiring me to give my best.” I quickly realized that when asked about her own children, she could only think about her students.

Being All In is not just a catch phrase at BMA. It is our mantra that drives all that we do. It comes from a deep love for our students and Jewish education.

This year, more than ever, we celebrate our remarkable teachers who went beyond the call of duty to continue to make sure our children get the very best during the most unusually challenging times.

We look back at the BMAzing moments we shared, the highs and the lows, and the many lessons we’ve learned as individuals and as a community. Together, we will be stronger for it in the years ahead.

ear BMA Community, Looking back at my first year as Executive Director at BMA I think about a year that certainly brought us many challenges to overcome, but also delivered many opportunities to drive critical improvements to our school.

Like many academic institutions across the country and around the world, the first and last day of our 2019-2020 school year looked drastically different.

We shifted from traditional classroom learning to exploring the world of virtual education, faced with the immediate need to innovate, adapt and refocus. In a year that felt clouded by the effects of a global pandemic on our daily lives, our commitment to the success and wellbeing of our students was unwavering.

Being All In for our students is not just about the lessons learned in the classroom. Everything we do at BMA is focused on creating an environment for growth, development, exploration and so much more.

Beyond education, my commitment to being All In as the Executive Director of our school is driving operational excellence and enhancing our overall infrastructure to promote a truly well-rounded experience for our students. The 2019-2020 school year certainly brought a fair share of obstacles to surpass, but the lessons learned from these uncertain times have also fueled growth and a promising future for our school. T

he 2019-2020 school year was like no other. We began the school year with pride and joy as we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the founding of BMA. What started as a year of normalcy turned upside down in an instant. While we began the school year in traditional fashion, we were forced to end it on a completely different path. Amidst challenges like never experienced before, BMA rose above, from in-person learning, graduations and school plays to remote learning, drive-by graduations and pre-Shabbos car parades.

Our pandemic pivot has taught us important life lessons. We learned that flexibility and collaboration coupled with generosity and kindness go a long way during challenging times. We know that life can create uncertainty and things can change rapidly. While none of this is new to the survival of the Jewish people, this global pandemic has challenged our resilience, energy and problemsolving skills. And like we have always done throughout our history, we have survived and thrived. And I suspect that this time around will be no different.

Mr. Leon and Mrs. Leona Brauser had a vision of creating a dynamic, vibrant, and thriving Modern Orthodox Jewish Day School in Hollywood, FL. Through their generosity, sacrifice, dedication, and unyielding passion, their vision has come to life and has shaped the future of our community for generations to come. To Leon and Leona, Jewish education had always been the most important value, and they hoped that their philanthropy would inspire parents to instill in their children the value of supporting Jewish education. While we physically lost both Leon and Leona this past year, the impact and legacy they left is unwavering and we are forever grateful for their contributions.

I, for one, feel strongly that one of the finest ways to protect the future of the Jewish people is through Jewish Day School education. It is the best way to preserve our Jewish heritage and insure the continuity and growth of the Jewish people in quality and in quantity. And that is what made me put my money where my thoughts were.

Learning

An All In approach to the children and school in the new enviroment

In partnership with Yehi Ohr, PreK-8th grade students participated in Jewish Community Services Safety Programs to learn about healthy interpersonal boundaries and how to report if a boundary has been crossed.

Placing social-emotional wellbeing at the core of education is paramount for students to flourish. BMA’s holistic approach focuses on the whole child. We recognize that success is not only reflected in academic achievement but also in students’ ability to manage emotions, solve problems, be empathetic and adapt to new situations. We cultivate a growth mindset and provide students with tools to become more self-aware and to develop positive relationships. During this particularly challenging year, we have witnessed our students’ resilience and their capacity to face difficulties with optimism and hope.

Integrating Social Emotional Learning (SEL) as part of our curriculum promotes self-awareness and empathy and teaches students how to establish and maintain positive relationships and how to make responsible decisions.

Creating Mindfulness Jars helped bring to life the role Mindfulness practices have in helping students self-regulate emotions and be more present in the moment, increasing their ability to focus and their engagement in class.

Childhood

Our weekly Shabbat parties and sing-a-longs are a core element of our program. When virtual learning began in March, this tradition continued with sing-a-longs over Zoom, helping to continue bringing our EC families together. Celebration with family is a major component of our Jewish life experiences.

Our Pre-K Chanukah Glow Party brought light and joy in a unique way to our children and their families.

Nursery 3 children experienced hands-on learning while gardening and investigating the natural world with their ‘pizza garden’ on the EC playground. This, and the beautiful butterfly garden planted by our Pre-K students helped beautify our school community. (top)

Elementary School ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE We encourage our students to excel academically in an atmosphere that fosters curiosity, creativity, critical thinking and integrity.

Our Coding CS Fundamentals computer science curriculum helps students with problem-solving, logical thinking, cause and effect, and computational thinking - reinforcing concepts related to language arts, mathematics, and science. (top left)

Kindergarten students took a trip to local food vendors learning more about how different foods are made and understanding their berachot through hands-on learning. (bottom left)

Grammar came alive when our 2nd graders demonstrated their skills in writing, editing and punctuating sentences while the “Grammar Police” were on patrol.

Our students participated in our annual Measurement Olympics, a rich journey of measurement, mass and capacity learning experiences. They took part in a range of activities from building legos to creating 3D spinners, and finding the area and perimeter for school spaces.

Our weekly Chesed Champ ceremony that recognizes students for acts of kindness was transformed with the shift to virtual learning. The new ‘Hero Edition’ empowered students to nominate heroes in the community who demonstrate kindness and help keep us safe.

BMA is honored to be an official Stars of Hope School, joining an arts program that focuses on transforming communities through art and messages of healing. Our students learned how they can change the world through art, compassion, empathy and hope.

Middle

School Our 7th grade students participated in the Cadena initiative, a project that creates awareness about problems that vulnerable populations are facing around the world from natural disasters.

BMA was honored to welcome former Israeli soldiers from the Peace of Mind organization. As part of their healing therapy, these brave young men travel around the world and receive support from other Jews. During their visit, they enjoyed sharing stories, singing together and playing a soccer game in the Florida rain. (top left)

Our 8th grade students participated in JFS’s annual Cafe Europa serving lunch to Holocaust survivors. Students also dance with, learned from and engaged with dozens of survivors. (bottom left)

To further promote real-work math skills, our students learned valuable life lessons from a curriculum focused on finance, budgeting, taxes and insurance. Through this learning journey, they studied the various ways to invest money as well as complexities of a personal budget and job searching. (top right)

In celebration of National Pi Day on 3/14, our students engaged in inter-disciplinary Pi-themed learning experiences like deriving Pi by measuring circular objects of all sizes, finding their birthdays in the digits of Pi and making Pi-coded bracelets. (bottom right)

Student Highlight

Hadar Setton As a zionist Modern Orthodox Jewish Day School, we educate our children through the lens of Tikkun Olam and we are filled with pride when our students make a difference, both in our local community and for the State of Israel.

Upon her return from a family trip to Israel, BMA 6th grader Hadar Setton was committed to raise Israel awareness back home in South Florida. Leading up to her Bat Mitzvah, Hadar partnered with StandWithUs, an international Israel education organization, to create an on-the-go awareness booth to educate and inform about issues Israel faces and global antisemitism. Finding opportunities to set-up her pop-up across South Florida, from outdoor festivals to Miami Heat games, Hadar successfully raised money, increased StandWithUs’ subscriber base and generated significant support for the State of Israel.

Hadar’s success was celebrated at her Bat Mitzvah through a montage of accolades from influential Israel advocates and leaders like Alan Dershowitz and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

As the pandemic hit, Hadar launched a website, hadar4israel.com, to ensure her important work continues virtually.

Morah Shira Miron Morah Shira Miron is known for the unwavering dedication, passion and innovation she brings to her students. Morah Shira integrates Judaic Studies and innovative technologies to bring the stories of Chumash and Navi to life, inspiring her students every day. Bringing unique talent and a robust skillset, Morah Shira views each child through the lens of their own potential and enables them to thrive in her classroom.

She is super creative and is always looking for new ways to help our students grow in their connection to Hashem and Torah. It is for these reasons, among many others, that Morah Shira was unanimously selected by school leadership as Teacher of the Year.

Program Highlight

Jewish Life In commemoration of Israel’s Chag Hasigd/‫חג הסיגד‬, a special day that is significant to the Jewish Ethiopian community, the Shinshinim proudly hosted Kasa Bainesay-Harbor, Deputy Consul General at the Israeli Consulate in Miami, to share the value of ‫ חג הסיגד‬and Ethiopian culture.

Torah learning was enriched and more family-focused this year with the introduction of Family Mishmar. Parents of students in Kindergarten, as well as 3rd-5th grade, had the opportunity to join their children on campus to learn and study the Mishnah together.

Thanks to the valuable support of the Jewish Federation of Broward County, the Shinshinim Young Ambassadors Program brought Israel education and awareness into our students’ lives through engaging programming, activities, and events.

RELIGIOUS COMMITMENT We provide our students with a firm foundation in Torah and Jewish law, a desire for a meaningful relationship with Hashem, and a love for Jewish learning and practice. We cultivate an enduring love for Torat Yisrael, Am Yisrael, and Medinat Yisrael.

Our COMMUNITY With the support of House Minority Leader Representative Evan Jenne, Teach Florida set up four Kosher food distribution sites — including this one on BMA’s campus — resulting in families in need receiving more than 1 million Kosher meals since the start of the pandemic.

Our BMA community gathered for a day of fun and fitness at the Color Run, raising over $30,000 for educational programming and resources.

At the peak of the pandemic, our students decorated and delivered yard signs for medical workers on the front lines.

BMA was proud to partner with the Young Israel of Hollywood in designing a Yom Haatzmaut car parade that featured several hundreds of families celebrating the State of Israel in the streets of Hollywood.

Following the devastating impact of Hurricane Dorian on the Bahamas, our BMA community came together to gather emergency supplies to be delivered to those in dire conditions.

A marquis annual event for the BMA community, the PTA Back-to-School BBQ serves as an opportunity to welcome both new and returning families back to BMA for the start of a new school year.

Grants The school year began with excitement and energy, supported by investments in additional staff, programming, and continued growth in student enrollment. However, the effects from the onset of the pandemic in March were significant and sudden. The administration instantly transitioned the school to remote learning and employment for all staff was guaranteed. Cost control measures were implemented and government funding was secured to support pandemic-related expenditures.

While expenses were contained, revenue loss was also minimized. Tuition bad debt was managed effectively and Florida state-funded scholarships were collected in full. Despite these challenges, the school fulfilled all financial obligations and concluded the school year with minimal financial impact. In the midst of an unprecedented time, we are heartened to watch with appreciation as our administrators, teachers, and students actively contribute to ensuring the continued success of our school.
