f you are like most investors, your advisor isn’t a favorite uncle who would never try to steer you wrong. Who tells you honestly how things are. Who has a proven track record of successful investing. A fortunate group of individuals, families and investors have found their coveted source of knowledgeable, time-tested, and completely unbiased advice. A Registered Investment Advisory (RIA) and fiduciary, Investment Counsel, Inc. is required by law to place client’s interests above all others, without any conflict of interest.

Get a sneak peak of the kind of insights and commonsense advice you can expect by reading Investment Counsel’s newsletter. No difficult-to-understand jargon. No glitzy charts. Here, you’ll find the information you need in simple, straightforward language on relevant topics such as these: Advisors and Brokers and Planners, Oh My! — What’s in a name: Financial Advisor, Financial Planner Investment Advisor and Broker? Ownership Has Its Privileges — Buy individual securities or funds?

Putting Experience on Your Side

Avoiding the latest hype infecting his industry, Investment Counsel’s advisor Chris Walker and his team adhere to a long-term, buy and hold strategy for investing. “We’ve seen trends come and go. Our practice has always bought individual securities we believe will perform well in all market conditions as well as minimize fees and taxes. Since 1929, when this company was founded, the buy and hold approach consistently provides client’s performance that meets or exceeds expectations,” says Walker. “We’ve never seen market timing or sector rotation schemes work.” Investment Counsel is not alone in their faith in the buy and hold strategy. This is how Warren Buffett invests his own money. “If we thought there was a better way, we’d do it,” adds Walker. Evidently, clients agree. A third-party survey revealed an amazing 100 percent client satisfaction rate and Investment Counsel retained 99 percent of all clients in the last 24 months. Investment Counsel gives clients the ultimate advantage… remember the favorite uncle? What if he were the one who not only gave good advice, but implemented your individualized portfolio and actively managed your assets? Because Walker and his team personally manage and monitor portfolios, your money manager is only a phone call away.

AQuest Wealth Strategies Advisors for Today’s Busy, Plugged-In Investors “CHALLENGING THE STATUS QUO IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART. BUT “THE WAY IT’S ALWAYS BEEN DONE” DOESN’T HAVE A CHANCE WHEN TACKLED BY THOSE WHO ARE DRIVEN BY A PASSION TO

AQuest Wealth Strategies’ staff is committed to the communities it serves. Concerned about the erosion of the middle class, Dr. Jason Van Duyn established the Wealth Planning Foundation, a philanthropic organization dedicated to raising financial literacy.

funny thing happened on the way to the 21st century. The financial services industries decided not to come along. Clinging to antiquated paper-based office processes and anchored to brick and mortar, a large percentage of financial advisors are conducting their practice the same way they’ve done it for decades. “The industry is resistant to change, due in large part to aging demographics. More advisors are over age 80 than under 30,” says Dr. Jason Van Duyn, CFP, ChFC, CLU, MBA – President and founder of AQuest Wealth Strategies, partnered with LPL Financial, in Sterling Heights, Michigan.

Get Ready for a Game Changer.

AQuest represents the next generation of financial services. Founded in 2009, it uses Van Duyn’s trademarked business process “Transition to Freedom™,” a fresh, innovative approach to helping financial advisors transition to the next stage of life. The process allows advisors to monetize their business immediately while having a flexible retirement date. The T2F process also passes through 100% of revenue generated by the book of business to the selling advisor during the transition period, which can last several years. Including this pass-through, the selling advisor could reap as much as twice the typical valuation for their practice. “We are fortunate to have an experienced staff that is far younger than the average for our industry. They eagerly embrace new technologies, such as cloud-based systems, that completely eliminate the need for paper, make information available from any place with an internet connection, and allow us to schedule virtual meetings with clients,” says Van Duyn who was one of InvestmentNews’ 40 top advisors in the United States under 40 in 2014.*

CHANGE PEOPLE’S LIVES.”

It’s Not Just the Digital Difference

Tech-savvy investors of any age and busy younger families with longer time horizons have driven AQuest’s growth from $12M in assets under management to $135M today. It’s not just new technology that attracts new clients, but a new way of looking at financial services. Van Duyn has assembled what he believes to be a Dream Team of advisers with diverse backgrounds and extensive expertise under one roof. Completely independent, AQuest has the freedom to offer a true open architecture platform. Clients are not limited in the products or services they choose and can opt to work based either on commission or fee, or a combination of both. AQuest has professionals with extensive tax experience, this allows the team to take a more comprehensive review than typical advisors who primarily look at securities. AQuest’s staff can go beyond the historic role of advisors to provide tax planning and guidance for challenges small business owners and highly paid executives face. “Our philosophy is to align all areas of a client’s financial world to work cohesively as we strive to create maximum tax savings and long-term investment returns,” says Van Duyn. Challenging the status quo is not for the faint of heart. But “the way it’s always been done” doesn’t have a chance when tackled by those who are driven by a passion to change people’s lives.

McCann Wathen Retirement Strategies Live the Life You’ve Earned “THE FIVE YEARS LEADING UP TO RETIREMENT INVOLVES A TRANSITION TO A NEW STAGE OF LIFE, AND THIS TRANSITION TAKES A GREAT DEAL OF PLANNING—BOTH EMOTIONALLY AND FINANCIALLY.”

re you thinking about retiring in the next five years or have you recently retired? If so, are you sure you’re ready to make the transition? “When you’re getting ready to retire, there are many things you need to do before worrying about investing,” says Mitch McCann, Private Wealth Advisor and Managing Director of McCann Wathen Retirement Strategies. “You need to consider the how, when and where of retirement planning,” agrees McCann Wathen Retirement Strategies Financial Advisor and Chartered Financial Analyst Eric Wathen. “The five years leading up to retirement involves a transition to a new stage of life, and this transition takes a great deal of planning—both emotionally and financially.” To help clients bridge both the emotional and financial transitions that accompany retirement, the McCann Wathen Retirement Strategies team looks at all the aspects that may affect a client’s financial position. “We do the math,” Mitch says. “We look at the monthly amount needed to maintain the client’s desired lifestyle and, if that amount exceeds what’s coming in from Social Security and any pension, then we create an income-based investment plan. “For clients, it’s the best of both worlds—income and total return potential for wealth accumulation.”

Creating and implementing plans to provide both income and total return requires a comprehensive approach and every McCann Wathen Retirement Strategies client receives their own unique investment policy. “Investing for retirement is completely different than investing before retirement,” Eric explains. “We take an income-first, total return approach. It’s not for everyone, but this approach allows us to achieve the expectation to grow portfolios that are robust and durable for a lifetime.” “It’s a simple, straightforward plan to create income,” Mitch adds. “What’s more, because we adhere to strict fiduciary standards, our clients have the peace of mind knowing that we’re committed to putting their best interests first. We even give each of our clients a report card every year, so they can see how their income has grown.” “We work with real people making real transitions. They’re retiring or they’re selling their business or they recently went through a divorce or lost a loved one,” Eric adds. “We understand that these are as much emotional issues as they are financial — and we take the time to guide our clients every step of the way.”

If you look beyond the numbers, what do you want from your retirement? That’s what the experts of Imber Wealth Advisors, Inc. would like you to consider. Your financial planning goals are important — but so, too, are the goals you have for your life. Imber Wealth Advisors Founder Jeffrey Imber, Ph.D., RFC understands that very well. As a practicing psychologist in the earlier part of his career, Jeffrey gained incredible insight into concerns caused or exacerbated by financial issues. He witnessed the stress, anxiety and interpersonal issues that financial insecurity and worries about retirement could engender. It was a significant problem—and Jeffrey wanted to be part of the solution. His response was the creation of Imber Wealth Advisors. Now, together with his son Jonathan Imber, RFC, also a financial planner and Investment Adviser Representative, Jeffrey is dedicated to helping clients consider, plan and enjoy their retirements. Using a client-centered approach, Jeffrey creates dynamic financial plans built upon personal goals, values, needs and resources. His goal for their clients is to help them achieve financial confidence, and support them in living a comfortable, stress free retirement. What’s more, he and Jonathan look beyond the investments

That was what inspired me to join the business. “Our mission is to ensure that your current financial situation is in line with your goals, objectives, and priorities,” Jonathan adds. “Developing a comprehensive and cohesive plan designed to help you achieve your goals and objectives allows you to worry less about your money and more about your enjoying your life.” “It’s a privilege to come to work each day and work side by side with my dad, knowing the recommendations we put in front of our clients has such a profound impact on their wellbeing and the families they care for.” Imber Wealth Advisors adheres to an unusually high caliber of client service. When you consider the strong legacy of compassion within the Imber family, however, it’s no wonder their team is so dedicated to understanding their clients’ concerns and providing the financial products and services to best address them.

Horizon Financial Family-Focused Financial Planning

T

he only things traditional or old-fashioned about Horizon Financial are their values: working hard, doing the right thing and being thorough. When you visit their office, there is no television in the lobby with CNBC showing the latest market drama — only a friendly, familiar face who has your coffee ready the way you like it. “We look out for our clients’ best interests and we understand their needs,” says Holly Gallagher, CFP®, CLU®, ChFC®, and founder of Horizon Financial. “We develop the kind of relationships that allow our clients to feel comfortable discussing the hard topics.” Achieving that level of comfort with clients, in fact, is the sort of dedication to service that has been a hallmark of Horizon Financial for over 25 years. Born and raised in the area, Holly and her husband are bringing up their two children on their 100-acre family farm and are committed to instilling the values that Northern Michigan provides.

“WE’VE HELPED PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS PLAN FOR EDUCATION AND THEN WATCHED THEIR KIDS GRADUATE FROM COLLEGE,” HOLLY SAYS. “FOR ONE FAMILY, WE’VE BEEN BLESSED TO MANAGE THE WEALTH OF FOUR GENERATIONS. “We’ve worked in tandem with our clients’ CPAs and attorneys to ensure proper tax and estate planning, and we’ve been there to help navigate the loss of loved ones. We provide them with support and financial solutions they need to successfully bridge these life transitions,” she adds. “Of course, we also understand that we may not be the best fit for everyone. If a client is seeking the lowest price provider or wants to beat a specific index, that’s not us. Price is only an issue if there is no value. “It’s impossible to outperform an index all the time,” Holly continues. “We can’t control that. What we can control is providing comprehensive goals-based planning and long-term

investment strategies that match those goals. Throw in some behavioral psychology and a positive client experience and you’ve got the makings of a meaningful relationship.” Discussing money, loss, health and family dynamics can be overwhelming. Holly and her team take time to listen, empathize and educate. What’s more, because Horizon Financial is an independent, fee-based firm, clients can rest easy knowing that their best interests are being represented. “We’re not tied to one firm or product,” Holly explains. “We look at all possible opportunities because our loyalty is to our clients, not any particular product or company sales quota. Fee-based financial planning makes the cost of doing business transparent, so our clients can be sure we’re recommending the best plan for them.”

Nationally Recognized Financial Leader Emphasizes Risk Management “BECAUSE WE ARE TRULY INDEPENDENT, WE HAVE THE LUXURY OF OFFERING CLIENTS ANY OF THE VERY BEST PRODUCTS IN THE MARKET. WE REPRESENT PREMIER INSURERS WHO HAVE PROVEN TO US TIME AND AGAIN THAT THEY WILL STAND BY THEIR PROMISES.”

or the second consecutive year, Joe Betcher, RFC earned the prestigious Line Leader Award from Ohio National Financial Services, one of the nation’s most highly rated insurance companies. The award is the latest in an impressive list of accomplishments for the founder and president of Betcher Financial Group in Sterling Heights, Michigan. The 20-year veteran of the financial services industry is a lifetime member of the Million Dollar Round Table and a qualifier in MDRT’s Top of the Table, the highest ranking a member can achieve. Betcher gives much of the credit for professional success to his clients. “As we’ve kept our promises over two decades, they’ve been very loyal to us. As a matter of fact, most of our growth is due to referrals clients make to their family members and friends. Many are second-generation clients.” As an independent advisory, Betcher Financial Group is free to adopt a no-pressure, client-centric business model. Recommendations are based solely on the best interest of clients with no conflict of interest. The team emphasizes educating and empowering clients to make their own decisions. Selling just isn’t in their vocabulary “We enjoy speaking candidly with people about problems of real life. We don’t pull out colorful pie charts, graphs and confusing industry jargon. Instead, we communicate ideas so they are clearly understood and our clients are confident with their plans,” says Betcher.

Certainty in Uncertain Times

Betcher Financial Group is a rarity in the industry. Unlike typical financial advisors who primarily look at securities, the Betcher team serves as a single source for a wide range of financial services including retirement planning, investments, estate planning, tax planning, and asset protection. They place a heavy emphasis on managing risk. “Investing in the stock market will continue to be a part of most people’s retirement plan, but it is often risky. Changes in the tax rate can’t be predicted. Health will probably decline with age,” explains Betcher. “Since no one can control the market, tax laws or health, we must control our strategies.” The Group’s philosophy is to protect investors from the volatility of the market, create reliable, guaranteed income throughout retirement, and help investors keep more of what they earn by reducing their tax burden. They tailor a customized plan for each client utilizing sophisticated risk management strategies such as life insurance, annuities, tax-favored retirement funding, income and wealth replacement tactics. “Because we are truly independent, we have the luxury of offering clients any of the very best products in the market. We represent premier insurers who have proven to us time and again that they will stand by their promises,” adds Betcher. “Lifelong and multi-generational relationships like the ones we have can only be built on trust.”

Main Financial Group It’s Not What You Earn, It’s What You Keep “AT THE END OF THE DAY THE RETURN OF YOUR MONEY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE RETURN ON YOUR MONEY.”

A

fter several years as an accountant, Jordan D. Main had become dismayed by the prevalence of bad or incomplete investment advice given by financial advisors to mutually shared clients. Well thought-out tax strategies designed by Main for his clients were being undermined by ill-advised investment choices. “Even highly experienced advisors unintentionally expose clients’ assets to risk,” says Main. “By rule, most investment advisors can’t offer tax advice. Few have had sufficient training or certifications.” Main formed Main Financial Group (MFG) in 2006 to fill the need for comprehensive and carefully orchestrated financial planning services. It is a hybrid independent financial services, tax advisory and investment management firm with five divisions: tax preparation, accounting services, insurance product lines, wealth management and retirement planning. Each area works in concert with the others to produce the best outcomes. “Your financial world is always shifting. The market moves up and down. Tax rates may increase, as could inflation. Health issues advance with age. Your goals change as you transition into retirement,” says Main. “We don’t know of many other advisory firms in Michigan with the experience to evaluate how changes in one area could impact the others.”

“This continuity is a significant asset to investors over time,” explains Main. “Too many retirees find themselves woefully unprepared and misinformed about a withdrawal strategy. Many financial professionals aren’t motivated to serve people with decreasing assets. What makes us different is that we’ve been planning for your retirement lifestyle from day one.” Key to MFG’s approach is a conservative investment philosophy that minimizes risks and results in more value. “Advisors are constantly comparing their results in terms of returns,” says Main. “We understand at the end of the day the return of your money is more important than the return on your money. Our retirement planning emphasizes creating a foundation of getting people guaranteed income to sustain their retirement lifestyle that will not be eroded by taxes, healthcare costs, market downturns or inflation. The unique business model created by Main has proven to be very successful. The firm now has two offices in Michigan – Brighton and Midland. A new office will be opening in southwest Florida in 2018. “We’re very proud of the growth of our firm over the past 12 years,” concludes Main. “But we are most gratified by the loyalty and trust our clients place in us. Referrals by our clients to others have been responsible for almost all of our success and is our biggest compliment.”
