On August 19, 2024, Drew, MS, came together for a incredible Community Meeting to launch the Drew Freedom Markers initiative!
We shared stories, honored our history, and mapp out a vision for the future. The energy in the room was inspiring, and the collective commitment to resilience and progress was palpable.
Educational Impact
By uncovering and sharing untold stories of the civil rights movement, the Drew Freedom Mark provide powerful lessons about courage and perseverance.
Community Pride
The markers celebrate Drew’s pivotal role in the fight for civil rights, instilling a deep sense of pride among residents. By highlighting local heroes and transformative events, they strengthen community bonds and encourage collective ownership of Drew’s remarkable legacy.
Tourism & Economy
The Drew Freedom Markers position Drew as a destination for historical and cultural tourism. By attracting visitors eager to learn about the civil rights movement, the initiative creates opportunities for local businesses, promotes economic growth, and helps sustain Drew’s vibrant culture.
Intergenerational Dialogue
Through storytelling and public engagement, the markers serve as a bridge between generations. They encourage conversations about the struggles and triumphs of the past while inspiring young people to carry forward the legacy of resilience, unity, and social justice.
A total of seven markers will be installed across Drew, each spotlighting a unique story of courage, resilience, and transformation.
Through events, programs, and storytelling initiatives, the project aims to engage at least 250 community members within the first year. This includes workshops, walking tours, and discussions that foster a deeper connection to Drew’s history.
The initiative is strengthened by collaborations with schools, local businesses, and civic organizations. These partnerships ensure the project’s impact is deeply rooted in the community and supported by diverse stakeholders.
The Drew Freedom Markers are not just a local treasure— they’re positioning Drew as a key destination for civil rights history. The project is already garnering regional and national attention, amplifying Drew’s historical significance and inspiring broader conversations about its legacy.
Marker Dedication Ceremonies
