New rides for 2010 In addition to the amazing 3D experience, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider Live! in 3D, there are several other exciting attractions and rides new to the Royal Show in 2010... The Mixer
Described by the owner Lew Osborne of Showtime Amusements as “like being in a washing machine, rolling down a hill on spin cycle”, The Mixer looks set to be one of the most popular rides at the 2010 Show. It’s ideal for families, and isn’t too extreme.
Carnevil Jamie Pickett of FJF Amusements says this scary new ride will make you “scream like you’ve never screamed before”. Show-goers enter the ride through the “jaws of evil”, before climbing aboard the Ghost Train for its journey past evil interactive clowns and monsters.
Haunted Hotel
Crazy Raft
Another 3D ride, with show-goers being given 3D glasses as they enter. The first of its kind in Australia, this multi-level dark ride has unbelievable special effects. Lew Osborne says “They add a whole extra dimension”.

Another first for Australia, this family-friendly ride has the effect of a raft on the ocean, going up and down and quickly spinning out. Owner Elwin Bell Snr of Bells Amusement describes it as “an exciting ride for kids, teens and parents”.

Childhood memories lead to Show success Showing animals and sleeping at the Royal Adelaide Show is one of dairy farmer Ian Mueller’s earliest childhood memories.
E
ver since Mr Mueller was a young child his family would decamp to Adelaide for the Show, exhibiting in the dairy cattle competition and enjoying much success. In fact, Mr Mueller’s mother, Dorothy (nee Pfeifer) started exhibiting Illawarra’s at the Show in the 1920s and 30s, establishing a long family association with the event.

According to Mr Mueller, who has been invited to judge the Illawarra section at the 2010 Brisbane Ekka, judges look for a cow with good capacity and flat dairy bone. “A cow needs to have a good udder and have the ability to produce large volumes of milk,” he said.
Strong national field expected
T
he Royal Adelaide Show hosts the second largest Illawarra show in Australia. The only breed of dairy cattle developed in Australia for Australian conditions, Illawarra account for approximately 2-3% of dairy cattle in this country. Renowned for
producing large quantities of milk, they adapt well to different weather conditions and have an excellent temperament. Chairman of the Royal Adelaide Show Dairy Cattle committee Mr David Fechner said Adelaide is the second largest Illawarra show
in Australia, outside International Dairy Week in Shepparton, Victoria. “With over $10,000 in prize money on offer, we’re hoping to attract exhibitors from New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia. We may even attract as many entries as Dairy Week,” he said.
“As with all dairy cattle, judges will be looking at the shape of the animal, legs and feet and the udder.”

Show of recognition F
armers will be given long overdue recognition for the invaluable role they play in our society as part of a new initiative to be launched at the 2010 Royal Adelaide Show.
“Food is essential to sustain life and, as our population grows, food security becomes more important. But our reliance on farmers and agriculture is a lot broader than just food.
‘Thank a Farmer’ will see goods and animals produced by farmers highlighted at the Show, with the aim of encouraging show-goers – particularly city dwellers – to consider how much we have to thank farmers for.
“Increasing the profile of South Australia’s agricultural producers is one of the Society’s key goals and we believe the ‘Thank a Farmer’ program will help raise show-goers’ awareness in a fun, educational way.”
President of the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society Mr Charlie Downer said the urban population is increasingly becoming removed from and ambivalent about all things agricultural.
There are also plans to introduce a ‘Thank a Farmer’ day in the future.
“Many people do not seem to realise the enormous impact to their lives, should farmers decided not to farm,” Mr Downer said.
To complement the Thank a Farmer program, both Black Forest Primary School and Woodville High School will have display gardens at this year’s Show, helping to educate the students regarding gardening and sound horticultural practices.
Increasing the profile of South Australia’s agricultural producers is one of the Society’s key goals and we believe the ‘Thank a Farmer’ program will help.

No room for error in fruit cake competition
E
ach year thousands of show-goers flock to the cookery exhibits, keen to see the amazing cakes, biscuits, jams and preserves that have been entered from all over the State. One of the stalwarts of the Royal Adelaide Show cooking competition is the fiercely-contested Rich Fruit Cake competition, sponsored by Sunbeam Foods and Angoves Wines.
Junior Cook Charlie Kelso
F
or 16-year-old Charlie Kelso, entering the Royal Show’s Junior Cooking competition has allowed her to test her cooking skills and try her hand at new dishes. The Seymour College student took out the prize for Most Outstanding Junior Bakery Product at the 2009 Show, earning the title for her Pumpkin Fruit Cake decorated with fondant pumpkins. “I was very surprised but proud of my cooking,” Charlie says. “A lot of work goes into entering the cooking competition as it all has to be done the night before judging, but it was worth the effort.” In fact, Charlie took home a swag of prizes in 2009, including first place in the Jubilee Cake class and second place in the Pumpkin Scones and Gluten Free Slices classes.
Having entered the Junior Cooking competition at the Royal Show since 2007, Charlie began her involvement with Show competitions by entering the Arts and Craft categories in 2003. “I used to do art classes and that encouraged me to enter the Junior Art, Craft and Design section. I then decided to try the cooking and horticultural sections,” she says. “I’ve always liked cooking and I cook a lot for birthdays for my friends. I especially like to cook brownies and meringues. “My mum, Felicity, also enters the cooking competition and has won a couple of prizes for her
Brandy Snaps, Pumpkin Scones and Jubilee Cake.
Semi-finals are held at country shows throughout South Australia, with winners going on to contest the grand final in Adelaide.
“Entering makes us feel we are part of The Show.”
The convenor of the Rich Fruit Cake and Genoa cake classes, Mrs Margaret Rankin, says entrants must adhere to a set recipe and meet stringent guidelines regarding appearance and technique.
Her 13-year-old brother, Fergus, also competes, favouring the biscuits category.
“Fifty per cent of the points go on appearance and all fruit must be cut the same size, however judges also look at the flavour and smell,” Mrs Rankin, of Wilmington, says.
Naturally creative, Charlie continues to enter the Arts and Craft and Horticultural categories and, in 2009, won first prize in the Junior Home Economics – Recycled Garment category for a cardigan sewed from black lace doilies. The previous year she took out the same award for a shirt dress made from an old boiler suit.
“The Genoa Cake is based on the competitor’s own recipe and, though it’s desirable the fruit be uniform, it doesn’t have to be as precise.”
Though she is planning to scale back her entries in 2010 due to study commitments, she is looking forward to entering. “I’m thinking of entering the vegetable cake category again, and maybe the healthy scones and quiche classes.” Looking ahead, Charlie says it’s likely she will continue to enter the cooking competition as an adult, but is still considering which career path she will follow after school.
Though Mrs Rankin has disqualified herself from entering the category while she is convenor, she has tasted success in the past, receiving a Commendation in the Rich Fruit Cake class several years ago. And, despite her convening duties, she still manages to submit up to ten entries in the jams and preserves and other cooking classes. Her husband, Bob, is also a keen competitor, entering all the jams and preserves classes. In fact, he was named the overall winner of the competition on points at the 2009 Show. According to Mrs Rankin, entering the Royal Adelaide Show cooking competition is a shared passion for the family. “It’s a family tradition – our daughters entered and our three grandchildren also enter a few categories.”
“I am interested in drama and music but I really like cooking and costume design – I’ll see what happens.” If Charlie’s creativity and enthusiasm is anything to go by, she’s sure to be a success no matter what path she decides.

He’ll be joined by Miss Zoe Lamour, known around the globe as The Princess of Pain, and Sideshow Pat, known for his sideshow-style antics. “This year we are proud to announce the return of The Space Cowboy – a multiple Guinness world record holder and world-famous sideshow performer,” Shep says. “He will be performing stunts that are guaranteed to shock, amaze and inspire.” See The League of Sideshow Superstars on the Superstars Stage daily. Return of the pigs
The 2009 Swine Flu outbreak is the only thing that’s stopped Jim Davis exhibiting pigs at the Royal Adelaide Show since 1961.
M
r Davis and his wife, Rhonda, run a 500-strong piggery with son, Greg, and daughter-inlaw Peta, near Murray Bridge. He has been exhibiting Large Whites at the Royal Show for approximately 20 years, and showing other pig breeds before this. He’s looking forward to exhibiting his animals in 2010, and says his property Aroora has been “pretty successful” at past Shows. In fact, Mr Davis took out several titles in 2008, including the Best of Breed Large White, Champion Large White Sow and Boar and Most Successful Large White Exhibitor – a title he has won for the past four years. He also fondly recalls taking out The Stock Journal Trophy for most successful exhibitor in the pig section in 1970.
16
The feature breed in this year’s pig competition, Large White is the most common breed in Australia. Having originated in England in the late 1700s, Large Whites are a rugged and hardy breed that is often used in cross-breeding programs with the Landrace variety. Large White sows are known for their large litter size, heavy milk production and good maternal instincts.
The feature breed in this year’s pig competition, Large White is the most common breed in Australia. breed are its white hair and skin, long thin ears, slightly inclined body and straight standing position.
“If you want a white pig, Large Whites are a good choice,” says Mr Davis, who sells breeding boars and gilts to other breeders and commercial pigs to meat buyers.
“Judges will be looking for good colour; at the animal’s skin, hair, head, neck and shoulders; and back, sides and hams which should be broad, full and deep to hocks,” Miss Wandel says.
According to the supervisor of the Pig Section at The Show, Miss Cheryl Wandel, the main characteristics of the Large White

The sound of pipers will ring out on Thursday, September 9, when the Royal Adelaide Show’s Dog Competition celebrates its 2010 feature – Scottish breeds.

“In terms of dogs, the Royal Adelaide is the second biggest dog show in Australia, after Melbourne, so it is very well-regarded nationally.”
“The breeds also encompass Golden Retrievers, Gordon Setters, Deerhounds and five different types of Collies, one of which is the popular Border Collie, a native of Scotland but a breed generally considered to have been developed, in its modern form, in Australia.” According to Dr McEvoy, the committee is expecting a big interstate contingent in the Scottish breeds section, particularly for the Dandie Dinmonts.
“Thursday is the main day for judging the Scottish breeds, and we’ll be celebrating with Caledonian Society pipers and Scottish flags,” Dr McEvoy says.
“Approximately 20 per cent of entrants over the whole dog competition come from interstate,
Dogs can be seen in the Dog Pavilion, open 9am until 5.30pm each day of the Show.
“Probably the most well-known of the Scottish breeds are the terriers, including the Scottish, West Highland White and Dandie Dinmonts,” says Dr McEvoy, an experienced all-breeds judge and long-time exhibitor of Irish Wolfhounds.

but we expect this to be higher in the Scottish breeds,” he says.
Guest international judges will include the very experienced Mrs Mike Macbeth from Canada, a second generation Dandie breeder and founder and President of the Dandie Dinmont Terrier Club of Canada, and Mr Raymond Greenwood from the United Kingdom. A founding member of the Golden Retriever Club of Wales, Mr Greenwood has judged this breed all over the world. They will be joined by Mr David Powers from Mexico, an international judge since 1985 who has judged at Crufts. Also in attendance will be leading animal photographer, Mr Michael Trafford, from Scotland.

Cattle on Show Popular Angus breed to star in cattle competition
O
ne of Australia’s most wellknown cattle breeds, the Angus, has been selected as the feature breed in the beef cattle competition at the 2010 Royal Adelaide Show. Chairman of the Beef Committee Mr Jock Gosse said the committee was very happy that the Angus Society of South Australia had accepted the invitation to become feature breed at this year’s Show. “Angus is a very prominent breed in Australia, so we are expecting 100plus entries from all around the country, including a strong South Australian contingent,” Mr Gosse says.

Having originated in Scotland,Angus cattlewere first imported into Australia inthe 1820s
“From a consumer point of view, Angus is one of the more well-known breeds – largely due to the breeds’ recent relationship with a large fast food chain.”
One of South Australia’s oldest Angus studs is Roseleigh Stud at Pinnaroo, owned and operated by Mr Ron Cowley, his wife Judy, son Mathew and daughter-in-law Julie. Two daughters, PJ and Joanne are also very involved in the Stud – PJ through the bull sale catalogue and Joanne in the Stud’s advertising.
Having originated in Scotland, Angus cattle were first imported into Australia in the 1820s. Today, they are found in all Australian states and territories, but are most common in the southern, temperate environments.
Recently awarded a Distinguished Service Award by the Angus Society, Ron has spent 30 years on the South Australian Branch Committee and has been at the forefront of the development of the breed in Australia.
“With more than $30,000 in prize money on offer, the competition will be hotly contested.

A long-time exhibitor at the Royal Adelaide Show, Roseleigh has enjoyed much success at the Adelaide Royal over the years. “Our stud started from the Adelaide Show in 1954 when my dad bought the first-placed Junior and Grand Champion Angus female,” Ron says. “Fifty years later we went back to the Adelaide Show and exhibited the Junior and Grand Champion Angus female. “One of the years we were lucky enough to win every champion of all the age groups.”
According to Ron, years ago the Royal Show was the only way to demonstrate what you were producing. “Eye appraisal was the key to good cattle selection, but in this day and age you also have breedplan figures for guidance.” Roseleigh Stud will be exhibiting Steers at the 2010 Show along with Loxton High School.

Strong field expected for sheep competition I
f you’ve visited the sheep pavilion at The Show during the past 20 years you may have caught sight of South East farmer Trevor James. A member of the Show’s Pastoral Committee for 19 years and President of the Australian Border Leicester Association, Mr James has been supervising the sheep pavilion for the first half of the Show since 1990.
Border leicester is the premier sheep materialbreed – producing goodwool and quality lambs In 2010 he’ll resume his role, as well as training up some younger members to take the reins in the future. Originally from Waitpinga on the Fleurieu Peninsula, Mr James has been based at Mundulla West, south of Keith, for the past 25 years. With wife, Judy, and adult sons Angus and Lachlan, he runs 5000 sheep,
primarily Merino, and operates a Border Leicester stud - this year’s feature breed in the sheep competition. The family also breeds Angus cattle and does some cropping. Renowned for their excellent mothering ability, high lambing percentages and ability to withstand tough weather conditions, Border Leicester is the premier sheep material breed in Australia. They are ideal for cross-breeding with Merino ewes, producing good quantities of wool and quality lambs for both the export and domestic markets. “When it comes to competition, judges generally look for structural soundness, outlook, good loin and hindquarter muscling and excellent wool quality,” Mr James says.

The 12-metre display will include exhibits of honey, including award winners from the many different classes in the Royal Adelaide honey competition. Robert Beer, President of the Beekeepers’ Society of South Australia, said the walk-through display will educate show-goers about honey production and the importance of pollination to our food chain. “The live hive of bees will be located in a wall panel visible from both sides, complimenting the production of honey and their importance to pollination,” Robert says.
“In the display there will be reference to the need for a well-maintained and ever active Biosecurity program, a responsibility of all levels of Australian Governments and the Australian Honey Industry.” One of the most important creatures on earth, though Honey Bees leave the smallest environmental footprint they make the largest contribution. “The honey bee is the vital link in the food production chain, pollinating our fruit trees, melons, and vegetables and our pasture crops, which are necessary for the production of milk, cheese, butter and meat,” Robert says. The live bee hive and interpretive display is at the western entrance to the Farm Expo.

The hottest showbags for 2010
Parents take note: the Socceroos, Crusty Demons, Dora the Explorer and Australian children’s TV program, H20: Just Add Water, will be the big names in showbags at this year’s Royal Show.
A
ccording to Samantha Atkinson, Brand & Product Development Manager with Benson Trading – one of Australia’s largest showbag operators – these will be the bags on many children’s wish lists for 2010. “These were the big sellers at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, and we’re expecting the same level of demand in Adelaide,” Ms Atkinson says. “In addition, the Cadbury & Freddo bags are always popular, as are the classic kids’ titles like Thomas the Tank Engine, Sesame Street & Barbie. “We’re also launching a showbag for Showtime FMX, who will be performing at the Adelaide Show. Some of the riders are very famous and have featured in recent tours for Crusty Demons and Nitro.” When The Show magazine caught up with Ms Atkinson she had just returned from a trip to the International Licensing Expo in Las Vegas, where she had been busy researching the latest trends in television programs and identifying the “next big thing”.
ABOVE Marcus and Samantha Atkinson of Benson Trading are bringing you even more exciting showbags in 2010.

“Market research is a huge part of what we do – I need to keep a constant look-out on what kids are interested in,” she says.
“I travel five months a year, mainly to Hong Kong, China and the United States looking for new ideas and sourcing content. “To get a bag developed with six to seven items, including sourcing and branding items and getting it all tested, it takes eight months from start to finish.” A former flight attendant for Virgin, Samantha’s jet-setting career is a long way from Benson’s humble beginnings, with her grandparents Muriel and Williams Atkinson establishing the business 55 years ago. “Initially they used to make rocking horses and then they went into showbags back in the days when they were sample bags,” she says. The business is now operated by Samantha and her father, Marcus Atkinson, however she says she has two sisters, Courtney and Nicole, looking to join the company in the future. “Three generations of our family have now worked in the business which is quite an achievement.”

IT’S SHOW TIME!
The Show to host national equestrian event T
he best riders from around Australia, including our own Olympians, will be at the Royal Adelaide Show on September 3 to kick off the Horses in Action events with the second Eventing Challenge.
Royal Adelaide Show Ringmaster Hamish Findlay said the event was expected to attract the leading competitors from around the country, with substantial prize money up for grabs.
Sponsored by South Australian’s Robert and Simon Rowe, of premier meat and livestock companies, Princess Royal, Standom and Gawler River Meats, the one-day event will feature dressage, cross-country and showjumping, with all phases gathering accumulative points.
“The day will start with a dressage element, after which riders will change into colourful event kit,” he said.
To be held in the Showground’s Main Arena – regarded as one of the best riding surfaces in the world – the event will feature a demanding cross-country course designed by internationally acclaimed Australian course designer, Wayne Copping. International judge Ms Margareta Wetterberg from Sweden will be judging the showjumping component.
“They will then compete in a showjumping round, immediately followed by a difficult but open cross-country course.” The Princess Royal Challenge will be held on Friday, September 3 – the first day of the Royal Adelaide Show.

CFS showcases new stand The SA Country Fire Service will be showcasing its new Bushfire Ready Prepare.Act.Survive stand at the 2010 Royal Adelaide Show.
L
ocated inside the Jubilee and Goyder Pavilions, the new mobile stand will focus on all South Australians who live, work, travel or holiday throughout the State’s bushfire locations. There will be interactive tools on display to allow visitors to the stand to assess their individual bushfire risk and identify which Fire Ban district they belong to. Visitors can type in their address and be shown the location on the State map via a pin (small red mark). To find out the fire ban district they belong to all they will have to do is click next to the pin.
With a new bushfire advice and warnings system introduced in South Australia during the last fire danger season CFS staff and volunteers will be on hand to offer advice on what actions they need to take depending on the predicted fire danger.
Leaflets and brochures will be available on the Prepare.Act.Survive message, as will a wide range of Prepare.Act. Survive promotional giveaways for both adults and children.
Travelling the country during the bushfire season needs to be done with extreme caution and vigilance.
These include bandanas, magnets, notebooks, balloons, pens and lollies.
It is important that all family members understand the new arrangements so they can make appropriate safety choices during days of high fire risk and during the event of a bushfire.
As well as helping the public manage their country travel plans and help them prepare themselves and their vehicle in case a bushfire does occur, the CFS Bushfire Ready Prepare.Act. Survive stand aims to further enlighten show goers with all bushfire safety messages.
Visitors to the CFS stand will also be able to order copies of brochures and the Prepare.Act.Survive DVD online. The Fire Danger Season generally runs from November to April, and during

What’s new in the Pet Pavilion? Old McDonald’s Farm

This nursery-style farm, complete with lambs, kids, chickens and ducks, will provide young children and their parents the opportunity
to see, interact with and learn about baby farm animals. Owner Paul Klinkert said the nursery would have eggs incubating and hatching during the entire Show, and that show-goers will be able to hold the chicks.

The Golden Grains Pavilion is an interactive display and learning area that highlights the different roles grain plays in our lives.
G
rain-based foods and fuels are displayed as well as the latest research and technologies used in the development of new cereal crop and pasture varieties. Visitors can touch, see, smell and understand the total ‘grain chain’ from paddock to end product. Each year the Pavilion showcases award-winning grains and pulses and has a number of exhibits from South Australian and Australian grain companies and research organisations. Grain is South Australia’s largest industry and is a significant contributor to the State’s economy. The Golden Grains exhibit plays an important role in raising awareness of the grains sector among show-goers, including the significance of anything that might impact or threaten the production of grain in South Australia. In 2010, the Golden Grains Pavilion will launch a new interactive exhibit ‘Ground to Grub - Growing Great Grains’ with funding support from the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC).

“I aim to teach people what to do if they encounter a reptile and how to minimise snake habitat around their home,” Mr Cheyne says. “We also talk about first aid for snake bites.” Having appeared at country shows and schools around Australia, Mr Cheyne says it’s important to teach people about wildlife conservation in an entertaining way.

South Aussie CHOC bigger than ever The Robern Menz stand is bigger & better
R
obern Menz is thrilled to have secured a new and bigger site on the western wall of the Wayville Pavilion and have commissioned a new stand to be built and revealed at this year’s Royal Show. Robern Menz chief executive Phil Sims said, “Our previous stand was a temporary one we had made each year but with our showbag sales increasing year upon year it was time to get a bigger and better dedicated stand to cope with demand”. “We’ve also recently released Giant FruChocs which have been a huge
hit and quite frankly, we needed a bigger stand to fit them in,” he joked. The Giant FruChocs will make their showbag debut in the Robern Menz FruChocs bag and will be a major feature of the Menz Mega Bag. Perennial Robern Menz showbag favourites will also return this year including the Crown Mints bag, Medlow bag, Choccy Bag and Robern bag. Look for the large orange and brown FruChocs stand on the Western Wall of Showbag Hall.
HEI! It’s a Hair Raising Success The fastest way to gain a great new look
F
rom humble beginnings at the Royal Adelaide Show, Hair Extensions International (HEI) embarked on a national tour of Royal Shows across Australia in 2010. Inspired by their success at the Show over the past 11 years, the Adelaidebased company visited the Sydney Royal Easter Show and Brisbane Ekka earlier this year, attracting thousands of show-goers eager to give themselves a new look. The good news for Adelaide is that the company will be back in the Jubilee Pavilion in 2010. Owner Andrew Elsegood says the company offers clip-in hair extensions and pieces, fringes, real hair extensions in a multitude of colours and hair products.
“Our biggest seller is the bright-

Take home another family’s showbags. These great value showbags are only available at the Coopers General Store at the Royal Adelaide Show (behind the grandstand).
“They normally last in the hair for about three months, although we occasionally get some customers that leave them in longer and remove them just before the Show, ready for their new colour when they come again. “We offer hairdressers the opportunity to work on the HEI stand throughout the Show, which gives us an opportunity to showcase the salons that we normally distribute to. It’s also a great team building experience and the excitement in the lead-up and throughout the Show gives us great memories and heaps of stories to tell our customers.”
