isitors to the Kytons stand in the Taste SA pavilion will be able to taste their new speciality flavour lamington range, before voting on their favourite. “Our traditional lamingtons are still by far the most popular product we sell, but we’ve been making raspberry lamingtons for the last five years and they are well-loved too, so we thought it was time to add a new flavour to our range,” general manager Sharon Sutton said. “The Royal Adelaide Show gives us the opportunity to ask South Australians what they think that flavour should be.” Visitors to the Kytons stand will also be able to see lamington-making demonstrations, meet their mascot, Larry the Lamington, see displays of historical photos and packaging and stock up on Kytons award-winning lamingtons. Established as part of a small catering company in 1938, Kytons Bakery has enjoyed many evolutions over the last 75 years, including 40 years in the Central Market, becoming the premier fundraising bakery in Adelaide for schools and community groups and now as an iconic SA food brand that has won multiple national awards for its hot-cross buns and lamingtons. “It’s a privilege to own such a wonderful brand as Kytons Bakery in its 75th year,” said Sharon. “We know the bakery wouldn’t be as successful without the support of the South Australian public, so we look forward to celebrating with them at the Royal Show.”

Delicious citrus direct from the farmer T

he Arnold family from Loxton will be offering tastings of their super-fresh citrus throughout the Show, and will be selling kid-size bags of mandies. Tim Arnold says the family love coming down to the Show each year. “We love seeing people’s reactions when they taste a piece of fruit that is fully ripe and fresh,” says Tim. “It’s also amazing to see kids try the fruit, love the sweetness and then bug mum and dad to buy a bag of fresh, healthy mandies.”

Fresh Citrus Direct ships direct to customers in most states of Australia from mid-May to October. “Our fruit stays on the trees until ordered instead of being stored in cool rooms or on display shelves until purchased,” says Tim. “It’s posted within 24 hours of picking, reaching SA customers only 2-3 days after being picked. “Our citrus is naturally ripened on the tree, hand-picked and packed and not treated with post-harvest wax, fungicide or gas de-greening.”

Amateur cook Bruce Hewett is hoping a recipe passed down by his late mother, Lorna, will give him an edge in this year’s Men’s Chocolate Cake competition.

T

he male-only choccy cake contest – the brainchild of media personality Amanda Blair – was introduced in the Show’s cookery section in 2011 to attract blokes who wanted to be involved, but didn’t feel confident baking against the ladies. Bruce, 63, of Glengowrie, says he’s competing just for fun. “I use my mother’s all-in-chocolate cake recipe, which has never failed so to speak – except when I make them – though we get a few successes,” Bruce says with a laugh. “My mother was a member of the CWA [Country Women’s Association] and used to go to the Show most years and help make scones at the CWA Café. She was also one of the first ladies to edit their Fingers and Forks cookbooks.”

The men’s contest requires entrants whip up their favourite chocolate cake (no mud cakes), with icing and decoration optional. The desserts must be round and 20cm in diameter. Bruce wouldn’t reveal too much about his mother’s secret recipe, though did offer one tip. “A friend of ours, who does home catering, said the best cocoa you can buy is a supermarket home brand variety.” This is the third year in a row Bruce is entering. “I’ve never won anything before, but I’m always trying. I’ll make three to four cakes in the lead-up, just practising to make sure I’ve got the technique right. My daughters [Amy, 32, and Beth, 30] laugh about it.” Bruce quips: “They’ll come in and critique the cakes and say ‘that’s a good one’ or ‘that’s a bit dry’.” Judging takes place on Friday, September 6. ree wine education sessions are held every hour from 1.30pm to 6.30pm by the National Wine Education and Training Centre (NWETC), giving show-goers the chance to taste different wine varieties, to learn about regional influences and food and wine matching. Organiser Marcia Burnett said the Cellar Door Experience, now in its eighth year, was a great way for both novice and experienced consumers to boost their knowledge of wine in a fun, informal setting. “Last year, over 2,000 people attended free educational sessions in our custom-built, open-plan, wine tasting area adjacent to the wine and food exhibitors,” Marcia said. “Three years ago we decided to combine food pairing experiences so a partnership was formed with Food SA. Now, as well as offering an excellent selection of South Australian wines – including some Royal Adelaide Wine Show trophy winners – consumers can experience food and wine pairing with cheeses, meats, crusty breads and dukkah.” According to Marcia, the Cellar Door Experience is a good starting point for those who have never tried wine before. However, with many people returning each year to build on their knowledge, sessions for more educated palates are also being run. “The sessions are presented by experienced NWETC wine educators who do a wonderful job of guiding people through the different wine varieties,” she said.

girls Barossa Valley dairy farmer Amy McDonald loves seeing the look on children’s faces when they get to pat one of her Jersey cows at the Royal Adelaide Show. PHOTOGRAPHY: JOHN KRUGER

12 Official Magazine of the Royal Adelaide Show | Www.theshow.com.au

“T

he look on their faces is priceless and something my own children take for granted,” she says.

Educating city kids and their parents about the dairy industry is one of the main reasons that Amy and her family, the Kernichs, attend the Show each year. “We consider it’s our role to educate the public about our industry and the animals,” she says. “Years ago everyone knew someone that had a farm, nowadays some people don’t even know where milk comes from.” Amy’s family property, Carcoola Jersey Stud, at Greenock, was established by her dad, Jeff Kernich, and grandparents, Albert and Priscilla Kernich, in May 1973.

“Dad (Jeff) worked for the Department of Agriculture as a herd tester and had milked many breeds of cows but chose the Jersey because of their docile nature, ease of calving and handling and their rich, creamy milk,” Amy says. “We currently stock about 200 cows and milk 80 to 100 at any time, calving three times each year to keep milk supply reasonably consistent.” Today, the property is owned by Jeff and mum, Erica, while Amy and her three adult siblings, Paula, Lisa and Mark, are all involved in working the property. A fourth generation of Kernichs are also waiting in the wings. “Mum (Erica) has become our chief babysitter for the seven grandchildren, especially the five under-five year olds,” says Amy. In 2004 the family made the move into milk processing and the label ‘Jersey Fresh’ was born. They now produce between 1000 and 1500 litres a day, with over half going into the Jersey Fresh range. “We found ourselves land-locked by vineyards and needed to get out or value-add,” Amy explains.

“Being located in the Barossa Valley we have a very rich food and wine culture so the concept was very well-received by the locals.” Their creamy, non-homogenised fresh milk and cream have won several prizes and are sold in shops throughout the Barossa, Clare Valley and Adelaide and at the weekly Barossa Farmers Market. In the coming weeks the Kernich family will be gearing up for the Royal Adelaide Show. “Carcoola has a long association with the Show and various country shows, exhibiting regularly since 1982 and missing only one Royal Show over the years,” says Amy. “In the early days Dad would go to the Show and Mum would be left home to milk the cows and look after the kids. We would catch the train down to Adelaide a couple of times during the Show, laden with eskies and spare clothes to refresh Dad’s supplies.” With Jerseys the feature breed in the Dairy competition this year, the Kernich clan will be exhibiting 14 animals. “We enjoy showing at the Royal Adelaide, not only so we can compare our animals and bulls and see how our cattle compare with others across the state, but also because of the social aspect as we often don’t see some exhibitors from one year to the next,” says Amy. See the Jersey cattle being judged on September 10 in the Dairy Cattle Pavilion.

Gentle giant Affectionate, loyal, intelligent and fun-loving, there’s little not to like about Bernese Mountain Dogs – one of the feature breeds in this year’s Dog Competition. PHOTOGRAPHY: JOHN KRUGER

W

ith their striking black, tan and white coat and stable temperament, these gentle giants originated in the Alpine mountains of Bern in Switzerland in the early 1900s. They were initially used as general purpose farm dogs, their calm, people-orientated temperament making them ideal for driving cattle, pulling milk-carts and as a farmer’s companion. Today, they’re the perfect family pooch, loving nothing more than being encouraged with praise and treats and spending time with their family.

14 Official Magazine of the Royal Adelaide Show | Www.theshow.com.au

“The Bernese is a very affectionate, loyal, faithful, stable and intelligent dog,” says Ros Catt, president of the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of South Australia and Royal Show exhibitor. “They make lovely family companions, and are wonderful with children and other family pets. They are easy to train and very willing and eager to please their master. “They’re also highly versatile, with dogs and their owners competing in the conformation show ring, obedience, agility, tracking, herding and carting. They make wonderful therapy dogs due to their friendly nature, constantly bringing cheer to others.”

Get out the pom-poms, fancy jackets and diamante-encrusted collars, our canine friends will be pulling out all stops for this year’s Dog Photography competition.

Ros, of Echunga, first fell in love with Bernese in the late 1980s, researching them for over a year before buying her first dog, a rescue girl aged 14 months. “I purchased my first show prospect girl in 1993, and had my first litter in 1995,” says Ros. “I’ve been exhibiting at the Adelaide Royal Show since 1993 when my first ‘show’ girl was a puppy. Since then I’ve been lucky enough to win many ribbons and certificates at the Show including Best of Breed and Best Puppy of Breed. “2010 was a special year – a male puppy I bred and showed won the Best Puppy Dog of the Show for 6 to 12 months old and then I showed his sister who got second Best Puppy Bitch of the Show for the same age group. “Last year I competed with three friends in the Breeder Group and came third in the Best Team Presentation – we hope to improve on that result this year.” In 2013 Ros will be exhibiting some of her dogs on Sunday, September 8, hopefully with some puppies, and then at the Bernese breed day on Friday, September 13. “If I do well, I’ll be back on Saturday, September 14, for the General Specials day.” A qualified judge and registered breeder, Ros has travelled overseas to attend breed symposiums, visit many breeders and to attend dog shows. She has also had the privilege of exhibiting dogs at shows overseas, including Crufts in England and World Dog Shows in both Sweden and Denmark. She says all breeds at the Show are judged against a ‘breed standard’, which is approved by the Australian National Kennel Council. “The judge should be looking for a dog or bitch which best meets these criteria,” says Ros. “They consider the structure of the dog, for example the length and angle of bones, the substance of the dog, their coat including colour, the way the dog moves and their ability to perform duties for which they were originally bred.” In recognition of the feature breed status, the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of SA will have a display at the Royal Show, where show-goers can talk to club members and meet some of the dogs. “We’re also planning to have a small carting demonstration during lunch-breaks of the dog judging,” says Ros. Best Overall Photo 2011, by Di Pudney.

P

art of the Dog Show section of the Royal Show, the theme of this year’s competition is ‘Dog or Puppy in Dress Up’, and organisers are expecting strong number of entries. Organiser Bob Hamdorf says the Dog Photography competition was introduced five years ago – initially for children aged seven and up, but later extended to over 18s. “The initial aim was to provide children with a challenge and a chance to learn skills in producing and exhibiting their photographs, with a chance to win a ribbon and recognition for their efforts,” Bob says. “We also wanted to introduce more children to the competitive aspects of the Show. “All entries, across the four age-based categories, are displayed during the Show, with prize winning photos identified by experienced professional photographer and judge, Mr John Mack.” Bob says the competition has gone from strength to strength, the number of entries doubling in 2012 and many show-goers seeking out the exhibition each year. “The quality of the photographs has also improved, and many entrants take onboard the judge’s feedback when preparing their next entry.” The winner of Best Overall Photo in 2011, Di Pudney, said the inspiration for her photo was her young dog’s birthday. “The theme was ‘My best friend enjoying fun times’,” she says. “That cheeky look on my dog’s face as she reached to lick the cake – it just makes you want to smile. “Photography is not always about being technically perfect, it’s about capturing those special moments.” See the Dog Competition photography display in the Dog Pavilion.

“I

have loved sheep for as long as I can remember and, ever since I was a little girl, I just wanted to see the sheep at the Show,” she says. Today, Charlotte runs ‘Illawong Texel’ at Parawa on the Fleurieu Peninsula, providing prime lamb to the restaurant trade and quality butchers. “Texel lamb has a better flavour, less fat and a much finer texture than other meat breeds,” says Charlotte. “It’s also high in protein, iron and omega 3 – chefs love it.”

16 Official Magazine of the Royal Adelaide Show | Www.theshow.com.au

One of two feature breeds in the sheep section at the 2013 Royal Adelaide Show, Texels take their name from the Isle of Texel in North Holland, where they originated. They’re a relatively new breed in Australia, first introduced in 1993. “They are a robust, compact sheep that is very muscly and low maintenance,” says Charlotte. “The ewes lamb quite easily due to their small birth size, but they grow quickly reaching nearly 40 kilograms in nine to ten weeks.

“I chose Texels because I could see that they could produce more meat, they are a high yielding meat sheep – when boned out they have 20% more meat than other breeds.” A regular exhibitor at the Royal Adelaide Show, Charlotte currently runs around 200 stud ewes, Texel and Poll Dorset, along with 2000 flock ewes of which 1000 ewes are Texel X. They are grass-fed on the rolling hills between Victor Harbor and Cape Jervis on her 1600-acre property. She’ll be taking around 20 Texels, rams and ewes, to the Royal Adelaide this year to exhibit and possibly sell. “Because our Texels are grass-fed, not grain-fed, their appearance doesn’t change dramatically after we sell them,” she says. “People love them when they buy them because you buy what you see – there are no surprises as with some grain-fed show sheep.” See the Texels being judged in the Sheep Pavilion on September 7.

ith its dark brown face and ears, thick dense wool and muscular frame, the Hampshire Down is a favourite not only with lifestyle farmers, who keep the genetics of the breed going, but with serious prime lamb producers in some areas. This sturdy, attractive sheep was introduced to Australia in 1855, reaching its peak in the 1920s when national flock numbers reached 20,000. Peter Button, of Ramsay Park at Minlaton, has a soft spot for the breed, having run a Hampshire Down prime lamb stud from 1994 until earlier this year. “Heritage breeds like Hampshire Down were brought out to Australia in the 1800s by the early settlers,” he said. “Some of the breeds had a huge influence on the development of the sheep and wool industries, and have since been used to develop breeds specifically tailored to Australian conditions like Poll Dorsets and White Suffolks.” “As a breed the Hampshire Down has excellent carcass quality and is easy lambing,” explains Peter. “They also have the ability to hang on in tough conditions.” With Heritage breeds, which includes including Hampshire Downs, Romneys, Cheviots, Southdowns, Dorset Horns and Ryelands, and Texels the feature breeds in the sheep section this year, Peter will be bringing a small team of Hampshire Downs to show at the Adelaide Royal. “Some of the heritage breeds aren’t very common in Australia, and many owners are lifestyle farmers who are endeavouring to maintain these older breeds for the future,” he said.

However, despite their scarcity, Peter says the heritage breeds are popular with show-goers, giving them the opportunity to see breeds popular in days gone by. “They’re a bit different to what people normally see and they’re quite attractive, so people like to stop and chat about them,” he says. With its Hampshire Down flock sold, Ramsay Park is now focusing on the development of its Hampshire/Suffolk composite breed, as well as its existing White Suffolk flock. “We are trying to create a cleaner pointed sheep but with the prime quality carcass of the Hampshire,” Peter says. “We’re now into our third year of lambs and the feedback from buyers has been good.” Peter, who runs Ramsay Park with his wife Julie, says he’s looking forward to showing the last of his Hampshire Downs at the Royal Show. “It’s the only time I enjoy coming to Adelaide,” he jokes. “Seriously, it’s great being able to catch up with friends and stud breeders from all over the state, and it’s good for us to benchmark and compare our sheep with the rest of the country. We love being involved.” Sponsored by Rabobank, the Heritage Breed section has $10,000 in prize money up for grabs and is expected to attract over 200 entries. New ringmaster made for the job

When Sue Ryan competed in the Under 12 Girls’ Bun Race in the 1960s, little did she know she would one day become Ringmaster of the Royal Adelaide Show. PHOTOGRAPHY: JOHN KRUGER

18 Official Magazine of the Royal Adelaide Show | Www.theshow.com.au

“I

first competed in the Royal Adelaide Show when I was ten and I had a nice pony hack that got some ribbons,” she remembers. “My first actual competition was the bun race – there were finger buns strung from a line about eight feet above the track in front of the Ringmaster’s Office,” she said. “By the time I’d gone through the heats and a semifinal to the final, I don’t think I needed to be fed for a couple of days.” Today Sue is gearing up for her role as Ringmaster of the 2013 Royal Show, the first female to be awarded the position. She’ll be responsible for the smooth running of the Main Arena, including the horse competitions, grand parades and all displays, from early morning until the night-time entertainment commences. “The Ringmaster’s office is perfectly located, giving an unimpeded view of the arena and enabling the Ringmaster to monitor the movement of horses to and from the exercise ring,” says Sue, who also works as a relief teacher. “The best horses and riders in Australia come to Adelaide to compete, so the Ringmaster’s office is the best seat in the house.” It’s an exciting achievement for Sue, who lives on

a property at Mount Pleasant with her husband, Trevor, and fitting recognition for someone who has been involved with the Royal Adelaide Show for the majority of her life. “I was born into a horsey family,” says Sue. “Both my parents – Jim and Barbara Munro – had fathers who were involved with racehorses, my mother had show horses and my father rode in shows and then played polo for some years. “My main interest by the time I was about 15 was showjumping, and I was lucky enough to win at the Royal Show in jumping, novelties, and one year was Reserve Champion Intermediate Lady Rider. “My parents rode at the Royal Show, and so I was very aware of the Show from a young age. I loved the time spent around the stables and I used to love the sideshows – especially the Gee Whiz and the shooting galleries.” Sue’s involvement as an organiser of the horse competition started in 1991, when she assisted the Chief Course Designer in the Jumping ring and later became a General Steward.

Ringmaster when Hamish Findlay retired, it would be an understatement to say I was astounded,” she said. “The thought took quite some getting used to, but I have great support from three former Ringmasters, two of whom are still on the committee, and one who spends Show week helping us in the horse section. “The Horse Committee members work together like a well-oiled machine, and everyone is supportive.” Though she hasn’t competed at shows since 2007, Sue is heavily involved in the administration of jumping and is accredited by the Federation Equestre Internationale as an International Judge and Course Designer – the only Australian to have an international rank in both categories. But, for now, her attention is firmly focused on the first Friday in September. “I just love my involvement with the Royal Show,” says Sue. “As a child I looked forward to it for 51 weeks of the year, and that hasn’t changed. “Adelaide Royal has a fabulous family feel to it, a great feeling of spirit, and we all pull together to put on a wonderful show.”

“I joined the committee in 2001, and when I was approached in 2011 about taking on the Deputy Chair role, with the view to becoming Chair and

relate a lot of things to the students, to do with animal health, animal nutrition, and breeding.”

“We pride ourselves on taking animals to the Show that are placid and tame,” Bob says.

Any students interested in the program are able to participate.

“A lot of attention is placed on getting animals used to a diversity of situations. These cattle need to be able to cope with kids laughing, mums with pushers loaded up with showbags and even fireworks. “We walk them everywhere throughout the school, on the ovals, on the bitumen, concrete and gravel. They’ll shy at the surface when they are first introduced but they adapt. “Our cattle don’t even panic with the fireworks - we put it down to the kids belting balls into the hockey goals at school.” Bob says Faith Lutheran College has been involved in the led steer program since 1986. “It was a brilliant stroke of genius to get schools involved at Show level,” Bob says. “With agriculture as a subject, the major goal is to learn where food and fibre come from and how important food and fibre is to Australia. “The led steer program is a great avenue to be able to

At Faith, 20 students from year 8 to 12 prepare five animals for the Royal Adelaide Show.

Students assist with leading cattle by the halter, daily feeding with grain rations, tethering for a few hours each day, weighing animals weekly to monitor growth rates, doing all grooming and preparation of animals leading up to the Show and preparing tack equipment for showing animals. Bob says popularity of the School Led Steer competition has increased dramatically in recent years, with a larger number and higher quality of exhibits. At Faith, students tend to work with one or two particular animals and develop a real ownership of the program.

Above: Jack Liersch and Kahlia Jenke with 600 kilogram Limousine steer, Pebbly Range. “Working with the animals and seeing them progress throughout the year, and being able to be proud of the final product come Show-time is definitely a great achievement,” says Kahlia. “It’s also good watching the progression of the younger students and being able to learn new skills which I can use in a possible career path. And you get to meet lots of different people, form new friendships and learn new skills – overall it’s a great experience.” Faith Lutheran College has won seven grand champion titles, including the Grand Champion Led Steer in 2012. Bob attributes the school’s success to the generosity of cattle breeders in providing the College with quality animals. “Many of the breeders will give us a better animal than they will take to the Royal Show themselves,” Bob says. However, Bob says winning is not everything.

“Each of the steers is different - they all have different personalities and behaviours,” Bob says.

“I am happy as long as all animals are shown to their full potential, whether we win or not.”

“The students get to know the animals very well and most of them are molly-coddled.”

See the Led Steers competition in the Beef Cattle arena on September 12 from 9am.

Year 12 student Kahlia Jenke, of Eudunda, has been involved with the Led Steers program since year 8. She lists winning the Grand Champion led steer title for two years in a row as her major highlight.

a bird where you have a clear standard to breed to – a standard of perfection to reach which you continually try to attain in your breeding programs. “And it’s really eye-catching to see a colony of large, white King pigeons.”

Encouraged by this childhood interest, Chris has gone on to become one of Australia’s leading King pigeon breeders, winning eight Champion Breed titles at the Royal Adelaide Show, ten National titles at Australian National Pigeon Association (ANPA) shows and judging at pigeon shows in the United States, France and the United Kingdom.

Chris, who also breeds Red-headed Gouldian finches, says he currently keeps around 15 breeding pairs at his Happy Valley home, producing 50-60 birds a year, with keen interest in them from exhibitors and fanciers throughout Australia wanting new stock.

He’s even continued to refine and develop the White King to the standard of perfection for the King pigeon, being awarded an ANPA master breeder award for his efforts in 2010. Chris’s motto in breeding Kings is “in the pursuit of excellence”.

“My wife jokes that I tricked her with my love affair with pigeons as I had no birds when we courted but as soon as we married, along came pigeons back into my life. That was just on 30 years ago now so they have been a lifetime hobby for me.”

“It’s been great to develop an understanding of the breed, to build my awareness of the finer points and to start to refine and build an improved bird,” he says. The feature breed in the Pigeon section at this year’s Royal Show, King pigeons originated in America in the late 1800s. Characterised by their deep, round body, short tail, tight feathers, straight legs, well-rounded prominent chest and reasonably large head, King pigeons are a popular breed worldwide with breed clubs in many countries. “They’re quite easy to handle and placid in hand,” says Chris, a public servant. “I like the mannerisms of the King pigeon and the fact that it’s a balanced, symmetrical breed. “King pigeons are an intense hobby for me, something I’ve been interested in for many years,” he explains.

After a break of several years, he’s looking forward to showing his King pigeons at the Adelaide Royal come September. “The Royal Adelaide Show offers an outstanding venue for pigeon breeders and has the best pigeon and poultry section of any Royal Show in Australia,” he said. “It’s a very special show for the pigeon hobbyist and is considered a unique opportunity to display your birds and hobby to the greater community.”

“Of course, we both like to win, but it’s a rare breed, so it’s good to have Dad in the competition as well,” says Michael, who has won the Champion Ancona title twice and Reserve Champion three times. Michael, whose day job is at the Price salt works, has kept and exhibited chooks since the age of 13, when his uncle, Len Stoodley, entered some birds into the Mount Pleasant Show. “I’ve been hooked ever since,” he says. “I like the competitiveness of exhibiting, being able to meet people who share a common interest and the opportunity to travel around Australia to different shows.” One of the feature breeds in the Poultry competition, Ancona Bantams originated in the Marche region of Italy in the nineteenth century. Featuring attractive black plumage mottled with white spots, they are of moderate size and one in three feathers has a white V-tip on the end. “They’re attractive to look at and have an excellent feed to egg ratio, which means they don’t eat a lot,” says Michael, also a steward in this year’s Poultry competition. Though not used in commercial egg production, Michael says Ancona Bantams are excellent layers who produce lots of good-sized, white eggs, making them ideal for backyard chook runs. According to John, the caged bird section is expecting over 300 entries in 2013, with improved lighting assisting viewing.

he 76-year-old from Cumberland Park has been a caged bird enthusiast for seven decades.

John was just six when he became fascinated by his father’s canaries, and that fascination continues today with an aviary taking pride of place in his backyard. Three years ago it was jam-packed with 150 birds, including Australian Finches, Gouldian 50 Emblemas, Black Hearts, Stars, Chestnuts, King Quail and Scarlet Chested Parrots. However, a viral infection followed by two enormous rats breaking into the cage, have taken a heavy toll, reducing the number to about 20 birds. At 74, it could have put end to John’s life-long hobby, but rebuilding his flock was the only option for this passionate caged bird breeder, also a judge and supervisor of the caged bird section of the Royal Adelaide Show.

To donate life

Canaries will take centre-stage for the first three days of the Show, Australian and foreign finches the next two days, Zebra finches following that, and the last two days will feature parrots, lovebirds, doves and quail. John says the Stan Watson Trophy, named after a former RA&HS caged bird supervisor, will this year be awarded to the champion canary, with the award rotating between the four sections. “The judging of cage birds can be tricky,” says John. “Criteria such as angle to the perch, tightness of feather etc, can often be different an hour after judging and the judge has to explain why he chose this bird over that one,” John says.

John says one of his favourite birds is the Gouldian Finch. “The Gouldian is native to the Northern Territory and the male has a purple chest, a bright yellow under belly and a bright green back,” he says. “The hen is much less pronounced in these colourings - of course, like the human race, the males are more beautiful than the females,” he cheekily adds. Helen Richardson, Life Member of Basketry SA, said members of the organisation will be conducting demonstrations of stitching, weaving and string making at the Royal Adelaide Show. “There will also be talks about basketry throughout the Show,” says Helen. “Basketry SA is also pleased to have been invited to embellish the hanging pod chairs featured in Sophie Thomson’s garden display. “Until quite recently, in historical terms, a basket was a container with a practical purpose, and usually made from plant materials. They were used in every household with diverse uses such as baby carriers, dog baskets, strawberry punnets, coffins, animal enclosures, and fences.”

$12 Parking at the Royal Show Royal Show parking entry and exits have now been made easier.

According to Helen, the range of natural, fibrous materials which can be used for basketry is extensive. “For example, fruit tree prunings, Willow, Dogwood and Cordylines offer firm stakes while the more malleable leaves of Chasmanthe, Daylily, Watsonia, Iris, the leathery Philodendron leaf shield and reeds and rushes make lovely weavers,” she said. “The unlikely Date Palm inflorescence, the Jacaranda and Robinia leaf stem and wild grasses can also be stitched into sensational forms. “These are all materials which would die off normally in the garden, or be pruned and then discarded. Basketry is a great way to recycle and reuse garden refuse. “These discarded garden materials or weeds are free and available to everyone. Anyone can make a basket.”

ou’ll see works in oil, acrylic, watercolour, pastel and silk, and if you see something you absolutely must have then don’t despair – all the works on exhibition are for sale. Here we meet three of the judges behind the prize.

Ken Orchard Seeing the joy and pride that public encouragement brings to children when their work is exhibited, is one of the best parts of judging the Royal Adelaide Show Art Purchase Exhibition, according to multi awardwinning artist, Ken Orchard. “As a parent whose children have entered the Royal Adelaide Show exhibition I understand the joy and pride that it brings to children when they see their work in a larger context,” he says.

He has exhibited nationally since 1987, with works selected for numerous survey exhibitions in Australia and the United Kingdom. His major collaborative exhibition Prospects: Re-imaging gold country at Ophir & Hill End toured SA and NSW in 2009-13. He has judged a number of art prizes, including the Kernewek Lowender Prize, the Murray Bridge Rotary Art Prize, the Clare Rotary Art Prize and the Waterhouse Prize, South Australian Museum.

Amanda Pepe Chief executive officer of the Helpmann Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts, Amanda Pepe has fond memories of childhood visits to the Royal Show.

“As an artist, winning a prize is an important affirmation in a profession that is often challenging, solitary and unremunerative, and which demands a lot of thought and persistence.”

“As a small child I was fascinated by the halls and pavilions and indeed, still today, I am drawn in to see whose fruit cake, bantam, flower arrangement or artwork has attracted the attention of the judges and to marvel at the depth of the skills that reside in our state,” she says.

Ken, who won the inaugural Fleurieu Bienniale Water Prize, and is a multiple winner of the Heysen Prize (Drawing) and the Pedersen Memorial Prize at the Queensland Art Gallery, studied at the SA School of Art and Sydney College of the Arts, before taking up a lecturing post at the University of Wollongong, followed by stints of art teaching at UniSA.

The former editor of the Adelaide Review, Amanda said she was honoured to be asked to judge the Art Purchase Exhibition, a competition she describes as

having “encouraged many to dip their toe into the waters of artistic endeavour over the years”. A not-for-profit organisation, in partnership with tertiary institutions teaching arts in SA, the Helpmann Academy supports graduate and emerging artists from those institutions, actively creating opportunities for their professional development, promoting South Australia as a centre of excellence in creative education and contributing to the artistic community of this state. Since joining the Helpmann Academy, she has introduced a number of new programs and awards, including international residencies for visual artists in Rome, India and China.

Lisa Slade Lisa Slade, project curator with the Art Gallery of South Australia, moved to Adelaide two and a half years ago with fond memories of Sydney’s Easter Show – the biggest in Australia. “However, I was thrilled to discover that the Royal Adelaide Show is even more traditional and firmly rooted in the agricultural show tradition than the Sydney Show,” she says. “Last year I enjoyed the art and craft exhibits at the Adelaide Show and marvelled at the techniques employed by the exhibitors. “I look forward to this year’s discoveries.” An expert on Australian art, Lisa curated the recent exhibition HEARTLAND: contemporary art from South Australia and is the coordinating curator for the Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art, to be held at the Art Gallery of South Australia from March 1 to June 1, 2014. She also lectures in the postgraduate art history program delivered by Adelaide University in collaboration with the Gallery.

he historic Duncan Challenge Trophy will feature in a major art exhibition in London from September 21 to December 8. The ‘Australia’ exhibition, to be held at the Royal Academy of Arts, will feature over 200 paintings, photos and multimedia from some of the most important collections in Australia, many of which have never been seen in the United Kingdom. Spanning 200 years from 1800 to the present day, it outlines a period of rapid and intense change, ranging from the impact of colonisation on the indigenous population to nation building by the early pioneers and enterprising urbanisation of more recent times. The exhibition, which has the Prince of Wales as its patron, will also include Australian literature, film, dance, music and food. Royal Agricultural & Horticultural Society of SA Archivist Marilyn Ward said the Duncan Trophy, for the best collection of exhibits from a particular district, was first presented for competition in 1913 and won outright in 1924 by the Mount Barker Agricultural Bureau. “Last year it was displayed at the Art Gallery of South Australia as part of the ‘Bounty: Nineteenth-century South Australian gold and silver exhibition’,” she said. “It’s quite an honour to have the Duncan Trophy chosen as part of the Australia exhibition in London, and we hope many people get the chance to see it.”

The best of SA’s alpacas will be showcased at the Royal Adelaide Show, in a competition which doubles as the SA Alpaca Breed and Fleece Championships. PHOTOGRAPHY: MEL KITSCHKE Supervisor Lea Richens, of Collea Springs Alpaca Stud at Clare, says the Show is a terrific avenue to promote alpacas. “This year we are also introducing junior judging of alpacas to the competition schedule,” she says. “We’ll also have alpaca shearing and hand-spinning demonstrations at the SA Region site in the Farm Expo Pavilion.” Lea (pictured) says there is always a constant stream of people coming through to look at the alpacas. “Some people are just curious, others are interested in buying alpacas as guardians for their sheep or for lawn mowers, and there are those who are interested in farming alpacas for their unique fleece,” says Lea. Lea, who has been running alpacas for more than 20 years, has been involved in co-ordinating the alpaca competition at the Royal Show since 1997. She says she really enjoys her role which gives her an excellent opportunity to keep in touch with other breeders. And while she doesn’t exhibit alpacas from her own stud, Collea Springs, to avoid any potential conflict of interest, she sees being involved as co-ordinator as a good way to monitor standards in her own herd. Lea says the Australian alpaca industry was entering exciting times, with alpaca numbers throughout the nation now enabling steady export of both alpacas and fibre. Jolyon Porter, who has run Yacka Ridge Alpaca stud at Birdwood for the last 20 years, is one of the founding members of the Alpaca Fibre Network Australia, a syndicate of growers working together to get bulk quantities of alpaca fibre in the same colour and micron range. “Marketing of Australian alpaca wool has been growing steadily for the past few years, but is accelerating now. In our group, we have 30 to 40 growers working to put together decent size parcels of quality fibre,” Jolyon said. “This makes marketing easier.” Jolyon says anything that can be made out of wool can be made out of alpaca. “Alpaca is lighter weight than wool, but has a better ability to trap warmth,” he says. Jolyon, who runs Huacaya alpacas, has won many ribbons at the Royal Adelaide Show, including Reserve Champions and Best of Colour awards. Sheaf tossing a family affair

In the early 20th century, paddocks of hay would be cut by hand with a sickle, bundled into a sheaf and tossed onto a cart with a pitch-fork. PHOTOGRAPHY: JOHN KRUGER

W

hile sickles and sheaves have long gone from the paddock, replaced by sophisticated baling machinery and tightly compressed bales, the practice of pitch-forking sheaves is a skill maintained by a group of passionate Show competitors. Their sport: sheaf tossing. The aim: to pitchfork a 3.65kg bag (8lb) as high as possible over a cross bar between two upright poles six metres apart (like a high jump). Daniel Schache of Lobethal is one such competitor. Daniel was introduced to the sport by his father David, five times Australian sheaf tossing champion. Competing on the show circuit by the age of 13, Daniel secured his first Australian title at the age of 20, the youngest person in history to win the title. Daniel has since won three more Australian titles and been runner-up on many occasions to fellow South Australian, Sheridan Holland from Murray Bridge, the current world champion. “Accuracy is the difficult part of sheaf tossing. The bag has to go between the poles and over a cross bar. Some people can throw high but not accurately. Three misses and you are out,” Daniel said. “The higher the bar goes, the harder it is to be accurate – this is when the competition gets really interesting for people to watch.” Daniel says 2014 will mark 100 years since sheaf tossing was introduced to the Adelaide Show. “Sheaf tossing has been held every year except a few years missed due to war and we believe Adelaide was the first show to introduce sheaf tossing as a sport in Australia.” “Next year we are hoping to rustle up some of the family members of competitors from the early days, including the Schwerdt family who were part of the first sheaf tossing competition in Adelaide. “We are planning a celebration – it’s a big milestone for us and for the Show.” Daniel and Sheridan will be competing at this year’s Royal Adelaide Show, in the beef arena next to the wood chopping event.

School groups vising the Royal Adelaide Show are being encouraged to visit the Ground to Grub pavilion this year, with organisers developing a student worksheet for teachers.

D

esigned to engage show-goers in the science of growing great grains, the Ground to Grub display features interactive science-based displays focusing on plant breeding for quality grain, pests in the paddock, soils for quality grain, grain health and nutrition and general crop production. “Children and adults alike enjoy the Ground to Grub activities,” says Andrew Hentschke, chair of the Grains and Fodder committee. “They can try out the grain touch-and-feel boxes, look through the microscope at plant cells, root hairs and grain pests and learn more about pollination of cereal crops. “And if teachers would like more information they can simply contact us for more details.” Mr Hentschke said the exhibit provided a valuable educational role at The Show, informing people of all ages about how their food is produced. “There seems to have been a decline in the general public’s understanding of how their food is produced, with few people understanding the science and strategy used by South Australian farmers and scientists to grow healthy, sustainable grain,” he said. Children aged between 5 and 13 are also invited to participate in a short grain milling workshop where they get to make play dough and do a leaf peel experiment, which involves peeling a thin layer of leaf tissue off and viewing it under the microscope. “People can register for the workshops each day by simply signing up with the Science Educator in the Golden Grains Pavilion – first in best dressed!”

“Though Duroc sows don’t have great maternal abilities, the Duroc boar crossed with Landrace or Large White sows produce excellent pigs for the pork and bacon trade.” In the judging ring Graham says judges look for good strong bone, a small head in proportion to the size of the body, a short thick neck, moderately broad shoulders carrying thickness, a straight or slightly arching back from shoulder to ham, broad and full hams and rump, a round slope from loin to tail and white or pink skin with auburn to reddy-brown hair.

If you’re keen to see a baby pig at this year’s Royal Adelaide Show then Graham Reu is the man to see.

When he gets a break from his Pigs & People and feature breed duties, Graham said he likes to take a look in the Poultry Pavilion and buy a couple of Bertie Beetle showbags.

A

pig industry expert and general manager of artificial breeding centre SABOR in Clare, Graham is in charge of the Show’s Pigs & People display, the star of which is a sow and her litter.

“I have been going to the Show every year for the past 27 years and I started showing Poultry and Pigeons way back then,” he says.

“I love seeing the smiles on the kid’s faces when they hold the baby pigs – even the big kids get excited about holding one,” Graham says.

“One of my earliest memories of the Show was climbing over the main gates on Goodwood Road very early one morning when I was working in the Poultry and Pigeon pavilion to start feeding the birds and clean the pavilion ready for the show-goers!”

“We also answer any questions people may have about pigs – everything from how many piglets in a litter to the characteristics of different breeds,” says Graham. “It’s a great opportunity to educate show-goers about the South Australian pig industry, including information on nutrition, welfare and stock-handling practices.” Graham is also a member of the Dairy Cattle and Pig Committee, a position which includes overseeing this year’s feature breed in the pig section, the Duroc.

early 1980s they were reintroduced to Australia, with new bloodlines coming from New Zealand and Canada. Used for both pork and bacon production, they are renowned for their fast growth rates and lean carcasses.

“Pure Breed Durocs are not very common in Australia, but Duroc crossed with other white breeds is very common,” says Graham.

Adelaide show-goers will be the first in Australia to check out an exciting new range of showbags.

S

ydney-based Rustic Rabbit, which launched in February, will be bringing four quality value-formoney bags to the Royal Adelaide Show – Athletica, Spirit State, Rubi Rabbit and The Style Press.

“Staying fit, eating healthy, and regular exercise have become shared ways of life for many of us, and our Athletica and Spirit State bags tap into this trend, he says.

Owner Pasha Shoghi said he was extremely excited to be releasing the new bags in Adelaide.

“Ideal for men aged 18 to 40 who love the gym, sports or extreme outdoor activities, the Athletica bag will be packed with items to help guys stay healthy and looking good, both on and off the field. It includes a gym bag, sports cap, gym towel, heaps of discount vouchers and more.

“Rustic Rabbit is all about delivering happiness to our customers, and I’m hoping that our new range will not only delight Royal Adelaide show-goers but bring a real buzz and energy to the Showbag Pavilion, he says. A veteran on the Royal Show circuit, Pasha worked with a leading showbag operator for 11 years, leaving in April 2011 to take up a General Manager role with a marketing logistics company. Keen to find a better work/life balance, he and wife Michelle, a graphic designer, established Rustic Rabbit earlier this year. According to Pasha, Rustic Rabbit’s showbags offer something different and unique for shoppers.

this bag is perfect for women who love fashion, beauty, travel and quality products. It comes complete with a fashion bag, cosmetic bag, sunglasses, iphone cover and great value beauty and lifestyle vouchers, including an Auge restaurant voucher. For the savvy tweens – young girls aged 6 to 12 – Rustic Rabbit has Rubi Rabbit – a colourful bag tailor-made for girls who love fashion, beauty, being with friends and having fun. There’s a duffle bag, fashion sunglasses, charm bracelet, lipgloss, a diary and more. Rustic Rabbit’s showbags will be compiled by Adelaide’s Bedford Industries.

“Spirit State has a similar theme, and is designed for women who love the gym, the outdoors, yoga or meditation, but who like to look their best when working up a sweat. It contains heaps of gym gear, discount vouchers and some great samples.

Back in the early 1960s Hoadley’s Chocolate Factory in Melbourne came up with a great way to use the unused shards of honeycomb left over from the production of Violet Crumble. They called it Bertie Beetle.

T

he little guy made his showbag debut in 1963, appearing in the Hoadley’s Chocolate Showbag, alongside Violet Crumble and Polly Waffle. “That was back in the day when there were 30-odd showbags available, not the 300 you can choose from today,” says Kate Young from showbag operator, Chicane Marketing. “In 1972 Bertie broke through with his own showbag – and from there he never looked back.” Since then, the $2 Bertie Beetle Blue bag has become a favourite for many show-goers, representing great value for families. To celebrate Bertie’s 50th anniversary Chicane has released a special bag for the Royal Adelaide Show, complete with a whopping 50 Bertie Beetles, a special anniversary egg cup and Bertie Beetle mask. Priced at $15, it’s valued at over $45. A range of other Bertie Beetle bags, priced from $2 to $10, will also be available at the Show.

Free Bertie Beetle bags up for grabs Bertie Beetle is turning 50 in 2013 and the Royal Adelaide Show is celebrating with the launch of a new digital trail. Use your smartphone to scan the 8 Bertie Beetle QR Codes around the Royal Adelaide Show and when you’ve scanned them all, claim your free Bertie Beetle Showbag from the showbag pavilion.

oasting a fun, country and western feel, the new premises will enable Allingtons to stock an even larger range of products from well-known and iconic country brands, including Ariat Western Boots, Akubra, RM Williams, Wrangler, Drizabone, Levis, Blundstone, Hard Yakka, Canterbury and Bullzye western casual wear. Owner Graham Allington said the team were excited about this year’s Royal Show and looked forward to welcoming show-goers to the new location. “Allingtons have attended the Royal Show since 1996,” says Graham. “Initially we had a smaller stand located opposite the old Squire’s Machinery site, before this area was replaced with the large farming produce marquee. We then moved to a larger site opposite the wool hall, a location we held until last year.”

T

This year celebrating 35 years in business, the Allingtons family purchased Golden Grove Supplies in 1978, which was situated in the rural township of old Golden Grove, and commenced trading as Allingtons Supplies, which operated as a chaff-cutting and grain and produce store.

heir mission is to End Hunger in South Australia. Every year Foodbank SA distributes 1.5 million kilograms of food with a retail value of $7 million, to over 600 welfare agencies, charities and schools, which assists 140,000 people with enough food for 2.9 million meals!

They later expanded into saddlery, country clothing and rural hardware. In 1988 the business was divided into three separate entities, with Graham Allington becoming director of the saddlery and country clothing business – a position he holds to this day. In 2001 Allingtons moved to their current location on Main North Road, Parafield, enabling them to stock work wear and a bigger range of boots, country clothing and western wear.

Please help us to help Foodbank SA keep up their amazing work! This year at Royal Show entry gates there will be food donation bins where show-goers can donate core staple, long-life foods such as UHT Milk, cereals, soups, tea, coffee and canned goods.

According to Graham, Allington’s philosophy has always been to stock an extensive range of products from some of the best country brands and to sell them at the most competitive prices possible. “Our long history of trading and loyalty to the brands, in addition to our large buying power, allows us to provide our customers with products that represent great value for money,” says Graham.

P

romoting the free breast cancer screening service to South Australian women aged over 40, it is hoped the vivid blue semi-trailer’s presence will help educate women about the importance of regular breast cancer screening. BreastScreen SA’s Promotions and Education Manager, Karen Woodcock, says it’s a great opportunity for women who have never had a mammogram, or those who have been putting it off, to come along and check out the mobile clinic and have a relaxed chat with BreastScreen SA’s friendly staff. “Regular screening mammograms are so important for women once they turn 50, as 75% of all breast cancer cases in Australia occur in women over the age of 50,” Ms Woodcock said. “For a South Australian woman aged 50 to 69 years, having a breast screen every two years has been found to reduce her chance of dying from breast cancer by around 40%, demonstrating the impact early detection has on fighting this disease.

how-goers will be able to view historical photos and equipment, try their luck on the electronic timeline buzz test and, in a nod to modern policing, have their photo taken whilst sitting on a real police motorbike.

“Also, most people don’t realise that 9 out of 10 women who are diagnosed with breast cancer do not have a family history of the disease. This means all women need to be vigilant when it comes to their breast health.”

The oldest centrally controlled police service in Australia, and one of the oldest forces in the world, SA Police was established by Governor Hindmarsh on April 28, 1838, as the South Australia Police Force.

While screening appointments are not being offered at the Show, it is a chance for women to visit the mobile unit to familiarise themselves with the clinic and speak with friendly female staff in a relaxed atmosphere.

Henry Inman was appointed as the first police commander at the rank of Inspector, and the police force commenced by recruiting 20 young men – ten mounted constables and ten foot constables. All members of the original police force were recruited as volunteers, unlike other Australian colonies which employed soldiers or former convicts.

BreastScreen SA has seven fixed-clinics located throughout metropolitan Adelaide and three mobile screening units that visit 34 locations across the state every two years.

Since those early days South Australia Police has been at the forefront of contemporary policing, committed to ‘keeping SA safe’.

Next time you visit the Sheep Pavilion at the Royal Adelaide Show spare a thought for the Scouts.

E

ach year, on the Monday night of the Show, 120 South Australian Scouts and parents roll up their sleeves and muck out the pavilion, ready for the next breed of sheep to be brought in. But the Scout’s devotion to the Show doesn’t end there. Another 100 members help on the Farm Walk, while another group of hardy Scouts and their parents come in after the Show to clean out the horse stalls.

Best of all, the free Scouts SA marquee, next to the sheds, is a great spot for parents and children to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the Show. Parents can take a seat while they watch their children enjoy some great activities in a safe, active environment, giving everyone the opportunity to re-group before venturing back out into the Showground. The Scouts also run a great value climbing wall at the Show, giving show-goers the chance to experience this exciting and challenging activity. According to Scouts SA chief executive officer Dan Ryan, the Show provides a fantastic opportunity to engage the Adelaide public and for Scout groups to raise valuable funds. “Scouts are all about fun, action, adventure, excitement and especially new experiences and we all know The Show provides plenty of opportunity for this,” he said.

sa.scouts.com.au

“Some families tell us they look forward to coming to the Scout tent every year and try to guess what the activities might be. Most of the games and activities are from scout halls or recent scout events so visitors to our marquee get a realistic idea of the activities that they might do as Scouts. “In the past we’ve had indoor caving, skill tests, puzzles, sand sculpture, climbing and swinging on a giant rope swing.” Mr Ryan said the valued relationship between the Show Society and Scouts SA spans several decades. “Of course, Scouting provides much more than we could ever showcase at the Show,” he said. “When you visit us at the Show make sure you talk to our leaders about how your child may benefit from the fun, action, adventure and life skill learning that scouting provides.” For more information on scouting visit www.sa.scouts.com.au

Year Five Scotch College student Maeve Allen-Horvat will be jetting off to an international Robotics competition in Malaysia later this year after winning the Digital STEMSEL competition at last year’s Royal Adelaide Show. PHOTOGRAPHY: JOHN KRUGER

M

aeve’s anti-collision robots, which won the overall prize for the Royal Show Innovation competition, attracted the eye of expert judges who provided her with more information on real-life anti-collision research. According to Maeve, 10, her interest in robotics was sparked after a visit to the Royal Show a couple of years ago. “It looked interesting,” she said. “It’s fun and I have the ability to easily make anything.” Maeve got the idea for the anti-collision robots after her mum was involved in several car accidents where cars travelling quite slowly crashed into the back of her car. “In all cases the other driver was distracted or misjudged their speed,” she says. “As a family we discussed ways that technology could be used to try and stop this sort of thing occurring in the future.” In 2013 Maeve and her team will enter a quadro-copter (Drone Helicopter), built and programmed in the advanced STEMSEL (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths, Social Enterprise Learning) class she attends at eLabtronics, who sponsor and organise the robotics and innovation competitions at the Royal Show. The quadro-copter features a flashing LED light in the shape of a boomerang, designed by Maeve and her team to reflect the logo of Tandanya, the National Aboriginal Cultural Institute. “A quadro-copter seemed like a really cool idea,” says Maeve, who hopes to pursue a career in robotics when she grows up. “I’d like to find ways to use robotics to help people medically or maybe become an electronic engineer.” The Royal Show’s Robotics competition requires entrants to produce a commercially viable invention which uses programming of microcontrollers to perform tasks. The invention must add value to or improve the human condition or quality of life, and must be a viable business proposition with a marketable product. Miroslav Kostecki, from eLabtronics, says the Royal Adelaide Show competition has helped university students gain real-life employability skills that have helped with their career development.

56 Official Magazine of the Royal Adelaide Show ’ Www.theshow.com.au

“Our overall aim is to encourage more young people to get interested in STEMSEL, and to consider careers in these areas in the future,” he says. “The competition has also gained the attention of international education experts, with the World STEM conference in October interested in displaying winners from the Show.” Guest judge for this year’s competition, RAAF Squadron Leader, Engineers Australia Vice President and STEMSEL Foundation Director Fernando Gonzalez said the Royal Show technology competition helped stimulate interest in science, maths and technology-based careers amongst young people. “The shortage of skills in the STEM area is a globally recognised problem,” Squadron Leader Gonzalez said. “However, where the Royal Show competition is gold, is with the SEL (Social Enterprise Learning) bit on the end – it means you add to the technical learning experience the opportunity to develop and employ the design as a diverse team of young entrepreneurs.” Squadron Leader Gonzalez said it was important to get children fascinated and engaged by science and technology, and that STEMSEL programs and competitions like the Royal Adelaide Show helped achieve this. “Kids need to be able to see science at work, not just learn about it in the classroom,” he said. “And there’s certainly a wow factor when you see technology doing funky stuff.” Previously open to primary and high school students, the competition is now also open to adults, including tertiary students and engineers. Students from each of Adelaide’s three universities are planning to enter, with the Royal Adelaide Show providing two tickets to a robotics event in Singapore as the main prize. Visitors to the eLabtronics stand during the Show will be able to try their luck at flying the quadro-copter, drive soccer robots, see an operating 3D printer and test their skills on the Giant Reaction Game or Wire Loop test. Students from the Australian Science and Maths School (ASMS) and mentors from all three Adelaide universities will be on-hand to demonstrate the inventions. Strongman competition

Twenty of Australia’s toughest strongmen are set to battle it out in the Strongman Competition at this year’s Royal Adelaide Show.

E

ntrants from South Australia and interstate are expected to contest the prestigious title, with the Winning Athletes going on to compete in the 2013 Australia’s Strongest Man Competition, to be held in Melbourne.

Competitors will go head to head in five classes, including crowd favourite The Truck Pull, which sees entrants pull a 12-tonne truck over a 20-metre distance.

Competition convenor Jordan Steffens said many of the country’s top performers would be competing at the invitation-only event, with $5,000 in prize money up for grabs.

“There’s also a Yolk Walk, where competitors carry a frame over their shoulders weighted to around 480 kilos, and a Farmers Walk, where they have to carry two giant suitcases, each weighing around 150 kilos each,” said Jordan.

“The level of fitness and strength required for a competition of this intensity means that only the country’s top performers have the capacity to compete,” he said.

See the Strongman Competition Truck Pull at 6.30pm on Thursday, September 12, in The Kingsway, and other events at 9am on Friday, September 13, on the Goat & Alpaca marquee.

“Though the Strongman Competition was held at the Royal Show in 2012, this is the first year that we’ve hosted an official qualifier for the national title, so it’s very exciting.”

A pint-sized performer and an Elvis impersonator will be part of the fun of this year’s pig racing and diving event – a perennial Show favourite.

F

ive-year-old Mater Vandeleur, a third-generation pigmaster, will share the announcing duties for a second year at the animal showcase, which sees piglets pelt around a track and dive into water.

Proud grandfather Tom Vandeleur – a farmer from Murray Bridge – says this will be the 21st year he’s run the event in Adelaide with son Michael, and now his grandson. “I never wanted to work with someone so young, but Mater did it in Darwin last year and it was such a huge success, I thought I’ve got to bring him to Adelaide,” Tom enthuses. “We just did the Sydney Royal and Bathurst shows and Mater was a feature everywhere we went. He comes out onto the stage area during the diving and ‘drives’ the pigs. They’re in his control – and the people love it.”

For the first time, Elvis impersonator Mark Borg from Sydney will also rouse the crowd before the racing. Tom says: “I watched Mark perform at the Rock & Roll Milk Bar at the Sydney Show and I was taken by his performance and beautiful costumes. He doesn’t overplay Elvis, and I thought this was something I wanted to present before the pig racing.” With a laugh, Tom adds: “I could say Elvis has reappeared. They’ve been looking everywhere for him and he’s here at the Showground!” Maltese-born Mark, known as Born Again Elvis, says: “I’ll be doing a lot of the classics, like Heartbreak Hotel, Suspicious Minds and Viva Las Vegas, and wearing various outfits.” See the pigs race and dive – and the fun performances – at the Western Entertainment Arena. & Elvis Pig RacingRENCE MAP REFE
