Soldiers club to offer uni scholarships Funding towards first and second year university studies - Wellington Soldiers Club historic offer

FIRST AND second year university students are to be offered scholarships up to the value of $5000 in a historymaking on-going offer by Wellington Soldiers Memorial Club (WSMC).

Club directors initiated the scholarship program at their December board meeting after a proposal was put by director Barry Jeffery.

Information has been forwarded to high school principals throughout the western region.

The scholarship is for students from the Wellington region (Wellington, Geurie, Mumbil, Stuart Town, Euchareena and Yeoval districts) who have been given university status following success in the Higher School Certificate, or entering their second year of university studies.

The one-off scholarship funds will be allocated to up to four students to assist in covering various costs which they or their family may incur, such as accommodation, purchase of books or term fees, or computer purchase costs whilst at university required under university guidelines.

Scholarships would be paid directly to the university or other bodies such as real estate agents, students supply companies and will be up to a maximum of $5000 per student, available to first and second year of university studies only.

WSMC scholarships will be given to local students who have demonstrated academic talent in their chosen field and who have a willingness to return at sometime to a country area and work in that chosen field.

The scholarship is limited to students attending university outside a radius of 150 kilometres of their family home.

Application forms have been provided to high school principals or available from the Soldiers Club administration office.

Completed forms will also require an attached brief summary on what the applicant’s goals may be after graduation and how the applicant would like to help his/her home community after graduation, also how this scholarship will help in their future studies.

“By offering these university scholarships, the club is helping to nurture community sons and daughters toward a fulfilling future through university,” Ms Edwards said.

Mayoral Column Foundations built for LGA grand future WITH NINE new Dubbo Regional Council Councillors elected at the end of 2021, last year was a year of learning the ropes for our new Councillor team. In 2023, Councillors were armed with knowledge and an additional year of experience and that has been put to excellent use as I reflect on the achievements of 2023.

Dubbo’s year is ending in a similar way to how it began: with a celebration of sporting events that highlight our exceptional sporting facilities and the desire for organisations to bring events to Dubbo.

In 2023, our Australia Day ceremonies in Dubbo and Wellington took a meaningful leap towards inclusivity with the inclusion of Aboriginal speakers and our first-ever twilight Australia Day event held in Wellington. These moves acknowledged our rich Aboriginal heritage with 15.6 per cent of our population identifying as Aboriginal. The Holi Mela Festival of Colours and the Cross Cultural Carnivale by ORISCON were examples of the changing nature of our population with 18.5pc of our population born overseas.

Our environmental sustainability efforts were bolstered throughout the year. We made significant steps in our Net Zero Framework and our nation-leading Zero Emissions Fleet Plan has resulted in many staff already driving electric vehicles whilst saving the community money.

We also signed new electricity supply contracts that move towards the full supply of green energy. Renewable energy is proving to be very important for the region with the continued expansion of our Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) which will not only see the region contribute to solving Climate Change but also see billions of dollars of investment land in our region over the next decade. The business plan we are developing for the REACT Centre will see ongoing tourism in Wellington as a direct result of our location in the REZ. Visitors are an important part of our economy with $450 million injected annually. Conferences and events helped drive visitation with one example seeing 280 firefighting professionals attending an international conference at our airport. We will continue to improve tour-

ism offerings with a new exhibit opened at Old Dubbo Gaol and funding strategy determined for our Wiradjuri Cultural Tourism Centre.

Infrastructure upgrades were an important aspect of 2023. We were the first in this nation to use the new 3D printing technique to build a piece of public infrastructure. The result is the amenities block in Macquarie Lions Park West.

The technological advancements didn’t stop at EVs and 3D printing as residents can now receive daily reports of their water usage via an app and new camera technology was trialled by our parking officers.

A high population growth rate requires continuing expansion of our housing stock. Private developers are also investing heavily in the future of Dubbo.

Financial sustainability is the number one issue facing Council. Councillors are exploring a variety of ways to maximise efficiency of Council and return our budget to the black. Returning the pool to an external contractor from the more expensive internal management was one of those decisions designed to improve the bottom

line. Although the introduction has not gone as smoothly as we would have liked, I am confident the organisation that won the tender, with over 220 venues under management in Australia and New Zealand, will iron out teething issues in the new year.

At the beginning of the year, after the wet finish to 2022, the condition of the roads was the number one reason for residents to contact me.

With some dry weather and additional road funding, we have been able to do significant patching in addition to major roadworks at Sheraton Road; Wheelers Lane; Burrendong Way; Saxa Road; Gollan Road and more. Conversations on roads and the Master Plan subsided by the end of the year as other topics became more important. Councillors have worked together tirelessly in making this region vibrant, inclusive, and forward-looking and staff have undertaken the work with enthusiasm and pride. I am excited for the future of our LGA. Merry Christmas to all our residents and I look forward to a bright and prosperous New Year.

Deputy Mayoral Column A year in review AS THIS is the last column for 2023, I thought it opportune to flick through some of the matters discussed in the 48 earlier columns (this is the 49th for the year – not that I am counting).

The changed format for our 2023 Australia Day Ceremony was front and centre in the New Year. The move to hold the ceremony on the eve of Australia Day was not universally accepted, but in my opinion, the larger than normal attendance and the inclusivity obvious during the ceremony, vindicated the move.

Perhaps the greatest praise for the move came from our Australia Day Ambassador, Peter Herbert – a veteran of many Australia Day functions. He could not speak too highly of the event.

And about Australia Day – if you have worked with, or are aware of, any person who deserves recognition for what they have

contributed to our community, then please nominate them for one of the 2024 Australia Day Awards.

Assessing and quantifying the costs of remediation works after the November 2022 floods occupied much of Council staff’s time and energy early in the year.

We are still waiting on the outcome of a funding application to restore the Duke of Wellington bridge, but substantial funding has come our way to remediate other badly affected areas.

Four Council meetings were held in Wellington over the past year. One of the indirect benefits of holding these meetings in Wellington is that it helps integrate Dubbo based councillors and staff into our wider LGA. The Wellington based meetings will continue through 2024.

Renewable energy development around Wellington and districts was a hot topic

through the year and remains a work in progress. Council has worked hard to gain greater community benefits from the transition to renewables. Progress has been made, but there is still a way to go. On this subject, applications for the next round from the Bodangora Wind Farm’s community benefit fund opens in the New Year. Don’t miss out!

Six Citizenship Ceremonies (including 1 in Wellington) were held through the year which serve to illustrate how diverse and multicultural our community is becoming.

Stuart Town’s very successful multicultural festival is testament to that as is staffing at the Dubbo Base Hospital – where I had a week’s enforced stay during the year. And with this multiculturalism, ANZAC Day still maintains its significance – especially in our smaller communities such as Mumbil and Stuart Town.

Crime and policing within Wellington were

much debated. Statistics show there is improvement in our town, but there is still a way to go.

DRC was successful in being awarded the NSW Junior Touch Football Championships for the next three years – next year from 23 to 25 February 2024. Attracting about 190 teams and around 7000 visitors each year, it is a significant event.

Locally, community events included the ever-successful Eisteddfod, WATS production and Wellington Arts “Con Artists” and “Inside Art” exhibitions to name but a few.

During the year we celebrated the 100th edition of the Wellington & District Leader.

Remembering this milestone is a good segway into wishing Sharon and Mark a very happy and restful Christmas break and trust that, like the rest of us, they will come back refreshed and rearing to go in the New Year.

back a Grants awarded to cultural programs Claim demerit THE FIRST round of funding from the Dubbo Regional Council’s (DRC) SPARC Grant Program, which supports cultural programs and projects, has been awarded to the first recipients.

Four community organisations are benefiting from funding that will help deliver projects and programs that align to the SPARC Cultural Development Plan.

“This new grant aims to foster and develop more cultural programs in our local government area,” Mayor, Mathew Dickerson said. “It is great to see a diverse range of projects and programs successful in seeking funding that will benefit our local community and help elevate our vibrant cultural pro-

grams.” Successful applicants for round one of the SPARC Grant Program include: Spare Parts, Wellington – received $2400 to work with local schools to conduct workshops and one performance at the Vintage Festival. This will include a drumming workshop at Stuart Town Public School with students from Mumbil and Wongarbon and an introduction to Latin dance for over 55s to encourage socialisation and reduce isolation.

Dubbo and District Family History – $2000 to provide history resources to support genealogical investigations and family history services.

ORISCON Dubbo – $1600 to support creative practitioners to

perform across four separate events over 12 months that focus on promoting understanding of our region’s diverse cultural backgrounds.

University of the Third Age (U3A) – $4000 to help support participation courses from exercise and balance to musical accomplishment, singing, dancing, artistic/creative pursuits, academic subjects and community environment awareness and sustainability.

The SPARC Grant Program supports successful applicants in achieving the outcomes intended. Funding for the next round of the bi-annual online grant program will open in March 2024 and is facilitated through Smarty Grants.

point ALL MOTORISTS are urged to renew their commitment to safe driving heading into the Christmas and the summer holidays.

Some 1.3 million NSW drivers remain eligible to have a demerit point removed from their licence within five weeks if they remain infringement free.

The one-year demerit point scheme trial to encourage safe driving comes to a close on January 17, 2024 – meaning those who have maintained an offence-free record since January 17 this year will have one demerit point scrubbed from their licence.

Motorists should use the demerit return as an incentive to drive safely as the road toll has risen significantly in 2023 across Australia.

Louise hangs up her Food2Go apron

BY MARK GRIGGS AFTER NEARLY 18 years of making coffee, tea, milkshakes, hamburgers, steak sandwiches, a whole range of sandwich fillings and wholesome food with home-baked meats, Food2Go owner Louise Cross will officially retire tomorrow (Friday, December 22).

Upon the closure of the iconic Kimbell’s Kitchen, Louise was forced to look towards her future, but as fate has it, she was approached to start her own take-away shop in Nanima Crescent.

“I took up the offer although very nervous about going into my own business,” she said.

“But I spent lots and lots of

And success was certainly the result – the business officially opened on February 16, 2006 and has been opened from early hours each weekday since.

“During these years I have made some amazing friends locally and out of town,” she said.

“What has been lovely is that over the years I served a lot of children with their parents and I have seen those young kids grow-up to be adults and parents themselves who still visit the shop with their youngsters.

“It’s so wonderful to have been a small part in these people’s lives.

“But it’s time. I’ve decided to hang up my boots, so to speak, maybe I should say apron, as I have accumulated a few birthdays and I need to spend more time with the people I love the most.”

Louise officially finishes up tomorrow (Friday, December 22) and longtime assistant and friend, Katrina Morley takes over the business when it reopens in the New Year.

“I wish Katrina every success and all that our established customers follow her and support her as much as they have supported me.”

A cure for heatwave “hysteria”?

IF YOU think ‘climate change’ is a relatively new phenomenon, read on.

Stuart Town’s Laurie Pope came across a newspaper clipping (pictured) he had cut out (but couldn’t remember from what publication).

The story came from Dubbo resident Warren Landsey who found a record from the Western Herald in a scrapbook belonging to his greatuncle, George Elliott.

“Birds fell from trees. The pumps at the Bourke waterworks failed, and more than 70 people died of “heat apoplexy.

“This was the blistering heatwave that struck Bourke in 1896, one of the worst in the history of the west” the article stated.

“And those complaining about the recent hot weather would do well to remember it,” according to Mr Landsey.

The article published in the Western Herald started “The heat extended for a month, during which many died from heat apoplexy, and there was a general exodus from Bourke when the temperature rose to 120 degrees.

“Temperatures hit 120 degrees Fahrenheit (48.9 Celsius) three times with the mercury remaining above 46 degrees for almost a fortnight.

“January 11 saw 43-degree heat combined with “a scarcity of water owing to the pumps failing at the waterworks.

“Seven people died the next day and later that month after tens of deaths, an ammunition storehouse exploded. “{A} cyclone followed. Houses unroofed. Seven deaths.”

“Mr Landsey said the article offered a counterpoint to the “hysteria” of the weather reporting by the Sydney press.

“Summer is summer, we always get hot days,” he said.

Recycle - Reuse - Repurpose, theme for Hospital Christmas decorations IT WAS an ‘all-in’ effort by Wellington Health Service staff at our local hospital who decorated every vantage point throughout all departmental wards, offices and corridores to make the 2023 Christmas so appealling to patients and visitors.

With the help of Wellington Public School and St Mary’s Catholic School, and the Recycle, Reuse, and Repurpose theme, this year’s display gained many ‘oohs’ and ‘wows’.

This year in the annual Western Area Health Christmas decorations contest, Wellington competed against the many and varied departments of Dubbo Base hospital and ancillaries, and the now named Dubbo Sub-Acute Rehabilitation unit (formerly Lourdes Hospital).

Main cooperating organisers were Kylie Miller, Donna Brennan and Lisa Hodges, who each quickly said it was a gigantic effort by everyone.

School children provided shiny stars make from old newspapers, plastic icicles and hundreds of differing Christmas decorations, all from recycled material like toilet paper holders, paper towel holders, empty plastic bottle, bottle tops, even cut up empty Methadone bottle (not made by students), but everything has been used including a green tyre Christmas Tree.

Unfortunately for Wellington, Dubbo’s Paediatrics department was awarded the annual winning gong.

But on a positive note the KISS solution program with “Doing It For Aussie Kids” assisted 10 local families and 28 children with ‘Santa Sacks” for each, a successful effort by hospital staff and many other volunteers and ‘Christmas’ present donors.

Take a visit to the hospital and view all the wonder displays under the them of “Santa’s Home” space.

Freddy’s Magpies victorious for Jess’ dad

BY TEAGAN USHER WHEN SOMEONE you love leaves this world it’s never an easy time, but when the impact they had on everyone they left behind is so strong, something as simple as a sports team can help their legacy live on.

Jessica Fuller tragically lost her father Fred Fineran in 2016 after a long battle with cancer and has created a men’s and women’s memorial soccer team in his honour.

Fred was a well-known local plumber who worked around Wellington.

“He did lots of work around town, he even did free work to help people out, he was always friendly to everyone,” Miss Fuller said.

“I’ve played soccer since I could walk, and he’s always been a big part of that, he always watched me and was always there supporting me.

“Our team is called Freddy’s Magpies.

Growing up we always had magpies at our house, he was always feeding them.

Everyone says they are such nasty creatures, but Dad would say if you be kind to something, it will be kind back.

“You can make your own opinions, but be kind to others, and they will be kind back.”

The now 26-year-old for the past two years has been leading the teams in the ‘Six-A-Side’ competition held in Dubbo in October, and have victoriously won this year’s women’s competition.

“There were 17 teams nominated for the women’s opens this year, and we won two to nil in the grand final. I was in disbelief, couldn’t believe we came from 12 months ago, and lost, to this now to win it, it’s an unreal feeling,” she said.

“It’s so good to know I’ve put in the hard yards to get the teams up and runIn 2023 Wellington Arts partnered with Mac Art, which is an educational enterprise of Macquarie Correctional Centre, and collectively delivered two outstanding art exhibitions for our Central West region.

Both events attracted a multitude of art appreciators, plus family and friends of the resident artists making the excursion to attend the exhibitions with literally thousands of visitors attending the two events, ‘Con Artists and Inside Art’.

The most recent exhibition, ‘Inside Art’, was held in MQCC with limited tickets to this unique experience of viewing and purchasing art directly from the artists within a maximum-security Correctional Centre.

The entire concept and planning was made possible with Wellington Arts members meeting with the Governor, Officers and the residents to negotiate ‘terms and conditions’ of the event.

“People didn’t know what our team was about before, but they do now. We played a Sydney team in the competition, and they said ‘we hope you win for what you stand for’ which was a big thing for them to support us in that way.

“We played with respect, showed good sportsmanship, all the same values Dad had. After our game we stayed and watched the A grade men play, then went back to pub and had a good drink, that’s what Dad would have done.”

The competition is a two-day event with at least two or three games being played each day in a knockout style with teams coming from all over the state.

The team is made up of people who Miss Fuller is close with and people who

were there for her, and those who want to do something in memory of Fred.

“We also take the women’s team to the Viking Challenge in Forster every March too which is a very similar set up of competition,” Miss Fuller said.

“The men’s team last year in Dubbo made it to the quarter finals, and this year they played for fun and were happy to have a drink and yarn about what Dad would get up to. The men’s team is led

by Jaydn, my partner and he does a lot behind the scenes. We sell polos and hoodies with our team logo on it, so a special mention to Jaydn.

“I’ve been wanting to make up this team for years, but I was too scared to do it, but he has been very supportive of my vision since I met him, and he said we should do it.

“It’s such a good thing to remember Dad by.”

However, they also felt that a commission being taken from their work by Wellington Arts was unfair, so we negotiated a lower percentage of commission after we discussed the role we actually play in promoting the event, curating and hanging the art along with the managing art sales. During this three-day art curation period a major appreciation and understanding of what it takes to display art was fostered and those involved now understand why we charge a commission to sell

artworks. The residents’ desire for this second exhibition in September was initiated after the grand success of the Con Artist Exhibition held in our Western Gallery in Wellington from January to March.

Those resident artists who were not privileged to attend, wanted to experience the euphoria of a highly acclaimed exhibition where people came to appreciate their artwork. A massive 244 artworks were hung and displayed with the assistance of the artists. A capacity crowd of visitors happily paid to attend the event and were given a unexpected but privileged eye-opening guided tour of enclosed artworks on

This partnership continues to grow as we look for further opportunities to enhance and engage with MQCC and Mac Art residents.

LAST WEEK I had the pleasure of attending a number of end-of-year award presentations wrapping up the 2023 school year and acknowledging the achievements of so many children.

It was also the week for HSC results and there were some truly incredible results across the Dubbo electorate, and I would like to extend my congratulations to all of those who completed the HSC in 2023. *** It was fantastic to attend the opening of the Trangie CWA Co-Working Space last week.

The Co-Working Space Project was funded by Women NSW through the ‘Investing in Women’ program and has involved CWA of NSW Halls in Canowindra, Dorrigo, Walgett, and Trangie and has enabled the installation of high-speed internet connections, security access systems and office equipment.

It means that the hall is now available to all members of the community to hire at an affordable rate, with the co-working spaces equipped to cater for the

likes of remote working, education and training activities, meetings, AV presentations and networking events. *** In a significant enhancement of emergency response capabilities VRA Rescue NSW has expanded its land, water and aerial capabilities thanks to grants and donations from Government, businesses, and local communities.

Saturday saw the handover of nine new specialist rescue vehicles, collectively valued at over $1.1 million. Of the new specialised vehicles, three light rigid vehicles will be stationed at Junee, Gulgong, and Mudgee, with six personnel carrier 4WD remote access rescue vehicles sent to Narrabri, Taree, Binalong, Central Coast, Mendooran, and Brunswick Heads.

Three Major Incident Support Trailers and two lighting towers will add to response capabilities to stand up additional equipment and resources during major incidents.

Dubbo and Narromine will also benefit from Specialist Breathing Apparatus and Confined Space Rescue equipment, the organisations specialised canine search and rescue squad

are now equipped with a specialised boat and VRA Rescue NSW proudly welcomed 13 newly qualified and accredited Remotely Piloted Aircraft System volunteer operators.

It was great to meet with VRA volunteers from across the State and see their enthusiasm and excitement firsthand. *** The NSW Seniors Festival celebrates and acknowledges the important roles that seniors play in our community.

Those are the words of St Mary’s principal, Leanne Clarke, upon wrapping up the 2023 year at the local school’s presentation evening recently.

The night celebrated the academic and sporting achievements of students, while the following day, the annual Change of Light Ceremony was held to farewell Year 10 students and welcome the incoming school leaders.

“This ceremony is a hallmark of St Mary’s, where the Year 10 students, as they prepare to tran-

sition to the next phase of their academic journey, symbolically pass on the light of leadership to the incoming Year 9 students,” Mrs Clarke said.

“It serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing legacy and responsibility each student carries as they progress through their education.”

The event was marked by a sense of unity and continuity, as the graduating students shared words of wisdom and encouragement with their younger counterparts.

The passing of the symbolic light represents the transfer of knowledge, experience, and leadership from one class to the next, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose within the St Mary’s com-

munity.

“We would like to wish our Year 10 students every success as they move forward in their journeys and hope that they look back on their time at St Mary’s fondly.

“As we bid farewell to 2023 and look ahead to 2024, we express our gratitude once again to the school community for the integral role played in students’ success this year.

THE HIGH Court recently handed down a ruling that the federal government cannot indefinitely hold people in immigration detention if they have “no real prospect” of being deported from Australia in the foreseeable future. The court said it’s unconstitutional.

We know that a number of these detainees have serious criminal records and histories. After the ruling, 148 people were released from detention and six have since been arrested for various offences, with one being charged with two counts of indecent assault in South Australia.

This is outrageous and shocking.

The government’s handling of this matter since the High Court ruling has been shambolic.

BY THE time council’s parks and gardens staff head back after a Christmas/New year break the grass (which was once lawn mowed regularly for more than 100 years) will be well over 100 centimetres high (that’s about three feet). Unfortunately, it seems that Wellington’s Cameron Park decisions are made by shiny pants wearers in Dubbo. No wonder we’re second cousins in maintenance decisions.

And, when whomever in charge decides to sort things out down the road, he/her/they may like to clean up the suspension bridge debris still there since November 2022 floods.

The protection of community members around Australia should have been paramount. As soon as the High Court decision came down, new legislation should have been ready to ensure that courts have the power to lock up those detainees that pose a threat to the community.

Those laws were finally passed during a late-night sitting in the final sitting week of Parliament recently.

Due to the serious concern about this issue in the Calare electorate, I supported the new laws but believe they could have been made even stronger.

These new laws are tragically too late.

For commencement of summer fallow I suggest a mix of crucial 1.2 litres per ha plus the addition of 1.4 litres of 24d amine per ha plus the adjuvant hot up at 1lt per 100lt of wash. *** The race to raise rates This is a list of rates by banks overseeing the 10 most traded currencies: US 5.5%, NEW ZALAND 5.5%, UK 5.25%, CANADA 5%, EURO ZONE 4%, NORWAY 4.25%, AUSTRALIA 4.35%, SWEEDEN 4%, SWITZERLAND 3.75 % and JAPAN 6%. *** GATUNL LAKE, which feeds the Panama Canal is drying up. NO RAIN has fallen over the past week and my lawns have had the sprinklers on all week in order to keep the grass green. No wonder I feel sorry for farmers and graziers when that wet breath from heaven doesn’t arrive.

Dubbo last Thursday the last sale of year 4145 prime cattle penned, a decrease of 2200 on previous week in a mixed quality yarding with young cattle making up majority of numbers. Cows were well supplied with limited numbers of heavy steers and heifers, not all the normal buyers in attendance. Trade young cattle firm, feeder steers and heifers fell 15 to 20 cents with steers selling from 238 to 31c/kg and heifers from 180 to 280c/kg. Due to hot dry summer conditions continuing restocker young cattle considerably down with young steers trading up to 334c/kg and the heifers toping at 296c/kg. A limited number of heavy steers and heifers fell 36 to 46 cents, cows down by 20 to 35 cents, restocker cows considerably dearer 90 to 222c/kg, the last figure being paid for Angus cows PTIC. Quotations calves 245, steer vealers 214 to 334, heifer vealers 168 to 296, steer yearlings 200 to 314, heifer yearlings 160 to 280, heavy steers 170 to 296, bullocks 190 to 232, heavy heifers 155 to 248, light cows 30 to 90, medium cows 110 to 193, heavy cows 140 to 222, bulls 140 to 266.

Dubbo last Friday store sale 530 head with a fairly good quality selection of steer and heifer weaners with some useful lots of cows and calves, five pens of dry cows. Competition limited with mainly local buyers, due to the hot conditions since the previous store sale and the prime market being easier all sections were cheaper. Steer weaners $320 to $975 for wellbred Angus in forward condition. Top quality Limousin-cross steers to $875, handy Santa Gertrudis steer calves made $730, steer weaners to 318c/kg with most weaners reaching 235c/kg and averaging 190 to 215c/kg.

Best of cow/calf units was mixed0-aged Angus cows with quality young calves at foot selling for $1475 while the remaining units made from $900 for plain Murray Grey cows to $1350 for Euro cross. the five pens of the dry

cows from $790 to $930.

Dubbo on Monday 9240 lambs with a drop of 4000 compared to last week. Quality dropped significantly with only a few pens of good quality heavies and trade types. Good numbers of White Dorpers and secondary Merino’s were present not all the buyers were present and the market was cheaper.

Trade lambs fell $40 with plain quality being a factor. Trade new season lambs sold for $90 to $147 while trade old lambs weighing 20 to 24kg ranged from $88 to $160. Heavy lambs were down $17 to $25 with quality being a factor, heavy old lambs over 24kg from $160 to $220, heavy new season lambs to $180. Trade Merino lambs fell $10 to $113, restocker lambs were around firm $65 to $100, hoggets down $14 reaching $102.

6520 mutton penned in mixed quality yarding, most grades $6 to $16 cheaper. Merino ewes from $10 to $64, crossbred ewes from $18 to $70, Merino wethers from $26 to $74, restockers were active paying $12 to $42 for Merino ewes and $10 to $25 for crossbred ewes.

Schute Bell report it is always positive to head into the annual three-week recess on a solid note. Seven out of the past 10 years have seen a positive result in this sale period with the average rise being 39 cents. Quantities on offer increased this week to make it the second largest weekly offering for this season to date.

This did not deter the trade with progressive gains being made over both selling days in the Northern region, it closed at 1273c/kg clean, a rise of 52 cents. The Southern region was required to sell over three days and gave back some of the gains on the final day. The headline market indicators weekly closing levels are at their highest for the season to date and have broken out of the six months sideways trend. The superfine gained the most ground with the rest of the market providing a good support 46,317 bales were sold with a passedin rate of 5.3%. The wool market recommences on January 8, 2024.

WEEKLY MARKET REPORT Week ending December 15, 2023 AWEX Northern Micron Indices Comparison

A great Christmas present THE BEST results for this selling season were seen in the Australian wool market during the last sale of the calendar year. Over the two selling days in the North, Merino fleece types made substantial gains with 18.5 and finer being the recipients of strongest competition. Skirtings were also in great demand, lifting between 30 and 50 cents, crossbreds had a small 5 cent lift nationally, and the beleaguered carding indicator managed to improve 6 to 23 cents. The only downside came on Thursday in Melbourne where they sold in isolation and saw the market retreat 5 to 10 cents. A stronger dollar couldn’t dampen the momentum even though it rose 1.7 cents since last week.

The EMI closed 35 cents better in AUD$ and 44 cents in US$.

The energetic bidding started from the first lot offered and was mainly between Chinese interests. European and Indian purchasing continues to be subdued with figures showing up to 25% less wool being bought by both countries in the three months since July. Hard to tell just yet whether this is a short-term opportunity, or the beginning of the changing of the guard for fine wool processing. Either way it shows there is diversity within the processing sector. With wool sales not resuming for three weeks, exporters continue to keep trading over this time with stock accumulated over time, particularly from the last month since the market has turned. Chinese orders tend to keep flowing over our Christmas and New Year period and we can see the opening sales in January continue like this week’s market. No doubt that the soft finish in the South could lead to a more challenging trading situation, but I think that the overall trend of the past four weeks will continue its push forward. We still couldn’t quite get to the 50,000 bale level last week, falling short by around 1000 bales. It may be achieved when we return in the second week of January. Tough stayer Will To Excel with Hawkesbury trainer James Ponsonby has covered plenty of territory over recent months.

Since mid-October the eight-year-old gelding Will To Excel has finished third at Wagga Wagga on two occasions over 2500m and 3200m, fifth at Moonee Valley over 3850m and fourth at Warrnambool over 4065m before winning over 2100m at Orange.

Mathew Cahill took advantage of the cutaway rail turning for home at Orange and Will To Excel ($2.15 fav) surged along the inside from well back to score by almost three lengths from Our City (Robbie Downey, $2.50) and Kyanite (Jake Pracey-Holmes, $6).

Seven-year-old gelding Gutsy came to Gayna Williams with mediocre form in South Australia and is now unbeaten at three starts for the Bathurst trainer.

Producing a strong run from back in the field, Gutsy (Clayton Gallagher, $1.70 fav) overwhelmed Kora Magic (Braith Nock, $6.50) and Apollo Star (Ronald Simpson, $7) in the 1000m Southern Cross Austereo Country Boosted Benchmark 58 Handicap.

Another recent addition to the Gayna Williams stable is Dundas, a 14-starts Maiden company five-year-old gelding from Queensland.

First up for Williams, Dundas (Clayton Gallagher, $3.80) charged home to beat the leader Violet And Blue (Mathew Cahill, $2.50 fav) and Dubai Oak (Pierre Boudvillain, $11) in the 1000m Ideal Conditions Country Boosted Maiden Handicap.

An impressive debut winner at Mudgee, the Annabel Neasham, Warwick Farm trained Redford ($1.20 to $1.30 fav) completed an Orange treble for Clayton Gallagher and again looked well above average when coming from near last and powering to an almost four-lengths win in the 1400m McSigns Class 1 Handicap from Girragulang (Michael Heagney, $9) and Poppy’s Girl (Emma Ly, $14).

Making it successive wins, the Rob Potter, Canberra trained Craving Magic (Jack Martin, $6) finished fast to win the 1290m Buckley’s Carpet Court BM 58 Handicap from Doola Teela (Jake Pracey-Holmes, $3.40) and Field Of Myrtle (Robbie Downey, $3.20 fav) while the Clint Lundholm, Dubbo trained Transplant defeated a good quality field in the 1400m Inland Digital BM 74 Handicap.

I am thinking of Christmas Day in particular. You start the morning early after a late night of planning. You open your technology presents (is there any other kind of present?) and play with them and learn how to take advantage of the features.

This is followed by a nice big lunch and a relaxing afternoon. Many people choose a movie to sleep in front of for the afternoon. It goes slightly outside my normal column but I am going to give you some movie recommendations to settle in front of over the break.

Many people are questioning the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in our modern world. There are times when life imitates art and then there are times when script writers are just very good at reading the tea leaves for our future.

Regardless, we would like to know if AI will be the death of humanity as we know it or if AI will be the saviour to our workforce and ageing population issues. Or maybe you just want some entertainment without thinking too much about it all.

First on the list is “Her” (2013). In a near future, a lonely writer develops an unlikely relationship with an operating system, voiced by Scarlett Johansson, designed to meet his every need. It brings into question the nature of future relationships with AI.

with Mathew Dickerson, Axxis Comworld In “WarGames” (1983) a young man, played by Matthew Broderick, finds a back door into a military central computer in which reality is confused with game-playing, possibly starting World War III. This is not so much a focus on AI as in blurring the lines between computers and humans.

“I, Robot” (2004) stars Will Smith as a police detective distrustful of the humanoid robots serving humanity. He investigates a crime that may have been committed by a robot, which contradicts the Three Law of Robotics. This leads him to a larger investigation involving AI and the future of human-robot relations.

Aussie Hugh Jackman features in “Chappie” (2015) with the movie depicting a future where crime is patrolled by a mechanised police force. When one police droid, Chappie, is stolen and given new programming, it becomes the first robot with the ability to think and feel independently.

The slightly cliched bolt of lightning is used as the trigger in “Short Circuit” (1986) where an experimental military robot gains human-like intelligence and consciousness after a lightning strike. ‘Number Five is Alive’ is the catchphrase that Johnny Five uses as it embarks on a jour-

ney to explore its self-awareness, challenging the ideas of life and artificial intelligence.

Alan Turing is sometimes referred to as the father of AI so in this list it is compulsory to include ‘The Imitation Game” (2014). This historical drama focuses on Alan Turing, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, and his team’s efforts to break the German Enigma code during World War II, highlighting the early stages of computer science and AI in the form of code-breaking and computational development.

Based on my love of Douglas Adams alone, I have included “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” (2005).

This involves a journey through space and features AI characters such as Marvin the Paranoid Android who has a “brain the size of a planet” and feels he is vastly overqualified to undertake the simple tasks he is given. We also hear from the supercomputer, Deep Thought, who calculates the answer to the meaning of life.

After these top seven, also consider “A.I. Artificial Intelligence” (2001); “Ron’s Gone Wrong” (2021); “WALL-E” (2008); “After Yang” (2021) and “Transcendence” (2014).

sport Golfing news Doug Ney and James Fleming are forceful Golf competitions are still being played over the Christmas and New Year break on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and of course, Saturdays.

Keirles Pharmacy Summer Competition has come to a close until the January 13.

The JimBob Cup for 2024 starts of January 6 when the top eight players from the Club Championships pry their skills against each other.

This Saturday’s event is an Individual Stableford.

Last Saturday was an Individual Stableford and Round 5 of the Keirles Pharmacy Summer Competition.

Saturday’s winner was Doug Ney who came away with the prize on a count back with 40pts. Runner-up and good to see James Fleming back on the course, who also finished with 40pts.

Prize winners were, Nathan Stewart, David Naveau 38pts: Kurt Cusack 37pts; Steve Kiss, Brad Conn 36pts; Rod Pedron, David O’Brien, Brad Manson, from Dubbo, 35pts; Ross Wales, from Wyong, Mitchell Cusack, Mathew Shephard 34pts on a c/b.

Gersbach Memorial NTP in two shots on the 15th went to John Donnelly. Stubberfield Toyota NTP’s prize winners were, 3rd Mac Harvey, 8th Brad Hyland, 14th David Naveau, 16th Joe Ryan. Jespresso Cafe Longest Drives went to Fletcher Ivey in A grade and Peter Holden in B grade.

Brent Eather Encouragement award was taken out by Tony Drew who did play the 18 holes to finish with his 21pts, congratulations on keeping your partners entertained.

Ladies played a 9-hole and 12-hole Stableford on Wednesday with Noella Baker having a great day out claiming both prizes with 18pts and 26pts respectively.

Runner-up was Wendy Slack-Smith who finished with 16pts and 24pts respectively.

Tuesday’s golfers played a Stroke event with Neale McCabe dismantling the course to win the day with a 69nett. Runner-up and only just,was Barry Bowman with a 70nett. Garry McNaughton claimed the Putting prize with 31.

Thursday’s golfers had quite a difficult day on the course with David Naveau claiming the win with 33pts. Runnerup with 31pts on a count back was Ashley Bullock. Prize winner, Garry McNaughton 31pts.

The Iberdrola, Bodangora Windfarm Twilight Golf Competition played Round 12 last week with Reid Armstrong claiming the day’s win with 33nett. Runner-up was Rex England who had 34nett.

Front nine holes are to be played this week.

Kierles Pharmacy Comp results from Round 5 saw Phoenix defeat Wuuluman Locksmiths 2up, Dirt Diggers defeated Wellington Mowers and Chainsaws 1up, Used Groceries defeated Maulers 3up, Snipers defeated Lowes Petroleum 5up, Lion of Waterloo defeated Whipper Snippers 1up, Kevaliers defeated Wellington Soldiers Memorial Club 5up.

In Their Sights Wellington Diggers Swimming Fashions Mount Rifle Club Club News Twenty senior and junior members participated in our weekly swim on Tuesday, December 12.

Lizzy George completed the senior events double winning both the 30 metre (0.19) and 50 Metre (0.34) swims.

Zacary Hill and Albert Rich took out the junior events while the Brace Relay was won by Colin and Bella Sheridan being 0.13 outside their time.

Our last swim for 2023 will be Tuesday, December 19 and we will return on January 9 next year.

New Members are always welcome. Membership is $2 per adult with the condition that you must be a member of the Wellington Soldiers Memorial Club and for juniors to swim an adult family member must also swim.
