Welcome to the spring edition of your members only P ZeroTM magazine. It’s been a storming start to 2011 for Pirelli, with the F1 season now in full flow and heading back to Europe as the weather begins to improve and we start to anticipate a hot sunny weekend at Silverstone in July...

By then who knows what the Championship will look like? Pirelli’s contribution to the new regulations has thrown F1 wide open, with closer competition and real wheel to wheel battles putting the focus firmly on driver skill and courage. This season has also seen more varied and interesting team strategies which has lead to some exciting developments.

Elsewhere, Pirelli has been busy developing the world’s first “green performance” summer tyre for SUV and crossover vehicles. It has also launched this year’s eagerly anticipated calendar, “Mythology” shot by Karl Lagerfeld. Closer to home, Pirelli has announced its winning PPC of the year and P ZeroTM members are also given the opportunity to win as we team up with British exhaust experts Longlife to offer a complete system in our exclusive competition.

Pirelli’s impact on F1 Pirelli tyres have emerged as a critical component of the major regulation changes introduced for the 2011 season along with the re-introduction of KERS and adjustable rear wings. In addition to creating closer, more exciting racing and more overtaking opportunities, the single tyre rule additionally aims to reduce testing and development costs for teams.

Key to Pirelli’s success has been to deliberately engineer compound degradation into the tyres so that they do not last the whole race distance, thereby encouraging team strategy variation. The response in the paddock has been very positive with team bosses generally accepting that whilst challenging, the degrading rubber has added to the excitement of the sport. More importantly the new changes have

been great for fans who in the past have been used to watching a ‘procession’ of cars; but are now on the edge of their seats witnessing some of the best track craft and passing manoeuvres in recent memory.

Pirelli has been able to draw upon a wealth of experience in F1 to deliver a wide range of compounds developed to suit every track, surface and potential driving condition on the 2011 calendar. This experience can be traced back through a particularly intensive involvement with the sport during what many consider to be the golden era of F1 - the 1980s. Supplying such famous teams as Benetton, Brabham, Tyrell, Minardi and JPS Lotus, Pirelli’s current F1 programme has been shaped over the years by direct development input from such F1 legends as Senna, Piquet, Mansell and Schumacher.

F1 tyre rules F1 regulations stipulate that all teams must use Pirelli tyres. Depending on GP and likely conditions, two specifications of dry-weather tyre are nominated from the P ZeroTM F1 range and made available to all drivers, who must use both specifications during the race, except in wet conditions.

Of the two specifications drivers are supplied with six sets of the harder ‘Prime’ tyres and five of the softer ‘Option’ tyres. In addition drivers have access to four sets of Intermediate tyres and three sets of wets.

From his Paris studio Lagerfeld created “Mythology”, a calendar that reflects one of his deepest passions for Greek and Roman mythology; tales of the origins of humanity told through the adventures of gods and goddesses, heroes and heroines. On a voyage back through time transported by the universal language of photography, “Mythology” takes us to the roots of classical civilisation and takes the Pirelli Calendar back to the Old World, where nearly 140 years ago a company was born that was to become a multinational organisation with operations in over 160 nations around the world.

The 36 photos that make up the 2011 Calendar show 24 different subjects including gods, heroes and myths. With his keen eye, Lagerfeld has ‘sculpted’ these photos both in terms of their aesthetic rigour and for the recurring references to the art of sculpture and its classical tenets. All of the photos are in black and white, which lends character to the images, exalts the beauty of the figures represented in sharp chromatic contrast, and gives them a certain three-dimensionality through the careful use of light.

“Actresses and models bring these new heroes to life and depict a new concept of the beautiful,” said Karl Lagerfeld, who, within the 2011 Pirelli Calendar, has offered up an idyllic, immortal representation of beauty. Beauty, youth, the veneration of form and desire depict this new concept of beauty and embody the modernity in mythology.

The Gods and Goddesses There are 21 protagonists of this edition: 15 female models, five male models, and the American actress Julianne Moore.

The female models include Italian models Bianca Balti and Elisa Sednaoui; Danish model Freja Beha Erichsen; Brazilian model Isabeli Fontana (also in the 2005 Calendar by Patrick Demarchelier and in the 2009 edition by Peter Beard); Polish models Magdalena Frackowiak and Anja Rubik; Australian model Abbey Lee Kershaw (who debuted in the 2010 Calendar by Terry Richardson); Indian model Lakshmi Menon; American models Heidi Mount and Erin Wasson (who debuted in the 2005 Calendar by Patrick Demarchelier); Russian model Natasha Poly; Dutch model Lara Stone and Canadian model Daria Werbowy (both of whom Peter Beard had also chosen for the 2009 Calendar); Austrian model Iris Strubegger; and Jamaican model Jeneil Williams.

The five male models are Baptiste Giabiconi and Sébastien Jondeau (French), Brad Kroenig and Garret Neff (American), and Jake Davis (British).

All Pirelli Performance Centres throughout the UK are tyre dealers who have been awarded PPC status for their highest possible technical standards and commitment to customer service. However, only one can be given the Pirelli Performance Centre of the Year award, after a rigorous selection process that includes mystery shopper visits.

Each Pirelli Performance Centre undergoes regular audits covering working practices, equipment and customer service. The centres are graded according to the pass level achieved: silver, gold and platinum. Each of the Pirelli Performance Centres is visited by a mystery shopper, independently appointed by Pirelli, who puts every aspect of the business through its paces. The Pirelli Performance Centre with the highest score then picks up the coveted award.
