Dive In, here are some of our favorite things to do in the area: boating and water sports on the famous Chain O’ Lakes, golfing at one of our area courses, hiking or biking along scenic trails, paddling our rivers and creeks, touring our museums, learning about our history and visiting our historic sites.
River Ridge Trail – This greenspace trail winds through the Waupaca Area linking parks, public and private lands. The trail includes paved and unpaved trails and only allows bikes on limestone or blacktopped surfaces.
Wau-King Trail – This is a 4 mile paved pedestrian and bike trail that connects the City of Waupaca with King and the Chain O’ Lakes area. One end of the trail is located near Shadow Lake in Waupaca by lower South Park, where in the summer you will find parking, bathrooms, and a small shelter. The other end of the trail is located in King near the Wisconsin Veterans Home. Enjoy walking this trail in either direction. While in King, be sure to check out their many shops and restaurants as well as the Wisconsin Veterans Home.
Road Biking Routes – Several routes available ranging in length from 4 to 35 miles.
Ice Age National Scenic Trail – Several segments traverse the Waupaca Area, including sections in Hartman Creek State Park, Emmons Creek State Fishery and Wildlife Area, and Skunk & Foster Lakes State Natural Area.
Tomorrow River State Trail – Converted railroad bed travelling from Plover to Manawa, with access in Scandinavia, just a short drive north from Waupaca.
Waupaca Chain O' Lakes Area is known for their widespread woodlands and rich farmlands which create the ideal habitat for wildlife. There are a variety of public lands open for hunting including: Mukwa Wildlife Area, eight State Natural Areas and Hartman Creek State Park.
If you are looking for great fishing; we’ve got it. Abundant fishing opportunities await you in the Waupaca Area highlighted by the Waupaca Chain O’ Lakes and complimented with nearby rivers, creeks, and trout streams.
We welcome you to visit Hartman Creek State Park! As park superintendent, it is my privilege and pleasure to invite you to explore and enjoy the many wonders our park has to offer.
Hartman Creek is a hidden jewel offering several recreational opportunities for all ages. Several lakes connect to the famous Waupaca Chain O’ Lakes, we offer opportunities for fishing, boating and a beach specifically designed to provide you with a great swimming experience. For those seeking to get out into the park and explore some of the parks many nook and crannies, several miles of trail are here for you to enjoy on our hiking, biking and equestrian trails.
During our summer season, many come to the park to enjoy a quality camping experience. We are pleased to provide you with 101 campsites within our family campground, featuring 25 electrical sites, two shower buildings, one with new shower stalls, and camp hosts on sites 23 and 844 to help you with any questions or concerns you may have. We frequently receive compliments on our campground for the beautiful, spacious sites and the quiet, peaceful experience people have to come to expect over the years. For larger groups, we offer a five site group campground that can accommodate up to 50 people per site.

The River Ridge Trail is part of a plan to preserve urban natural areas or “greenspace” in a non-motorized trail system that winds throughout the Waupaca Area. The first trail segment, a scenic loop of 1.6 miles, opened in fall of 1996. Since then, over 22 miles of trails have been designated. Bikes are allowed only on limestone or blacktopped surfaces. The trail lies in the tension zone between Wisconsin’s northern and southern eco-regions, an area of unique biological diversity. By linking parks and other public and private lands, the community and its visitors will be able to enjoy the wealth of natural features for years to come.

Chain O’ Lakes – There are several public boat landings located throughout the beautiful Chain O’ Lakes. They can be found on the map on page 24. For the Upper Chain, put in at Knight’s Landing or Marl Lake, where you will find non-motorized lakes offering you the perfect place to paddle at your own pace.
Crystal River – For canoeing, kayaking, or tubing, the Crystal River is where you will want to be. You can find access at the mouth of the river on the South end of Long Lake, Crystal River Canoe Kayak Launch, at Nelson Park by the Red Mill in Little Hope and at Shadow Lake in the City of Waupaca.
Waupaca River – This is a beautiful river that navigates through some beautiful parks. Enter at the intersection of Cobb Town Road and Highway Q with take-outs and parking available at the covered bridge on Covered Bridge Road and Brainard’s Bridge Park on Brainard Road. Or, for a quick trip through the City of Waupaca, enter at Rotary Riverview Park in Downtown Waupaca on Cooper Street, with take-outs on Royalton Street and at the River Ridge Trail Natural Area at the intersection of State Roads 22/54 and Godfrey Drive. New kayak and canoe launch located in Weyauwega. Exit at Waupaca County Gills Landing. Several marinas and outfitters with rentals and guide service available. See page 43 Services for a complete listing.
Experience the Waupaca countryside on our state designated rustic roads, beautiful in every season.
R-17: This scenic route south of Amherst travels Otto Road from US 10 west to Morgan Road, then south on Morgan Road to County T, passing through hilly, rugged terrain, forests and fields, offering glimpses of native wildlife and a boulder-strewn section of the Tomorrow River.
R-23: Scenic Rural Road begins in the historical Yankee town of Rural, travelling west crossing the Crystal River three times over picturesque stone bridges and through Hartman Creek State Park, ending at Hartman Road.
R-24: Extending west from Rural Road to the county line, Emmons Creek Road crosses a spring-fed trout stream and passes through several stands of native pines and hardwoods.
R-57: Travelling South Foley Road and Town Line Road between US 10 and WIS 54 just West of Waupaca. The Ice Age National Scenic Trail follows this route. Enjoy scenic beauty and the Waupaca River.
Enjoying the local waterways safely is a top priority. For additional information, contact the Water Patrol, DNR Water Management Specialist office, 715-524-5246, or visit www.WaupacaChainOLakesAssociation.com for additional resources.
Slow No Wake – There is a “slow no wake” speed limit in effect on the following lakes on the Waupaca Chain O’ Lakes: Dake, Minor, Sunset, Long Cove (a portion of Long Lake), Taylor, Otter, George, Bass, Nessling, McCrossen, Limekiln, Ottman, Beasley and the entire Upper Chain. State law also provides for a “slow no wake” limit in effect from ½ hour after sunset until sunrise on all lakes. Spencer Lake and Stratton Lake speed limits are “slow no wake”, except during ski hours. Portions of the Wolf River are “slow no wake” and marked with buoys. ENHANCED WAKES ARE PROHIBITED ON RAINBOW, ROUND, COLUMBIA, LONG, STRATTON, AND SPENCER LAKES.
Waterway Markers/Buoys – All official waterway markers, such as signs and buoys, are designed to assist boaters by marking unsafe areas, directing traffic through channels, preventing accidents, and protecting resources. Regulatory buoys are white and orange. Orange diamonds have warnings such as “shallow area” and orange circles to indicate a controlled area such as “no wake.” Green and red companion buoys indicate a channel. It is illegal to move, tamper with, or destroy any official marker, or to tie a boat to any marker. Notify the Water Patrol if a buoy is moved or missing.
Skin Diving/Swimming – Diving activities must be marked by a regulation diver’s flag, displaying one diagonal white stripe on a red background. The flag must be clearly apparent at a distance of 100 yards. It is unlawful to engage in underwater skin diving, scuba diving, or swimming outside a marked swimming area or beyond 150 feet from shore unless the location of such swimming or diving is marked. No person diving or swimming shall swim in any channel or established navigation lane or interfere with someone fishing. Boaters must stay 100 feet from divers unless the boat is part of a skin diving operation. A boat should accompany any swimmer crossing our lakes.
Fishing – Residents who are 16 years of age or older need a license to fish in any Wisconsin waters. A license is valid from April 1 to March 31. Fishing regulation pamphlets are available from the DNR. Fishing regulations must be followed.
Navigation Lights – Navigation lights must be on from sunset to sunrise and during periods of restricted visibility when under way. A center combination light or side lights on the bow must shine red to port (left) and green to starboard (right). A white stern light
must shine 360 degrees. Non-motorized boats must have a white lantern or flashlight that must be shown in time to avoid collision.
Right of Way Designations – Obey the rules of the road. When two motorboats are directly approaching each other, each boat shall bear to the right and pass the other boat on its left side. When two motorboats are approaching each other at angles or in a crossing situation, the boat on the right has the right of way. A boat granted the right of way shall maintain its course and speed, unless to do so would result in a collision. A boat may overtake and pass another boat on either side, but the overtaking boat shall yield the right of way to the boat being overtaken if necessary. Motorboats shall yield the right of way to sailboats, canoes, rowboats, or any other type of non-motorized equipment.

For nearly 10,000 years, the Menominee Indian Tribe occupied 10 million acres, including much of Waupaca County. The Menominee in the Waupaca area moved between large villages on Taylor and Otter Lakes on the Chain O’Lakes and camps along the falls on the Waupaca River. Other indigenous tribes in what is today Wisconsin also passed through the Chain O’Lakes, crossing over the “Indian Crossing Bridge” and traveling to other locations throughout the state. In 1848, a final treaty forced the Menominee to relinquish the last of their lands, including Waupaca. The following year, five white men from Vermont traveled west from Plymouth, Wisconsin in search of new lands. Before long, they journeyed up the Waupaca River, finding “The Falls” and making camp near the end of what is today North Main Street. As the city grew, “The Falls” was named Waupaca, taking its name from a Menominee word meaning, “the quality of light, or morning light on the water.” Waupaca steadily grew around the water, harnessing the power of the falls and welcoming many more settlers, including many Danish and Scandinavian immigrants.
With the arrival of the railroad in 1871, the Chain O’Lakes also began to grow as a tourist destination. In 1899, an electric trolley line was added to bring visitors from the Waupaca Depot to the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King and the former Grand View Hotel on Rainbow Lake. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the city of Waupaca continued to grow and became known as the “Potato Capital of the World,” shipping millions of potatoes out of the city. The downtown on Main Street thrived into the mid-20th
century, as did local business and industry. In recent years, downtown Waupaca, highlighted by the historic Danes Hall on North Main Street, has worked to preserve its historic buildings and highlight both longtime and new businesses. Today, Waupaca’s and the Chain O’Lakes’ history, along with the new stories and people that are now intertwined with our past, are important parts of what makes Waupaca and the Chain O’Lakes a vibrant and growing community.

Waupaca Railroad Depot
525 Oak Street (County E), Waupaca. (just north of the train bridge) At one time, the Waupaca Depot was a significant part of the Waupaca community and the first thing seen by travelers when arriving in Waupaca. In 1907, after a fire destroyed the previous building, the Wisconsin Central built a brand-new depot for this important tourist and shipping location. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, Waupaca was known as the “Potato Capital of the World” and shipped millions of potatoes out of the Waupaca Depot. In 1987, the railroad closed the building and it sat empty until 2004 when the Waupaca Historical Society purchased it. Since then, the historical society has worked to restore the building to its former beauty. The Waupaca Railroad Depot features railroad displays, model train layout and several outbuildings, including an original Soo Line potato car. The Depot will be open every weekend, Memorial Day through Labor Day, from 12-5 p.m. Also open for special events, rentals and tours by appointment.

Yellowstone Trail
City of Waupaca. In 1912, the Yellowstone Trail became proposed as America’s first transcontinental highway – from Plymouth Rock, MA to Puget Sound, WA. The name derives either from the people using the trail to reach Yellowstone National Park, or because of the stones painted yellow to mark the trail. The Yellowstone trail entered the City of Waupaca by what was the Bunker Hill School located on the south side of Highway 10 on County Road A. The Waupaca Area Chamber of Commerce and CVB has additional information about the Yellowstone Trail, and what sites travelers can see passing through the Waupaca Area.

Velkommen
Just a short drive north of Waupaca on Hwy. 49, you will find a thriving community of rich Swiss and Norwegian history. The present Village of Iola was the homeland of Redbird, an Indian Chief and brother of Chief Waupaca, after whom our county was named. Redbird’s daughter was Princess Iola, who, according to legend, left her native land to live as the wife of Chief Syracuse in her ancestral home in New York State. The first white settlers erected a saw mill at the head of a mill pond in the 1850's, followed by a post office and Methodist church. The Village of Iola was formerly incorporated in 1892. The immigration of the Norwegian ancestors took place between the 1860's and 1890's.
The Iola Old Car Show and Swap Meet put Iola on the map as the largest car show in the Midwest. Iola is rich in the natural beauties of wildlife, forestry and lake shores, making it a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.
Iola Historical Society
210 Depot Street, Iola. Visiting the Iola Historic Village and Museums, capturing the community’s Norwegian heritage, is a great way to view historic artifacts and structures from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Featured are the vintage 1894 Iola & Northern Railroad depot and its trackside caboose, a pioneer style log cabin, a replica of an 1897 one-room schoolhouse, the Helvetia Town Hall
built in 1919, and the authentically reproduced 1901 Iola Firehouse, with historic (1912-1942) firefighting apparatus displayed.
Among several unique exhibits featured in the main museum are the Towne Family Collection of Native American Artifacts, a tribute to Iola’s violin maker Bert Stromberg, and a recognition of World War II B-17 bomber pilot Lee Nelson, “Iola’s Humble Hero.” Displays in the machine shed feature agricultural, construction and manufacturing artifacts. The Society has in place 25 “Historic Iola” markers recognizing selected historic village sites. Open Saturdays in June – August, from Noon to 3 pm, or by appointment. See below.
