University and Athletic Administration

University President Director of Athletics

Dr. Lorraine Bernotsky Terry Beattie

Dr. R. Lorraine (Laurie) Bernotsky was unanimously named the 16th president of West Chester University by the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), effective July 1, 2024. A longstanding champion for public education and State System students, Dr. Bernotsky is a first-generation college graduate who leads the largest *R2 institution within Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education. Prior to being named president, Dr. Bernotsky held the position of interim president of Pennsylvania Western University (PennWest) as a loaned executive from West Chester University. Known for being a transformative leader in higher education, Dr. Bernotsky is prepared to help West Chester University chart its path toward the next 150 years.

As a collaborative and inclusive leader who is centered on student success, Dr. Bernotsky holds nearly three decades of progressive experience in higher education. She began her career at West Chester University in 1996 as a member of the political science faculty. When the opportunity opened to serve as associate provost and dean of graduate studies at West Chester University, she competed in a national search for the role and served for several years before becoming provost in 2015.

As West Chester University’s provost, Dr. Bernotsky successfully led the University’s Academic Affairs Division, which oversees approximately 850 faculty and is comprised of six colleges, as well as two schools, that offers more than 100 academic degree programs while also housing the Office of Institutional Research, the Center for International Programs (now the Center for Global Engagement), the offices of undergraduate admissions, enrollment management, financial aid, the graduate school, and undergraduate student support services.

Executive vice president was added to Dr. Bernotsky’s role in 2017 and, as the University’s second-in-command, she also assumed leadership of the University’s budget and labor relations function.

Recognized throughout the Commonwealth as a highly respected and effective higher education leader, Dr. Bernotsky was asked by Chancellor Daniel Greenstein to serve PennWest temporarily in the fall of 2022 as executive vice president and chief operating officer, providing guidance and direction in all operational areas. From October 2022 through June 2023, Dr. Bernotsky worked collaboratively in this loaned capacity to help strengthen PennWest’s operational excellence, strategic enrollment management systems, and long-term plans for financial sustainability. The positive effects of Dr. Bernotsky’s work ultimately led to her appointment as interim president of PennWest on July 1, 2023 by PASSHE’s Board of Governors; she assumed the role four months after her appointment as PennWest’s acting president and following the retirement of PennWest founding president, Dr. Dale-Elizabeth Pehrsson.

Terry Beattie begins his ninth athletic campaign as the Director of Athletics at West Chester University and 20th overall as a member of the Golden Rams’ athletic department. Previous to being named the Interim AD in 2017, Beattie served as the Associate AD overseeing facilities and game day operations. He also oversaw all of the grounds and equipment room operations for the athletic department.

A 32-year veteran in college athletics, Beattie recently spearheaded the development of the Michael Horrocks Emerging Leaders Institute at WCU, which provides leadership training and development to a select group of outstanding student athletes who, as recognized future leaders, will be taking on the mantle of leadership within their team sometime in the future.

In his eight years as the university’s athletics director, Beattie created a Sports Performance aspect to the athletic department implementing additional resources from which WCU student-athletes could benefit. His collaboration with a number of other areas on campus gives student-athletes access to mental health and sport psychology experts, an expanded and much improved strength and conditioning program as well as education on sport nutrition.

His work in the field of Sport Leadership Training gives West Chester University’s coaching staff and administrators access to some of the cutting edge research on how to become a better leader, coach and mentor to young adults.

He has also served on a number of strategic planning committee’s both within the athletic department and in conjunction with the university. During his previous 14 years in Southeastern Pennsylvania, Beattie has chaired search committees to replace head coaches and assistant athletic directors while coordinating scheduling for West Chester University’s numerous athletic facilities. He has also served on search committees on the university side.

Beattie supervised the athletic department’s nine on-campus facilities, including both John A. Farrell Stadium and Serpico Stadium as well as Vonnie Gros Field.

A member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Beattie was recently named the chair of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Athletic Administrators for the 2023-24 campaign. He has also served roles on the NCAA regional and national advisory committees overseeing selections to the NCAA Division II Tournament in a variety of sports.

EAST STROUDSBURG (11-12, 8-9)

Head Coach: Liz Flooks Career Record: (11-12)

Opening Tip... After a strong second half performance led the Golden Rams to a 58-38 victory over Shippensburg last Wednesday night, West Chester (12-12, 9-8) looks to move above .500 for the first time this season and stretch its season-long winning streak to five in a row vs East Stroudsburg (11-12, 8-9) on Wednesday evening beginning at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday night will be a true treat as it will see the top two forwards in the PSAC East and likely front runners for PSAC East Athlete of the Year in Michelle Kozicki and Emily Chmiel do battle for the second time this season. West Chester is 42-13 (.763) at home since November 2021, and to take it a step further, the Golden Rams are 36-6 (.857) at home since November 22, which includes the team’s 27-game winning streak at home, which was halted in December after starting in January 2023. West Chester is 85-33 all-time vs ESU after winning each of the last seven, including a 77-72 OT victory at ESU earlier this season, which was the team’s third OT win of the year. West Chester has not lost to East Stroudsburg since a three-game skid between the second meeting of the 2018-19 season and a sweep at the hands of the Warriors in 2019-20.

Happening Tonight... Tonight is the Golden Rams annual Corporate Partner Appreciation night as the Department welcomes its Corporate Partners to Hollinger to say thank you for their continued support of WCU Athletics. At halftime of the men’s game, West Chester will also have the chance to grant a Wish for a child and their family in partnership with Division II and Make-A-Wish.

WCU Women’s Basketball Notes ...After knocking off PSAC East leader Lock Haven on Saturday to open February, West Chester has caught fire, stretching its winning streak to a season-best four in a row while winning seven of 10 to earn a spot in the PSAC Tournament. Most recently, West Chester traveled to Shippensburg last Wednesday afternoon and used a dominant second half, which saw the Golden Rams outscore the Raiders 36-17 to coast to a 58-38 victory. West Chester trailed by one after the first quarter and led by just one (2212) at the half but stymied the Raider offense in the third quarter, holding them to just four points on 11.1 % shooting from the field to break the close game open and earn the victory after leading by as many as 25 with under four minutes to play. Michelle Kozicki led the team in scoring once again with 28 points on 12-of-19 shooting, finishing one rebound shy of her 16th double-double of the year, while Erin Daley picked up her first career double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds in the victory. West Chester shot 41.0 % (25of-61) from the field, including 20.0 % from beyond the arc, while also going a perfect 5-for-5 at the free throw line for the first time this season. Kozicki ranks second in the PSAC in scoring, averaging 21.1 points per game, while her 10.5 rebounds per game are fifth best in the league. The senior forward has 15 double-doubles to her name, including seven in as many games, which ranks her in a tie for third in D2 in double-doubles while also ranking second in the PSAC. Emily Chmiel of ESU leads the PSAC and D2 in double-doubles with 16. Kozicki has also scored 35 points twice since December 17, becoming the first player to score 35 or more twice in the same season since Leah Johnson, who, along with Mitzi Reitnouer, are the only two Golden Rams to accomplish this feat. Anna McTamney is second on the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 15.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. McTamney is seventh in the league in scoring, making West Chester the only team to place two players in the top 10 in the league in scoring. Erin Daley has turned in an excellent stretch of basketball for West Chester since a career-high 19 points vs Kutztown on 1/11, Daley has scored in double figures four times in six games, including an 18-point effort in the win at Lock Haven on February 1 and an 11-point/12-rebound double-double at Shippensburg last Wednesday night. The sophomore forward is now averaging 8.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per game heading into the final weeks of the 2024-25 regular season. As a team, West Chester averages 66.3 points per game on 39.8 % shooting from the field and 26.7 % from three-point range. West Chester also leads the PSAC and ranks fifth in Division II in free throw shooting, connecting on 79.4 % of its attempts at the stripe.

East Stroudsburg Women’s Basketball Notes...East Stroudsburg (11-12, 8-9) enters play as winners of three of its last four, including a 54-49 Alumni Day victory over Shippensburg on Saturday afternoon. On Saturday, ESU used an 18-7 fourth-quarter effort to erase a 42-36 deficit heading to the fourth and escape with the five-point victory. Led by 25 points and 10 rebounds from Emily Chmiel, ESU shot 41.9 % from the field in the victory, including 55.6 % in the third and 46.2 % in the fourth to overcome a nine-point second quarter, which saw the Warriors go just 2-of-9 from the field to trail by four at the half. Izzy Vogel was the lone other Warrior in double figures, chipping in 12 points off the bench along with six rebounds, which was also second-best on the squad. For the year, ESU enters play averaging 62.7 points per game on 40.4 % shooting from the field, including 25.9 % from beyond the arc, led by 22.5 points per game and 12.2 rebounds per game from Chmiel. Corrin Gill leads the Warriors in assists, averaging 3.4 per game.

Up Next for the Golden Rams ... West Chester will head to Bloomsburg on Saturday before playing its final two games of the year next week at home against Millersville next Wednesday and at Kutztown next Saturday.

EAST STROUDSBURG (19-5, 13-4)

Head Coach: Jeff Wilson Career Record: (425-207)

Opening Tip... After debuting in the NABC Top-25 last week, the West Chester University men’s basketball team (19-5, 14-3) will look to bounce back from a road loss at Shippensburg last week in a crucial game against rival East Stroudsburg (19-5, 13-4) on Wednesday evening. Wednesday night’s game will have major playoff implications as the Golden Rams enter play with a slim one-game lead over ESU in the PSAC East standings. With a win, West Chester will restore a two-game lead with three games to play, while a loss would drop WCU into a tie with ESU and give the Warriors a tiebreak over the Golden Rams.Should West Chester fall, the Golden Rams would need a Warrior loss in one of their final three games (at Mansfield vs. Kutztown vs. Lock Haven) to have a chance at the PSAC East Regular season crown. West Chester holds a 92-81 lead in the all-time series against ESU despite going just 1-4 in the all-time series, including four straight setbacks after a 2023 regular-season sweep, which marked the first time since 2009 that WCU completed a regular-season sweep of the Warriors. West Chester’s 106-98 victory over ESU in Hollinger in February 2023 is the team’s last win and last home win over the Warriors and is also believed to be the most the Golden Rams have ever scored against ESU. The Golden Rams fell to ESU earlier this season by a 77-68 final thanks in part to a big run midway through the second half, which halted WCU’s 12-game winning streak. West Chester will also be looking to remain unbeaten at home this season, entering play a perfect 12-0 in Hollinger in the midst of a 16-game home winning streak, which is the best in the PSAC and tied for fourth-best in Division II men’s basketball.

Happening Tonight... Prior to tonight’s game, West Chester will honor head coach Damien Blair for his 300th career win as the head coach of the Golden Rams. Tonight is also the Golden Rams annual Corporate Partner Appreciation night as the Department welcomes its Corporate Partners to Hollinger to thank them for their continued support of WCU Athletics. At halftime, West Chester will also have the chance to grant a Wish for a child and their family in partnership with Division II and Make-A-Wish.

WCU Men’s Basketball Notes ... West Chester dropped its first game as a nationally-ranked team since 2019-20 on Wednesday night, falling victim to a hot-shooting Shippensburg team that shot a stellar 60.6 % from the field in the first half to take a 50-38 lead into the halftime break en route to an 85-81 victory. West Chester outscored its hosts 43-35 in the second half and got back to within three but could not come back in the loss. Anthony Purnell Jr. scored a team and season-high 19 points on 6-of-14 shooting, but that was not enough to avoid the road upset. WCU shot 36.3 % from the field and 44.1 % from deep, with 15 makes in the setback. Elijah Allen has scored in double figures in 18 of his 23 games this year and led West Chester in scoring in 11 of those 18, including four of the last six, as the senior guard has helped WCU post a record of 9-2 in such games. Allen enters play on Wednesday night averaging 15.4 points per game, which remains the best on the team, while his 1.9 assists per game are third best on the squad. Josh Walker is fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 10.3 points per game, while his 7.4 rebounds per game is first on the team. Dylan Blair continues to rank in the top five on the team in scoring, averaging 10.4 points per game as well as 4.3 assists per game, which is sixth-best in the PSAC in the season’s final weeks. West Chester enters play averaging 77.9 points per game on 42.4 % shooting from the field, including 32.6 % from beyond the arc. The Golden Rams also hold a 42.5-35.2 lead in rebounding, which remains seventh-best in Division II and second-best in the PSAC, including a 16.3 offensive rebound per game average, which is sixth best in the Nation.

East Stroudsburg Men’s Basketball Notes...East Stroudsburg (19-5, 13-4) enters play on a six-game winning streak after a 91-74 victory over Shippensburg at home on Saturday afternoon. ESU jumped out to a 47-31 lead at the half and used this advantage to coast to the 17-point road victory. Lakeem McAliley scored 30 points, and ESU shot 53.2 % from the field, including nine makes from three-point range to improve to 19-5 on the year and remain a game back of WCU in the league standings. For the year, ESU enters play averaging 86.5 points per game on 46.2 % shooting from the field, including 34.4 % from three-point range. The Warriors hold a 37.3-33.8 lead in rebounding and a 19-5.15.0 lead in turnovers entering play on Wednesday night. McAliley leads the team in scoring, averaging 19.3 points per game, while his 5.2 rebounds per game are second-best on the squad, trailing only Jalen Pichardo, who averages 6.7 per game. Evan Morton is second on the team in scoring, averaging 13.1 points per game, while also leading in assists, averaging 3.1 helpers per game.

Up Next for the Golden Rams ... West Chester will head to Bloomsburg on Saturday before playing its final two games of the year next week at home against Millersville next Wednesday and at Kutztown next Saturday.

2024-25 West Chester University Cheerleaders

From late August through early-to-mid March each school year, West Chester University’s cheerleaders are front and center at all Golden Rams football games in the fall and both men’s and women’s basketball games in the winter. Additionally, West Chester University’s cheerleaders have traveled to Orlando, Fla., and the Wide World of Sports in January to compete in the UCA Nationals. The Golden Rams Cheer Squad placed among the top five at UCA Nationals in each of the past four years, including a national championship effort last winter and a runner-up performance in 2023.

The cheerleaders work hard in the preseason learning mostly new material for the upcoming campaign, conditioning and developing a pride in the West Chester University community. Aside from preparing their 35-member team for the year ahead, the West Chester University cheerleaders also host high school clinics in order to develop cheerleading around the area.

The West Chester University cheerleaders take on many community service projects focusing mainly on breast cancer awareness, as well as doing many youth and high school cheering clinics, donating to needy schools and volunteering with the elderly within the West Chester community.

The team also makes many public appearances as representatives of WCU, highlighted each holiday season with a spot in the borough’s annual Christmas Parade.
