2023-2436thWest Chester Basketball Carol Eckman Memorial Classic Presented by Hampton Inn Exton/Downingtown Bloomsburg, Elizabeth City State, Livingstone

The Carol Eckman Memorial Classic celebrates its 36th Anniversary this weekend as Bloomsburg University, Elizabeth City State University, and Livingstone College descend upon Hollinger Field House and join host West Chester University in honoring one of women’s college basketball’s pioneers. The tournament is named in honor of former West Chester University head coach, Carol Eckman, who passed away from cancer in 1985. She helped organize the first women’s college basketball postseason tournament in 1969, which was played and won by West Chester University inside Hollinger Field House. That tournament, sponsored by the CIAW (Commission of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) is considered by many to be the first women’s basketball national championship. The Carol Eckman Memorial Classic has been known by many names over the past 36 years, including: WCU Alumni Association Memorial Tournament in honor of Carol Eckman and the Dial Soap Tournament in Memory of Carol Eckman. The Carol Eckman Classic was a true “tournament” with a champion, tournament MVP and all-tournament team from its inception in 1986 thru 2001. Since 2002, the format has been adjusted to a round-robin format so that PSAC Eastern Division rivals West Chester University and formerly Millersville now Bloomsburg University do not play one another. Four former participants in the Carol Eckman Classic are now Division I institutions (Longwood, Mount St. Mary’s, Navy and Quinnipiac). Millersville participated in the Carol Eckman Classic from 2002 thru 2011. The Marauders’ 14 appearances in the Classic are the most by any visiting school. Former Millersville head coach Mary Fleig played for Carol Eckman during her college career at Lock Haven University. West Chester University is 43-23 in the Carol Eckman Classic. Elizabeth City State is a first-time participant in the Carol Eckman Classic, and Livingstone makes its second appearance. West Chester split its contests in the 2021 edition, besting Wheeling on day one by a 73-61 final before falling to Glenville State by a 95-75 final on the second day of the Invitational. West Chester University won the Carol Eckman Classic a record three times (1996, 2000, 2001), before the format changed to its current setup. Millersville won the crown twice (1997, 1998). A PSAC school won the Carol Eckman Classic every year from 1995-2001. PSAC schools won nine of the 16 championships. WCU head coach Kiera Wooden, currently in her 10th season leading the Golden Rams, was named the Most Valuable Player of the Carol Eckman Classic in 2000. Women’s Basketball Notes ... West Chester posted a record of 24-9 overall and 18-4 in PSAC play last season. Its season came to close with a 88-63 loss to 2022 National Champion Glenville State in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, the furthest any West Chester basketball team has advanced in the DII Tournament. The Golden Rams 24 victories a season ago tied for the most under head coach Kiera Wooden and is also the second most in program history. Up next ... Following the Carol Eckman Memorial Classic, West Chester will continue its four-game homestand with a matchup against Wilmington on Saturday, November 18 beginning at 1 p.m. before concluding its homestand on November 20 against Chestnut Hill with opening tip set for 5:30 p.m.

A Legend of the Game – Carol Eckman In the history of women’s intercollegiate basketball, that person was Carol Eckman, and West Chester University is truly fortunate to have such an intimate relationship with one of the giants of the game’s past. For Carol Eckman, coaching at West Chester State College from 1967 through 1972 proved fruitful not only for her own winning percentage, but for all of women’s basketball. Her legacy lives on as one of the original pioneers in the sport.

During her tenure at West Chester, Eckman’s women compiled an astonishing 67-7 record, including 36 wins in 38 games over her first three seasons. Her accomplishments at West Chester were, and still are, recognized throughout the country. But Eckman’s largest contribution to intercollegiate women’s basketball came in 1969 when she organized the first National Invitational Women’s Basketball Tournament held at West Chester. It was only a prelude of what was to come in women’s basketball. Her foresight and vision are the foundation on which today’s game thrives. Soldout arenas and March Madness were all born from Eckman’s original ideas some 40 years ago. Eckman led the Lady Rams to the very first national championship in women’s college basketball in 1969 and three

successive runner-up finishes from 197072 in the newly formed AIAW National Tournament – the precursor to today’s NCAA National Championship. Eckman’s achievements include receiving the prestigious Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Service Award in 1985. She has been nominated for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. In addition, the WBCA honored her by placing an award in her name to the coach who most exemplifies Eckman’s own philosophies and attitudes in coaching. Many of today’s top level coaches were tutored by Eckman. Eckman completed her career at Lock Haven University, where she taught until passing away in 1985.
