Schon lacht der holde Frühling

(Already the lovely spring is smiling )

Already the lovely spring is smiling upon meadows rich with flowers, where gentle Zephyrs play together in cheerful company.

Though on every branch young blossoms now appear, still no quiet comfort returns to this poor heart of mine.

There I sit and weep alone upon the field, not for my lost little lamb, no, only for the shepherd Lindor.

Kennst du das Land

(Do you know the land)

Do you know the land where the lemons blossom, Where oranges grow golden among dark leaves, A gentle wind drifts from the blue sky, The myrtle stands silent, the laurel tall, Do you know it?

It is there, it is there I long to go with you, my love.

Do you know the house? Columns support its roof, Its great hall gleams, its apartments shimmer, And marble statues stand and stare at me: What have they done to you, poor child? Do you know it?

It is there, it is there I long to go with you, my protector.

Do you know the mountain and its cloudy path? The mule seeks its way through the mist, Caverns house the dragons’ ancient brood; The rock falls sheer, the torrent over it, Do you know it?

It is there, it is there Our pathway lies! O father, let us go!1

Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt

(Only those who know longing )

Only those who know longing

1 https://oxfordsong.org/song/mignon-kennst-du-das-land-3

2 https://oxfordsong.org/song/nur-wer-die-sehnsucht-kennt

Know what I suffer! Alone and cut off From every joy, I search the sky In that direction. Ah! he who loves and knows me Is far away. My head reels, My body blazes. Only those who know longing Know what I suffer!2

So lasst mich scheinen (Thus let me seem)

Let me appear an angel till I become one; Do not take my white dress from me! I hasten from the beautiful earth Down to that impregnable house.

There in brief repose I’ll rest, Then my eyes will open, renewed; My pure raiment then I’ll leave, With girdle and rosary, behind.

And those heavenly beings, They do not ask who is man or woman, And no garments, no folds Cover the transfigured body.

Though I lived without trouble and toil, I have felt deep pain enough. I grew old with grief before my time; O make me forever young again! 3

Dopo la pioggia (After the Rain)

The sky turns blue again. Swallows soar together, like fish beneath the birch trees. Do you feel like weeping?

White trees and blue birds soon become the golden screen of your soul. Do you feel like weeping?

My eyes meet yours

3 https://oxfordsong.org/song/so-lasst-mich-scheinen

within a little sun. You smile.

Ninna -Nanna (Lullaby )

Sweet sleep comes riding on a horse, until the rooster’s cry is heard. Nanna, nanna, oh!

Clip-clop, clip-clop the hooves draw near, I can hear them coming. Breathing roughly like the wind, brushing past the flowers along its path. What falls is not snow. Nanna, nanna.

Sweet sleep grows lighter, the horse is tied to the gate. Nanna, nanna.

The horse waits restlessly outside, and each time it shakes its head, the great door trembles. Its bells ring like a feast. Nanna, nanna.

The child drifts into sleep.

Primavera divina (Divine Spring )

At times, I dream of the divine spring, and my dream turns me into spring itself. Hearing the nightingale’s song within my mind, I feel the trembling of flowers.

I sense the cool waves drawing near, and the chilly wind piercing my heart. However long I gaze and imagine, whatever is sublime and whatever is beautiful makes me sigh with boundless longing as if I myself were the eternal spring.

Air des bijoux (The Jewel Song )

Oh God-what jewels! Is this a pleasant dream that is dazing me? Or, what if I am awake? My eyes have never seen such opulence!

If only I dared

to adorn myself for a moment with these earrings!

Ah! Here is just what I need, at the botton of the box: a mirror! How not to be conquettish?

Ah! I’m smiling, seeing myself so beautiful in this mirror! Is it you, Marguerite?

Answer me; answer quickly! No, it’s no longer you! It’s no longer your face; it’s the daughter of a king to whom people bow as she passes! Ah, if he were here! If he could see me like this!

Like a lady of gentility he would find me beautiful!

Let’s complete the transformation. I’m most eager to try

The bracelet and the necklace! God! It’s like a hand That sets itself upon my arm! Ah!

Ah! I’m smiling, seeing myself so beautiful in this mirror! Is it you, Marguerite?

Answer me; answer quickly! Ah, if he were here!

If he could see me like this!

Like a lady of gentility he would find me beautiful! Marguerite, it is no longer you! It’s no longer your face; it’s the daughter of a king to whom people bow as she passes! 4

Ariettes Oubliées (Forgotten arias)

C'est l'Extase Langoureuse

(It is the langorous ecstasy)

It is the langorous ecstasy, It is the fatigue after love, It is all the rustling of the wood, In the embrace of breezes; It is near the gray branches: A chorus of tiny voices.

Oh, what a frail and fresh murmur! It babbles and whispers, It resembles the soft noise That waving grass exhales. You might say it were, under the bending stream, The muffled sound of rolling pebbles.

This soul, which laments And this dormant moan, It is ours, is it not? Mine, and yours too, Whose humble anthem we breathe On this mild evening, so very quietly?

Il pleure dans mon cœur (There is weeping in my heart)

There is weeping in my heart like the rain falling on the town. What is this languor that pervades my heart?

Oh the patter of the rain on the ground and the roofs! For a heart growing weary oh the song of the rain!

There is weeping without cause in this disheartened heart. What! No betrayal? There's no reason for this grief.

Truly the worst pain is not knowing why, without love or hatred, my heart feels so much pain.

L'ombre des arbres (The shadow of the trees)

The shadow of the trees in the misty river fades and dies like smoke; while above, among the real branches, the doves are lamenting.

Oh traveler, how well this pale landscape mirrored you pallid self! And how sadly, in the high foliage, your hopes were weeping, your hopes that are drowned.

Chevaux de bois (Merry-go-round)

Turn, turn, fine merry-go-round turn a hundred turns, turn a thousand turns,

turn often and turn always, turn, turn to the sound of the oboes.

The red-faced child and pale mother, the boy in black and the girl in pink, the one pursuing and the other posing, each getting a penny's worth of Sunday fun.

Turn, turn, merry-go-round of their hearts, while all around your turning squints the sly pickpocket's eye turn to the sound of the victorious cornet.

It is astonishing how it intoxicates you to go around this way in a stupid circle, nothing in your tummy and an ache in your head, very sick and having lots of fun.

Turn, gee-gees, without any need ever to use spurs to command you to gallop around, turn, turn, with no hope for hay.

And hurry, horses of their souls hear the supper bell already, the night that is falling and chasing the troop of merry drinkers, famished by their thirst.

Turn, turn! The velvet sky is slowly clothed with golden stars. The church bell tolls a mournful knell Turn, tomerry beating of the drums.

Green (Green)

Here are some fruit, some flowers, some leaves and some branches,

And then here is my heart, which beats only for you. Do not rip it up with your two white hands, And may the humble present be sweet in your beautiful eyes!

I come still covered with dew, that the morning breeze has chilled on my brow. Let my weariness, resting at your feet, Dream of dear moments which will bring repose.

On your young breast allow my head to rest, Still ringing with your last kisses; Let it calm itself after the pleasant tempest, And let me sleep a little, since you are resting.

Spleen (Spleen)

The roses were all red And the ivy was all black. Dear, it only needs one move from you For all my despairs to reawaken.

The sky was too blue, too tender, The sea too green and the air too mild. I fear all the time, ever waiting, Some terrible flight from you.

Of the holly with its varnished leaf And of the shining boxwood I am weary And of the never-ending countryside, And of everything, except you. Alas!

They Might Not Need Me

They might not need me yet they might I’ll let my Heart be just in sight A smile so small as mine might be Precisely their necessity

Over the Fence

Over the fence

Strawberries grow

Over the fence I could climb if I tried, I know Berries are nice!

But if I stained my Apron God would certainly scold! Oh, dear, I guess if He were a Boy He’d climb if He could!

Wild Nights

Wild Nights Wild Nights! Were I with thee Wild Nights should be Our luxury!

Futile the Winds To a Heart in port Done with the Compass Done with the Chart!

Rowing in Eden Ah, the Sea! Might I but moor Tonight In Thee!
