Westminster Celebrates 60 Years!

By Scott Jones Head of School Westminster Christian School started with a small group of families and a big vision 60 years ago. Throughout the decades, Westminster has made an impact in the community and established a presence as one of the leading independent Christian schools in Florida. Westminster will continue to empower learning, prepare hearts, and inspire lives for decades to come.

Westminster has grown from twelve students in a single building to 1280 students on a 31-acre campus noted for its beauty. In recent years, the school has added athletic fields, a new elementary school, high school

science and engineering spaces, the WorldWonder Nature Center and botanical gardens, and a state-of-the-art performing arts center.

During the past 60 years, Westminster has expanded its academic and extracurricular programs to meet the needs of students in a changing world. Rigorous academic programs such as Project Lead the Way, Emerald Scholars, as well as AP Capstone and other research opportunities provide students with transformational learning experiences while challenging them to achieve at the highest levels. Westminster has a long history of excellence in athletics and has continued to expand its program to provide opportunities for students in many sports at all age levels.

Social and spiritual experiences have been a core commitment of Westminster in developing community with others and connection with God. One of Westminster's flagship programs, Warrior Week, is one way that the school promotes community and spiritual growth by starting every school year with an off-site weeklong retreat for high school students.

All Westminster academic, arts, athletic, social, and spiritual programs are designed to prepare students for their next chapters of life.

As Westminster continues to refine its programs to prepare students for a rapidly changing world, the school has maintained its clear and consistent focus on its Christian values and ethos, unwavering in the

commitment to prepare students to be ambassadors and representatives of the Christian faith.

Looking ahead, Westminster will build upon the foundations of its sixty-year history. The school will focus on its core value of excellence such that this value is evident in every aspect of the school. Westminster will continue to add and improve its programs to serve students and families. One program that is in development is a program for elementary students with language-based learning disabilities such as dyslexia. The school will continue to prepare students to enter competitive universities as it has in recent years, and it will further strengthen efforts to prepare students to engage with culture as ambassadors for the Christian faith.

Additional campus improvements in the coming years include a new athletic complex, improvements to high school learning spaces, and a new middle school. The school has been known for its sense of community, family, and belonging, and Westminster is committed to intentionally strengthening its efforts toward investing in these aspects of the school's identity.

Westminster is grateful to its families, students, alumni, and faculty, as well as to the Palmetto Bay community for the support and partnership over the past six decades. We all look forward to building foundations for a strong and sustainable future to serve future generations for decades to come.

A Community with Christ at the Center

By John Bishop Westminster’s Director of Spiritual Formation I was recently having a conversation with a family after they’d spent a couple hours touring around Westminster. Their first comment was one that I have grown accustomed to expecting, “Everyone is so welcoming here!”

As I asked them to describe their experience, they talked about a group of students who stopped, and went out of their way to answer questions and be helpful. They had reconnected with an old friend they hadn’t realized was part of the WCS community. They saw people from their church and recognized other students, faculty, and staff from their community. They were surprised how, after such a short amount of time, they already felt like they were at home.

I wouldn’t make a big deal about this one conversation, but it has been the common refrain from many conversations I’ve had with people coming to Westminster. In fact, I was recently hired at the school and when I walked around the school this past summer, I described my experience in much the same way.

In 1961, a group of Christian parents and community and church leaders laid the foundation for an “Institution for Christian education…in order that this educational program may bring glory to God.” These visionary leaders foresaw a school environment that would function as an extension of their own families. One that would welcome people in and help them grow in their Christian faith while pursuing excellence in education and readiness for life.

Building on that original charter, today we would say we are empowering learners, inspiring lives, and preparing hearts to serve as ambassadors for Christ. Our faculty, staff, and administrators are committed to supporting students and families in their faith, walking with them through life’s challenges and calling them to the higher standard of living for Christ. It, therefore, becomes an easy decision to prioritize engaging, spiritually focused chapels each week for elementary, middle, and high school students.

We are a school that strives to live up to our mission and vision and we’re proud of what we’ve built! We’re proud of the students who stopped to be helpful, we’re proud when our community rallies in support of families who suffer loss, we’re proud when our students use their gifts and

talents to bring glory to God. We’re excited to see what the future holds as we continue to grow in our identity and calling not just as a great academic institution, but as a Christ-centered school.

Emerald Scholars Program Graduates First Class For the first time ever, Westminster’s Class of 2021 included 14 students who graduated as Emerald Scholars. These students represent some of the high school’s most driven and brightest students.

Emerald Scholars participate in Westminster’s most ambitious academic courses and are provided with opportunities for enrichment through internships, independent research, service projects, and more. To graduate as an Emerald Scholar, students take a minimum of 12 AP courses, complete the AP Capstone Program or PLTW Engineering Program, as well as meet GPA, service project and internship requirements.

Besides graduation honors, students receive a custom emerald and gold charm or pin along with a keepsake box.

Students may apply to the program as early as the end of eighth grade, and must meet a series of stringent academic standards in addition to a written essay and a letter of recommendation to be considered for admission.

“The Emerald Scholars program underscores the goal of a Westminster education by preparing Christian leaders who are able to think critically, collaborate effectively, seek innovative solutions, and be examples of excellence in their communities,” said Alex Gonzalez, Westminster’s High School Principal.

This past year’s program graduates are attending some of the nation’s top universities. The Legacy of Westminster Athletics

Westminster Athletics has a tradition of excellence that spans more than 60 years. The athletic program at Westminster provides an opportunity to learn life lessons, develop character and skills that will help its student athletes reach their full potential while striving for excellence and developing future leaders.

Westminster athletes and teams have been

crowned National and State Champions numerous times and have earned countless District and Regional Championship titles.

Westminster Athletics is rooted in Christian values, commitment and discipline that has produced major-league athletes, players on professional tours and many college athletes.

At Westminster, student athletes are encouraged to glorify God through their physical abilities and to reach their full potential in the athletic arena. Westminster athletes also grow in their faith by participating in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and are encouraged to bond with their teammates by collaborating on community service projects.

Our athletic facilities provide a quality environment for our athletes and teams. Two primary fields serve football, soccer, lacrosse and baseball. A brand-new, multi-purpose athletic field has also been added to accommodate our expanding athletics program. Track and Field enjoys a rubberized, state-of-the art six-lane, 400meter track. The Warrior Baseball Complex boasts a beautiful clubhouse. The Robert W. Rust Athletic Facility houses our basketball and volleyball teams, as well. A six-lane, 25-meter swimming complex is home to the Warriors swim team. Adjacent to the pool is the tennis/basketball court, which provides additional practice areas for multiple teams.

Westminster envisions expanding and improving its athletic facilities in the near future with the goal of becoming the premier high school athletic complex in the country, upholding its legacy for excellence and innovation.

Warriors Induct New Members to Athletic Hall of Fame On September 30, 2021, three new members were inducted into the Westminster Christian School Athletic Hall of Fame. This year’s inductees are Jordan Cronkrite ‘14, Tim Irvin ‘14, and Kelli Kleis ‘14.

Jordan Cronkrite ‘14, Football, was a member of the 2013 State Semifinal Football Team. He earned 2nd Team All-Dade in grade 10, and 1st Team All-Dade in grades 11 and 12. Also during his senior year, he was named 1st Team All-State and a United States Army All-American, finishing his high school career with over 3,000 rushing yards and 33 touchdowns. He continued his football career at the University of Florida and University of South Florida. At USF, he rushed 1,000 yards as a junior, and finished his collegiate career with over 2,000 rushing yards. He also played basketball at Westminster.

Tim Irvin ‘14, Football, was a member of the 2013 State Semifinal Football Team. He earned 1st Team All-Dade in grades 9, 10, 11 and 12. During his senior year, he was also named 1st Team All-State and a United States Army All-American. He was also rated

by Scout and Rivals as a top 50 player in Florida, finishing his high school career with over 2,000 rushing yards, 1,000 receiving yards, and 43 touchdowns. He continued his football career at Auburn and ECU. At Westminster, he also played basketball and ran track.

Kelli Kleis ‘14, Softball, was a member of the 2014 State Championship Softball Team.

She was 1st Team All-Dade and 1st Team AllState in grades 10, 11 and 12. During her senior year, she was named Dade County Pitcher of the Year, State of Florida Pitcher of the Year, and MVP of the 2014 State Championship Game. Her senior year record was 23-2 with 152 Ks and a .145 ERA. She continued her softball career at University of Northern Colorado.

They join nearly 80 alumni who have made a positive impact on the school's athletic program through their athletic abilities and Christian witness. Hall of Fame members graduated from Westminster at least three years prior to induction and demonstrated a clear Christian testimony while at Westminster.

The Lighthouse Performing Arts Center Shines on Campus Westminster Christian School unveiled its brand-new performing arts center, the Lighthouse, ahead of schedule in fall 2020. In spite of the pandemic, the Fine Arts department managed to safely host limited events during the inaugural year.

The Lighthouse features a state-of-the-art auditorium with seating for nearly 650 and provides a top-notch performance environment for Westminster’s highly-esteemed, awardwinning fine arts program. It also offers classroom space, a two-story lobby to display student artwork, as well as practice and performance spaces for orchestra, band, choir, theater, dance, and more. This magnificent building was made possible by the generous donations from school families, alumni, teachers and staff, and friends of the Westminster community.

“This is a first-class, world-class facility that is recognized by everyone who walks through the door,” said Donna Underwood, Westminster’s director of fine arts. “We are so blessed that we can shine a light on the amazing God-given talents of our students in a venue like this.”

The Westminster Christian School Fine Arts program is known for developing creative and artistic expression that complements critical thinking and academic skills in students.

Westminster students have the opportunity to explore the arts through the following disciplines: band, choir, dance, theater, film, orchestra, and visual arts, which includes drawing and painting, photography, architectural design and sculpture. The fine arts curriculum is offered to students from preschool through grade 12, with focused instruction beginning in fourth grade.

In addition to the Lighthouse, The Lewis Fraser Art Building provides spacious studios where middle and high school students who study visual arts have all the tools necessary under one roof to hone their two- and three-dimensional artistic skills. The elementary school has its own art studio and music room where students learn and grow in the arts.

Westminster fine art groups routinely bring home top honors at competitions and travel annually to perform and/or enhance their arts education at locations nationally and internationally.

Westminster: How it All Began

Sixty years ago, a small group of dedicated Christians at Shenandoah Presbyterian Church sensed a calling to start a school characterized by excellence and devoted to a biblical philosophy of education. In the founding charter, they pledged to establish a school and educational program “propounding the highest of academic standards, so as to prepare covenant youth for purposeful Godliness in any vocation or entrance into leading institutions of higher education."

On September 6, 1961, Westminster Christian School opened its doors with this noble goal in mind: to provide an excellent Christian education to the children of Christian families.

Thanks to the vision and dedication of school founder Mr. Jules Vroon, and the leadership of many faithful men and women over the years, today Westminster is the standard for Christian education in South Florida.

Westminster began classes with 12 students and three full-time teachers at Shenandoah in 1961. In just two years enrollment had grown to 169 students and the Cutler Cove School, the location of our current elementary school, was purchased to accommodate the Westminster’s expanding enrollment. Just a few years later in 1970, an additional twenty acres were acquired, and the middle and high school buildings were completed. In 2015, five more acres were purchased to provide additional space for athletic fields, and the growing WorldWonder science exploration program that is part of the elementary curriculum.

Today, Westminster Christian School is situated on 31 lush acres and serves 1,280 students from preschool through 12th grade.

While so much has changed, Westminster Christian School’s mission remains the same.

Westminster graduates are beacons of light

throughout the world, serving as active and prominent leaders for Christ in their communities.

As the school reflects on all that God has done throughout these past six decades, we remain committed to being a Christ-centered institution of the highest standards, fulfilling the mission of developing ambassadors for Christ for generations to come.

Westminster Leads in Technology; Becomes Only School to Earn Microsoft Showcase Title for Five Consecutive Years

Westminster Christian School has long been a leader in technology and in pursuing innovations that support the learning experience for its students. These efforts have been recognized and rewarded as Westminster became the only school in the country to earn the title of a Microsoft Showcase School for five years consecutively. An exclusive honor, only 38 schools nationwide earned a Microsoft Showcase designation this year.

"We are extremely proud. Our faculty, staff and IT department have worked hard to ensure that the latest Microsoft technology is being used daily in the classroom," said Omar Valerio,

CIO, CTO and IT director at Westminster Christian School. “Our partnership with Microsoft allowed us to pivot quickly and effectively at the onset of the pandemic and allowed us to sustain a robust academic experience for our students.”

Microsoft Showcase Schools like Westminster are educational institutions that amplify the use of technology to drive school-wide digital transformation and efficiencies. They also emphasize personalized learning for their students through the use of 1:1 learning devices and learning with current technology such as Microsoft Teams, Office 365 Education, OneNote, and more.

The Microsoft Showcase School title is made possible through the collaborative efforts of Westminster administrators and educators.

Westminster IT Director Omar Valerio as well as four Westminster teachers were also named Microsoft Innovative Educator Experts (MIE).

Elementary school enrichment, technology and resource teacher Arlene Castellanos; middle school science teacher Kelly Gordon; Project Lead the Way and enrichment teacher Claudia Pastrana; and, high school art teacher April Sharpe-Shirk. The Microsoft MIE Expert program recognizes teachers who embrace the didactic potential and relevance of digital technologies and who use them innovatively in their lessons.

“Technology pushes education forward and makes everything easier,” explained Omar Valerio, Westminster's CIO. “The students are more engaged, more enthusiastic. They’re excited to come to school, participate and learn new things. Technology facilitates opportunities for them.”

Westminster is a one-to-one school for students from grade 3 through grade 12. Using Microsoft tools allows students to excel with technology by giving them the freedom to embrace it in a developmentally, ageappropriate manner.

Every student has a Surface Pro and an Office 365 account, enabling them to work more efficiently and fostering a collaborative learning culture. The school also offers a variety of Information Technology certifications, as well as a wide range of programs, from engineering to robotics. To grant more opportunities in this space, students have the chance to participate in the technology track and study subjects such as Aerospace Engineering and Coding.

Technology also enhances the process for teachers, allowing them to save time and be more well-organized. Through the Microsoft OneNote Class Notebook, teachers create a personal workspace for every student, content library for handouts and a collaboration space for lessons and creative activities. Moreover, teachers can provide direct feedback by writing in each student’s private notebook, encouraging students to work together as the teacher provides real-time coaching.

WorldWonder Program Continues to Expand

The WorldWonder program, created in 2004

by Westminster educator Doug Heetderks, is an experiential learning component of the life sciences curriculum at Westminster Christian Elementary School. The hands-on program inspires learning through exploration and instills an appreciation for God's creation by encouraging children to experience the thrill of touching, seeing, wondering and learning about the amazing world around them.

First housed in an outdoor chickee hut, today the WorldWonder program has grown to include the Discovery Barn, as well as a state-ofthe art Nature Center and most recently an expansive Wild Acre. The lush Wild Acre is

teeming with areas for students to explore and learn such as the Bamboo Forest, Timber Village, Aviary, and amphitheater, and also provides space for resident animals such as tortoises, dwarf goats, macaws, and more. Learning about these animals, how to care for them, and how the ecosystem works together is a unique aspect of the WorldWonder program.

“There is so much to be learned by simply interacting with God’s creation,” said Heetderks.

“Students get excited by what they are learning and are self-motivated to discover and learn even more. It’s a privilege to guide them and open their eyes to so many possibilities.”

Under the direction of program director Mr. Doug Heetderks and his assistant Mrs. Sharon Carper, students can traverse the bamboo forest to arrive at chalets where they can gather with friends to discuss their latest findings, or they can climb to the top of timber village or banyan tree forest and let their imaginations run wild.

All of the facilities that make up the WorldWonder program provide indoor/outdoor learning environments for students from preschool through fifth grade. Like an oncampus field trip, Westminster art students will visit the Wild Acre to inspire their drawings of foliage or the cascading waterfall in the pond.

Every discipline on campus can take advantage of these areas to expand the ways students learn and experience.

This signature outdoor science program is unique to Westminster and we are grateful to the generous donors from the Westminster community who support these innovations and make these programs possible for our students.

Our History & Important Milestones Westminster Christian School opened its doors on September 6, 1961, on the grounds of Shenandoah Presbyterian Church. Beginning the year with only 12 students, enrollment climbed to 40 students after the first few months. Three teachers served students in grades 1-8, under the leadership of Mr. Jacob Heerema, the first school principal. Just two years later, Westminster moved to its new and present location with an increased enrollment of 169 students, and 14 full-time and five part-time teachers. Mr. Daniel DeLange succeeded Mr. Heerema as principal, and under his able and persevering leadership, Westminster continued to move forward. By 1966, Westminster graduated its first class of students.

We believe that the hand of God has been clearly revealed in the striking history of Westminster Chrsitian School. To Him be the glory for what the school is now and for what it will be in the days to come.
