From the Head of School
Dear Collegiate Community,
Welcome to our Impact Report for the 2022-23 academic year. Within the following pages you will find information about the many ways Wichita Collegiate exceeded all expectations within this past school year. Our Vision states that we empower all students to lead lives of impact by partnering with our students, faculty, families, and community.
The following pages will highlight a multitude of different ways our students, faculty, parents, grandparents, alumni and donors have partnered with us to enable our school to impact our community in so many ways. Thank you to each and every one of you for your invaluable support. You will learn of the galvanizing experiences our students benefit from, and you will read about the many ways our students excel.
These pages are full of excitement and success stories that would not be possible without the amazing faculty, staff, board members, families, and community partners. I want to personally thank each and every one of you for your time, commitment, dedication and support over the past year. You are all integral to the success of our wonderful school.
As I look ahead, I am confident that our students will continue to thrive at their school and go on to make a lasting, positive contribution to our world. We are ready for 2023-24 and excited about the continued growth and success of Wichita Collegiate.
Gratefully,
Nathan Washer Head of School

From the Board
At the end of the 2022-23 school year, Basil Hourani’s three-year term as Chair of the Board of Trustees ended. Basil became Chair at a time when Collegiate, like other schools, faced one of its greatest challenges – the Covid 19 pandemic. Yet, unlike many schools, Collegiate emerged from the pandemic stronger than before. Over the past three years, Collegiate’s enrollment has increased 12%, the school is more financially secure, many grades have waiting lists, and the strong sense of community that is a hallmark of the Collegiate experience remains unwavering. Collegiate is better today because of the efforts of many – our faculty, staff, administration, students, parents, Board of Trustees and no small part through Basil’s experienced leadership and uncompromising commitment to do what is in the best interests of our students. That, in my view, is our North Star. If we stay true to the guiding principle of considering our decisions and actions through the lens of a fiduciary to our students, like Basil insisted we do, I am confident we will succeed in inspiring our students to be the best versions of themselves.
The Collegiate community is grateful for Basil’s thirteen years of Board service. On a personal level, I will miss his mentorship and assuring presence at our weekly Tuesday meetings.
As we send our best wishes to Basil for a well-deserved retirement from the Board of Trustees, we are thrilled to welcome the following new members to the Board for the upcoming year.

It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, nationality, or ethnicity in administration of its educational policies, admission policies, financial assistance, or athletic or other schooladministered programs.
ANNUALReport 2022-2023
It was another year of inspired giving at Wichita Collegiate. The generosity of our community is heartwarming, and the understanding that fundraising is in fact a necessary component of what makes our school a remarkable place shows the commitment, belief, and love we all have for the school. As illustrated in this Impact Report, over half of the funds raised in a year go to securing the future of our school in the form of endowment contribution, provision for plant replacement and renewal (PPRRSM), and operating expenses. The other half of funds raised go directly to our faculty and students in the form of professional development, classroom enhancements, class funds, and health and wellness projects. I cannot thank our community enough for recognizing and responding to these needs and propelling us from good to great, from great to extraordinary. Your contributions, whether on the Day of Giving or at the Spartan Bash, are significant, positive, and impactful. Thank you for your continued support.
With gratitude,
Chris Ashbrook Director of Advancement
Dear Spartans,
I am so excited to begin my time as Collegiate’s Director of Development, standing on the shoulders of some incredible friends whose love for our school has been inspiring. We have so much to look forward to this year, and I hope we’ll see you all on campus or at one of our Homecoming events or the Spartan Bash.
This community thrives on volunteerism, and there are endless opportunities for alumni, parents, alumni parents, grandparents and friends of WCS to get involved. If you've been hoping to find a way to get involved, let me know and we can brainstorm something that would be meaningful to you!

Dear Collegiate Families,
COLLEGIATE PARENT ASSOCIATION in 2022-2023
YEAR REVIEW
It is hard to believe that another school year has come to an end. Not only was the 2022-2023 school year a wonderful time to be a Spartan, but it was also a great time to be a Spartan parent! The Collegiate Parent Association (CPA) had an extremely successful year of growth. Most importantly, we continued to create a welcoming and inclusive community for all Collegiate parents!
Through the efforts and hard work of so many parents, we were able to raise over $121,000 for the school this year. From Activity Passes, Activity Book, Poinsettia/Wreath Holiday Market, Valentine’s Day Surprise, Garden Market, Shirt Shack, and Concessions, it was a very busy year. Countless parents made those events a success either by sitting on a committee to plan them, volunteering, or supporting the event. A special thanks to Jamie Blanchaert, Shannon Dudley, Ilex Gelpi, Bethany Phelps, Kara Scott, Sara Streich, and Ashton Tidemann for being Committee Chairs.
It wasn’t all work this year as we also had a lot of fun! A big thanks to Kelsey Baker, Spartan Social Chair, and her committee for planning awesome events throughout the year. There was a parents’ night out at DOMA, a fun morning of pickleball at Chicken and Pickle, and a family friendly afternoon at The Alley. Each event was a wonderful opportunity to get together and enjoy time with new and old Collegiate families and friends!
CPA also made it a point this year to make sure that the WCS Faculty/Staff know how appreciated they are! Many thanks to Kristen Corrigan, Erin Moeller, Sarah Phillips, Hind Wakil, and Darrylyn Webb for leading those efforts and spreading joy all year long!
A successful parent association takes the efforts of so many and CPA is beyond grateful for every parent that contributed to our success this year! But I would be remiss without personally recognizing the CPA Officers that worked long and hard throughout the year – Ilex Gelpi (Vice President), Gaylene Alderson (Vice-President Elect), Amanda Linnell (Secretary), Sara Streich (Treasurer), Jamie Blanchaert (Past President), and Bethany Phelps (CPA Liaison). These smart, hardworking, and generous parents are the backbone of the CPA.
Next year is shaping up to be another great year and if you haven’t already, I hope that you will join CPA for a meeting or event! All parents are always welcome as SPARTANS THRIVE TOGETHER!

2022-2023 BUDGET 2022-2023 GIFT REPORT
The Spartan Bash 2023 was the WCS fundraising event of the year! Hosted at Murfin Stables, the night featured a beautiful environment in which to socialize with fellow Collegiate families and supporters, enjoy a delicious meal and specialty drinks, participate in unique auction opportunities, and dance the night away. Through the leadership of co-chairs Aly & Alex Bollinger and Ilex & Michael Gelpi, the Spartan Bash has become a highlight of the year for many, and set the precedent for what can be done when we come together as a community.
Thanks to fundraising efforts like the recordbreaking 2023 Spartan Bash, Day of Giving, and the ongoing and generous philanthropy of the Collegiate community, we are able to constantly improve our school and the educational experience for all of our students. This includes things like teacher wishlists and classroom enhancements, facility upgrades, new and unique student experiences, cutting-edge technology, security upgrades, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of Wichita Collegiate School for generations to come.
for Innovation Initiatives on Campus
One standout example of impactful philanthropy in 2022-23 was a generous gift from Carrie Jablonski ‘94 and Doug Cleveland that was designated to help support the innovation initiatives of the school. In particular, the gift was aimed at stimulating the development of collaborative, project-based, and hands-on learning opportunities for lower and middle school students.
This gift was inspired by the joy students experience—and the growth-mindset they develop—when given the autonomy to collaborate with their peers to tackle hard problems and to achieve mastery (of course, after struggle and failure along the way) across a variety of cross-disciplinary functions.
The funds enabled us to create a new "Makerspace"/innovation Lab within the lower school building and purchase curricula and equipment in the areas of VEX robotics, coding, and STEM building to encourage learner-led innovation and problemsolving. Funds from this gift also enabled us to provide faculty professional development in the area of extended-period teaching to all of our 5-12 teachers.
Doug and Carrie share, “Perhaps Mitchel Resnick says it best in 'LifeLong Kindergarten' with the 4 P’s: creativity blossoms when we support students’ work on projects based on their passions in collaboration with peers and in a spirit of play. Our experience has been that team-based problem-solving—especially where students are given autonomy to set and work collaboratively to achieve goals, as well as ownership over the end product—is central to fostering a true love of learning, and also part-and-parcel of the future of education.
We believe that innovation is an important and equal third ‘pillar’ to athletics and the arts for the full go-forward student experience and also to help WCS stay competitive and cutting-edge in the future.”
Collegiate strives to inspire additional momentum in the areas of rigorous, collaborative learning, as well as the igniting of new passions to enable our students to change the world for the better, together.
37
We are excited to help support momentum around innovation at WCS, building upon their strong traditions and values.

After years of requests, we moved our alumni golf tournament to Homecoming Weekend. We had a record number of players in the tournament. We had eighty four golfers on a beautiful September morning at Crestview Country club. After the tournament the alumni tent was a hit. We had over two hundred and fifty alumni, family members, and faculty and staff. The national anthem was a very special moment for many alumni. Mr James Ockerman came back to direct the alumni and current students. The classes of 1967-1972 had a combined reunion to celebrate milestone years. Ken Fast from the inaugural class of 1967 said, “Looking back on the growth and development of WCS, we also felt the first 6 classes of the school, which intermingled in the Upper School daily, were a cohesive part of the pioneering spirit and growth of this fledgling institution. What fun it is to gather the first 6 classes as part of that reunion.”
Day of Giving
Our annual Day of Giving took place on October 6, 2022, and we raised $308,124 surpassing our goal. Sixty-two alumni gave in the event.
Spartan Bash
Alumni from across the country participated in our Spartan Bash. Some alumni gave by contributing auction items, bidding on auction items, attending the Bash, and volunteering on various committees. The party netted over $ 700,000 for Collegiate.
Mentor Day
The Alumni Association hosted an incredible Mentor Day and brought in two honored alumni to speak. Elizabeth Koch ‘94, founder of Unlikely Collaborators, Catapult, and the Tiny Blue Dot Foundation was our breakfast speaker. She talked about embracing failures and questioning the stories we tell ourselves. Brandon Somerhalder ‘10 Academy Award winning cinematographer spoke to our entire Upper School. Brandon spoke about living a life where your life brings happiness to others.
Randy Storms Alumni Award
This year, we presented the Randy Storms Alumni Service award to Katie (Hill) Leiding '04 for her many years of service to Collegiate. Katie Leiding serves as a shining example of a stellar Collegiate alumni. Katie served on the alumni board for 7 years including 1 year as president and 2 years as the Mentor Day Chair. Katie also helped launch our annual Spartan Bash. She and Phoebe (Stokley) Hart ‘95 created the blueprint as the first Auction Co-Chairs.
Graduation
At graduation, the alumni association gave a check to Mr. Washer representing all the donations from alumni during the past year. The check totaled $304,511.65.
Carol Wilson Memorial Mural
This year, our alumni also celebrated the dedication of the Carol Wilson Memorial Mural in the James Ockerman Amphitheatre. The mural was generously organized by Morgan '96 and Logan '96 Overman. The mural was created by alumna sisters Ellie '12 and Maggie Newlin '12.
Thank you to the Wichita Collegiate Community. I will be stepping into the past president role after a two year term. The generosity of our community made everyone of these events listed extremely successful. Thankful to be a Spartan!
Sincerely,
Mallory Farha ‘01 Alumni Board President
Randy Storm Alumni Service Award
Katie Hill Leiding '04
Katie (Hill) Leiding was an easy choice for the Randy Storms Alumni Service Award. Katie helps to set the standard for an exemplary Collegiate Alumna. To know Katie is to love her, and Katie’s love for Collegiate and her community shines through in many ways.
The Randy Storms Alumni Service Award is given annually to the graduate of Wichita Collegiate School who emerges as the individual with the strongest commitment of service to the school. This individual distinguishes him or herself through effort and responsibilities exceeding the normal course of duty. Fostered by a deep love and thoughtful vision for their Alma Mater, these recipients all share in the true spirit of the school motto- Proba Te Dignum (Prove Yourself Worthy).
In many ways, Katie was raised at Collegiate. She was a “lifer” and attended classes at Collegiate from two years old until graduation. Katie’s family helped shape Collegiate into what it is today. Katie’s mother, Bunny Hill, spent 42 years as a teacher, administrator, mentor, and friend until her retirement in 2014. Bunny was a visionary leader for Collegiate and is responsible for much of the culture of excellence our students benefit from today. Katie’s father, Patrick Hill, was a beloved volunteer, and was passionate about Spartan Athletics. He created many of the traditions we hold dear, including the words to our Fight Song. After his passing, his friends and family donated the “Leonidas” Spartan Statue in his memory, which looks over the entrance to our Football Stadium. Patrick and Bunny’s kids, Hamilton, Harrison, and Katie each made their own marks on our school as active students, and now, alumni.
Katie and her husband, Tony, are parents to two precious Spartans, Lincoln, 8, and Jameson, 4. They are dedicated parents, and you can see them at school events cheering on their kids and their classmates.
Professionally, Katie’s career has centered on making a difference in our community. She was a successful fundraiser before joining the Amelia Sumerell Team as a Residential Realtor where she shared her love for Wichita with newcomers and longtime Wichitans alike. Katie also uses her fundraising skills as a volunteer for many local nonprofits. Katie's relationship with Wichita Collegiate School has had many faces over the years, which makes us even more excited to formally announce that Katie will be bringing her fundraising prowess, community connections, and genuine love for Collegiate to the school as our new Director of Development.
Katie has been very active in the WCS Alumni community. She served on the Alumni Board for seven years, including one year as President, and two years as the Mentor Day Chair. Katie has served on many WCS fundraising endeavors over the years, including as the Alumni Chair for the Annual Fund.
Most impactfully, Katie helped launch our Annual Spartan Bash. She and Phoebe (Stokley) Hart ’95 created the blueprint as the first Auction Co-Chairs. Their vision for a robust virtual auction engaged both alumni and current families, ensuring that everyone who loves Collegiate has an opportunity to bid to make a difference. The Spartan Bash raised nearly $1.5 million in its first three years, with Katie Co-Chairing the Auction two of those years. These funds allow the school to build its endowment, save for the future, and meet the current needs of the school. Quite literally, Katie has helped Collegiate to forge a path forward.
While these accomplishments help to paint a picture of Katie, in our minds, Katie is so much more. She is dynamic. She is mindful of the past but looks to the future. Katie helps Collegiate to continue building while simultaneously reinforcing its foundation. Katie is a bridge builder.
Following in her family's footsteps, Katie inspires, believes in, and encourages the entire Collegiate community. It is our hope that someday, just like Katie, each of our graduates will become the best version of themselves and give back to lead lives of impact.
Mentor Day 2023
by Sarah Myers
More than 30 years ago, Paul Attwater '79 was attending a Senior Picnic in Dr. Kupersmith’s backyard when he hatched an idea. Perhaps each Upper School Senior could be paired with a professional mentor in the field they wished to study. Paul was inspired by his own experience in college, where he saw a difference in the academic performance and engagement for students who attended college to prepare for a specific career, such as law, medicine, engineering, or accounting versus students who didn’t have a clear goal after graduation. Paul felt the college degree itself was his goal, so after commencement he didn't feel prepared for life after college. While sitting in Dr. Kupersmith’s backyard, he wondered how many other kids felt like he did after graduation. Matching seniors to mentors seemed like the natural answer. And so, Mentor Day was born.
Mentor Day has now become a tradition that seniors, alumni, and staff look forward to each year. The tradition has now evolved into a two day event that engages the entire Upper School and many community mentors who generously give their time and talents to teaching and fostering our rising generation. This year, we were honored to hear from two esteemed alumni: Elizabeth Koch ‘94, founder of Unlikely Collaborators, the Tiny Blue Dot Foundation, and Catapult, and Brandon Somerhalder ‘10, Academy Award winning cinematographer. We are also honored and grateful for the many community members who were willing to mentor each of the members of the Senior class.
When Brandon Somerhalder ‘10 spoke to our Upper School, Director of Advancement, Chris Ashbrook, introduced Brandon by describing him in high school. “He was exceptional. He was talented, smart, responsible, a tremendous amount of fun, and maybe most exceptional of all, he was somebody who was a friend to everyone…. What made Brandon truly exceptional was the positive impact he had on the people around him. Brandon listened to others, he cared about others, he put people at ease, made them feel welcome, made them feel like their opinion was important and relevant. He made everyone around him feel special and people gravitated towards him.”
After such an incredible introduction, Brandon shared one of his short films called a “Concerto is a Conversation.” Brandon used the short film to segue into his own story. He reflected on his journey and the many times that he felt unsure

Brandon Somerhalder '10 speaks to upper school students in the Galichia Family Auditorium.
if he was on the “right” path. Despite his success, Brandon was humble and talked about his mentors. He said, his “mentors are people who choose to go beyond their own story to invest in mine.” He talked about several of his Collegiate mentors including Amy Cunningham, Chris Ashbrook, Sam Hake, and Troy Fischer. For Brandon’s final advice, “Live a life where your happiness comes from bringing other people happiness.”
After his speech, amidst all the hugs and reunions, something magical happened. The drumline appeared and Brandon slipped back into his old drumline ensemble from his Upper School days. He pounded the drums in syncopation with the drumline as if no time had passed. Once a Spartan, always a Spartan!
The next day, all of the Seniors and their Mentors came together at Wichita Country Club and started off the morning with “Ice Breakers from Hell,” which included questions such as, “What do you want people to believe about you.” And “In what aspects of your life do you feel not good enough? What is the first time you remember feeling that way?” These questions sparked a lot of interesting conversations and discussions. For many of the seniors, this was their first time meeting their mentors in person and they immediately dove into some profound questions meant to invoke authentic and vulnerable conversations.
After breakfast, Elizabeth Koch ‘94 took the spotlight and began captivating the audience. She shared about her academic and writing career. She was open about her successes and failures and was not afraid to be edgy. She talked about the “Perception Box” that we all have which is built from the material of your beliefs and has the power to distort your reality and leave you feeling isolated, disconnected, and fearful. She spoke of her company, “Unlikely Collaborators” and their work to help people untangle the stories holding them back through Experiences, Storytelling, Impact, and Investments. Her message seemed to resonate across the room: It’s okay to fail. It's okay to not have all the answers. It's okay to question.
After breakfast, most of the seniors went to their mentor’s workplace to shadow them for several hours. The Seniors had great feedback about their experiences. Katherine Grace was paired with Judge Tyler Roush ‘96. She said, “I loved getting to see everything about his job and listening to his helpful pointers! It was a great experience and he was very insightful, helpful, and interesting.” Dakota Dart was paired with Wichita Police Department Detective Dustin Meier because of his interest in detective work and forensic science. He said, “It was amazing. By far one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever had.”
The experiences at Mentor Day help to showcase the magic in the Collegiate experience. Each student is seen individually , and their interests are cultivated. Collegiate is able to access a community of caring adult mentors who are generous enough to pour their time, attention, and resources into furthering our students. Thank you, Paul Attwater, for starting this incredible Collegiate tradition. May it continue always onward.
Lt. Col. Andy Bowers served as senior Quentin Fair's mentor.

During this school year, we had 123 legacy students who have at least one parent who is an alumni of WCS.
To commemorate both the heritage and future of the school, we gathered as many of these students as we could in the Ockerman Amphitheatre for pictures. Many of the student's donned their parent's vintage Collegiate gear including letterman jackets, helmets, and championship sports gear. We love how many of our alumni choose to educate their children at WCS.
Katie
KD has been playing in the Shocker Sound, and was awarded a scholarship for her excellent grades in her first semester of classes. Because of her stellar grades and work ethic from first semester, KD was invited to join the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS). She joined just at the beginning of February 2023, and is now a member of a prestigious national honor society!
