Dear Collegiate Community When I arrived at Collegiate, I was struck by the welcoming and generous spirit of our community. The genuine love felt for the school by faculty, parents, students, and alumni was palpable and visible in so many ways. A high bar was set, and yet in 2021-22 this community has surpassed all expectations and set a new standard for Collegiate with an incredibly impactful year.

As I look ahead, I am confident that our students will continue to thrive at their school and go on to make a lasting, positive contribution to our world. One needs only to read the news of our alumni featured in Class Notes to be reminded that preparing our students to make a difference in the future is a tradition we proudly carry forward from our past.

HeadNathanGratefully,WasherofSchool

Thank you to each and every one of you for your invaluable support, which enables our school to deliver on its promise to develop students who will go on to lead lives of impact in their communities. You will learn of the galvanizing experiences our students benefit from in Beyond the Classroom, and you will read about the emphasis we place on public speaking in our younger grades. We have also highlighted the insight gained by our older students from working with their mentors on Mentor Day.

FROM THE HEAD SCHOOLOF

The above are just snapshots of the types of rewarding work being undertaken at Collegiate.

3

The following pages will highlight so many of the different ways our students, faculty, parents, grandparents, alumni and donors have contributed to the success of our school.

I am proud to be leading a school where classroom discussions encourage respectful exchanges on relevant topics and where learning takes place both within and beyond the traditional classroom walls. Teachers are also regularly integrating real world scenarios into their curricula to help our students realize the potential they have to be effective collaborators, independent thinkers, and skilled communicators.

I am energized by the thoughtful and varied approaches taken as we prepare our students to live in a complex world demanding teamwork and creative problem-solving skills.

As I finish my second year as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, I would characterize this past year as ex ceptional, with great enthusiasm from the Collegiate community.

Suzie Ahlstrand has served on the Board for the past seven years. During her time, she shared her talents and institutional knowledge by serving on the Advancement Committee. Suzie is moth er to Alums Kerstin ’87, Christina ’88, and Eric ’90. We thank her for her continued support and dedication to our school.

Š

The Finance Committee, chaired by Sheryl Nolan, has worked with Mr. Washer and his team to up date and develop comprehensive financial policies, approve a sound annual budget, and many other finance and facilities related initiatives. And very notably, we have put in place measures to protect, strengthen, and grow our school’s endowment.

Š At the beginning of the school year last August, the Board launched a 5-year 2021-2026 Strategic Plan.

Š

The detailed strategic plan which can be found on our website, serves as a roadmap to administration as they proceed with implementation. The Strate gic Plan Committee, chaired by Christina Shuart, is tasked to provide guidance and oversight.

Š

FROM THE BOARD 4

The Head Support and Evaluation Committee is tasked with guidance and support to the head of school and is chaired by Meredith Olson. A tremen dous amount of work goes into the evaluation pro cess, goals development, and general support. Collectively, we have rekin dled important relationships from the past and started new relationships with many new families, while maintaining a healthy and happy campus life for our students and families. That is not to say our work is done, but merely to say we are most definitely on the right track to build upon the suc cess and the momentum and take the school to the next level. As we look ahead to the upcoming year, I wanted to take a moment to thank our outgoing Board mem bers for their years of service.

Our work on the board aspires that the school remains true to its culture of academic excellence and school character.

Š Raul Brito ’76 just completed his ninth year on the Board also serving on the Advancement Committee. Previous to joining the Board, Raul was a member of the Alumni Board from 20052012 and parent to Christopher Brito ’08 and Mallory Brito. We are certainly grateful for Raul’s nearly two decades of service to our school.

Š

The plan was a culmination of more than a year’s worth of work and collaboration between a talent ed and strategic group of individuals that included trustees, administration, and teachers and staff.

The Trusteeship Committee, chaired by Angela Fox, has worked diligently to keep the Board engaged and educated on Board policies as well as ensure we have appropriate skills and talent in future trustees.

The Advancement Committee, chaired by Corey Johnson, had a great year as evident by the amazing success at the Spartan Bash and other events put together by innovative trustees, staff, event chairs, and volunteers.

I am proud to be associated with our very talented, active, and thoughtful Board as we work together to strategize and uphold the long-term financial, strate gic, and cultural sustainability of the school. While we entrust Mr. Washer and his team with the day-to-day operations of the school, our work on the Board as pires that the school remains true to its culture of ac ademic excellence and school character. Our Board’s committees have worked hard throughout the year:

Š We also say farewell to Sharol Rasberry, who just completed her second term on the Board for a to tal of twenty years of service. During that time, she has served on the Trusteeship Committee, Finance and Facilities Committee, and Head of School Search Committee as well as serving as Vice Chair from 2018 to 2022. She is the parent of Kim Reynolds and Bobby Rasberry ’94 as well as the grandparent of alumni Hunter Glass ’17 and Tara Glass ’21 and current students Robby Ras berry ’24 and Reide Rasberry ’27. We are deeply appreciative of Sharol’s long term commitment and service to Collegiate.

Š

We are thrilled to welcome three new members to the Board of Trustees for the upcoming year.

Š Sara Streich has been a part of the Collegiate community since 2014 when her family moved to Wichita and her oldest son started in Great Beginnings. Sara graduated from Wash ington and Lee University and then received her MBA from Duke University. After spending many years in New York City both as an investment banker at Merrill Lynch and in business development at a law firm, she and her husband Tony moved to Kansas. They have three boys: Jack (rising 4th grader), Ben (rising 2nd grader), and Sam (rising Kindergar tener). Sara has been active in the Collegiate community as a frequent volunteer and most recently as Treasurer of the Collegiate Parent Association. She is also involved with the Wichita Children’s Home, Cub Scouts, and her sorority alumnae group.

Kate Taylor Deanna Ternes Bill Voloch

Jared Sprole

Jared Sprole has also finished his nine-year term on the Board. We benefited from his expertise as he served on both the Development Committee and Fi nance and Facilities Committee, serving as Chair of the Finance and Facilities Committee from 2014 to 2019. Parent of Aiden ’22, Tristan ’25, Blake ’28, and Emerson ’31, we thank him for his service and look forward to his continued presence around campus.

The Collegiate community is grateful to the retiring Trustees for their dedica tion and care through their gifts of time, talent, and treasure.

Š Dr. Fadi Joudi is the father of rising 5th grader Jude, ris ing 3rd grader Mark, and Luke, who will start in our Early Childhood program this fall. Having grown up in Lebanon, Fadi earned his medical doctorate from the American Uni versity of Beirut. He first started practice at the University of Iowa, where he met his wife Dr. Lana Hattar. Dr. Joudi has served as secretary and treasurer of the Medical Soci ety of Sedgwick County, as a member of the Board of Kansas Medical Society, and as president of the Kansas Urological Society from 2018 to 2021.

As we enjoy the final days of summer, I hope you all have enjoyed a refreshing summer vacation. We look forward to another exceptional year, and thank you for entrusting us with the education of your children.

He received a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and went on to earn a Master’s degree in Human Computer Interaction with a Computer Science concentration from The Georgia Institute of Technology. He and his wife Minni are the proud parents of rising 8th grader Avik and rising 5th grader Anaya. Navin has been an active participant in Wichita Start-Up Week, represents Koch Industries at the Wichita State University Smart Factory, and is involved with several community boards, including QC Ware, ForAllSecure, Dragos, and Automox.

BEYOND

Spartans Speaking by Charlie Ramseyer

Wichita Collegiate strives for excellence in everything we do. Oftentimes, those efforts are publicly seen and celebrated. Just this past year, we celebrated multiple team and individual state championships on six of our athletic teams. We also took the title in multiple academic competitions, including Scholars Bowl and Debate. As a community, we cheered on every senior as they announced their college decisions, and we will continue to cheer them on as they start the next chapter of their educational journeys. From performances on a large stage to class presentations at the front of the room, our students give it their all. Though we are proud of all of the accolades we have gathered publicly, what we appreciate most is what people have to say about our students when they meet them at a conference, an interview, a volunteer site, or simply in one of our hallways during a visit to campus. These are the occasions when our students truly shine. In day-to-day conversations and presentations, whether addressing a small class or a large auditorium, they are poised and confident.

with Confidence

Learning to Present

What many do not realize is that these confident speaking skills our students possess are not developed by chance, but instead the result of intentional opportunities given to our students to speak in front of their peers continuously throughout their time at Collegiate. Not only do these opportunities hone their communication skills, they present the added bonus of building their self-confidence. While many public speaking opportunities are given as elective options in the upper grade levels, our Early Childhood and Lower School curriculums focus on using small group speaking opportunities to lay the groundwork and help to prepare them for what is to come.

Beginning in Early Childhood students have the chance to stand in front of their peers and present. Preschoolers are introduced to public speaking by way of brief show and tell opportunities and class jobs, such as weather person, calendar presenter, or class greeter. In pre-kindergarten, students present to classmates their own family cultures and traditions, a practice which encourages both identity development and self-confidence. Kindergarten students dive into research and create dioramas of animal habitats. These students’ multimedia presentations on animals from around the world showcases just how far their journeys take them during their years in Early Childhood.

Moreover, exposing kids to these chances at such a young age not only helps develop their verbal skills, but plants the seeds of confidence in their ability to speak in front of both peers and adults alike.

Second graders present Salute to America.

Fourth graders take a bow during their musical.

All of these experiences and moments contribute in their own way to each student’s future self expression. Whether an actor on stage, a house captain addressing their class, or a senior defending their Good Life paper, when tasked with the chance, our students confidently take the floor. Our Early Childhood and Lower School teachers often beam with pride as they watch their students move onto the Middle and Upper Schools and effortlessly step into roles that demonstrate their comfort with public speaking. And in those moments, it is lovely to remember the sweet 2nd graders at Salute to America reciting their memorized monologues about each state or the 3rd graders coming to life in the Wax Museum. Being capable communicators and confident public speakers will serve our students long after their time in our hallways is over. However, the foundations of those skills will forever be rooted in the gentle, but intentional, teachings of their beloved Early Childhood and Lower School teachers.

In our Lower School, the students find themselves stepping onto a larger stage–quite literally. From the first grade mini-musical to the full blown musical in the fourth grade, our students find themselves tasked with a public performance each year. Though small in scale compared to other performances on campus, the 1st Grade Mini-Musical looms large in children’s memories. As students learn their lines and memorize their songs, they learn what it takes to perform as a team. They take those skills into second grade during their preparation for Salute to America, during which each student presents a speech they research and write on a particular state. The 3rd Grade Wax Museum is another opportunity for students to present on a public stage as they adopt the personas of an historical hero they researched. And of course, perhaps the most memorable performance of Lower School is the 4th Grade Musical, during which students in full costume and make-up delight audiences with their perfectly choreographed musical numbers. These large scale performances are only one piece of the puzzle, though. Lower School teachers help build on the groundwork laid by our Early Childhood teachers and continue to ask students to present to their classes through assignments such as book report presentations, market fair sales, and more. These learning experiences aren’t all limited to speaking opportunities. As part of the music curriculum, every student in the Lower School presents a “Musical Moment” to their classmates. This assignment encourages students to present in the way in which they are most comfortable, whether that maybe speaking about music’s impact on them, singing a solo, performing a dance routine, or playing an instrument. Through all of these small moments, our teachers are giving their students the chance not only to build confidence and public speaking skills, but also to process their inevitable nerves in a safe and encouraging environment.

38 2021-2022ANNUALREPORT

The hours, expertise, and financial support shared with the school by our families show unwavering trust and appreciation for the school and help us provide a truly transformative education.

Throughout this year of transition and learning, two things have been clear to me more than anything else. One, the hard working, thoughtful, and ready-to-give-their-best students I’ve admired and been fortunate enough to work with for the last 13 years, do in fact learn and emulate these traits from their parents. The parents of WCS amazed me throughout the year with their support of the school! In development, they speak of “time, talent, and treasure” and the families of WCS give all three.

Looking back on the 2022-23 school year, I’m happy to say it was a very enjoyable and productive year in the Advancement Office. It was a sat isfying year, as I was able to work with talented and committed faculty, parents, grandparents, and volunteers who care deeply for the school. It was a very informative year where I learned about a facet of the school I had never fully appreciated. It was a very exciting year with a team of incredibly talented colleagues who helped the school raise significant funds as well as our enrollment numbers. It was a successful year, like many before it, that was guided by exceptional people for whom I have a renewed sense of respect and gratitude. It was a year of discovery, as I looked at the school I love through a different lens and worked to propel us forward in our ability to deliver the school’s mission and vision.

Wichita Collegiate School is accredited by the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS) and is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools. Wichita Collegiate School affords students of any race, color, nationality, and ethnicity all the rights, privileges, pro grams, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, nationality, or ethnicity in administration of its educational policies, admission policies, financial assistance, or athletic or other school-administered programs.

Second, the funds raised by the school are critical for its continued suc cess. While tuition covers the cost of the school’s most precious resources – our teachers – the funds raised through the Annual Fund (kicked off on the Day of Giving) and the Spartan Bash help the school solidify our operation’s needs, but most importantly, enable our teachers and admin istration to reach beyond the immediate to offer our children the best education we can imagine. These funds provide our students with the extraordinary – the tools, spaces, and experiences that inspire them to be the best versions of themselves. These funds have a lasting impact on our students and guide them to, in turn, lead lives of impact. In my previous role as Head of Upper School, I was surrounded by the results of fundraising efforts but never fully appreciated the process of securing Ourthem.school is EXCEPTIONAL, one-of-a-kind in my humble opinion, because of the commitment and support from all of our constituents. The time, talent, and treasure that our families choose to share with the school are invaluable to us, and I look forward to sharing new opportunities for these generous acts of kindness, showing appreciation for the im pact they have, acknowledging the selflessness of those who give, and cel ebrating the successes of our school with all the good people we proudly and affectionately call Spartans. With gratitude, Chris DirectorAshbrookofAdvancement

Collegiate Parent Association 2021-22 IN REVIEW 39

The Collegiate Parent Association (CPA) has had an exciting inaugural year. Last Spring, we set to work restructuring our parent organizations. Instead of multi ple parent clubs or groups, we wanted to create one, all-encompassing parent or ganization because as we have learned, Spartans Thrive Together. We are proud of what we accomplished this year thanks to the countless num ber of parent volunteers. The culmina tion of our efforts resulted in CPA raising $111,000, which will be used to fund a myriad of needs across cam pus, including “teacher need” items, teacher appreciation events and gifts, parent and family socials, team and club allotments, and much more, all of which might not have otherwise been funded. More importantly, CPA has created a sense of community that benefits the entire Spartan family. Every single WCS parent is a member of CPA, so we encourage you to get involved, if you haven’t already had the chance to do so. CPA holds monthly meetings, hosts several Spartan Socials throughout the year, assists the athletic department with concessions, runs the Shirt Shack, and so much more. From a one-hour volunteer shift to a more involved committee chair role, there is a way for every single parent to contribute. For more information, please reach out anytime to the CPA Officers at cpa@wcsks.com. We wish that we could personally recognize every single parent that contributed to CPA this year. Please know that everyone's efforts are noticed and appreciated. A few of the many parents that we wanted to formally recognize and thank for giving of their time and talents include: Activities Book Chair Jamee Ross, Concessions Chair Sherry Anderson, Garden Market Chair Shannon Dudley, Parents Supporting Science Chair Janice McClelland, Patrons of the Arts Chair Kerry Prater, Poinsettia and Holiday Market Chair Ash ton Tidemann, Shirt Shack Bethany Phelps, Spartan Club Chair Mike Ross, Spartan Social Chair Abby Hou rani, Teacher Appreciation Chairs Minni Maharaj, Erin Moeller, and Sarah Phillips, Teacher Appreciation Lunch Chair Hind Wakil, and Volunteer Coordinator Amanda Linnell. With many thanks to all WCS parents, we look forward to another great year for CPA next year.

Farha ‘01 Alumni Board President

Dear Collegiate, 2021-2022 was an exciting year for WCS, and one of the most exciting aspects was the INCREDIBLE support from our Alumni Association!

President Mallory Jones Farha ’01 President Elect Regis Fox ’04 Past President Doug Coe ’04 Board Members Casey Allen ’05 Trey Anderson ’05 Niki Bakri ’08 Katie Gunzelman ’07 Adam Kennedy ’00 Amy Johnson ’07 Katie Hill Leiding ’04 Kaylea Knappenberger ’14 Matt Maloney ’94 Mariah Moxley ’10 Alexis Phillips ’01 Rob Ramseyer ’02 Jeff Walenta ’98 Van Winter ’05 Faculty Representatives Amy Cunningham Out-of-State Members Amar Shah ’02 Blaine Schultz ’89 Honorary Members Randy Love ’67 Randy Storms ’74 Assistant Director of Development Lalo Walsh Director of Advancement Chris Ashbrook Head of School Nathan Washer

At the start of the year, we were thankful to be able to once again experience traditional WCS events in person, cherishing time with friends old and new. Our Alumni Golf Tournament, Spartan Homecoming football game victory, and reunions were all huge hits. We introduced two new events over Homecoming weekend – Spartans on Chester’s Patio and the Alumni Pickleball Tournament. Watch for all of these events again at our upcoming Homecoming, the weekend of September 23rd. It's wonderful to hear the hilarious stories and anecdotes that are recalled over Homecoming weekend as Collegiate grads reconnect with their childhood friends and to see these alumni have the opportunity to make new memories together.

At graduation, I was honored to present the Randy Storms Alumni Service Award to Laura (Dakhil) Monahan ’00 for her years of dedicated volunteer work on behalf of WCS and her incredible leadership as one of this year’s Spartan Bash Co-Chairs. I was also proud to share the total alumni giving for 2021-2022 with the graduating class: $205,649.59! What an exciting way to welcome four new members into our Alumni Association. I’m grateful to our alumni for continuing to support Collegiate. Thank you for remembering how special Collegiate is and for giving your time, talent, and trea sure so that it can continue to improve year after year. Our faculty, staff, and students are so grateful for all that youMallorydo!

FROMALUMNITHEBOARD

For over thirty years, our Alumni Association has presented Mentor Day, and this year, we brought in two incredible alumni to speak. Tracy Gardner ’00, Head of Label Licensing & Partnerships at Bytedance/TikTok wowed our students and mentors at the Mentor Breakfast with her remarks on how very well Collegiate prepared her for the demanding yet fulfilling academic and professional life that followed her graduation. Sophie Beren ‘13 captivated the Upper School Stu dent Body with her inspiring words on staying true to oneself while remaining open to new people and ideas.

Giving opportunities have been streamlined recently, with Collegiate now host ing two major fundraising events per year. The first, our Annual Day of Giving, took place on October 14, 2021, and nearly 200 alumni generously donated alongside parents, grandparents, Collegiate faculty and staff, and other friends of the school. Our second major fundraising event is our Spartan Bash, and we held it in person for the first time this past April. Alumni across the country participated in our virtual silent auction, and more than 400 guests gathered at the Murfin Stables, with everyone's generous contributions netting $509,237 for WCS. This level of participation exceeded hopes and expectations and helped make this past year of fundraising one of Collegiate's best! I am especially excit ed to report that more than 45 of our auction packages at the Spartan Bash were given by alumni! From vacation homes to unique experiences, to goods and services, your auction donations were invaluable to the Bash's success, and we are so grateful for your support! Save the date for next year’s Bash on April 22, 2023 , and let us know if you would like to be involved.

We kicked off the year dedicating the “Leonidas” Spartan Statue in memory of Patrick Hill, our #1 Super Fan for 47 years. We gathered with the Hill Family to reflect on Patrick’s vision for Spartan Athletics and all he did to help us achieve the student-athlete experience we enjoy today.

As Laura accepted her award she spoke of the significant role Colle giate has played in not only her life but also her parents’ and chil drens’ lives: “I became a Spartan in 1988 … When we came to the school, we were seeking (an) academic challenge … In addition to finding what we were looking for, we found a sense of belonging. We found a community of lifelong relationships and support … We suddenly had family, friends, and a community of people with shared commit ment to hard work, excellence, and drive to become the best version of themselves … Spartans became my friends, colleagues, clients, neighbors, mentors, fellow par ents, and supporters in my life, and maybe most importantly, caretakers, coaches, teachers, and other parents with great influence on my four children’s lives.”

LAURA DAKHIL MONAHAN ’00

This award is given annually to the Wichita Collegiate alumnus/a who has demonstrated a strong commitment of service to the school. Recipients have historically distinguished themselves through ex traordinary efforts and accomplishments on behalf of WCS, demon strating, through vision and deed, a deep love for their alma mater.

Alumni Service Award

55

This understanding of our school as a supportive community of families that mo tivates Laura Monahan to give back is perhaps responsible for the outsize impact of her efforts. From coaching intramural volleyball and basketball over the years to being an ever-ready and loyal volunteer to leading the Bash that ultimately raised over $600,000 for our school this past year, her dedication to all things Spartan, which so obviously comes from the heart, is a guiding light and inspiration to us all.

Laura Monahan sparkles. Her eyes bright with ideas and a zest for life, she has a blazing energy that electrifies everything she does. She is organized, savvy, and exacting; to have her on your team means that whatever you are working on will not just be better for it, it will be the best it can possibly be. In this way, Laura embodies the Spartan ideal, and given her contributions this particular year, she was a candidate to whom our WCS Alumni Board could enthusiastically award the Randy Storms Alumni Service Award.

On May 22, 2022, preceding the graduation of our Collegiate Class of 2022, Mallory Farha ‘01, President of our WCS Alumni Board, proudly bestowed this honor upon Laura, citing her long history of contribution to the school culminating in her remarkable leader ship, alongside her mother Kathie Dakhil, of our most recent Spar tan Bash. Mallory noted, “As the mother of four Spartans, she is well known by our teachers and administrators as someone they can always count on for support,” an attribute corroborated by Head of Lower School Lindsey Noble: “Despite her busy career as the Chief Legal Officer at the Cancer Center of Kansas, she is never too busy to help the school in any capacity.”

The snow came, for once, just as forecast. It had fallen heavily, thickly blanketing our Kansas plains and letting up only to make way for sleet and frozen rain. Dawn broke on Friday, February 18 to reveal tree limbs encased in ice bent over roads fit to skate on. Surveying the frozen Crestview Country Club parking lot from the warm safety of her car, Kelly Kemnitz took a deep breath, exited her car into the frigid air, and slowly began to inch her way across ice towards the club’s entrance. Just as she began to lose her balance, a hand caught her elbow. Steadied, Kelly and fellow Spartan mentor, Jeff Walsh, leaned on each other to safely make it inside. Happily, the scene inside Crestview was drastically different. The ballroom bustled with our Class of 2022 and their mentors, all of whom had braved the inclement driv ing conditions to enjoy the Wichita Collegiate School tradition of Mentor Day. For over 30 years, Collegiate has brought accomplished professionals to speak to our se niors about life after high school, career development, and how mentorships can be life changing. In 2004, we expanded the program to include an additional speaker who addresses the entire WCS Upper School, encouraging our younger high school students to think beyond the immediate and to dream about and plan for their future.

On this particular Mentor Day morning, as breakfast was served and mentors chat ted with the WCS senior with whom they were matched about how their afternoon together would be spent, Tracy Gardner '00, Head of Label Licensing & Partnerships at Bytedance/TikTok, readied her presentation. Despite warnings of the impending storm, she had flown in from Arizona to appear as our keynote speaker, knowing how meaningful this event is for our school. Charged with negotiating complex global li censing agreements while driving business development across Bytedance and com mercial relationships with TikTok’s label partners, Tracy is no stranger to going where others fear to tread; this dauntless work ethic was very much part of her message to our seniors and their mentors. Cred iting her rigorous high school academic schedule for having prepared her to excel at NYU and to endure the grind of a hard hitting legal career in the music industry, Tracy went on to highlight the three most important lessons she took away with her from Collegiate. “First off, never stop learning. Sec ond, the importance of community and collaboration. And third, Amongperseverance.”thesixtymentors listening to Tracy speak that day was Jeff (JJ) Johnson, once a Collegiate student himself, a past mentor many times over, and keynote speaker to Tra cy Gardner’s class of 2000. “I have always loved Mentor Day, hearing about our students’ dreams and aspirations, and see by Lalo Walsh

Sophie Beren '1356 I have always loved Mentor Day, hearing about our students' dreams and aspirations, and seeing them connected with our community. It is yet another way that WCS prepares students to positively contribute to society and become their best selves!”

The program culminates in the senior class shadowships where each senior is paired with and spends a day alongside a professional accomplished in the field in which the student hopes to work.

57 ing them connected with the many successful busi ness people, medical professionals, and philanthro pists in our community. It is yet another way that WCS prepares students to positively contribute to society and become their best selves!” JJ, like many other professionals in attendance, has been a long standing Mentor Day enthusiast, participating in the event consistently over the years. We hope to see this kind of enduring connection develop with our All-Upper School speaker, Sophie Beren ‘13. On the impossibly beautiful and temper ate day that came ahead of the storm, Sophie, just in from New York and herself as sunny as can be, related the trials and tribulations of her own high school years to students and faculty. “The good, the bad, the highs, the lows, the stress, the pressure, the perfectionism, the disappointment, the longing, the need for acceptance and validation above all, and so much more. . .” Never feeling she was the star she so keenly hoped to be while at WCS yet never giving up hope in herself and in others, her uplifting message to our students was clear and welcome: be yourself, be brave, and always keep your mind and heart open to people who are different from you. Founder and CEO of The Conversationalist, a non-partisan edu cational platform empowering Gen Z to break out of their echo chambers, Sophie is now host of her own show, “POVz”, and was an incredibly engaging speaker to whom our students have thronged, both during and after her appearance on campus. In retrospect, our 2022 Mentor Program, like so much of the last school year, demonstrated and celebrated the power of showing up. Showing up in spite of pandemic uncertainties. Showing up to do the hard work that Collegiate prepared you to do. Showing up time and time again to place faith in yourself and others. And showing up in spite of snow, sleet, and ice to walk arm in arm toward stu dents who are mustering to take their own tentative first steps toward bright and bold futures.
