Our parks and facilities have experienced a significant uptick in visitors these past several months and we were ready to keep it rolling into the Fall. People are discovering the hidden gems around the County including our 34 Nature Preserves which provide an amazing respite from our everyday lives. The preserves are a wonderful place to walk, relax, bird watch, read, or just kick back for an afternoon. Located throughout Washtenaw County, there’s a good chance one is within a few miles of your home. Sundays, September 11 - December 11 (no class 10/16 & 11/27 | 9am - 10am | $120 Slow flow yoga class, all levels welcome, no experience necessary. Emphasis is placed on core strength, flexibility, balance, concentration, and breath control. Cannot commit to three months of yoga? Check out our Fall 1 (September 11 - October 23; $75), Fall 2 (October 30 - December 11; $75) yoga registration options. This package includes both Fall 1 and Fall 2 in-person/virtual yoga. In person yoga will be held here in the park. If you would rather do yoga virtually then Zoom with us. The time and day are the same. Independence Lake Park

September 9 | 8:30pm - 11:30pm | $5 per Night or Free for an Annual Bag Tag Holders Come join us for Disc Golf Glow Nights at the park. Starting in April and continuing through September, meeting the second Friday of the month, times varying based on sunset. We will illuminate our disc golf baskets 1-18 for night play. This is the only time each month that you can disc golf in the park after dark. Bring your own glow discs, glow tape, and glow lights for your discs. There is walk up registration. DISC GOLF GLOW NIGHTS

October 7 | 7pm - 8pm & 8:15pm - 9:15pm | $5 per Family/Household, Up to 4 Members Join us for a night-time adventure as we learn about the lives of local owl species and other creatures that go bump in the night! Hike begins at the Beach Center pavilion and finishes near a bonfire with hot cocoa, cider, and doughnuts. Monitor the weather and remember to dress for the outdoors. Although headlamps or flashlights are not required some participants find bringing one helpful. Check in at the Beach Center Pavilion. FALL FIRESIDE STORYTIME October 14 | 6pm - 8pm | $10 per Family/Household, Up to 4 Members Gather at the Beach Center with Parks Naturalist, Elle Bogle, to hear The Gruffalo in addition to other mice stories. Enjoy boxed apple juice and popcorn while listening to the stories. Then take a Gruffalo Hunt nature hike. Follow a brave little mouse on a hike to discover the houses of woodland creatures…can we find an underground house, a log pile house, and a tree top house? Check in at the Beach Center Pavilion. Join us for the 7th Annual Red Hawk Glow Disc Golf Tournament! This is the only after-hours disc golf tournament hosted at Independence Lake County Park this year. Holes #1-18 of the Red Hawk West course will be played. Player pack items are TBD. The top 20% of players for each division will receive awarded payouts in disc golf discs. Register at discgolfscene.com.

FALL

The crisp fall air is perfectly complemented by a crisp, crackling campfire. Join Parks Naturalist, Elle Bogle, for a fall day of campfire cooking. Learn how to properly identify and gather materials and build a cooking fire, then build your own. Take in the beauty of the lake while enjoying a tasty meal you prepared with your new knowledge! Matches, grates, cast iron pans, and tongs will be provided but bring your own food to prepare. All registrants will receive a list of sample menus in advance. Check in at the Beach Center Pavilion.

As beautiful as the woods are during the day, an equal amount of beauty can be found at night. Join naturalist Elle Bogle in exploring the woods and marsh to see just how many different things we can experience when we focus on using our ears and nose instead of our eyes. A photo will be uploaded to Facebook and the dog with the most “likes” will win a prize by Halloween day at 4pm. A trick for a treat trail will be set up for you and your dog along our Indy Woods trail. Plans are in place for campfires and s’more making for dog owners. Dogs must be on a leash at all times. NOT-TOO-SCARY STORYBOOK TRAIL Baker Woods Preserve, 11914 Trinkle Rd., Dexter | Drop-In | Chelsea District Library Wear your Halloween costume and hunt for treats on our StoryBook Trail while enjoying a not-too-scary story. Families can start the trail anytime during our program hours. Volunteers will be on hand with special treats along the trail. This hike will be at a slow to moderate pace through the woods. During the hike, we will stop periodically for quiet reflection and to connect with our senses. HECKUVA HIKE Watkins Lake State Park & County Preserve | State Park Pass Req. 12 Hikers | Naturalist, Kelsey Dehring Take a hike in what feels like the county’s countryside. The rolling terrain provides fantastic views of meadows, woodlands, and the lake known for its incredible diversity of waterfowl. SENIOR NATURALIST: STEWARDSHIP TBD | Ages 55+ | 12 Volunteers | Naturalist, Elle Bogle Mother Nature has given so many gifts to us in so many ways, now it’s time to give back to Her. Spend some quality time removing invasive shrubs using hand saws and loppers while learning about the importance of land management and stewardship.
