Introduction to 120 Welcome to another year and another edition of the Wanderer. “So soon after the last!” - I hear you say. I won’t be making a habit of this timescale, instead my aspiration will be to produce the final edition of this year at the start of the Autumn, not the end.

This is the AGM edition which is the Association’s formal means of notifying you, its members, of the time and place of the Annual General Meeting should you wish to attend.

You’ll find this information, as well as an agenda, the previous meeting minutes and last year’s accounts over the next pages.

In the past the AGM’s agenda has occupied the front page space, but I thought you, dear reader, might like a reminder of how fantastic this hobby can be and just why we bother dragging lumps of glass fibre around.

Hopefully the image of Racing in Salcombe over the page will enthuse you to prepare your boat, grease the wheels on your road base and join in

one of the many events about which you’ll find much of the information needed for you to attend amongst these pages.

The photo on the previous page was by the Membership Secretary, Jenny Renouf. Without Jenny’s enthusiastic camera skills we would not have much of the content inside this and previous editions; the Wanderer magazine would be a monochromatic place. So let me say a massive thank you to Jenny for providing such a thorough record of events through the medium of photography and giving me ample content to publish and show off the best of the Wanderers.

Thanks also to Philip Meadowcroft, our Events Coordinator, who can be relied up for penning accurate and amusing meeting reports in a style that is his alone. You’ll find an example of his work on page 12 detailing the fun times had by all at the Salcombe Laid Back weekend. I’m fairly sure some of the stories from this

year’s get together in the South-West will be recounted at the AGM too...

I’d also like to say a thank you to you all for not emailing me to point out all of the horrendous grammatical and spelling errors in the previous edition. To those who did, I hope you find an improvement. Although I cannot take the credit for it as Beccy, my wife and Minutes Secretary, has done most of the proof reading and corrections. So thank you to her from all the readers.

Finally if you’ve held or are planning an event, informal meeting or tried something new that you think our readers would be interested in then, by all means, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

John’s Jottings A message from the Chair of the Wanderer Class Owners’ Association UK John Renouf As another new year gets under way we can look forward to two key events that mark the start of the sailing season. The first is the RYA Dinghy Show and then second (more importantly) is the WCOA Annual General Meeting. It is convenient that the two run together at the same venue which makes for a worthwhile and enjoyable day out to get ourselves back in the “sailing” frame of mind.

The National Committee has already been busy preparing the programme of events for 2019 and also the necessary formalities for the AGM, to which this issue is dedicated, and you should find all of the information you need within its pages.

The AGM Agenda includes two resolutions – one is for the inclusion into the Class Rules a dispensation to allow boats fitted with twin-pole spinnaker systems to compete in Championship races. This is a very recent development to the Wanderer introduced by Hartley Boats, and the dispensation will allow boats thus fitted to sail competitively alongside existing boats, giving an opportunity for a comparative assessment.

The second resolution is for an amendment to the Constitution concerning tied championship results and how to determine an overall winner. This will bring the specific rule in-line with current practice. As always, these resolutions are subject

to a ballot of the members present at the AGM so I would encourage your attendance and support.

We are still looking for additional volunteers to help with the National Committee. A specific need is some up-to-date website skills to help with the modernisation and development of the Association’s website.

First-timers are always welcomed with a great deal of warmth and encouragement. In particular, I would draw your attention to WandererFest, our “flagship” event where the emphasis is on advice, encouragement and sailing in a noncompetitive environment in safe waters with support on-hand “just-incase”, and where a great time is had both on and off the water.

Expert advice is available from fellow members and established Wanderer experts, making this an ideal “first event” if you are new to sailing at Association events. Other events such as the “Try a Wanderer” at Marlow and the Salcombe “Laidback” weekend also offer similar opportunities for sailing in company if you don’t fancy joining the racing fleet, but even the racing events cater for all levels of ability, especially if you are like me and consider that taking part (or even finishing) is more important than winning.

The 2019 event programme follows a similar format to last year, and again the Association will cover the participation costs for all participating members, so I encourage you to get your boat trailer out of hibernation and take your Wanderer to some of the events. If you’ve been

Try-A-Wanderer Sunday 12th May 2019 A relaxing day on the Thames with a picnic, cruise and maybe a casual race.

The incomparable Thames riverside setting of Marlow SC – the home club of John and Jenny Renouf, the Association’s Chairman and Membership Secretary, will again be hosting this event enabling prospective owners of a Wanderer to sail in visiting members’ boats in between laying out their picnics on the lawns.

This is a remarkably relaxed day out and an opportunity for existing Wanderers to get out onto the water and cruise a short stretch of the river Thames.

The club is beautifully located on the Berkshire bank of the Thames just above Bisham Abbey, a couple of minutes from the A404(M) which connects the M40 and the M4 and just five minutes from junction 4 of the M40.

All are welcome to attend from 10.00am onwards.

Acceptance of Minutes of Previous AGM The minutes of the Annual General Meeting dated 4th March 2017 were agreed and signed as a true record.

4.

Matters Arising There were no matters arising.

5.

Chairman’s Report John mentioned that it was a year since he had taken on the role of Chairman and during that time there had been a programme of events that had met with varying degrees of success. He particularly wanted to express his appreciation to the organisers of events within the Association or representing the host clubs. This amount of co-operation not only relieved the committee of a significant amount of workload but, in so doing, created events that are welcoming and well provided for in every detail. WandererFest was a success and a special thank you was conveyed to Robin and his helpers.

During 2017 the Association supported events by way of meeting the fee for those participating. John mentioned that, given the Association had sufficient spare funds, it would continue this practice which would partly offset the cost of travel and accommodation.

Rick Lewis was this year welcomed onto the committee. The committee is very much a team that works well together with commitment, enthusiasm and good humour. John thanked them for making his role much more enjoyable. New volunteers were always welcome and to ensure the longevity of the Association ‘new blood’ is needed particularly in the field of desktop publishing to assist with the production of the magazine.

John mentioned a great deal of time had been spent on reviewing the Class Rules to determine what changes were required to accommodate the new Hartley foam sandwich constructed Wanderer. It has been a challenge to revise the Rules so that the new boats can be considered in class without giving them a clear advantage over the existing design. To some extent this has been a ‘leap of faith’ as we have not yet experienced the new boat racing alongside older boats so time will tell if we have got it right or if further tweaks to the Rules will be necessary.

John thanked everyone for attending the AGM, for the support in turning up at events and making them a success. This gives the Association the reassurance that we are doing things roughly right.

Treasurer’s Report In Robin’s absence it was stated that the accounts were published in the magazine. Membership numbers have increased.

The subscription level will remain the same owing to the healthy accounts.

7.

Membership Secretary’s Report Jenny reported there were 172 members of the Association as of the 31st December 2017. However, it was reported that 37 did not renew. 11 new Wanderers were sold by Hartley’s in 2017, the latest boat number being 1784. 17 new members were recorded in 2017. 97 members have renewed to date for the year 2018 and there are 3 new members since the New Year.

Technical Secretary’s Report Mike Bennett stated that his report would be included under item 11 of the agenda as there were no other technical matters to report.

9.

Events Report Philip reported there had been a restricted number of events during 2017 as a result of the smaller number of participants.

The annual joint event with Wayfarers had taken place at West Oxfordshire SC, the National Championships at the Langstone Harbour Regatta Weekend and the Inland Championships at Bewl. The annual Whitstable YC weekend lost its first day of racing due to horrid weather but the second day’s cruise was converted to a passage race to a well-known pub in Faversham Creek. The non-racing events included Marlow and Salcombe and both proved to be popular locations.

Both these venues will also be included in the 2018 calendar. The usual regulars attended the West Country cruise at Falmouth and this venue will be repeated this year.

Election of Committee Members All existing committee members were re-elected.

11.

Resolutions Mike Bennett reported that, as a result of the latest changes to the Wanderer introduced by Hartley’s, the committee had discussed the revising of the Class Rules. The proposed changes to the Class Rules were detailed in the magazine and approval was being sought from the members to adopt the changes.

A number of questions were raised including the use of the asymmetric spinnaker.

Mike replied that it will not be allowed for racing.

It was mentioned that Gavin Barr had made a huge contribution to the proposed new Rules in pointing the Association in the right direction. A vote was taken and the amendments to the Class Rules were unanimously accepted.

12.

Presentations 12.1. The Anglo Marine Racing Plate was awarded to Paul Yeadon.

12.2. After much deliberation, as there were many participants for this coveted trophy, the Barry Hillier Clanger Bell was awarded to Lesley Bennett for driving her car through the boules final match resulting in Philip Meadowcroft losing the game.

12.3. In the absence of David and Jill, their son Jamie presented the Ian Proctor Memorial Trophy. Jamie mentioned the 100 years of his grandfather’s design was show cased at the exhibition and was a fitting tribute to his memory. The decision this year was to award this prestigious trophy to John, the chair of our Group who has done an amazing job. John has undertaken a tremendous amount of work in liaising with Hartley’s over the changes introduced to the boat design. John replied that it was a team effort and the committee contributed a great deal to the success.

Any Other Business There being no further business the meeting closed at 2:30pm.

Inland Championships - Notice of Race WEST OXFORDSHIRE SAILING CLUB

Wanderer Inland Championships

27th and 28th April 2019 1.

VENUE The event will be held at the West Oxfordshire Sailing Club (WOSC), Witney, near OX29 5AG, Tel: 01865 321202, email: membership@wosc.org.uk. The organising authority is the West Oxfordshire Sailing Club in conjunction with the Wanderer Class Owners Association (WCOA).

2.

RULES The regatta will be governed by The Racing Rules of Sailing 2017-2020, the Prescriptions of the RYA, the WCOA Class Rules, and WOSC’s Sailing Instructions.

Racing Rules 27.1 and 40 will be changed to the effect that buoyancy aids are required. The changes will appear in full in the Sailing Instructions. Competitors should note that WOSC implements the RYA Racing Charter. Competitors will be required to undertake to sail in compliance with the Charter, which can be found at the front of the RYA rule book and at the point of event entry.

3.

ELIGIBILITY and ENTRY The regatta is open to all members of the WCOA. Crews may enter by completing the entry form from 09h30 on the morning of the event. An entry fee of £30 per boat will be payable on the day by WCOA on behalf of all participating members.

4.

SCHEDULE A competitors’ briefing will be held in front of the club balcony at 11h00. The regatta will be five races of approximately 60 minutes duration, with four to count.

Start times will be approximately as follows: • 1st Race Sat 12h00, 2nd Race Sat 14h30, 3rd Race Sat 16h00 • 4th Race Sun 11h00, 5th Race Sun 13h00h The scheduled time of the warning signal for the first race is 11h55. If more than 20 (twenty) entries are received then flights may be organised. In this case, the regatta will be five races of approximately 50 minutes duration, with four to count. The second flight start times will be five minutes after those of the first flight for each fleet.

If the number of races is curtailed (e.g. due to the weather) then one completed race will constitute a series, no discard if there are two races, and one discard for three, four, or five races.

5.

SAILING INSTRUCTIONS The Sailing Instructions are available on the club website: www.wosc.org.uk. Additional copies will be made available at the time of entry.

6.

PRIZES There will be prizes awarded for 1st -3rd places. Other spot prizes may be awarded depending on the size of the entry. The overall winner will be awarded the Dolphin Cup.

7.

RISK STATEMENT Rule 4 of the Racing Rules of Sailing states: “The responsibility for a boat’s decision to participate in a race or to continue racing is her’s alone.” Sailing is by its nature an unpredictable sport and therefore involves an

By taking part in any of the events covered by this notice of race, each competitor agrees and acknowledges that: • They are aware of the inherent element of risk involved in the sport and accept responsibility for the exposure of themselves, their crew and their boat to such risk whilst taking part in the event; • They are responsible for the safety of themselves, their crew, their boat and their other property whether afloat or ashore; • They accept responsibility for any injury, damage or loss to the extent caused by their own actions or omissions; • Their boat is in good order, equipped to sail in the event and they are fit to participate; • The provision of a race management team, patrol boats, umpires and other officials and volunteers by the organiser does not relieve them of their own responsibilities; • The provision of patrol boat cover is limited to such assistance, particularly in extreme weather conditions, as can be practically provided in the circumstances.

8.

INSURANCE Each participating boat shall be insured with valid third-party liability insurance with a minimum cover of at least £2,000,000 or the equivalent.

9.

FURTHER INFORMATION Hot food will be available at breakfast and during the lunch break on both race days and dinner will be available on the Saturday evening at extra cost at the club or an off-site venue. The club hopes to have a live band on the Saturday night, details to follow.

Amendment to the WCOA Constitution:

Amendment to the Wanderer Class Rules:

Rule 12 Championship Racing

Section C: Conditions for Racing. Rule 9: Rig. Part 5: Spinnaker Pole and Whisker Pole.

12.2(e) currently states: The championship winner shall be the helmsman with the best score for the series. Helmsmen with the same score shall be declared to have tied.

It is proposed to amend 12.2(e) to read: The championship winner shall be the helm and crew with the best score for the series after discard(s). If a tie is not broken after discard(s), then the helm and crew with the greatest number of wins in the series will be the championship winner. If a tie still remains unbroken then the helm and crew achieving the highest place in the last race of the series will break the tie and be the championship winner.

Explanation: The proposal reflects exactly what WCOA (and the vast majority of other classes) have done in respect of tie-breaks in both Championship and non-Championship races for at least the past twenty years and specifically in the 2017 National Championships. The opportunity is also taken to eschew the gendered terms; Helmsman or Helmsmen, to be replaced by helm and crew.

The current rule states: C.9.5 Spinnaker Pole and whisker pole USE (1) The spinnaker and whisker poles may not be launched by mechanical means.

(2) Both a spinnaker pole and whisker pole may be carried and used, but not simultaneously.

It is proposed to append c.9.5 with: A temporary dispensation is given for the use of twin mechanically launched spinnaker poles.

Explanation: Such equipment is for sale by Hartley Boats for use with the class. This temporary dispensation is proposed to allow the equipment during racing so the use of such can be compared to the current arrangement in competition.

VENUE and ORGANISING AUTHORITY The event will be at Whitstable Yacht Club, 3-4 Sea Wall, Whitstable, Kent, CT5 1BX, Tel: 01227 272942, email office@wyc.org.uk. The organising authority is Whitstable Yacht Club (WYC) in conjunction with the Wanderer Class Owners Association (WCOA).

2.

RULES and ELIGIBILITY Racing will be governed by the 2017-2020 Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS); the prescriptions of the RYA, the Wanderer Class Owners’ Association rules, and the WYC Sailing Instructions for the event. The WYC Sailing Instructions can be found on the WYC website, www.wyc.org.uk.

The following amendments shall be made to the WYC Sailing Instructions for the purpose of this event: 2.2. The Wanderer entry fee will be £15 per boat.

8.2. Wanderer class - Flag W. 17.1. Varied by Notice of Race para 4.

Participants should also note rule 13.1: Starting Intervals of 3 minute intervals shall be used.

3.

PROGRAMME Saturday 15th June H.W. is at 11:58am. 3 races are scheduled, back to back.

The event will take place alongside WYC club racing.

09:30am Registration opens. All participants shall register with the WYC. 10:30am Briefing 11:54am The warning signal for the first race on Saturday will not be before this time.

4.

SCORING SYSTEM One race shall be completed to constitute a series. The “Low Points” Scoring system of Appendix A of the RRS will apply. The worst score will be discarded when 3 races have been completed in the series.

5.

ADVERTISING: The racing event is designated RRS Category A.

6.

ENTRY and REGISTRATION Entry may be made on application to Whitstable Yacht Club, 3-4 Sea Wall, Whitstable, Kent, CT5 1BX, Tel: 01227 272942, or competitors may enter upon registration. The entry fee of £15 per boat is payable to Whitstable Yacht Club but the WCOA will pay for its participating members. Please see the Entry Form for methods of payment. Entry forms may be obtained from Whitstable Y.C. or may be downloaded from the Wanderer class website, www.wanderer.org.uk. As well as registering (see above) for safety reasons entrants shall also complete the Declaration (signing on) sheet by the course board before going afloat, and shall sign in on coming ashore.

7.

COURSES Courses will be set in Whitstable Bay. Competitors should allow sufficient time to sail out to the start.

ACCOMMODATION and SOCIAL Some bunkroom accommodation is available at the club, cost £25 per person per night. Book through the club at office@wyc.org.uk, phone: 01227 272942. There will be an (informal) evening meal and social on Saturday evening.

9.

PRIZES Race prizes will be awarded according to the number of entries, at the discretion of the Race Committee.

There will be a prize for the lowest placed boat to complete all races sailed in the series.

CRUISE, SUNDAY 16th June A cruise is planned on Sunday 16th June. Destination: Shipwright’s Arms, Faversham Creek. An escort vessel will accompany the cruise. H.W. is at 12:46pm. Briefing 09:30am, Launch 10:00am, Return by 3:30pm.

11.

RISK STATEMENT: Sailing is by its nature an unpredictable sport and therefore inherently involves an element of risk. Salcombe Laid Back Weekend A relaxed weekend of typical Wanderer “sailing with friends” Synopsis of Events by Philip Meadowcro� There was a jolly gathering of Wanderers to the Salcombe Laid Back Weekend which was re-instated in 2017 to have a relaxed weekend of typical Wanderer “sailing with friends”.

Two crews arriving from the southern fringes of the Lake District could be forgiven for not being keen on traipsing down the M6 and M5 just for the weekend. So Peter Mellings, from Killington Sailing Association near Morecambe, and attending his first Wanderer event, joined me as crew in Presto W1024 and his wife Irene joined my wife Jill in our minirib keeping an eye on the fleet.

Lady J – though the gentle and sunny conditions throughout the weekend only provided one piece of excitement for them after the end of the Saturday afternoon race when the wind died altogether (or my stamina just failed me).

We went afloat around 10.30am after a briefing at the top of the slip at Batson. The plan was to visit the three main creeks: Frogmore, Kingsbridge, and South Pool and in that order.

clear water we moved along smoothly. High tide had passed at 10:00am meaning that we could not sail up to the furthest points in these creeks and the fleet ambled back for a picnic lunch on Fisherman’s Beach just upstream of the Portlemouth ferry landing stage on the east side of the estuary.

With relaxation breaking out like a lively virus it became time to sail up to the Salcombe YC start line for the last start of the afternoon’s club racing.

Given the light breeze was coming from the north the fleet set off into the harbour to the Crossways mark then trundled back to the leeward mark opposite Mill Bay. Two laps were to be sailed. Peter and I built a reasonable lead by the end of the first lap but, inadvertently (or some might realistically say incompetently), I managed to get myself into a foul ebb tide as we made what I had planned as

Phil Rendel and Dickon Buckland and the Bennetts took their opportunity and we rounded (my cockiness firmly skewered) in third place, with Paul, Alasdair and Irene for company.

Phil and Dickon found good speed on the final leeward run to Mill Bay, rounded it smartly, and came home smart and worthy winners against the tide.

Meanwhile we caught up with Bennetts on the run to Mill Bay and rounded in close order.

Mike and Lesley chose the Salcombe side of the estuary to find sanctuary against the ebbing tide and we chose the Portlemouth side. Both helms and crews went heroically berserk with

short-tacking to avoid going too far into the tide in the centre of the stream.

At the line it took some careful watching from the race box to separate the two boats and we eventually learned that Peter and I came ahead of the hard-working Bennetts by the thinnest whisker imaginable.

Scrubbed up, we were joined by Jill and David Davies to tuck into slow-cooked lamb with loads of interestingly cooked vegetables or an (especially tasty) spinach, butternut, feta and pistachio pastry followed by baked figs with balsamic and ricotta or plum and almond tart with custard.

The Wanderer Edition 120, Spring 2019 its way from the shore in the direction of Guernsey. Dashing down to the beach, a kind family arriving in their rib agreed to take John and myself to this latest recreation of the Marie Celeste which was threatening to block busy shipping lanes. But not before we heard on John’s VHF radio a call from a passing cruiser notifying the Harbour office to send out a launch to investigate a drifting empty dinghy with its sails down.

John immediately notified the Harbour office that they could stand down a launch as we were now on the scene and bringing the offending craft into North Sands and reuniting it with its crew. I will not embarrass by naming the helm who had failed to secure his extended anchor warp.

On Sunday morning, a fragile fleet, having camped/motorhomed at Alston Farm or B&B’d in the town, gathered again at Batson for a sail in glorious warm sunshine and fair south-westerly breezes to North Sands for lunch at The Winking Prawn – an irresistible beach side daytime caff but a smart restaurant at night.

immediately above the infamous and potentially dangerous Salcombe Bar was perfectly possible as the fleet approached North Sands and its sandy, flat beach.

Most Wanderers sensibly beached on the sand but there always has to be one who thinks it’s smart to anchor on a longline offshore and then wade through the ebbing tide to the beach. Whilst we were knocking back the likes of baguettes stuffed with prawns and crab sprinkled with paprika mayonnaise in the sunshine on the patio at the Winking Prawn, a shout went up that a crewless Wanderer was making

We finished our interrupted lunch and in typical Wanderer style we all helped each other to refloat our boats and gently saunter back to Batson on the last minutes of the ebb tide.

RYA SafeTRX The best thing you can download in 2019 App review by Simon Edsforth Being reasonably new to sailing I’m always on the lookout for good safety gear. Staying safe on the water is the highest priority for all sailors, just above having a great time. One of the biggest selling points for owners of a Wanderer is that it is easily sailed singlehanded, being light to handle and easy to launch and recover. Not to mention at a reasonable price.

So there I was mid July, full of confidence following WandererFest 2018, frustrated by the lack of willing crew during the sunny summer weekdays with glassy water and an easy breeze. I had no option but to head out solo. There’s something exhilirating about it, just you, the boat, the wind and the waves. But life isn’t always plain sailing, bits break, forecasts are just that – stuff can happen. Maybe it’s my nature but I was wondering, is there some-one who can watch over me?

I like to think I’m well prepared before any sail; I have my buoyancy aid, floating handheld and a sturdy pair of paddles but what I was looking for was some form of tracker. Perhaps a moving map? Or some means to navigate around, but mostly I wanted something which would send my In the App: Starting a New Trip

log my location and speed if I set my workout to “other”, and it would send my live location to Facebook for a fee.

That didn’t seem quite right… I wanted something more boaty.

I’ve tried the Imray Navigator App and iSailor. Excellent for navigation, tidal planning on long passages and charting progress, but with one hand on the tiller and one hand on the sheets (not to mention the other distractions) looking down to see exactly how many millimetres from the South Cardinal I am isn’t the most easy or useful thing to do. My search quickly threw up SafeTrx from the RYA so I downloaded it and was so impressed I wanted to share my experience using it.

Of course there are such things commercially available but they’re very expensive. Perhaps the answer was in my pocket...

The app’s primary purpose is to send real-time tracking data back to shore in case of an emergency. I found that it is much more useful. That being said, as a means for calling for help I think RYA SafeTRX is probably the most effective thing I’ve got on my boat, after all my handheld radio can’t tell your position, using a flare I’m more likely to set myself on fire, and EPIRBs are way too expensive.

inside and out tick list of all the items in you should check before casting off - now I have no excuse for heading out with my bailers open. Lastly you input the names and mobile numbers of your emergency contacts which you can easily select from your phone contacts.

Admittedly set up takes a bit of time to do properly. Adding checklists is nice to have. Once complete though the app is really easy to use and takes no time to start sailing.

The app has three modes of operation: Track Only, Sail Plan and Explorer. The latter allows the user to browse the map. The mapping detail isn’t great; some of the major marks and buoys are indicated on the map In the App: Sending a link to live tracking

in a seemingly random means of importance. What Explorer mode allows you to do is view area info: click anywhere and information about weather, port authorities, marinas and lifeboat stations are available at your fingertips.

Track Only means the app will simply record your location and save it as a trip.

Sail Plan is what we’re really after.

In Sail Plan mode, the app will prompt the user for some basic details of the trip, which vessel you are using, how many POB and when you’re planning to arrive at your destination (opposite page left). Then you have to select an approximate start, mid-point, and destination - don’t worry if you change direction, it doesn’t really matter.

Once the passage plan is input you then have to select which contacts you wish to notify (opposite page centre).

Next your checklist, specific to the vessel you’re using, appears (opposite page right). You’d be remiss not to

check all of the items off before casting off. As previously mentioned this is completely customisable, but the initial templates based on the vessel type should cover most bases.

Then you should be ready to set sail. A text message is composed for you (bottom left) and your selected contacts included as addressees. I find it’s normally best to let them know it’s coming before you send it out and there are handy instructions in the menu you can forward. If your recipients click the link they’ll see your last recorded position, course and speed, as well as your intended destination.

In Sail Plan mode the app will log this information every 5 minutes. This can be a bit confusing initially when you’re beating up to wind because in 5 minutes you may have tacked a number of times so the course and speed over the ground don’t seem to match the heading of the boat. The app does this to conserve battery which is good, but the total distance travelled and the average speed may be a bit short.

Once on shore you end the trip and the app stops tracking, simultaneously letting your contacts know you’re back safe. Well there’s another job off the list - magic.

Does it work anywhere?

The RYA SafeTrx app does requires a cellular Internet connection to transmit location data in real time.

Has it ever been used in anger?

Where SafeTrx has been established in countries for longer, in particular South Africa and Norway it is becoming the alerting method of choice for small water craft users.

Within Norway last year, for example, over 50% of their emergency alerts were initiated by SafeTrx. There are

be a paid option, which might be coming in the future.

Are there any other improvements coming up?

We are looking into wearable technology, things like smart watches or a FitBit. The idea being is you won’t have to take your mobile phone out, instead you can wear a dongle on your wrist which can alert using the same system.

There’ll be a stand but I’m going to be out and about, I want to catch Mike MacNamara’s presentation about sail trim.

I noticed there is a Flotilla option, how does that work?

SafeTrx Flotilla is a feature to help improve the safety of sailing events. It is an option available in the Track Only mode. The participants enter the flotilla code and the organiser can see a real time location of all the boats in the event including the safety boat. If you’re running a dinghy race or a cruising event with Wanderers, for example, and somebody gets into trouble it will alert the organiser as well through their portal. It will ping the MCA but using this option will also send an alert to the organisers You’ve read the piece, the only thing I would say is the mapping detail is not very complete.

The app has the freely available information, ie 10m contours, separation zones, windfarms, major Trinity House buoyage, to give you spatial awareness. More detailed maps like contours and the marks maintained in the harbour areas would

WandererFest 2019 Thursday July 4th to Sunday 7th The Unmissable Event of the Year!

Four days of cruising and social activities, based at Cobnor, on the shores of beautiful Chichester Harbour.

WandererFest is located in a large sheltered field (with stunning sunsets) capable of supporting campervans, caravans or tents (though some of us prefer a decent mattress in a nearby hotel or B & B) on the private Cobnor Estate just by the hard at Cobnor Point where there is a prehistoric but reliable electric winch for recovery at low water. We also have our much praised “luxury loos” with flush toilets onsite.

We will be exploring Chichester Harbour with some short and some long cruises in company and with our own patrol boat. The real purpose of this gathering, apart from having a darned good time on and off the water, is to meet a wide raft of varying needs of Wanderer helms and crews from supporting new and inexperienced Wanderer owners wanting all sorts of tips and reassurance to those who want to sail independently or as a group - there is a morning briefing to plan the day and evenings devoted to eating and drinking the barrels of Youngs Best Bitter (open 24/7) at £2 per pint.

On the Saturday evening we have the infamous mega curry brought to the site from a bemused Indian restaurant on the main road which bypasses Bosham.

Programme of Events Each day will start with a briefing at 10:00am. On some days there will be two cruises - a longer and shorter one. A safety boat will accompany the cruises.

Training, Tuning & Rigging Tips There will be plenty of experienced Wanderer owners on hand to provide help and support with any aspect of rigging, tuning and boat handling that you wish to raise.

Cruising Cruising will take place over the four days, subject to the weather. Destinations: Dell Quay, Emsworth / Langstone, East Head, Prinstead / Thorney. Please bring appropriate picnic food to take with you each day.

Racing This year…an added feature. Bosham SC is conducting its Bosham Masters three day regatta on Friday through Sunday. We could join one of the handicap fleet in any of the two back to back races each afternoon. If five Wanderers enter, we would have our own class results.

RYA Membership Would you like to join the RYA for less?

If you want to join the RYA, you can get a reduced membership fee if you apply through the WCOA. We are a RYA “Joining Point” and we get money if you apply through us, which we will pass on to you. the not too distant future the RYA give us, the WCOA, a sum of money which we will reimburse to you.

The Whitstable event in June (Notice of Race on page 10) is going to be very special and will honour the immense contribution to WCOA and our own sailing skills freely given by our most venerable veteran himself - Gavin Barr.

This is an unmissable weekend.
