Signs that the pandemic is behind us appear o en these days.
For many at WCNY, one came in early December when seventh and eighth graders returned to Enterprise America. ey brought energy and excitement to the station’s scal literacy and civic readiness program, in which the students manage a city, run its businesses, and learn entrepreneurial skills. It was upli ing to see Enterprise America back in action!
is year, with support from the New York State Department of Education, WCNY and our New York State public broadcasting colleagues are undertaking major multi-platform projects designed to address educational needs for students, teachers, and families across the state. Public television and radio stations are creating comprehensive digital teaching tools, online learning, and essential instructional content. In addition to bringing Enterprise America back, WCNY is working with WPBS in Watertown to create a Skills Enrichment website where K-5 students will be able to con gure personalized lesson plans to help catch-up on learning loss.
Here in Central New York and across the state, stations will also collaborate to shine a light on social issues that impact all New York state residents. is work will include:
- Developing and distributing a Teen Mental Health and Suicide Prevention toolkit, including professional development for teachers on the front lines.
- Addressing social isolation among seniors by sharing stories in a project— Aging Together—geared to steer seniors to resources to help build community and resilience.
- Focusing on the Overdose Crisis in our state with in-person and virtual events to help New Yorkers defeat the opioid epidemic and other addictions.
By turning our cameras and attention to these topics, we will help educate the public on ways to face these issues and meet these challenges. It is your support that enables WCNY to work with our colleagues to confront these challenges. ank you for being part of the solution.

As you know, WCNY Classic FM spent the entire year of 2022 celebrating its 50th anniversary on the air, and we are proud to serve you every day as Central New York’s only classical music station. Now it’s January, 2023 and we are ready to celebrate another Golden Anniversary! On January 21, 1973, WCNY-FM premiered a new show produced and hosted by a young man by the name of William Brierley Knowlton. Fi y years later, the still young-at-heart Bill Knowlton continues to host his weekly Bluegrass Ramble, right here on the same station. Every Sunday night starting at 9:00, Bill presents three hours of this unique and classically American art form.
Bill is a ectionately known as “Mr. Bluegrass” throughout the Northeast. His knowledge of the music and connection to the artists (past and present) is second to none. Way back in 1960, he hosted the rst all-bluegrass radio show in New York City when he was a student at Fordham University. In 1997, he was named “Broadcast Personality of the Year” by the International Bluegrass Music Association. He received the Syracuse Press Club’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997 and was added to the Syracuse Area Music Awards (SAMMYs) Hall of Fame in 2006. He received a Service to the Arts Award in 1983 from the Cultural Resources Council. Bill emcees at least a dozen bluegrass festivals each year and hosts his own, the Bluegrass Ramble Picnic, every August in Little York, NY. at festival is the oldest in New York and New England. Last year it welcomed 17 bands, with nine hours of live performances. is summer will mark Bill’s 50th BGR Picnic. It’s sure to be a very special event, and one any fan of great music won’t want to miss!
Here at WCNY, we o en refer to Bill as “ e Colonel.” at’s not a reference to his Bluegrass chops, rather a tribute to his long military service. Bill is a proud U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam era, retiring from active duty in 1974 as a lieutenant colonel. Last April, he was thrilled to take part in Honor Flight Mission 16 and join a planeload of other local veterans to tour the military monuments in Washington, D.C. We are proud to call Bill Knowlton our colleague and friend, and we wish him all the best as he begins year 51 of Bluegrass Ramble on WCNY Classic FM!

On Friday, December 2, WCNY welcomed seventh and eighth grade students from Southern Cayuga to the Enterprise America City. The teachers spent several weeks instructing their students on the curriculum in school to prepare for the day of their visit. While lead teachers, Steve Baumes and Heather Snyder, have participated in the Enterprise America program before, they were excited to learn about the changes WCNY has made to the program.
The updates include making the curriculum available to teachers through Google Drive, making implementation of the individual lessons easier. Also, WCNY’s creation of pre-made Google Slides, which will enable teachers to facilitate the lessons without taking away from valuable prep periods.
Students from Southern Cayuga enjoyed utilizing tablets within their businesses to track their sales and make crucial revenue decisions based on the data collected. The HP Sprocket instant pictures at the Media Company (formerly the Broadcast Center) and the coding games at the Technology Shop, both new this year, were also a big hit among the approximately 100 students!
Thank you, Southern Cayuga, for all your hard work, and especially for being amazing Enterprise America Citizens!
WCNY is so pleased to welcome back students to our Enterprise America City!Associate Director of Education Kyla Merriman
