JUL 13 / 7:30 PM

SEP 7 / 7:30 PM AUG 7–16

FOR OUR MEMBERS ...

There’s something extraordinary about summertime in the Great Lakes state. For me, many of my fondest memories come from Michigan summers: cool evenings enjoying great performances on the hill at Pine Knob, the crack of a wooden bat at minor league baseball games, gazing out at the crystal clear waters of Lake Michigan from atop Pyramid Point, opening my tent to be greeted by the perfect pastel sunrise over the black rocks of Union Bay, or enjoying an ice cream cone and a leisurely evening stroll down the Ludington Pier while welcoming home the passengers aboard the S.S Badger. These are just a few of the many moments that make Michigan summers so special to me.

Whatever memories you make this summer, WCMU has an incredible lineup of programming to keep you entertained and informed along the way. July opens with a summer classic, the 43rd annual “A Capitol Fourth” concert, featuring an all-star lineup of performances and the greatest fireworks display in the nation. The program begins at 8 p.m. on Thursday, July 4th on WCMU Public Television. On Thursday, July 11th at 10 p.m., tune in for “Boys of ’36,” the thrilling story of the American Olympic rowing team that triumphed against all odds in Nazi Germany. Tennis fans won’t want to miss “Gods of Tennis,” a captivating docuseries that relives the epic rivalries and off-court battles of legends Björn Borg & John McEnroe (July 20th at 9 p.m.) and Billie Jean King & Arthur Ashe (July 23rd at 9 p.m.). And whether you’re waking up and sipping your campfire coffee while catching up on the day’s latest headlines with “Morning Edition,” or unwinding on the pontoon after a fun day in the sun with your favorite Americana tunes on “Homespun,” WCMU Public Radio is the perfect companion for all your summertime activities.

Whether you’re out and about exploring Michigan’s natural wonders or relaxing from the comfort of your own home, WCMU is here to educate, inform and entertain you all summer long. We wish you a joyful and rejuvenating summer filled with fun and lifelong memories, and as always, thank you for supporting public media in our communities.

IN MEMORIAM

Joseph Patrick Swallow, a cherished member of the Alpena, Michigan community, passed away on April 20th. Born on December 31, 1932, he brought joy to his parents, Mae and Roy. Joe, known affectionately as “JoePat,” was a proud fourth-generation Northeasterner, raised above the family store on North 2nd Avenue. He graduated from Alpena High School in 1950, and later earned a business degree in Accounting from Central Michigan University. At CMU, he was a beloved member of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity and the first graduating Army ROTC class. Joe served his country with distinction during the Korean War as a paratrooper and Infantry Officer. Rising to the rank of Captain, he was known for his bravery and leadership, earning numerous accolades. After his military service, Joe pursued a law degree at Detroit College of Law. He returned to Alpena after graduation, briefly practicing law before becoming the Alpena County Prosecuting Attorney in 1963

In 1965, Joe was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives for the 105th District. He served four consecutive terms, contributing to significant legislation such as Michigan’s Elliott Larsen Civil Rights Act. Known for his collegiality and dedication, Joe maintained bipartisan relationships that extended beyond his time in office. In 1972, Joe became a Circuit Judge for Michigan’s 26th Circuit, serving for an unparalleled 32 years. He worked tirelessly to improve the judicial system, helping to create the Public Defender’s Office and the Sunrise Center for substance abuse treatment. Admired by peers and the community, he was named one of Michigan’s Most Respected Judges by Lawyers Weekly.

Joe’s commitment to his community extended beyond the courtroom. He volunteered with numerous non-profits, including the creation of Luther Community Manor. His alma mater, CMU, honored him with a place in their ROTC Hall of Fame.

In retirement, Joe continued his service to Northeast Michigan, focusing on environmental causes and the preservation of Lake Huron. An avid outdoors-man, he found joy in boating, hiking, biking, and skiing. He was also a voracious reader, always eager to expand his knowledge.

Above all, Joe was a loving husband, father, and friend. His support for his family’s endeavors was unwavering, and his legacy of kindness, dedication, and service will be remembered by all who knew him. “JoePat” will be deeply missed, but his spirit and contributions will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Staff Spotlight: Mike Horace

What is one of your most memorable interviews?

Early in my career, while still a student, I was fortunate to interview former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright before a speech she delivered at Alma College. Prior to her address, we discussed pressing issues like the Iraq War, her upbringing in war-torn Europe, and her experiences as our first female Secretary of State. After her speech, she recognized me and playfully referred to me as “that handsome young reporter” while giving me a knowing wink – and I was smitten. It was clear to me why she was so effective as a diplomat; she perfectly understood the art of “charm and disarm.”

What is your goal when you come to work every day?

My goal every day is to have you, our listeners, learn something new. Listening to WCMU should be a learning experience: whether it’s getting caught up on the news, hearing new ideas that could transform our world, or even listening to a new piece of music for the first time.

If you could interview any historical figure, who would it be? I would love to speak with the three Apollo 8 astronauts: Jim Lovell, Frank Borman, and Bill Anders. In 1968, they became the first humans to orbit the moon. They truly were somewhere no man had gone before. It must have been exhilarating and terrifying all at the same time. I would love to hear their perspectives on that historic flight.

What are you reading right now?

I’m currently reading ‘The Paris Mystery’ by Kirsty Manning. It’s an excellent murder-mystery following journalist Charlie James as she tries to uncover the culprit behind a high-society murder in the lead up to World War II.
