June 11 • 7 a.m. Family Fun Run, State Street office All proceeds from this event will be given to the Cedar Valley United Way. There will be a 5K race for runners and walkers ages 13 and up. A 1-mile route will be available for children age 6-12 or adults who are walking. Children and strollers are encouraged for this event. The company also was involved in a major discovery during the war. In 1941, H.W. Florey came to America to enlist the aid of U.S. chemical manufacturers to develop methods of mass antibiotic production to prevent
infection during the war. Three of the biggest chemical industrial firms: Merck, Pfizer,and Squibbs combined their talents in this effort. The major result was the mass production of penicillin. With this new discovery, sick and injured troops had increased chance of survival. During production, Viking pumps were used to extract the necessary solvents.
