CEDAR FALLS — Viking Pumps are found on all seven continents and with more than 245 worldwide distributors, can be found in use in more than 200 countries. The company, founded in Cedar Falls, Iowa, is observing its 100th anniversary year. Headquarters are located in downtown Cedar Falls just blocks away from their Alloy Foundry. Viking’s Iron Foundry and Manufacturing facilities are located in the Industrial Park on Viking Road. Today, Viking Pump is a part of IDEX Corp., and has a global market and more than 550 employees worldwide, as well as manufacturing facilities in Ireland, Canada and China. The Viking Pump Museum at Jens Nielsen 406 State St., will celebrate its grand opening with tours from 5 to 7 p.m. on June 17. Visitors will travel through 100 years of company growth. Artifacts and hands-on displays will highlight the unique innovations that have made Viking Pump successful for 100 years. The Viking Pump story begins with Danish immigrant Jens Nielsen. Nielsen, the inventor of the Viking pump, arrived in America in 1870 and established a limestone quarry at the corner of 18th and Main streets in Cedar Falls. His quarry, however, had the recurring problem of water seepage from the nearby creek. Nielsen began creating wood carvings of the first rotary pump, hoping it might fix the problem. He took the carvings to George “Shorty” Mathes and asked him to construct the first-ever Viking pump. The first Viking pump completed in 1904, was built out of cast iron, weighed 900 pounds and could pump 900 gallons of water in one minute. Seven years later, in 1911, Nielsen and three other prominent town leaders — P.C. Petersen, a machinist,

needed supplies to the British. This led to the battle of El Alaamein and the retreat of Rommel from Africa. On the Intent’s 1200 horse-power diesel engine was a Viking fuel pump. The company also was involved in a major discovery during the war. In 1941, H.W. Florey came to America to enlist the aid of U.S. chemical manufacturers to develop methods of mass antibiotic production to prevent

infection during the war. Three of the biggest chemical industrial firms: Merck, Pfizer, and Squibbs combined their talents in this effort. The major result was the mass production of penicillin. With this new discovery, sick and injured troops had increased chance of survival. During production, Viking pumps were used to extract the necessary solvents.

Locusts were loaded into a tank-carrying glider called a Hamilcar. Hamilcars would land in an area of battle and unload the tanks to reinforce the Allied powers. A Viking pump was used on these tanks to take the oil from the differential and pump it through a special radiator and back through the differential for pressure lubrication. This feature made the medium tanks suitable for high speed and continuous service. A Viking pump also was aboard a tiny ship with a big history — the Intent. When biting into a Hershey’s candy bar, do you ever consider how it was made? A Viking pump most likely was used to blend the chocolate treat. Viking pumps carefully move the liquid chocolate through various stages of the mixing process while a heated element on the pump ensures that the mixture remains at the perfect temperature. Even french fries from your local fast food restaurant have been influenced by Viking pumps. Many chains use Viking brand pumps to circulate and filter the frying oil, which keeps the fries fresh and tasty, batch after batch. Aside from food, Viking’s flagship product, the internal gear pump, has made its mark pumping a variety of very difficult materials. One plastics manufacturer, INEOS, uses Viking pumps to blend its extremely rigid plastics. While you may not recognize the name INEOS, it is likely that you would recognize one of the refrigerators made from the plastic. With a few modifications, this

During the 1950s, Viking Pump expanded international distribution and in 1959, built a new 50,000-square-foot machine shop on Viking Road, paving the way for the Cedar Falls Industrial Park. During the 1970s, Viking had a focus on expansion and innovation, gained two new additions and introduced many new pump models to the market. In the 1980’s, Viking celebrated its 75th anniversary and opened a manufacturing facility in Shannon, Ireland. During the 1990s, Viking acquired both Johnson Pump UK and Viking Pump Canada, and appointed their first distributor in China.

Plastic manufacturer INEOS uses Viking pumps to blend rigid plastics, far left. At left, Viking pumps fuel and lubricate engines on Coast Guard cutters.

APPLICATIONS From page 5 The pump built for this job is manufactured to withstand substantial threats, including biochemical, electromagnetic pulse, nuclear, biological and chemical attacks. Another military application resides on the new fast-response ships being used by the United States Coast Guard. The 154-foot Sentinel class cutter ships patrol 95,000 nautical miles of U.S. coastline. Viking pumps are used to fuel and lubricate the ship’s engines. Even Viking’s accessories play a part in military defense. The U.S. Department of Defense relies on the AN/TPY-2 Transportable Radar Surveillance system to keep watch over men and women serving in the armed forces. Described as the world’s most advanced mobile radar system, it is able to search, acquire, track and discriminate threats from non-threats. A simple Viking accessory, called a strainer, ensures that no stray particles enter the radar’s critical cooling system.
